Reimu: "Everything is flowers with you, isn't it?"
Yuuka: "It could hardly be otherwise, dear! I am what I am."

Yuuka takes off her shoes, while Reimu places the parasol on the weapons rack by the door. The top shelf holds scrolls, boxes labelled "needles" and "seals", and one Mk 2 hand grenade.
A large sign by the rack says in printed text, "Check ALL weapons before coming in! Including but not limited to: Swords, Axes, Bows, Spears, Guns, Wands, Staffs, Parasols, Lasers, Bombs, Poisons, Curses," and so on.
A handwritten post-it note has been tacked to it, saying, "SEIJA -- Do NOT obey this!"
Another, ripped and faded sign has been taped by the list, adding, "MARISA -- Whatever it is now: NO. I mean it."
There is a bullethole next to the sign.
A different yin-yang cat watches Yuuka.
Reimu says, "So what kind of flower is Marisa?"

Yuuka: "It's a fast-growing, invasive species that can contribute to rat infestations and dangerous wildfires."

Somewhere, Marisa sneezes.

In Reimu's kitchen, the two together prepare afternoon tea, while two different cats beg at their feet. Reimu pours hot water from a large kettle into a cast-iron teapot. Yuuka takes down bowls and cups, and opens up the Japanese-style lunchboxes she brought.
Yuuka has put on an apron that parodies the "piyo piyo apron" worn by Kyoko in the manga "Maison Ikkoku", but instead of a drawing of a baby chick on the chest, it has a drawing of a Dragon Quest slime, saying "suu suu".
Reimu: "You aren't bothered she stole the Master Spark from you?"
Yuuka: "Oh, Marisa didn't steal it from me! She bargained for it fairly."
Reimu stops what she's doing to turn toward Yuuka. "Bullshit."
Yuuka: "It's true! I was curious to learn a little magic, and in exchange for lessons I agreed to trade her a cutting."
Reimu: "Huh!"
Yuuka: "I don't mind helping another gardener to improve their art. She makes it bloom well, doesn't she?"

Yuuka carries a tray of sandwiches and snacks out of the kitchen.
Yuuka: "Besides... to cast it ONCE, she needs a device."
A surprise second Yuuka, with long hair, and wearing trousers instead of a skirt, whisks the teapot and cups from Reimu's hands, leaving Reimu with nothing to do.
Yuuka, the second: "But I by myself can cast it TWICE."

Only one Yuuka again. Yuuka and Reimu kneel on the veranda to take their tea. One yin-yang cat nearby sprawls asleep in the sun, an orange tabby circles curiously, and a third cat sulks by Reimu.
Reimu: "Okay, then how about... Alice?"
Yuuka: "Ohhh... Alice is special. With her pride and ingenuity, she bears the seed of great potential for power."

Yuuka beams with enthusiasm. She says, "Why, if one could but prune away a few of her mortal failings -- such as 'restraint' or 'mercy' -- she could make a truly MARVELLOUS youkai!"
We can now observe that Yuuka's necktie is not knotted, but instead held by a silver woggle marked with a "lily of the valley" emblem.

Yuuka blushes happily. "She might even be stronger than I. Wouldn't that be an interesting day?" A heart floats in her words.
Reimu tries to hide her concern. She thinks, "Ganbatte, Alice-san..." But only says out loud, "...er, uh... and Yukari?"

Yuuka grins wolfishly. "Yukari and I have an arrangement: She doesn't meddle in my garden, and I don't BURN DOWN hers."
Reimu: "Isn't it weird that a youkai of FLOWERS is so good at fighting?"
Yuuka: "I'm surprised to hear that from a Japanese!"
Reimu: "You say that like you're not."

Yuuka: "I am known in many lands, by many names, wherever flowers grow."
Yuuka narrates the scene from the foreground, wearing a woman's kimono and lacquered okobo sandals. She carries now a Japanese-style paper parasol. Her hair is tied up in a bun with a cherry-blossom kanzashi, and she wears a sunflower hair ornament. She is surrounded by flowers: chrysanthemum, hollyhock, and birthwort, and above her spreads blooming sakura.
Yuuka: "Did not your own samurai describe themselves as cherry blossoms, and fight for emperor and shogun under the banners of the chrysanthemum and hollyhock?"
In the midground, two armored samurai clash. The lower-status one has fallen to the ground; the richer has a bloody slash across his left eye. He swings his sword and chops the grounded man's spear in two, but the other is undaunted.
In the background, an army of horse and foot mounts the top of the hill, banners billowing.

Now Yuuka narrates wearing a huipil dress with embroidered shawl, and simple leather slippers. Her hair is done in buns, with a Mexican sunflower by her ear. A hummingbird flies near her. Growing around her are Aztec marigold, dahlias, banana yucca, and Mexican hat flowers.
Yuuka: "Across the sea to your east, the mighty Mexica gathered their 'hummingbird' soldiers to send to the 'Flower Wars' (they named them) to gather honor, blood, and sacrifices."
In the midground, the fighters are now two Nahuatl, one poor, one rich with a slashed left eye. The poorer one wears only a loincloth, and has a shield slung over his shoulder. His shield is painted with a hummingbird design, and from it hang a few feathers. The richer soldier wears a full-body jaguar costume, and wields a macuahuitl war-club. The poor soldier leaps to his feet and tackles his enemy, disarming him.
In the background, an army of Aztecs battle below a stepped pyramid and high mountains.

Now Yuuka narrates wearing men's doublet and hose, embroidered with fleur-de-lis and tulips, along with knee-high riding boots and gauntlets. Around her neck is a sunflower pendant. On her shoulder perches a falcon. About her feet, and entangling the narration boxes, are red, white, and yellow roses.
Yuuka: "And to the far west, the lords of the English struggled for a choice of kingly roses, red Lancaster or snowy York."
In the midground, the fighters are now two Englishmen, again one poorer, the other richer with the eye injury. The poorer soldier has some mail pieces and a simple brimmed helmet; the richer has plate armor, a full helm, and a shield. The rich fighter is overthrown, his foe about to stab him through the visor with his own arming sword.
In the background, mounted knights charge a line of archers behind wooden stakes. A church or fort stands on hills in the far distance.
Yuuka: "Flowers and War have always been intertwined."

We return to Reimu's veranda and cherry trees.
Reimu: "You've seen so many strange places... Do you have a favorite?"
Yuuka: "...it was in the west, in Flanders, perhaps a hundred years ago."

Yuuka invisibly narrates: "Such a war, Reimu! The men burrowed like moles, or took to the air like kites."
Above barbed wire, two airplanes spit tracers at each other. It is World War One.

Shirtless German artillerymen fire their gun amid sandbags. Something explodes close by.

Yuuka, wearing colorful hat, coat, and umbrella, stands on a windy no-man's land, surrounded by dull mud and broken pieces. Tracer fire crosses the sky, coming from a distant machine-gun nest. She notices, but does not bother to avoid, the few bullets that land near her.
Yuuka, narrating: "But it was I who did not understand your passion. When I learned your true intentions, I was deeply humbled."

Yuuka, narrating: "Did you know, Reimu? You can find graves in the wild by how the flowers grow. (Bone meal makes such good fertilizer.)"
The corpse of a soldier lies upon the ruined earth. But near his outstretched arm, a single bluebell, and a few patches of grass, have sprouted.

Now there are no bodies, but grass and wildflowers and bumblebees cover the ground. A shattered helmet has a flower growing through the holes.
Yuuka, narrating: "I tell you that after this great war, those fields FLUORISHED with color. Rainbows spilled on seas of green grass!"

Yuuka, narrating: "And ever after, all through those lands, the people wore blood-red poppies, to remember and give thanks to their kindred who slept below, for this sight they had worked so hard to create."
Yuuka wears early-20th century men's hunting clothes: a sturdy jacket and breeches with knee-high boots and gloves. Her curled hair is in a loose pompadour. As ever, she has a parasol. The sun shines warmly. The hill Yuuka walks down is covered in grass and bright red poppy flowers, stretching on forever. The plants almost completely cover a few remaining pieces of military hardware: a broken machine-gun, a lost helmet, a twist of barbed wire. Yuuka smiles.
Yuuka, narrating: "Tens of thousands of men willingly buried themselves for nothing better than the GLORY of FLOWERS!"

We return to Reimu's veranda. Yuuka clutches a handkerchief, almost overcome with romantic tears.
Yuuka: "It was the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen!"
Reimu stares at her and says nothing.

Yuuka says, "Excuse me!", wipes her tears, and takes out her compact to redo her makeup.
Reimu thinks, "Yuuka is one of my oldest friends, but she really is a monster, isn't she? I don't even know how to BEGIN to explain the truth to her... or if I even should."

Many cut flowers are arranged on a wooden surface, with identifying captions. "Yes!" your voice went up an octave and you wanted to die. You cleared your throat and ask, "What can I do for you?"
"I'm just here to remind you to submit those reports by the end of your shift."
"Of course."
"And, please button up your shirt." You stared down and a flush spread across your cheeks again. You wanted Nanami to keep staring but you knew better than to try and get his attention. He probably likes skinnier women. You sighed, swiveling your chair back to your computer and resumed clacking away at the reports at hand.
Friday came and the anticipation for the company party was evident; questions of what each person was wearing and what time they were going to be at the venue was thrown everywhere. You were thankful that the company decided to make the day in the office as a half day and the rest of the shift will be covered by the party, leaving you plenty of time to get ready. You made it home within 15 minutes, quickly hopped the shower, and shaved. You opted for light makeup, your black dress hugging your curves stopping right above your knees. You paired your look with strappy, chunky heels, your hair in a high ponytail. You got to the venue and could feel the excitement in the air. The company had reserved a banquet hall where the chandeliers were dripping, the rows of tables nestled against each other. "Y/N!" your favorite coworker and friend Misty screamed.
"Misty!"
"Umm ooookaaayyy go off then queen!"
"Ohmygosh Misty stop."
"I'm serious you look stunning."
"Thank you Misty. So do you."
"This dress is making your boobs look even more scrumptious." Misty mischievously noted.
"Misty," you hissed. "Are you drunk already?"
"I may or may not be the world will never know." You laughed and couldn't help but be grateful for this unhinged friend of yours. You both stood in line for food talking amongst yourselves and with everyone around you both. You could feel a pair of eyes on you and when you looked up, you saw Nanami across the room surrounded by the other higher ups with a glass of champagne in his hand. He lifted his glass towards you in acknowledgment and you shyly smiled, your head bending down a little. "Oouu Y/N, is it me or is Mr. Kento checking you out."
"Stop it Misty. You know he likes skinnier women."
"Who the fuck told you that lie?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"I'm usually never wrong about these things but I have a feeling Mr. Kento likes his women..." Misty stopped and slowly looked you up and down continuing with, "thick." making sure to enunciate and prolong the word. You paused in your tracks. Does he like big women? Before you could ponder on the thought a moment longer you felt a hand around your waist pulling you closer. You looked up to see Mahito. "Mahito. Hi." Mahito leaned down and whispered, "You look beautiful tonight. I told you I wanted to see you dressed up." You offered an uncomfortable laugh trying to free yourself from his grasp. "Don't think I'll let you go that easily Y/N."
"I'll catch up with you later Mahito."
"It's a date then!" you quickly grabbed Misty's arm and pulled her to the first available table you saw. "There's something off about that guy."
"I know," Misty agreed. "Let's try to steer clear of him."
The party was set in motion after everyone settled down with their plates of food: the CEO gave a warm welcome along with the speech of the company; another higher up stepped forward gushing over the results that were produced this year and the goals for the following year. Nanami's supervisor came forward to commend a fantastic job well done to Nanami and his leadership, your guys' team being the top team in research, development, and sales. Finally the board of directors came forward with the final say. "Without further ado, let's all raise our glasses for a job well done for this year and the big plans we have for next year!" The room erupted into whoops and applause, the servers going around instantly refilling everyone's glass. You reveled in the sweet bubbly liquid that smoothly went down your throat. I could get used to this: champagne and bubbles.
You lost track of how many times your glass was refilled, the remaining constant factor was you being happy, bubbly. You somehow managed to take decent photos with your coworkers, reminding yourself to eat and drink water in between each glass. Somehow you found yourself alone in a corner with Mahito, not realizing that he was motioning for the server to keep refilling your glass. "Mahito," you say. "I don't think I can drink any more."
"Eh? But I've been the only one drinking."
"Liar," you pouted. "I-I may be a wittle buzzed right now but I KNOW you not shlurp shlurp." Mahito laughed before his thumb came and swiped across your cheek. "Cute." oblivious to the fact that Nanami across the room was trying to focus on his breathing, his fists clenched so hard that his knuckles were turning white, his veins protruding more profoundly. Nanami wanted nothing more than to be by your side instead of surrounded by all these men talking about gawd knows what. His body froze when he saw Mahito lead you out the venue, one of your arms tossed over his shoulder, his arm around your waist trying to steady you. He looked around noticing that everyone was practically drunk. "'Scuse me," he excused himself from the conversation and found that his feet - or was it his heart? - was quickly leading him towards you.
"Ma-Mahito?"
"Shh, we're almost there love."
"Wh-where are we going?"
"My car." your head quickly shot up but that proved to be too much for you, the dizziness quickly coming over you. "W-wait Mahito, please, let me...let me rest." You could sense the impatience in Mahito's demeanor as he leaned you up against the nearest wall but you couldn't decipher it in your drunken state. "You're really trying it Y/N."
"Wh-what? What are you talking about Mahito?"
"I see the way you dress, teasing all the men, me especially."
"Mahito, you must be mistaken. I would never-" you froze when you felt his hand on your thigh, slowly making its way up. He leaned towards you in a quiet tone continued. "You think I didn't notice? Hm? The way you look at me?"
"Mahito, please stop." You didn't want to cause a scene so you tried to push him away gently, his hand stopping underneath your dress. Your disorientated state was not helping. You were pleading for someone, anyone, to come out.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk, ssshhh. I'm going to wipe that smug look off your face real soon."
"Mahito," you firmly commanded. "Stop! I'm serious!" His hand was inches away from your sex when you heard a low, "She told you to stop." You both looked to the left and relief flooded over your entire being at the sight of Nanami in his white suit, blue dress shirt. "Nanamiiiiiin," you smile, tears threatening to spill over. Nanami felt his dick twitch at the way you said his name. Now is not the time. He thought to himself. "Y/N," he held out his hand. "Come here." Without a second thought you rushed to his side crashing into him, enveloping him with a hug. With you still latched on, Nanami effortlessly unbuttoned his blazer and draped it over you. "Nanami, she's with me." Mahito grinned.
"She didn't even want to go with you-"
"Baka, baka, baaaaaaakaaaaaa bleeeeehhh." you tauntingly say to Mahito while sticking out your tongue. You swear you could see the vein in Mahito's forehead pop out but you didn't care; you were safe and warm. "Unfortunately Mr. Mahito, she has spoken. I will see you Monday. Have a good evening." Nanami escorted you out the venue towards his car. It wasn't until you both were on the freeway where the earlier events hit you: you began to shake, clutching at your chest suddenly finding it hard to breathe. Nanami swerved to the shoulder with his hazard lights on, turning up the heater. "Y/N, Y/N," he pleaded. "Y/N, look at me." You looked at him and could see how worried he was for you, one of his hands gently caressing your cheek, the other rubbing up and down your arm. "Focus on me. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth." You found yourself mimicking the way he was breathing, your shaking slowly subsiding, your ragged breathing coming down. "Thank you." you meekly managed to get out. Nanami engulfed you in a hug. "I apologize. I realize a man's touch is the last thing you want but I'm just glad you're safe." Before you could respond, he quickly scooted away and asked, "What's your address?"
"You're taking me home?"
"Of course."
"Why?" Nanami sighed, gripping the steering wheel. "Because I don't want you to be fearful of me after what you went through."
"I'm not! I won't!"
"Y/N please-" you crossed your arms over your chest like a child throwing a tantrum. He sighed, put the car in drive, and slowly made his way back onto the freeway. You wanted to tell him that it's not the alcohol, that despite what happened earlier, that you knew in your heart of hearts that Nanami would never hurt you. You wanted and needed this man. Mahito was a different story.
"Are you dropping me off because you're going back to Jessica?"
"What?!" Nanami's head snapped in your direction, furious of the implication.
"I mean don't you like her? All the men in the office find her attractive." He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. She's drunk, don't mind her. You took his silence as confirmation and scoffed. "Of course you do. That's why you ain't sayin' shit!"
"Y/N, this isn't the right time to talk about this."
"And what is this?"
"Your feelings of jealousy."
"Jealousy? Jealousy?! Of course I'm jealous! You like Jessica and I like you! Why...why can't you like me back?" His head swiveled so fast in your direction he thought he would suffer from whiplash. "Y-you like me?" He heard soft snoring and he groaned. He made his way to your side, opened your door, knelt on one knee, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. "Stupid." he chuckled and carried you inside his apartment.
The rays of light pierced your closed eyes causing you to wince and groan. You turned to your side and nuzzled closer to the source of warmth. "Mmm. Squishy," Squishy? Your eyes shot open to find yourself with a shirtless Nanami. You took the time to feast on the sight before you: his defined, smooth pecs, the happy trail inching lower, the veins protruding and evident in his biceps and forearms; his sharp nose and jawline, chiseled cheekbones, blonde hair plastered flat against his forehead. You silently giggled at being able to experience a vulnerable Nanami. "Are you done staring Miss L/N?
"Eek!" you quickly scooted away from him. "Sorry." you mumble. He lazily turns on his side and greets you with a very low toned good morning, that morning voice alone sending shivers down your spine. "Thank you for saving me last night."
"Of course."
"Are wee-"
"Yes, we are at my apartment."
"Whyy-"
"You refused to give me your address."
"Why-"
"Jessica." Your hand quickly clamped over your mouth. "Ohmygod Mr. Kento! Did I...did I ruin your rendezvous with Jessica??" He sighed sitting upright. "Y/N, where on earth did you get the idea that I liked Jessica?" It was a small difference but it had the biggest impact on you: how gently he said your first name. "Well most of the men in the office find her attractive; and plus I didn't see her go in the office after you told me about my outfit." His hand slid down his face as he stated, "You were busy talking with Mahito and yes your outfit was distracting." You quickly looked down, the tears threatening to spill over. "Yes, yes how can I forget. No one wants to see arm flabs."
"That's not what I meant Y/N."
"But you said my outfit was distracting. And to be fair it was really hot that day."
"It was distracting to me." You looked over to see him with a slight pink tint on his cheeks.
"To you? Why?"
"Since it appears we're being transparent with one another, it took everything in me not to fuck you on my desk. I wanted to take you right then and there but I couldn't. You don't realize it but the other men, they stare at you too, way more than they do to Jessica. I wanted to have you, make you mine so they could stop staring. Then I saw you and Mahito talking at your cubicle and it took everything in me not to punch him in the throat; and to think he had the audacity to pull that shit at the fucking company party!? I should've killed him right then and there, with my own bare hands." He was visibly shaking, his hands clutching the sheets. You hesitantly reached out and put your hand atop of his, he turned his hand over so that your fingers were linked. "What I'm trying to say Y/N is I like you too, I've liked you for a while now."
"Really?"
He turned so that he was fulling facing you, his left hand coming up to cup your face."Yes, really. If I may be so forward, may I...may I kiss you Y/N?" You smiled, answering with, "You may." He gently pressed his lips against yours, slowly nibbling and sucking on your bottom lip. You opened your mouth more allowing him access, his tongue swirling with yours. He pulled back panting. "Fuck."
"What's wrong?" you asked in a panic.
"If we keep this up I may lose my self control and you won't be able to see me as a gentleman." Your arms snaked around his neck pulling him closer. "I want you to lose control." you whispered. In response he growled and continued kissing you more passionately, the tent in his sweats pressing against your thigh.
Monday morning came and Misty shouted, "Y/N! Where the fuck have you been??"
"Huh? Why what's going on?"
"You didn't hear? Mahito got fired. He tried to make a move on two girls at the party."
"Two?!"
"Yup. They're saying for the sake of the victims they're going to keep their identities a secret but everyone knows that it's Jessicaaaaaaohmygod is that a hickey?!" You instinctively slapped your neck, your face growing a crimson red. "Y/N L/N, who were you fucking over the weekend?"
"Shh! Misty!"
"Miss Carlisle, please use your indoor voice."
"Sorry Mr. Kento."
"And please refrain from asking my girlfriend personal questions."
"Yes sir-girlfriend?" Misty looked at you as you sheepishly grinned. "You sly bitch! Whoop whoop!" you threw your head back in laughter as Nanami came, kissed you on the cheek in front of everyone with his hand wrapped tightly around your waist and said, "See you at lunch beautiful."

DAI Companion Styles: Sera
Dragon Age Companion Styles series
The fashion in the Dragon Age universe (in keeping with the overall aesthetics of the games) has undergone an interesting kind of evolution over the course of the three games, various side media, and fourteen real-world years this franchise has been around. And disjointed as some of it may be, it’s something that interests me, both in terms of its real-world influences and in terms of the in-universe implications for worldbuilding and characters. It’s an element for which I would love to see even more discussion and analysis, I thought it would be fun to dive into it by taking a look at the different base outfits companions wear in Inquisition, and talking about how they fit with the characters and the world they inhabit. I don't know how many of these I will end up doing, but I'd like to do some and I think it will be fun.
Disclaimer: I am not a fashion expert, dress historian, or professional designer! I'm just a gamer who likes to sew and has a casual interest in historical fashion, and a great interest in fantasy worldbuilding and the implications thereof, and that's where I'm coming from on these posts. I'd also love to hear thoughts from fans who have a more in-depth background in historical dress, textiles, etc. Also I'm going to be talking about clothing and not armor because I know a lot less about armor.

I’m going to start with Sera, of course, because it's me. ;)

So I've mentioned before that I really like the concept of Sera's outfit. The upper silhouette in particular seems directly drawn from the Fereldan commoner fashions of Dragon Age: Origins, the styles of Sera's youth in Denerim. For example, here's Kaitlyn in Origins, wearing some typical commoner clothing:

Note the plaid, the bare shoulders, the underarm straps (which have always looked incredibly uncomfortable to me)! We see several variations on this style in Origins, including leather vests and even some floral fabrics, but the off-the-shoulder look is nearly ubiquitous on commoner women:

Noble-born women in Origins seem to forego the cold shoulders, but we still see similar shapes in the upper silhouette, including those dang shoulder straps that go under the arms:

The commoner styles of Ferelden in 9:30 Dragon even reappear a decade later in Inquisition! Which doesn’t surprise me much, as trends move a lot more slowly for rural commoners than for wealthy aristocrats.

We even have the weird leather neckerchief thing, a staple of the early 9:30s in Ferelden (and convenient way to hide the neck seams on those character models)! Like the collars in Origins, Sera's does not tie at the back, and a close-up view of hers reveals side seams and presumably a closure of some sort.

So let’s talk about the breeches!

I'm going to call these "breeches" both because it's a word Sera uses and it's what I think they most closely resemble, especially given that they end below the knee but do not extend to the ankle. (Trousers or pants would be full-length.) First of all, it's notable that Sera is wearing breeches because it's a break with the Fereldan silhouettes we saw above, which are pretty universally long straight skirts hitting about mid-calf.
The waist of Sera's breeches is covered by her tunic, but I would guess that they might close with lacing (which can be seen on some of the Inquisitor’s Skyhold outfits) or a buttoned fall (a front panel with buttons on each side, which I think I've seen in some Orlesian noble concept art).

My guess is that Sera's breeches are newer than her tunic, because of the slim cut; they more closely resemble the Orlesian men's fashions of the present in Inquisition than the sort of looser trousers we see in Ferelden circa 9:31 Dragon. Going by the plaid alone I would have called them Fereldan, but based on the cut I have to call these breeches Orlesian, and possibly a more recent acquisition for Sera. While plaideweave does not appear to be currently on trend in Inquisition, Val Royeaux is a center of high fashion and constantly-changing trends among the upper classes and I don't have trouble believing that plaideweave might have been fashionable sometime in the years Sera has lived there.
A detail I love about these breeches is that they are cut on the bias! Synthetic elastic fabrics and machine-knits don't exist in the non-industrialized south of Thedas so far as we know, but woven fabrics have a bit of stretch and give when cut diagonally across the weave, and this would be appropriate for a pair of snug-fitting woven breeches, for someone of means. (They would have been expensive, because diagonally into a bolt of cloth means you need more fabric to start with.) We also see plenty of wrinkles and bunches in Sera's breeches, especially where her knees bend, demonstrating that this isn't a perfectly smooth, skintight fabric like a pair of synthetic leggings.
Notably, Sera's breeches have been patched—and patched skillfully, using the same fabric and with perfect pattern-matching. I think the patching had to have been done by a previous owner; Sera might have the skill (she does mention sewing in her journal), but she likely wouldn't have had access to a matching fabric or the patience or desire to pattern-match. This suggests to me that these breeches were owned by someone of lesser means; a noble would not wear visibly-patched clothing however skillfully done, but based on the bright colors I think this garment could have belonged to a noble at one point, before being cast aside. The servants we see in the Winter Palace wear neutral, muted colors in order to draw little attention, so I don't think this is part of a servant's uniform, but it could have been worn by a servant on their off time or by a member of their family. My guess is that these breeches were a once-fashionable garment, discarded by their high-class owner and taken by someone in their employ (maybe even their own tailor, who might still have access to scraps of the original fabric) to be repaired and reused by themselves or a friend or family member. I judge the large, visible stitching on both the patches and the side seams to have been added later, likely by Sera herself when the original stitching began to give out, further extending the life of this garment.
So, the breeches are great. We love the breeches.
I do have some issues with the tunic, but let's start with what's good about it.

I've already mentioned how it's consistent with Fereldan fashions a decade out of date. Based on the style and the fabric, I would say this garment was originally owned by someone in Ferelden of decent but not extravagant means, and Sera either stole it outright or swiped it from a rubbish heap. The wear on the tunic is consistent with its age: it's much more visibly tattered and falling apart than the breeches. However its construction also appears high-quality to me. If we look at the large tatters, we aren't seeing Sera's skin through them, and at the cuff where Sera has rolled up one sleeve we see the same contrasting fabric as the shoulder straps and trim. This tunic has a lining, and this also explains how it's still holding together on Sera's body with so much damage to its outer layer. The asymmetry at the bottom is jagged in a way that suggests part of it was torn off, rather than the garment being intentionally constructed that way.
My big problem with the tunic is its tightness and drape. This is a woven fabric (Highever Weave), and we can see the directionality of the weave very clearly because of the tatters; this garment was not cut on the bias. Even with the spiral-laced closure (love that they used spiral lacing instead of cross-lacing, by the way, just because it's a form of historical lacing that's often overlooked in media), this garment simply would not hang on Sera's figure the way it does in the game. (To be fair, neither would some of the Origins tunics. I have no idea what those are doing.) The form-fitting cut overall just doesn't make sense for a woven fabric, and it doesn't drape like one either—something that I'm sure has frustrated many a cosplayer trying to make this tunic with a comparable material. Without some stretch in the fabric, it's not happening. Even a moderately looser cut would make a lot more sense—compare with how Varric's tunic of the same weave hangs on him. Bottom line, Sera's tunic fits and drapes like a modern machine-knit, and if I wanted to make a cosplay that actually creates the same silhouette, that's what I'd use. Though personally I'd probably discard the silhouette and try to make something with a woven fabric that simply fits more realistically, and if I were to redesign Sera's base look, this is the one change I'd make.
The shape of the tunic is what really gives away the contemporary influence on Sera's outfit design. Leggings and skinny jeans came into fashion in a big way in the mid-2000s, often paired with a longer drapey top, and they hung on through the mid-2010s when Dragon Age: Inquisition was released, and were an obvious influence on the design of all the female companions as well as the female Inquisitor armor styles. Cold-shoulder tops were also a popular trend in the early 2010s. (I guess Dragon Age: Origins was on the cutting edge there.) Asymmetry and shredded clothing were also 2010s trends.
I also want to take a moment to look at Sera's shoes! Her base outfit includes what appears to be some kind of black slip-on shoe. These shoes are interesting to me because I think that like the breeches, they might be men's shoes. There's a similarity to the shoes in this concept art:

I think this is pretty neat because while the real-world influences on Sera's look can be clearly tied to trends in women's fashion, in-universe her clothing is probably two-thirds menswear. I think that's pretty cool and maybe something to consider with regard to Sera's personal gender presentation as a lesbian in the context of the society she lives in.
I suspect Sera's shoes to be a bit older and out of fashion, since they bear a distinctly rounded toe and the Orlesian high fashion of the moment favors a pointed toe. Like the rest of her clothing, I would guess the shoes to be salvaged or stolen.
So overall, despite a few quibbles, I think Sera's base style is pretty great and very appropriate to her character. Her look is proudly lower-class in a highly-stratified society, visibly Fereldan while living in the Orlesian capital, and gender-non-conforming amidst a highly-gendered aristocratic culture.
It's pretty cool! I like it a lot.

Historically ever after part 5
Darling Charming 2 New And Improved!
I wanted to do an updated version of this post because, it was really just my second attempt at doing something like this so it's not really the best and I've learned quite a bit more about 18th century fashion since then and I'm not really satisfied with that post anymore. Darling was the fist character that I decided to make these posts on because everybody kind of knows that her design was 18th century inspired. I think that it's just one of the recognisable historical styles .

Starting with the dress, it has an open front showing another layer underneath like most styles of dresses from the Georgian period which usually had a petticoat underneath as well as a matching stomacher if one was worn. The robe robe a la francaise is, I think the most iconic for this look. The robe a la francaise also featured large box pleats at the back and were commonly worn over side hoops which gave the iconic wide hip look.

I think that darlings dress more closely resembles an English gown or robe a l’anglaise which is more fitted and less often worn with side hops therefore usually having a more round skirt shape.

Either way it doesn't really matter as I doubt that the people designing these outfits really had this in mind. But I'll leave this article by the American Duchess which dose a good job explaining the different styles of 18th century gowns if you're interested.
We also have those lovely elbow length frilled sleeves which were common on fashionable gowns.

The print on her dress really resembles some of the floral patterns common during this period, such as these ones I found in the Met's online collections.

Her hair is swept back and curled in a way that's meant to reference the large fancy hair styles iconic to the period, mostly around the mid 18th century. Feathers, ribbons and jewellery were all pretty common hair pieces.

While were talking about hair I'd also like to mention that we plenty of primary sources indicating the use of blue and pink hair powder during this time. I don't know a lot about that (or just historical hair in general I'm trying my best), but Abbey Cox did a great video the history of coloured hair, and after watching that I was able to find portraits showing it. It's such a niche fun fact that I don't think that it was intentional and they probably just chose blue to go with the colour scheme they already had but it's still cool.

Her jewellery was interesting to look into, full disclosure I don't know much about jewellery outside of the Victorian era and even then my knowledge is pretty limited so I was mainly digging through the V&A archives and comparing them.
Her necklaces are I think the most similar. You got the jewels arranged in a circle around another jewel and the elaborate patterns.

I think her bracelet is more armour inspired I'm not really able to get a good enough look at it to notice much detail.

With her flower shaped ring I was either expecting to either find nothing or something similar but smaller which they made more bulky for doll production. I didn't find a similar ring, most were verry simple in shape, but I did find this broch and gasped verry loudly when I did because it was so similar.

I might do another one on her dragon games outfit, but I don't really think there's anything there, and this post is getting long, nothing compared with what I have in the works for Lizzie but... I have homework to do and this has already taken up enough of my time.

Modesty rules I lived with
Note: This is from my experience only. There are many people in this world living with many different sets of modesty guidelines, and no two groups are necessarily the same. My experience is not meant to be representative of every purity culture/modesty/high control group situation.
Homeschool co-op rules
No pants, not even khakis
No shorts
Shirt must be no lower than three fingers from collarbone
No cap sleeves, tank tops, spaghetti straps, or any other kind of sleeveless shirt style
Shirt must not ride up and show any skin if you bend over
Shirt must not ride up and show and skin if you lift hands
Shirt must not show any cleavage if you bend over
Skirts must be at mid-kneecap or below OR Skirt must be below the knee (the rule changed once or twice while I was there, going back and forth between these two)
No prints, not even floral
Clothes cannot be clingy or form-fitting
Shoes can’t have logos
No patterned socks or socks with words or pictures on them
No leggings under skirts
No yoga pants under skirts
You MAY wear jeans under your skirts if it’s super cold, but absolutely no fitted or skinny jeans
No slits in skirts or dresses, even small ones
No skirt or dress should show the curve of your rear
No bras that emphasize the breast area or show nipple, even on accident
Nothing in general that will distract the boys in class, because it’s both disruptive to education and unfair to boys to cause them to stumble in their hearts/minds/etc.
Yes, we did have a giant baggy mens t-shirt of shame if one of the moms decided we broke the modesty guidelines.
Daily life rules

Pants have to be loose leg, INCLUDING through the thigh–so nothing like flare jeans, fitted bootcuts, or bell bottoms either.

I had to perform modesty checks each time I put on clothes (which involves using a full length mirror to check for cleavage and skin showing when you move and bend), to make sure it all went together without breaking rules. Whenever necessary, I’d have to do them for my mom as well, and if I was being particularly stubborn, she would sometimes call in the big guns (my dad) to come in, look me up and down, and back her up that it was inappropriate, because he’s a guy and knows how all guys think when they see xyz (insert modesty crime I’m currently doing/wearing here).

Cadybear's MC Wardrobes: Evie Ayana, OG HSS Book 1 (Part 1). Featuring some edits by me!
This is a new series that was inspired by @tveitertotwrites's Outfit Replacements Series.
How this series goes: With each book, for a MC I'm invested in, I'll assess each of their in-game outfits. How much do I like or dislike the outfit? Is this something that suits my MC's style, or does it make me go "My MC would NOT wear/own this"? And for the outfits that my MC would not wear or own, how would I alter or replace them? I'm not going to use screenshots from the actual game because I can't be arsed. Also I want to use the different sprite expressions to express how my MC would feel about each outfit.
I like to think this is a good opportunity to elaborate on my MCs' dress styles, and show off some edits :D
First up, we'll be assessing the wardrobe from OG HSS Book 1, for the one and only, my beloved Evie Ayana! However, I've had to make this into two parts because of Tumblr's 30 image limit.
Directory for the other parts will be included in the reblogs after I've completed the posts for all books!
Ch 1: "Sweet Dreams" Pajamas

The pants are nice and 100% in Evie's style. Evie LOVES soft fuzzy textures and loose cozy soft pants.
The camisole top, on the other hand, is... not really her taste. It's a bit too short, and the lace trim isn't quiiiite her thing.
Verdict: Only partly in Evie's wardrobe. Alter by replacing the top.

Here's what this outfit would look more like in Evie's style. As well as some alternate pajamas she'd have, because she would absolutely adore those mint-colored smiley-face ice cream pajamas.
Ch 1: "Cool for School" Starter Outfit

Perfect. All the yes. Very gender. Especially the smiley face button and the kitten button. 100%, Evie's fall casual outfit. (I kind of like also that both she and Emma wear tops with horizontal stripes for their fall casual outfits)
Verdict: Part of Evie's wardrobe, and is Evie's official fall casual outfit. Keep it as is.
Ch 1: "Morning Jog" Starter Outfit

Not bad, but the sweater top is definitely far too short for Evie. She doesn't cares much for leggings also, she far prefers slightly loose soft pants.
Verdict: Not quite part of Evie's wardrobe. Alter by lengthening the sweater and stretching the leggings.

Here's what this outfit would approximately look more like to suit Evie's tastes (yeah, unfortunately some of these outfits don't like it when I use the Liquify tool to stretch them). This one, she'd love as an outfit for pajamas, lounging around the house, or for a cool day workout.
Ch 1: "Cardi Cute" Starter Outfit

This outfit truly is super cute, I love the floral pattern and the heart necklace and so would Evie. This is one of the few more fem-leaning outfits Evie would be comfortable wearing– she is okay with skirts or dresses every now and then, so long as A) they're loose/flowy, B) mid-thigh length or lower, and C) absolutely no leg/thigh slits.
However, she'd far prefer this as a spring casual outfit. Something more flowery, light, and carefree like this outfit is far better for spring, both weather wise and aesthetic wise.
Verdict: Part of Evie's wardrobe. Keep it as is (but use it only in Book 3).
Ch 1: "The Bombshell" Premium Starter Outfit

I love this floral print, and so would Evie. But this length of top is not her style, and neither is the choker(?)-style necklace.
Evie doesn't really care for midriff/belly-revealing outfits unless they allow her to put her abs on display (and even then, she's still very picky about the style), and, well... obviously the in-game f!MC sprite does not have abs. PB give us muscular f!MC options challenge (failed).
Of course, even if the sprite did have abs, the top wouldn't really show them. So it's not worth the diamonds to me.
If it was longer? I absolutely would spend the diamonds (though probably for it to be a spring outfit).
Verdict: Only partly in Evie's wardrobe. Alter by lengthening the top and making the choker necklace into a regular necklace.

Here's what this outfit would approximately look more like to suit Evie's tastes.
Ch 1: "Dare to be Different" Premium Starter Outfit

Evie would love this shade of blue and definitely would own the necklaces. She might find the flower crown cute (but probably wouldn't wear it much).
However, both the dress on its own and the outfit as a whole are not her style at all. Especially not the yellow leggings. They do not look good with this color dress.
And it feels more like a semiformal/party outfit to me anyways, so yeah. Maybe some other MC I make would like this, but not Evie.
Verdict: Only partly in Evie's wardrobe. Keep the jewelry and the flower crown for other potential outfits, but ditch the rest.
Ch 2: "Summer Fling" Premium Outfit for Brian's Pool Party

NOPE! Absolutely not! The style of top combined with how short it is, is not for Evie at all. And you wouldn't catch her DEAD in short shorts.
She might like some of the jewelry, though. But that's about it.
I could edit or alter this one, by replacing the shorts with jeans and then making a longer version of the top... but even then, I don't think this kind of top is quite her style.
Verdict: Evie would NOT own this. Replace entirely. Keep the jewelry for other potential outfits, but ditch the rest.

The outfit that m!MC gets is much more her style. May not be as attention-grabbing, but it's her way of being the hottest girl at the pool party. Though she would also be the type to just show up to the party in her regular casual outfit. That works just as well too.

Ch 2: Swimsuit

I like this pattern print and so would Evie. And she'd definitely love to wear a bikini to show off her abs. Though... preferably with a pair of swim trunks. That style of bikini bottom is just a HUGE no-no for Evie. I mean, she probably would wear it for comfort, but just underneath her swim trunks
Also, the bracelets... they're cute, but they're a rather odd addition to this outfit. IDK.
Verdict: Technically part of Evie's wardrobe, but needs the addition of an extra piece. Keep the outfit itself as is, but alter by putting swim trunks over the bottoms.

Ch 6: Football Uniform

My baby jock girl in her first uniform. The utter joy expressed in the slow-printing "My first uniform!" text in the scene is so absolutely deserved.
Look at her. So gender. I'm so proud of her.
Verdict: Technically not in Evie's wardrobe because you have to return uniforms at the end of the season, but the point is, Evie would love wearing it. Keep it as is.
The football uniform is, of course, determinant on activity choice. Even though Evie's canon is being a jock in all three books, I'll also review the band and cheer uniforms, because I can.
BONUS ROUND: Ch 6: Band Uniform

So snazzy! In the AU where Evie joins band, she would absolutely rock this outfit. Especially the top.But I don't think she'd like wearing it for the outdoors band practices on hotter days.
Verdict: Technically not in Evie's wardrobe because you have to return uniforms, but the point is, Evie would love wearing it (in the band!Evie AU). Keep it as is.
BONUS ROUND: Ch 6: Cheer Uniform

Verdict: Technically not in Evie's wardrobe because you have to return uniforms, but either way, Evie would NOT wear this. Alter by replacing the skirt with pants and lengthening the top.

If Evie did cheer (it's not quite her thing, but she isn't completly closed to the idea), she'd much rather wear pants like in the m!MC's cheerleader uniform. But would still want a sleeveless top, to better show off her biceps.
Ch 9: "Eye of the Tiger" and "Hear My Roar" Premium Tiger Mascot Suits for the pep rally

Both of these are pretty good, I think Evie would really dig that white one. But at the same time, I'm not fully sure she would be up to wearing a mascot outfit. She'd be worried about how hot and sweaty it'd get in there.
But at the same time, I also want that scene where she accidentally throws a school logo t-shirt into Aiden's face. Especially since it parallels with a later scene later on in the same chapter where he accidentally hits her with a crumpled up ball of paper.
Verdict: Keep both outfits as they are, but whether or not Evie would wear them is still being decided. Come back to this later.
Ch 11: "Garb of the Enemy" Premium Disguise for sneaking into Hearst

Aside from the comfy-looking jacket and the cute bow, this just isn't Evie's style (though at least the skirt isn't as small, lmao).
I think she'd also question why no one else in the group can wear a disguise, and would doubt the ability of this outfit to truly disguise her.
So to her, it wouldn't be worth it to wear this. Have Julian be the fake Hearst cheerleader instead tbh. I mean, he did do that in Prime once. It'd be a pretty neat little bonus callback, especially considering the more mature Choices!Julian likely wouldn't be as embarrased about it as Prime!Julian was.
Verdict: Evie would NOT wear this, not even for the temporary questionable disguise. But she would only partly own it. Keep the jacket and bow and maybe alter it for a different outfit (Mia probably would let her), but ditch the rest. Let Mia burn it later lol. Well, after Julian wears it as a disguise.

Now, Max's letterman jacket for the m!MC on the other hand... Evie would still be unsure about being the only one in a disguise and its effectiveness as a disguise, but it suits her much better and she'd be more willing to wear it. I mean, just look at her!

Robin stood inside her bathroom, staring into the mirror trying to curl her hair. Though she was rather good with rollers, she wasn’t that great with a curling iron. She could never figure out how to not crease her hair with the clamp. Unfortunately for her, the rollers had been left in her bag on the tour bus.
She tried hard to not burn her hands. She pinched strands of her hair with the very tips of fingers. “Ah,” she shook her hand around as if air would cure the burn she managed to get on the side of her pinky. “Shit.” 
After her bedroom, the bathroom was her second favorite room in the house. Her and Gareth had painted it a dark forest green with shimmery gold trim. She had loved antique shopping so she spent almost two months searching for the perfect mirror. The one she had settled on was an oblong shape. The frame was metal wrapped ivy that was a tarnished gold color. She had hung so it was standing tall rather than wide. 
Steve had helped mount shelves on the wall behind her after they had used metallic spray paint to match the mirror's color. The finishing piece had been the canvas she had hung across from the toilet. It was a cartoon fox playing a guitar but his shirt said ‘Fuck the System’. She had scored that gem sitting against a dumpster in New York after a show. She could never guess why someone would have thrown it out but she felt lucky it was hers. 
She finally finished her hair then decided to add some eyeliner. For her outfit she had decided on a black skirt with her beloved Bowie shirt. 
Before walking out the door she had grabbed her bucket hat. It was a Jurassic Park hat and she had been waiting to wear it just for this occasion. Even if it was a gawky yellow and green to match the park’s vehicle, she didn’t mind. She had seen it in the window of a movie prop shop in California and knew she had to have it for her collection.
Luckily for Robin, finding Nancy’s house wasn’t that bad. She had only taken one wrong turn but realized it before she got lost. When she pulled up Nancy was outside sitting on her steps. She stood up quickly, grabbing her bag. 
She was wearing a floral mid length skirt but had paired it with a graphic t-shirt that said ‘I Heart My Pet T-Rex’. “Hey!” She said enthusiastically. 
“Nancy Wheeler, I am literally begging you to tell me where you got your shirt.” 
She clicked her seatbelt and let out a laugh, “I knew you’d enjoy it even though it doesn’t match the skirt.” 
“I especially love it for that reason.” She backed out of the driveway carefully, “So?” 
“Oh,” she sucked a breath in, “Don’t be mad, okay? I got it from a thrift store. For all we know it’s one of a kind.” 
“I guess I’ll have to rob you. I need it for my collection.” 
“What collection?” Though she wasn’t looking at her, Robin knew Nancy had raised an eyebrow when asking. 
“I have a silly shirt collection. Every stop of the tour where we have time to dick around I find a thrift store and buy the most ridiculous shirt I can find.” 
“No way,” she half snorted. “I would love to see it someday.”
“Because you have an interest or because you’re jealous and want to rob me?” 
“Excuse me?” she pretended to sound offended. 
Robin glanced at her, “Well if I show you where I live, who’s gonna stop you from breaking in when I’m on tour? Imagine the heartbreak I would feel coming home to find my ‘I shoved a hot dog in my ass in New York and all I got was this shirt’ t-shirt missing? Well, Nance let me just tell you, it would be worse than heartbreak. It would be, like, devastation.” 
She could see Nancy’s mouth crack into a grin but she also looked a bit shocked. “You’re joking. You don’t have a shirt that says that.” 
Robin shrugged, “Guess you’ve never been to New York.” 
“I have but I didn’t get a shirt when I did it.”
Robin couldn’t stop her mouth from dropping. She couldn’t believe Nancy Wheeler had a dirty sense of humor. They both laughed and Robin shook her head, “That was inappropriate.” 
She acted as if she were offended, “You started that and then set me up for the line. That’s on you.” They laughed again then Nancy pointed, “Oh! Take that road, it’s a shortcut.” 
Robin turned on her blinker, following her instructions. One thing Robin enjoyed most about the fall was the setting sooner. She loved early nights. “It’s a blood moon tomorrow,” Nancy said as if she had read Robin’s thoughts about the sky. 
“Oh shit. Really? That’s so cool, too bad I’ll be kicking ass on stage in Michigan.”
“I’ll take a picture for you.”
“Are you a photographer now too? Did you pick that up from Jonathan?” Robin didn’t mean to say it, it just sort of happened. But once it was out she realized she hadn’t asked about Jonathan. She knew the two of them had split up shortly before Robin had left Hawkins. The two had gone their separate ways but Robin didn’t really know what he was up to.
Nancy laughed which made Robin feel better about bringing him up. “Please. I just mean a little disposable camera. I could never work that thing like Jonathan does.”
“How is he by the way? If you don’t mind me asking… Unless you don’t want to talk about it of course.”
Robin could see Nancy look out the window but she started, “He’s good actually. I saw him last year when I was in California for an interview. We met up for coffee. He works for himself as a photographer but I think he wants to do movie promo. He said he had dabbled in it but it’s hard making a place for yourself in a city so big. Not that he couldn’t do it. Jon’s very talented. He just gets in his own way.” She paused for a moment then looked over. 
Robin glanced at her for a second not wanting to take her eyes off the road for too long. “Hopper and Joyce got married. El and Will are both in school for film. El picked up an interest in special effects and Will wants to do script writing. He’s always been so full of ideas. They actually go to school in Illinois. They all share an apartment here.” Nancy paused to think, “Dustin and Lucas are both going school for science. Lucas is going to Notre Dame with a full ride. Max is actually working in gaming. I’m trying to set something up with her soon.” 
This conversation had hit Robin in the gut. She forgot just how much she missed everyone. Even though she stayed busy most of the time she also had Steve which was like having a piece of her old life always with her. She never stopped to think about what all she truly left behind. “What about Erica?”
“She graduates in May. The last time I talked to Lucas he said she had a lot of schools looking at her. She basically has her pick.” 
Robin smiled at that. She would never forget meeting Erica and the danger that followed shortly after. She was always so smart and strong minded. She wasn’t surprised to hear she was doing well. She wasn’t surprised that all of them were doing good. They were an intelligent group of kids, even if they had been smart asses. “It’s crazy. Sometimes I never really slow down to think about how much time has passed. Sometimes when I wake up I still expect to be surrounded by posters of Star Wars and Madonna. Seventeen all over again. It takes me a moment to realize just how much has happened,” Robin stated.
“I think that’s part of the trauma. Like time passes by fast, that’s true. However I think after what we all went through… I mean we had no choice but to keep ourselves distracted. At first it was like living to forget everything but soon you sort of do. Sometimes, when I take a step back from everything, I feel seventeen again. I feel like I’m watching everyone around me suffer and I think about it all. But I blink and it’s like I’m back to work.” Nancy had grown quieter with every confession.
There were things Robin never spoke about out loud. It was exactly what Nancy had said. She had done so much to forget so bringing them makes them real again. “I know exactly what you mean. I still have nightmares sometimes.”
Nancy glanced over at Robin. They pulled into the parking lot of the movie theater. Neither one of them moved first. Robin knew what the upon request was. Once they exited the car they would resume as normal. The past would be the past again. “I do too,” Nancy confessed. 
They sat in silence for a few more moments before Robin pulled her door handle to put Nancy at ease. She noticed Nancy’s chest fall with relief before she too stepped out of the car. “Man, I haven’t been to a theater in ages,” she said, joining Robin in stride. 
The two walked toward the front of the building, “Me either! I can’t wait. Ugh. Movie theater popcorn means everything to me,” Robin said excitedly. 
“What do you miss most when you’re on the road?” Nancy asked as the two waited in line at the ticket window. 
“Hmm,” she tilted her head in thought. What did Robin miss the most? “Usually I would say my bed but I think I miss the overall normalcy of being home. Traveling and playing shows is so much fun. And even though the routine when you’re out on the road feels so chaotic there’s hardly any spontaneity. Like, wanting to go to the movies at the last minute? Nope. Deciding to stay in and cook cheap food and watch the Goonies? Nope. You miss being able to do normal things that would usually seem mundane.” 
Nancy looked as if she was thinking Robin’s words over carefully. “I think sometimes we have to make sacrifices to be happy. Because I mean, if we’re being honest, what do you think you’d be doing if not music? Were you wanting to go to college beforehand?”
Robin knew exactly what Nancy meant. She had thought about it before, many times. She had no idea what she would be doing if she weren’t playing in Corroded Coffin. “Uhm, I think I did? I mean, my parents wanted that for me. I don’t really know what I would have done. I didn’t know that back then either. I probably would have picked a major without much consideration just because I would have panicked about taking too long. Maybe I would have become a teacher. Can you picture me in a classroom?”
Nancy laughed softly while shaking her head, “No. Not really. Maybe like a summer camp counselor?” 
Robin scoffed, “What is that supposed to mean?”
She laughed again, “Well, I mean just mean, your bucket hat and previous cargo shorts. Not to mention your lame t-shirts. It’s all camp counselor vibes.”
Robin’s jaw dropped and she acted like she was offended. “You’re cruel.”
They stepped up to the ticket window and Robin paid for their tickets to the movie. As they stepped through the double doors Nancy tilted her head, “I’m only joking. I don’t know though. I think being a drummer suits you so well. It’s hard to imagine anything else but maybe something in art. Can you draw?”
“Nope, not even a stick figure.”
“Really? Shocking. You have such an artsy personality.” 
They stepped toward the concessions together where Nancy purchased a large popcorn and two sodas. “Oh, okay. I got it. You probably would have tried working in film right? Maybe behind the camera? Or set design? You love movies.”
“This is true,” Robin took the drink Nancy offered her. “I think working on film sets would be fun. A little hectic, but probably fun. What would you have done? Was there ever anything besides writing you thought about?”
They made their way into the room they had been directed towards. It was still dimly lit with only a handful of others scattered about. They made their way to the top, Nancy still thinking about her answer. “I don’t know. Writing is something I have been passionate about for as long as I can remember. I know my mom and I discussed the medical field once but I don’t think I would like being a nurse. Maybe I would own a bookstore somewhere. Just something comfy but something I would still enjoy.”
The lights went out completely and the screen in front of them came to life. They sat through the trailers, sharing the popcorn before the movie finally started. 
The two sat through the movie, sharing popcorn and looks of shock or amazement during the scenes that had blown them away. It had been everything Robin had hoped and more. During the scene where Ellie had restored power and the dino had jumped from behind her, Nancy had let out a gasp of horror before clutching Robin’s arm. “Holy shit!” she whispered, trying to laugh it off quietly only to lose her composure when Ellie had grabbed Mr.Arnold’s arm. 
The scene that had gotten Robin was the one with Tim and Lex in the kitchens with the velociraptors. 
As they made their way back to the car Nancy had let out a loud breath, “You know. I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting; however, I didn’t think it was gonna be that suspenseful! It was kind of scary!”
“Honestly it was so good. I definitely get all the talk! Thank you for coming with me!” She stepped toward the passenger side of the car to open the door for Nancy. Nancy slid in before Robin shut the door and got in the car herself. 
“I’m really glad you invited me! I don’t get out much aside from work. Usually I’m working at home too, though.”
“I wish I had known sooner you were living so close. Tour is going to be over in like three weeks so maybe we can hang out again?”
“I think that would be a great idea! Maybe we can make seeing movies together a normal thing for us!” 
“Ohhh, I would love that. Steve and Eddie? Terrible at sitting through a movie. Probably the worst movie date ever.” 
Nancy laughed, “I can see that.” 
Robin took the road that she had turned down on the drive to the theater. Nancy tapped the armrest between the two of them. It was completely dark now but luckily there was no lack of street light. “So, I’ll call you Tuesday?”
“Huh? Oh, the article. Yeah! I should have the first draft by then. I’m hoping the photos will be developed tomorrow when I get in. I’m excited to see what we have to work with.” 
Robin’s cheeks flushed at the thought of the photos. She looked good that day but that didn’t make her any nervous to see them herself. “Promise me if I look dumb you’ll throw them out and just do the story. No photos.” 
“What? No! You looked so fucking good! Don’t worry, Robin. This is gonna be so badass, I promise.”
Robin let out a sigh of relief, “I trust you.” She finally said. 
“Good, it’s literally my job.” 
There was a moment of comfortable silence before Robin pulled into Nancy’s driveway. “You can call me anytime, by the way. Not just on Tuesday. I get lonely here, it’s nice having friends.” 
“Ooh, that reminds me!” Robin fished around her center console, finding an old receipt and pen. She scribbled her number down and handed it to Robin. “Obviously you won’t be able to call me while I’m gone. But, when I’m back, call me when you’re free!” 
“Great,” Nancy smiled big, sliding the paper down into her bag. She reached for the door handle then paused, “How tired are you?” 
“I’m not?” Robin responded with a raised eyebrow. 
“Do you want to go to Painter’s Port?” She asked. When Robin gave her a questioning look she continued with an explanation. “Painter’s Port is a lake a few miles away. Not even really a port which is funny they call it that. It’s not even really a lake. It’s really a good sized pond. But, it’s usually pretty empty at night. It's a nice place to look at the stars.” 
Robin thought about it for a moment. She had to be up at five to leave for the bus but she could try to nap while they drove. It would be at least three weeks before she got to see Nancy again. Saying no would be silly and also make her a bad friend. “Will you drive? I don’t like driving at night and since you know where it is…?” Robin trailed off, shrugging her shoulders. 
Nancy’s face split into a smile and she nodded, “Of course! First, let me go grab a blanket and some wine!” 
Robin watched as Nancy bounced up her driveway and disappeared into her house. She scooted over into the passenger seat and smiled to herself. She really enjoyed Nancy’s company and it was obvious Nancy enjoyed hers. She wouldn’t have wanted to extend their time out together had she not, right? 
After a few short moments Nancy exited the house holding two bottles of wine and a blanket. She slid into the driver's seat, dropping the contents of her arms into Robin’s lap. “Ready?” She was smiling excitedly so Robin nodded at her with genuine happiness. “Let’s go,” she said before pulling out of her driveway.

A list of things I sewed in 2022
Last year I compiled a list of the things I sewed in 2021, except for some reason, I made the list in November so it missed some of the stuff I made at the end of the year, like my reversible apron and the cottagecore/modernized chemise a la reine, among others.
So this year, I figured I’d actually do my year of sewing in review at the actual end of the year. (Btw I have no idea if these are actually in chronological order. This is just the order I found them in on my blog, which is the order in which I photographed them.)
First, a needle holder made from scraps of fabric from old projects, because I was just keeping all my needles in plastic cases and desperately needed a better way to organize them.

Then I made a short underbust c0rset I drafted myself by tweaking the fit issues I had from the previous c0rset I made and self-drafted in 2021. That previous c0rset was based on a dress pattern that I got by tracing one of my dresses that I then used to make the silk satin dress I wore to a friend’s wedding. (Yes, this c0rset was made with the same navy blue silk satin I used for the dress. No, the two projects have nothing to do with each other, as the dress was not made to be worn over a c0rset.) It has a zipper front and laces completely up in the back since it’s not meant for waist reduction. I use it as a back brace for days at work when I’m expecting to spend a lot of time standing.

Then there were the first regency shift, short stays, and partially bodiced petticoat that I made and never got around to using for anything because the silhouette wasn’t right for the 1810-1815 era gown I want to make. I still have them hanging in my closet for when I finally get around to making something from the earlier 1790s-1805 era. The partially bodiced petticoat is absolutely necessary because I made the stays a little too long and they rise above the mid-bust level and make lines. The shift works fine for this set of stays, but it’s just a tad tight in the bust to work with later stays that lift the bustline much higher.

Because the regency short stays weren’t the right shape and height for the 1810s look I was aiming for, I made another set of regency stays after that. This I made and immediately hated because the silhouette was all wrong. I used the Bernhardt pattern but didn’t get the bust and hip gusset shapes right, and I used bias tape for binding, instead of straight grain binding, so the whole top edge stretched out and flattened my bust instead of lifting it. I also found out that the Bernhardt stays pattern just inherently doesn’t work if you have scoliosis at the level of your spine where you take the measurements needed for scaling this pattern. These stays are now in my scrap bag because I harvested the boning and lacing from them for the new and improved pair (discussed below but not pictured, for decency reasons).

After that came the historybounding Victwardian shirtwaist and skirt that I made this summer. The floral skirt is a calf-length full circle skirt with a pleated back and is my absolute favorite skirt in my wardrobe, if only for the sheer amount of work that went into making it. The only issue is that I miscalculated when I was cutting out the waistband, so it ended up about 1 inch too short. It’s still wearable though, and I don’t mind it too much because the slightly tighter waistband means that the weight of the back pleats won’t drag the back of the waistband down. Alas, I don’t wear it all that often because I spend all of my waking hours either in a hospital where I wear scrubs or in a doctor’s office where people cough on stuff. While the skirt is machine washable, it’s a nightmare to iron, and the sateen weave warps with every wash. The blouse I’m much less fond of because it’s too poofy for daily wear, and the lace collar is annoying to deal with because it somehow manages to gape and choke me at the same time.

Then I took apart my purple floral skirt from 2021 and remade it because I have control issues and perfectionism issues and there is a long list of problems I had with the original skirt and wanted to fix:

Because my first attempt at a Victwardian shirtwaist was only minimally successful, I took another attempt at a historybounding blouse, this time with a Peter Pan collar and tucks instead of lace. I did go back and reposition the sleeve gathers after taking this picture. Still not entirely happy with the sleeves because I prefer 3/4 length or elbow length sleeves, so I tend to roll these up when I wear them. Also not entirely happy with the positioning of the collar. I feel like it should be higher up on the neck and sloped, not flat against the collarbone area, so I kind of want to make a set of detachable Peter Pan collars that I can wear with different outfits.

Then in August-September, I made the Capetember cape while working inpatient for a month. I didn’t end up wearing this one as much as I thought I would, mostly because it’s too short to curl up and wrap myself up to lounge in. But it did keep me warm for the like 2 slightly chilly days of autumn we had this year. Next time I’m including arm slits for practicality.

My first attempt at Edwardian/late Victorian combinations took 2 solid weeks.  The combinations themselves didn’t take all that long to assemble or drape on myself, but what sucked up most of that time was the amount of hand embroidering I took upon myself to do because I couldn’t find the right kind of beading lace to go on the waistband and leg cuffs. The combinations are based on the extant from the Met. I think I ended up making the straps too short because it’s not blousing at the waist quite right. The waistband lace is pretty, but it’s too bulky to wear under c0rsets, and I cut the buttonholes too narrow for the ribbon to come through without puckering and folding on itself. The drawers overall are just not full enough and bunch too much in certain places, so if I ever make this again, I’m going to try the Laura Baldt Clothing for Women circular drawers pattern instead. I would also go for a thinner, drapey-er fabric next time.

Then I made another c0rset. This time it’s an Edwardian S-bend c0rset based on the Aranea Black Tulip pattern. It’s made from a heavy cotton canvas with an outer layer of silk shantung. It’s also the first c0rset I’ve made thus far that actually has a metal split busk, which makes getting in and out of it way faster. It still needs some hip padding to fit properly, so that’s going to have to be a project for next year.

And then I finally circled back to the regency era to make a new set of stays to redeem myself. They’re definitely an improvement on the old pair, but I can’t post pictures because it’s an underbust design, and the historically inaccurate cotton voile shift I’m wearing under them is completely sheer. So you’re just going to have to enjoy this photo of the new fully bodiced petticoat that I also made around that time and am wearing over it for modesty. (You can also barely see how the shift is just ever so slightly compressing my bust down because the new stays lift it into a higher position than the shift has room for.)

And then, since I was in the business of doing everything twice when it comes to regency costuming, I made another regency shift. This one is made from 100% linen (but probably not as sturdy as 19th century linen). It makes for a really comfy nightgown too.

And then, I finally got started on the regency gown project that I keep referencing but never got off my butt to do this year. I managed to embroider and finish the bodice before the end of 2022, so I’m including it on this list even though the gown is still nowhere near finished.  (Using my hand as a censor bar because my new 1810s stays are really good at lifting the bust, and my new shift was being Opinionated today and didn’t want to help contain it.) The final gown will have a front bib panel that’s attached to the apron front skirt and will cover everything that’s currently threatening to spill out of the neckline of my shift.

a seam roll I made from scraps of the purple floral and black and white chair slipcover fabrics
a set of fabric face masks I made from the last scraps of the same two fabrics. I haven’t worn them all that much, though, since they tend to fog my glasses and I prefer the regular blue masks
a couple of polyester satin half-slips that I made to wear under my skirts so they don’t cling to my tights when I walk
a mousepad I made for a coworker’s birthday
a wine tote and matching coasters I made for another coworker’s birthday
a couple of floral embroidery pieces I made for two other coworkers’ birthdays
an apron I made as a going-away present for a former coworker’s graduation
a fleece blanket I made for my cat
a pocket I sewed into the inside of my whitecoat so I could have my iPad on my person while rounding in the hospital without worrying about accidentally leaving it in a patient room
a newer, bigger, studier tote bag to replace the one I made in 2021 (nothing happened to the old one, I just wanted a bigger bag for work)
an alteration I made to improve the fit of a dress I’ve owned since 2017 that had since shrunk in the wash and was too tight in the shoulder area
an Edwardian dip waist belt I made from the same floral fabric I used for the skirt above
Overall, this looks like a pretty good list for someone who sews exclusively by hand. With 33 projects/items made, and me working 12 weeks of inpatient shifts in the past year, I’m basically averaging about 1 project per week on the weeks that I have the energy for creative pursuits.
Looking back, it seems like about half the things I made this year were 1800s-1810s and 1900s underwear that no one is ever going to see. Hopefully I’ll get around to making actual clothes to go over these pieces in the coming new year.

In detail:
Bella: The one with the most distinctive style, especially now she no longer has an uptight university job. Fishnets, big combat boots, black mini skirt or jeans shorts, ratty crop tops, band t-shirts, black sports bra and some see through mesh blouse. Just imagine you searched "grunge" on pinterest. Add a big mop of curly auburn hair and obligatory Adele eyeliner. Bella has only 1 hole in her ear and she's normally wearing silver jewelry (small studs), she wears many rings but no bracelets and her nails aren't long (she types all day). If she's forced to do formal wear, she'll be in plain black and embrace the Addams family vibes.
Wendy: GIRLY. Whimsy! FUN! Mid flowy skirts, dresses with ruffles and layers and floral prints, beautiful strappy heels, 80s pop music t-shirts coupled with pink jeans. Funky earrings, bracelets, rings. Glittery nail polish. Mini dresses. She's got chin length brown wavy hair and her sense of style is very Barbie-coded, but she does manage to tone it down for more serious situations, so she doesn't look like a Barbie cosplay.
Vince: Dark wash ripped jeans, black tank top or graphic t-shirts (deep V neck), sometimes a button up, black leather jacket (with the belts and buckles, it's for Style) or his varsity football jacket. Worn hiker boots. Not many accessories because he can't be bothered. If it's warm out he'll be in large jeans shorts and flip flops, he simply cannot be assed.
Leo: Boy-Next-Door extreme. Baby blue jeans, light colored t-shirts with a crew neck, hanging on his frame a little loose. Almost never wears patterns. Leo is still finding so much of his identity and he got bullied for being queer, so he's a little stick in the mud when it comes to style. The less he stands out, the better. Worn converse shoes, will often commit the sin of wearing jeans on jeans. His jeans jacket is his favorite and he'll wear it 4 days a week if needed. Also he wears his team hoodie a lot and he'll wear the jacket on top of the hoodie, much to Jonah's displeasure. For work he's always in suits and button ups, again in the most boring shades and combos.
Lucas: His the son of a heartthrob musician. Lucas knows how to dress with style, he just won't. Very similar to Leo's, except add in a lot of university apparel, team shirts, the varsity jacket and those gym-bro tank tops with armholes so huge a man might as well be wearing nothing.
Jonah: Snob. You know he splurges in silk shirts, he's in social pants 90% of the time. Polo shirts, henleys, cable knit sweaters, formal shoes or vans sneakers, polished clean. Always ironed. Wears deep jewel tones a lot, they bring out the hazel in his eyes. If he's in jeans, they're medium wash and never ripped. Will wear a cardigan and cause Leo to seriously consider not going out with him.
