#Seeing the dune part 2 american centric red carpet and as a devoted aficionado of the books and yk a moroccan person here are my 2 cents #Dune was one of the few Western works inspired by MENA culture that that felt genuine and respectful #But ofc despite the profound symbiosis with Middle Eastern and North African culture evident within the pages of the novels #the movie adaptation lack of substantive representation from these communities both in on-screen portrayals and within production roles was #very much disappointing in part 1 and i doubt there are any change now #While drawing inspiration from the Amazigh peoples of Algeria and Morocco #the film barely skims the surface of its MENA influences leaving substantial potential untapped #Herbert openly acknowledged the profound impact of Islam and MENA culture on his noveIs #from the metaphorical representation of Spice as oil #to the allegorical parallels drawn between the occupation of Arrakis and real-world MENA geopolitics #By marginalizing Arabs from the narrative fabric of Dune the essence of the story is being undermined particularly its anti-colonial core #the irony of this is kiIIing me because this was a direct resuIt of us impérialism on the middIe east #But the reality is that Dune is an American production tailored for an American audience so it makes sense for it to be what it is now #a big production running from its original essence #What adds to my disappointment is the fact that I liked Villeneuve's adaptation of Incendies and I had what you call foolish hope hfhg #Dune feIt Iike a squandered opportunity to authentically depict the cultural milieu that inspired it #Given the narrative's inherent anti-colonial themes #the omission of Arab and North African voices dilute its message if any of it is even left #without representation from Arabs and Amazigh people the cultural essence becomes another appropriated resource watered down to an aestheti #rather than serving as a critique of the destructive actions of colonialists seeking power and dominance #the narrative becomes susceptible to distortion and co-option by the very entities it was intended to condemn and hold accountable

6. How easily could your OC be convinced to do something that goes against their moral compass?

DAI — it would take something pretty extreme, like holding the life of a loved one over his head or reforging the very substance of his soul. he's kinda stubborn. MINAH — it depends on how far afield the something is. her moral compass is already a little wiggly, which makes it easier to talk her into some things, but she can dig her feet in when she has a real actual issue with it (for example, she is totally cool with lying to a prisoner but won't force-feed anyone devil's dust. who understands her moral code? not me) ENIKO — eniko's moral compass is a pinwheel. pay him enough and he'd do pretty much anything. kids are a hard line for him, but to be honest, in the right circumstances any line can be stepped over. (he'd feel wretched after, but when has how he feels ever stopped him)

7. What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?

DAI — he's so much bitchier than anticipated MINAH — she's been quieter than I had planned. part of that is how we play (the perils of internet roleplay), plus I get self conscious about narrating stuff my OC might be doing that's mostly flavor (that won't stop me from posting about it endlessly here). but I also think the whole warden Thing(TM) is a bigger Thing(TM) than she anticipated and she's starting to fray a little bit. ENIKO — his stupid ACCENT what is going on there

19. How does your OC behave when enraged?

DAI — impatient, mostly. it takes a lot to make him furious, but he can get really withering and mean. doesn't necessarily mean he won't keep doing whatever work needs getting done, but he's going to be short-tempered about it MINAH — her rage has turned out to be a cold and close thing. it bubbles up in her chest, but she keeps a tight leash on it. when she externalizes it, she tends to lash out in sharp and specific ways, or ice up completely. I think her rage tends to come with a certain clarity which she feels gives her precision and perspective. I don't know if that's entirely true. ENIKO — well first of all his own feelings don't matter so jot that down. he'll weaponize it if he can (prey animal rage!!) or smother it if it's not helpful. if it's gotten to the point where he's lost control of his own rage, it's probably really horrible and messy for everyone involved. let's get that boy furious and covered in blood

24. What is an alternative life path your OC might have gone down? How different would their life be if they'd made those decisions?

DAI — I cannot conceive of a daichi who didn't join the order, but for argument's sake — au where instead of joining the sunsingers and becoming a cleric, he decided to go down to the underdark and learn more about where he came from. maybe he'd have found the void that way; maybe he'd have met the void tieflings earlier? MINAH — that's redacted. but she thinks about it a lot if that helps. ENIKO — somewhere out there is an alternate universe where he didn't say yes to Sir's offer and instead scraped a living on the streets (bridge?) of Whitebridge for long enough to start sneaking into University lectures and learning magic. He'd be a million times better off, obviously. Equally cynical and probably just as scrappy, but with 60% less trauma and 50% more understanding of his own unique personhood.

#bonus thoughts: #- maybe niko would crop his half elf ears to fit in human social circles without drawing attention to himself. yikes rip #- at least 20% of dai's bitchiness is ozy-related. more of it is izzy-related tho #- freelance adventurer daichi would be a fucking ICON. he'd be a full fighter and a menace with a better sense of humor. still no CHA tho #- other things that have changed with eniko since his conception: middy :3 #- mage eniko would still have joined up with wick just under different circumstances. he'd care a lil more about the politics/cause #(he'd also still have a few levels in rogue) #anyway! ty my dear #daichi #minah #eniko #memery
