It was Christmas Eve, and of course, you had the night shift in the emergency room; you hated working holiday shifts because every time you did the only people who were to come in were drunks who got into fights and people with cooking burns.

So far, it was a slow night with some drunks here and there and no cooking burns; people must be eating out instead of cooking.

You were admiring the Christmas tree the hospital set up in the waiting room when two men came in; one had an arm slung over the others shoulder while his other hand held a guide cane, "Foggy, I'm fine." the one with the cane said as they arrived at the check-in desk. "Matt, you're not okay. I found you on the floor of your apartment-" The man supposedly named Foggy whispered yelled as you cut him off. "Hello, how may I help you two today?" you asked them. "Yeah, hi, I uh was wondering if you could give my friend Matt here a check-up. He uh-" "Fell. I fell in the apartment and he thinks I got hurt." Matt said, cutting Foggy off. "Okay, follow me, and I'll make you sure you didn't bruise or sprain anything," you say to Matt, offering a soft smile to his friend, who looked angry but also nervous for his friend.

Matt denied the wheelchair you offered him, so Foggy helped him make his way to an exam room because he could not put his weight onto one of his legs; Matt sat down on the table "okay, um, ill be right outside, okay, Matt." Foggy said as he left the room, leaving you and Matt, "Okay, can you take your shirt off so I can check to make sure nothing happened to your shoulders and ribs." You requested, "Alright." He said, unbuttoning his white button-up, revealing his upper body.

As you were checking his shoulders for and sprains, you decided to make conversation with him so it'd be less awkward than just examing this poor man in silence, "So Matt, you got a last name?" You asked, moving your hands down more near his collarbone. "Murdock." He answered, not paying any mind to your desperate act of trying to make conversation because he didn't even want to be there in the emergency room at almost midnight on Christmas eve. "Alrighty, Matt Murdock I’m going to exam your ribs now, okay," "You're wasting your time; I'm fine." He uttered, and you sighed, "Listen, I know you don't want to be here, but your friend out there thinks you might've hurt yourself, so let me just finish up examing your ribs, and I'll let you go and just tell your friend you need pain killers and rest, okay?" You said continuing with the exam, and he didn't reply.

After a couple of seconds, Matt spoke up, "You know what, I never did get your name." He asked, "Y/N, my name is Y/N," you answered. "So Y/N, do you have any plans for Christmas?" "Nope, no plans. What about you?" You asked, moving your focus to his other side. "I have no plans either." He replied.

You were happy, to say the least, that he started talking to you, but your happiness soon faded when you touched a specific spot on his side, Matt flinched at the pain and you could tell something was wrong. "Matt, were you punched?" You asked, "Uh, yeah. I sorta got mugged; they probably thought I was an easier target because I'm blind." he responded, "Matt, you should've told me this earlier." you sighed, "I hoped you at least showed them whos boss." you joked, and Matt laughed "I managed to get a few hits in."

"Alright, Matt, you can put your shirt back on; you're not seriously hurt. You have a bruised side; I'm recommending you take ibuprofen and put ice on the area to relieve pain, and do not wrap anything tight around your ribs while they are healing." You recommended as Matt rebuttoned his shirt.

As you were about to leave the room, Matt spoke up, "Oh Y/N, if you're still not doing anything tomorrow for Christmas, would you like to come with me to dinner at the Panna II Garden in the East Village around six?" he asked, "Sure, I'd love to." you responded to him as you left the room.

Maybe working the night shift on Christmas eve wasn't such a bad thing.

The Hunger Games Season of Hope Holiday Gift Exchange is open to all four books (OG trilogy and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), medium (books, movies, etc.), pairing, character, etc. If you’re interested in writing or drawing for THG, please consider joining us!

How it works:

You tell the universe what you want to read (or look at!) and what you are willing to write/offer in return. Sign-ups will close on December 1, 2021.

You get matched with someone who wants to read or write that thing.

Write or create through December 24.

Fics are submitted, then revealed anonymously on December 27.

Oct 10 (Reuters) - An artillery strike that hit a refugee camp near Myanmar's border with China has killed at least 29 people, including women and children, media and sources said on Tuesday, in one of the deadliest attacks on civilians since the return of military rule.

Myanmar has been embroiled in a brutal conflict in multiple regions in the wake of a 2021 coup, with ethnic minority armies and a resistance movement battling to undermine military rule after a fierce crackdown by security forces.

Sources including the shadow National Unity Government (NUG) blamed the military for the shelling, which took place close to midnight on Monday in Kachin State.

A spokesperson for the junta said the military was not responsible.

"We are investigating. We always take care of border peace situation," Zaw Min Tun told People Media, adding that the explosion may have involved an ethnic rebel group's own munitions.

Sources said artillery hit a camp for internally displaced people about 5 km (3 miles) from a base in the border town of Laiza run by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), which has been in conflict for years with Myanmar's military.

Kachin media outlets said 30 people were killed. Reuters could not independently verify the death toll and spokespersons for the KIA could not immediately be reached for comment.

The NUG condemned what it called a vicious attack on civilians and said the world must take action to halt the atrocities and put Myanmar's generals on trial.

"This act of military council is war crime and crime against humanity," NUG spokesperson Kyaw Zaw said, adding an attack at the border with China showed the junta did not respect its neighbour's demand for peace and stability.

The United Nations in Myanmar said on Facebook it was deeply concerned by reports of the incident, adding that "civilians should never be a target".

China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Laiza is the capital of KIA, among the largest of dozens of ethnic groups that have been battling the military for decades.

It sits close to the Chinese border and is home to many civilians living in displacement camps in and around the town. The UN says more than 1 million people have been displaced by the conflict in Myanmar.

A student activist currently in Laiza said the whole town was "shaken" by the explosion and residents were evacuating.

"We are on alert because we worry that there can be second bomb attack," said Justin, who declined to provide a last name. "The locals are worried about that and so people are relocating now."

Kachin media shared a series of graphic images on Facebook of destruction, which could not immediately be verified by Reuters. One showed casualties on the floor, another more than a dozen body bags lined up.

Others showed men in military attire sifting through wreckage and a man carrying the body of a small child.

The incident was the deadliest since an air strike in Myanmar's volatile Sagaing region in April that killed scores of people including civilians.

Khon Ja, a local activist with the Kachin Peace Network Civil society group told Reuters she had visited the local hospital and was told 29 people were dead and 59 wounded.

"The bomb was too strong ... the village was totally destroyed and disappeared," she said.

Europe changed the rules of the internet this week when the Digital Markets Act took effect, holding the biggest tech companies to tough new standards. Now the world is waiting to see which giant will be first to fall foul of the law. One of the architects of the DMA says Apple is a strong candidate for the first formal investigation, describing the company as “low hanging fruit.”

Apple has faced intensifying pressure in recent years from competitors, regulators, and courts in both Europe and the US, over the restrictions it places on app-makers who must rely on its App Store to reach millions of users. Yesterday Apple terminated the developer account of Fornite publisher Epic Games which has challenged the company in US courts and recently announced its intention to launch a rival to the Apple App Store.

German MEP Andreas Schwab, who led the negotiations that finalized the DMA on behalf of the EU Parliament, says that makes Apple a likely first target for non-compliance. “[This] gives me a very clear expectation that they want to be the first,” he tells WIRED. “Apple’s approach is a bit weird on all this and therefore it's low hanging fruit.”

Schwab is not involved in enforcement of the DMA. That’s overseen by the European Commission, which has already demanded “further explanation” as to why Apple terminated Epic’s account and is evaluating whether this violates the DMA.

“Apple’s approach to the Digital Markets Act was guided by two simple goals: complying with the law and reducing the inevitable, increased risks the DMA creates for our EU users,” says the company in a statement sent to WIRED by Apple spokesperson Rob Saunders. Apple has said on its website that alternative app stores carry the risk of malware, illicit code and other harmful content.

The DMA’s rules that aim to “break open” tech platforms require Apple to allow iPhone users to download apps from places other than Apples’ official App Store. The Epic Games Store, announced in January, intended to be launched by the Fortnite-maker Epic, would have been the first alternative app store to take advantage of the new system.

Apple tells WIRED it had the right to terminate Epic’s accounts according to a 2021 California court ruling. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has been a vocal critic of what he styles as Apple’s “app store monopoly” for years, although in January the US supreme court denied a request to hear the latest episode in a lengthy antitrust dispute between the two companies in a victory for the smartphone maker.

The DMA went into force at midnight on March 7 in Brussels—3 pm in Silicon Valley. From that moment, six of the world’s biggest tech companies—Apple, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and TikTok’s Beijing-based owner ByteDance—must comply with a suite of new rules designed to improve competition in digital markets.

In addition to Apple having to allow outside apps, Microsoft Windows will no longer have Microsoft-owned Bing as its default search tool; users of Meta’sWhatsApp will be able to communicate with people on rival messaging apps; and Google and Amazon will have to tweak their search results to create more room for rivals. Companies that don’t comply with the new rules can be fined up to 20 percent of their global turnover.

The new rules should cause the European internet to “change for the better,” says Schwab, a center-right MEP. “To allow more openness, more fairness, and most of all more innovation and therefore new services—that’s the idea.”

Schwab’s comments add to a recent chorus of criticism targeting Apple. The EU’s antitrust chief, Margarethe Vestager, told Bloomberg earlier this week that the DMA will initially focus on sorting out big tech’s app stores. “I think it’s important you can have more than one app store on your phone,” she said on Tuesday.

Following Apple’s removal of Epic, the tone in the hallways of the Commission had become more urgent. “Under the #DMA, there is no room for threats by gatekeepers to silence developers," said Thierry Breton, the EU's industry chief, on X on Thursday, apparently referring to allegations by Epic's Sweeney that Apple had blocked the company's account because of the CEO’s critical Tweets. “I have asked our services to look into Apple’s termination of Epic’s developer account as a matter of priority.”

Flexing the DMA’s powers on Apple’s App Store would advertise how the law can improve life online for the general public, Schwab says. “I think the App Store would be a good example to show what we want to achieve with the DMA,” he says. “They will just see more apps and they will like these apps.”

Giving people choice over where they get mobile apps by requiring Apple and Google to permit alternative app stores on devices is seen as a key pillar of the DMA. In addition to giving users more choice, app developers will also gain more opportunities to to innovate, increasing competition, says Schwab. “With alternative app stores we can make markets a bit broader.”

Making another post for my commissions since my family (sister and father) and I are currently suffering from homelessness and hunger, we need all the help we can get. We became homeless in November 2021 and have been since then. I opened commissions to pay for daily room rent and food. Recently, things have gotten a lot tougher. Most nights we either don't have food for several days or can barely afford to live each day, staying up for the entire day just to pay off rent to have somewhere to stay. We have no family help or friends for somewhere to live or help with finances, and neither of us can work jobs due to not having the right documents or money to get our IDs. This is the best we can do for now.

Right now we haven't eaten at all today and I'm hoping to get some food for tonight before we can't anymore since places stop delivering around midnight. We also need help paying for the room for tomorrow as we currently have no money right now.

As for my art itself, I mainly do character portraits, headshots, scenes, or reference sheets but i can definitely do other things as well! I draw DnD and fantasy works, most surrounding dragon age, and my style is painterly semi realism. My turnaround time is around 4-8 days for smaller commissions (bust, half body, headshot, etc.) and 1-2 weeks for bigger commissions (paintings, couple commissions, fullbodies, etc.). If you ever need an immediate update, feel free to ask for one and I'll definitely send one over to you! I'll of course update in between each stage.
