The more I think about it, the more Across the Spider-Verse feels like a horror movie. A whole society of spider people who aren’t just bonded by shared tragedy, but who actively work to make sure that tragedy keeps happening. It’s a cult of human sacrifice, like Midsommar and The Wicker Man: the kind uncles and stern captains and significant others must keep dying to preserve the natural order. They are the flies in the spiders’ webs.

But how could you think Ted Lasso wasn't happy?
Ah, yes. That unambiguously happy final close-up on the main character. Famously used for indicating clear, unimpeachable happiness in visual storytelling for decades.

the whole diamond heist scene with the lasers in gl2 is genuinely the funniest thing i have ever seen in my entire life. vinny so reassuringly saying “throw me” and ranboo and sneeg not even arguing with him just flat out agreeing to lob him across the room. the different shots of them swinging him back and forth to get momentum. the fucking puppet flying through the air. sneeg and ranboo staring off into the distance to watch him soar, the instant cut to them holding each other screaming. vinny hitting the fucking roof???? the elation. the anvil falling sound effect. the looney tunes stare as it falls from the sky. vinny’s final words. the fucking anvil crushing his head in (and the shock that came watching it live and not being able to pause or rewind and see the cut). ranboo making the world’s worst pun. sneeg’s indignant “i’m not throwing you!’. everyone moving on as if it didn’t happen. truly the funniest scene in all written history. i will never recover.

Ok so Pearl and Midsommar are the only A24 horror movies I’ve seen but I really love the stark differences in morality. In Midsommar, you LOATHE these fucking characters. Josh, Mark, and Christian are just shitty people. But at the end of the movie you know that no matter how much you hated them, they didn’t deserve to die the way they did. With Pearl, it’s the exact opposite. You see that most of these supporting characters have good intentions but the second Pearl pulls out her axe/pitchfork you’re like girl noooooo stop 😂 Ah shit there she goes again lol

In my opinion, the saddest movie that Ari Aster has made is Munchausen. Most of his films involve deeply upsetting, disturbing, and devastating events that the characters within them have to live through, but the majority of the resultant character responses are contextually understandable or even expected. Munchausen, however, presents the viewer with a fairly common scenario and gives it an ending that hurts so strongly because it's plausible, but not at all proportional to the events that led up to it.
A loving, devoted Mother wants to be her son's mom for just a little bit longer. She tries a subtle tactic that, as far as she knows, won't cause anyone major harm. Now she's not a mom anymore, and her baby is dead and gone forever.
Nobody does "Family Horror" like this guy.

the first image in Midsommar
I like how it shows that Pelle knew all about Dani, that he monitored Christian and Dani before bringing them home.
I like that it demonstrates the control exerted over what Dani was allowed to see, and when.
People who thought the Harga were neat except for all the murder should look into the real life movements that they're based on from the 20th century. Truth is creepier than fiction.

not midsommar 😭😭😭 i remember watching the scene where they smashed the old guy’s head open and NONE of them blinked a fucking eye, and just went back to arguing about their thesis 😭😭 really got me thinking “damn… college is that bad huh 🤔😕”
At this point I was just like "Look they're obviously a cult and obviously fucking nuts at BEST but if I were in her position I'd be suckered in too"
I'm not saying the shitty bf deserved what happened at all, but I AM saying that being a more attentive and caring bf or having the cojones to directly say "Hey we should break up" sooner rather than later, as opposed to an extra 2 years of being a dismissive, mediocre, emotionally unsupportive partner (esp after YOUR GF'S PARENTS AND SISTER JUST FUCKING DIED), she might not have been so desperate for emotional support and validation and love bombing by the obvious white supremacist cult that she'd join it

Midsommar
Recently got around to watching Midsommar.
Very uniquely shot with lots of subtlety in the background on how disturbing things actually are in a small Swedish community during their midsummer celebrations. I enjoyed the character transformation Dani had amongst all her tragedies and personal struggles, especially her relationship with Christian. All in all the plot goes as you expect it and leads you there without qualms. The highs are the background details when you pick up on them.
Pretty enjoyable thriller, it's disturbing and unnerving.
