Welcome to the World my dearest son. Nadashi Siripatana, was born on Saturday February, 1st, 2020 Sydney, Australia.
Let’s throwback a bit before it all began. I remember by the time we got here in early of May 2019, we were getting settled, adjusting new daily routines and managing our lives in all perspectives. From getting a cozy home to choosing the good-enough private health insurance. After we got all these and felt quite settled with our (financial) situation, I realize I was late. Before we did the test, we were pretty okay and not panicked if we were to expect another child. We were mentally ready and I was physically ready to deal with pregnancy again. Except, $$$ that we were quite worried. But Alhumdullilah, it was manageable. Of course, unlike in Saudi, we were insured. But here, a day after we got insurance, we knew we were expecting. I called my insurance company and unfortunately, they only cover birth & pregnancy after 12-month of waiting period. In Saudi we had BUPA insurance, in here they also got BUPA but the coverage is not the same as in Saudi. In Saudi, I got there less than 3 months and pregnancy & birth was fully covered. (How we missed Middle East lol) After that, I couldn’t wait to find out. So off we went to Royal Hospital for Women (10 mins walk from our house) and set appointment to meet with the midwife in my 14th week. If you have a normal pregnancy here, you will not meet your midwife and your GP (from any clinic of your choice). The OB-GYN doctors are for high risk pregnancy only, it makes sense. My whole pregnancy check-up, I managed to meet GP twice and 5 times with my midwife.
After we been living here for almost a year, Australia work and life balance is at its best. Most people I know or talked to, works 3 days a week at office and the rest work from home or not working at all. This way, both parents got to spend time with kids not only on weekend but also on weekdays. No wonder when I first came here and brought Insha to the park, there are some dads who brought kids to playground and do all mom’s jobs. It’s a new normal for us. I was also surprised knowing that the nurses at the hospital works 3 days a week only and with total of 36 hours a week. Isn’t that great?
Nadashi at 20th week ultrasound
With this pregnancy, I was craving for all the sweets and chocolate mousse in the first half of my human-incubation period. Until I had my sugar tested and surprise surprise! I had pregger diabetes (GDM;Gestational Diabetes Mellitus) and I had to stop all sweets, no white rice nor white bread, control my diet and lots of walk and prenatal yoga. My midwife appointed me to meet with the group for women with GDM and really, Australia has a very impressive health care system. You will feel that they really care about you. They don’t want you risking by having a too-large baby and ended up with C-section. Ahh, I don’t want it too. So I was extra careful with my diet though it was such a torture to not eat what I craved for when pregnant.
12-hour before getting into labour!
Birth time! Insha was born right on her due date at 40 weeks, so I didn’t expect Nadashi to want to come out earlier than week 39th. A day before I was in labour, we went downtown Sydney and I was walking like I’m still far from baring child. But walking a lot also naturally induce the labour.
At 6am in the morning next day (Feb, 1st), I was lying in bed after a constant trips to the toilet. I felt my water broke and then contraction started literally 3-5 minutes apart (already? I thought it’d start at every 20 minutes or 10 at first but 3-5 mins right away). I kid myself that ‘Nuhh, not yet. I’m too sleepy to be in labour now” I was sure that it wasn’t Braxton hicks because it was repeated and also hurt like hell. I decided to wait to see another 30 minutes and it was the same. Oh man! he’s coming, he’s really coming!
Then I called “Delivery Suit” at hospital and explained my situation. They asked me to take hot shower and have breakfast and then come to the hospital. So I did, but I couldn’t eat because the contraction got stronger and more painful that it hurts like my pelvis being crushed by a tractor. I woke Adil and Insha, “We need to go to hospital now. Nadashi is coming” .. my last-day-only-child then said “It’s February already?” Haha, yep, she knew Nadashi will come in February. We walked to hospital. It was 8am. when we were walking I had like 5-6 contractions along the way. Ain’t I crazy.
Delivery Suit
Delivery Suit
At hospital (8am), Delivery Suit. One of the on-duty midwife (Kim) welcomed me right at the door. Everything felt so calm and quiet. Kim brought me straight to our delivery room. A spacious purple room, big windows that we could see UNSW, bathroom attached, birthing ball and fully quipped suit for delivery. I wasn’t ready to be honest with all the birth thing (again) but at the same time, I also couldn’t wait to meet my new lover.
I had Kim and Nicole assisted me at the first stage of getting into labour. That time I was wondering how far along was my dilation because I needed the most magical thing in my life, Epidural. I asked Kim that I need an epidural and she checked I was 3cm. dilated. With Insha, I had epi at 5cm. which is good timing not too early and not too late. But with the 2nd birth, I figured it dilated quicker so I decided to have it asap. Of course, there’s lot of consent to be made due to the possible (1 in 10) side effects. I consent, I consent, I consent. I couldn’t stand any more pain from this. It crushed me. I thought I could do better this time round, but no, it’s such a trauma to feel it again. I cried few times to be honest. How can women, other women, handle this pain without any drugs? You really are super super human.

You really are super super human.
Finally! Epidural time
At around 10am, the anesthesiologist came. She brought papers with her and explained everything to me (exactly like in Saudi) and I consent to every words said. Only this time round, the procedure is quite different. And I must say, it is better than the Saudi one. The one I had in Saudi was all at once injection. The needle was 4 inches long and really thick one stuck into my spine. My lower body felt all numb after that in less than 2 minutes and I couldn’t even lift my legs. It was amazing to not feel any labour pain at all but I think it’s better to at least feel something without any pain.
Here, they connected the epidural tube on the built-in wall and attached some needle to my back. I don’t remember where exactly but there was something like a locket hanging on my shoulder which passed epidural into me every 20-40 minutes. Every time it kicked in, it felt chilly a bit. At first, I felt no contraction pain but a bit of pressure at my bottom (bearable) and then the other was feeling a bit like small menstrual cramp. Anyway, epidural delayed delivery time. So from 10am, I was scrolling my phone, chatting, netflixing, and was napping till around 3pm. then Kim came in and said that looking from heart rate and other things (from machine) I was almost 10cm dilated. We should get ready to have little bub come out around 3.45pm or so. How exciting! Adil and Insha went out to the playground and came back once I told them we’re so ready for Nadashi!
“Okayy, you’re contracting now, PUSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” Kim asked me to have our first push. I did feel small cramp which without epidural, I would feeling being struck by a train and cut myself in 2, literally dying. We tried several times and I took so many deep breathes but Nadashi and my body did not cooperate well. We tried for like 20 mins or so and unsuccessful but baby was still happy not in distress. Then, we needed doctor to come and see the situation. He said that the baby’s head is down and he was curling to the side. His spine was on the side when it supposed to be against your tummy. So, he re-positioned the baby. (Imagine, putting all hand inside the move him from the inside. Oh lord. I felt nothing only pressure without pain while he changed his position. I was exhausted from all the pushing (many times) almost an hour later, doc said, okay, if it’s not coming out this time, we might need to cut lil’bit. I was thinking .. no way. okay, i’ll be pushing all my energy out now so I don’t need that cut just to let him out, nooooo!” This time, I did pushed really hard and I could feel the ball shape was coming out then deep breathe and that long push from the body and then deep breathe that last push till all body parts are out! Like I mentioned, my lower part wasn’t all numb it just no pain from contraction, so I could feel the baby human was coming out. It’s still a trauma. really big trauma. I can’t . I don’t want to do it anymore but maybe one more .. after I saw him for the first time and fell in love all over again. Alhumdullilah for everything. At 4.42pm. healthy baby boy, weight 3.2kg, 52cm in length. was finally out into the world.
In Australia, normally if you have normal child delivery and there’s no complication, you can leave hospital after 6 hours of delivery. I had to stay at least 48 hours because during pregnancy I had GDM so they had to monitor baby’s sugar level. Me and Nadashi spent one night in the hospital and I asked the nurse if we could go home next day because after 24 hours checking his blood pricking test, it was all fine and if I have to,I can prick him at home. I also told the nurse frankly that we’re not covered by insurance so within the deposit limit, I’d prefer to stay one night only. Then she said, the Pediatrician will come check Nadashi and she’ll see if we could go home. Alhumdulillah, all is well so we all went home on the 2nd evening.
Alhumdulillah, all is well and it’s time to go home!
Not only great service from Royal Hospital for Women, we also got NSW Baby Bundle full of baby essentials! (worth of $300); Baby playmat, first aid, room temperature indicator, baby Australian books, nappy cream, hand sanitizer, changing mat, baby swaddle, baby sleeping bag, baby milestones card, breast-pad, diaper bag.
Once we’re home, my personal midwife who I’ve visited during prenatal check-up come visit us at home. One day after deliver and the other 2 days during first week post-delivery. Overall, to check my health and baby’s. Checking baby’s weight, baby jaundice, checking on how he latch, checking my recovery etc.
After few days home, hospital also contacted us to have a heading test for Nadashi.
I’m not sure if Nadashi is a good baby or it’s just my biological clock that got used to the wake up in middle of night. But he could sleep longer than Insha as far as I remember. Insha was every 2 hours and Nadashi sleeps 3-5 hours. I even had few dreams before I woke up and realized that I’m a newborn mom, I have to wake him up to feed now. He’s just a deep sleeper!
Thanks for reading about my first week of life. I hope you all have a blessing days ahead.

meet GRACE WALKER.
full name: grace walker age: 22 years old gender: cis-female pronouns: she/her sexuality: bisexual occupation: midwife face claim: sydney sweeney
history –
growing up, grace didn’t have a very steady life. her father was a soldier and the family moved every few months to follow him. it was hard for grace to make friends, form any meaningful relations, because she always knew they wouldn’t hold for long anyway.
grace was a sunshine, smiling wherever she went and also putting a smile on everybody else’s faces. she liked to bake, liked to play with puppies, liked to babysit and dance. she was just a little girl portraying the perfect facade.
for grace, all of this was real. despite her lack in meaningful relationships, she always saw the best in people and had hopes that one day it would all be better. and it did. once she graduated from high school, she got into a midwife education program and finally managed to stay in one place for longer than just a few months.
in her new hometown, she met a boy who made her fall in love head over heels for the first time in her life. things were going good between them. he already had a child, a son he got when he was sixteen. the mother left him alone with the boy, and grace truly opened like a flower towards the sun in her newfound role as mother.
children had always been her favorite thing in the world, hence her choice in job and her happiness in her relationship. but from one day to the next, her boyfriend and his son were gone. grace never got a goodbye or explanation. she was left with a hole in her heart and a need to build her own family that just keeps growing day by day.
takes care of her best friend’s golden retriever because she is a photographer who is constantly on tour. stress-bakes all the damn time. eats cupcakes when she’s sad. watches superhero movies when she wants to cheer herself up.

2017 The Year of Great Change
Where to start??
2017 our family of 5, became a family of 8!
The beginning of the changes as always came over time and subtly.
It was early 2013 and Nicole had just returned from living in Exmouth. On her trip down, she was involved in a car accident, rolling her vehicle, lucky to escape with only minor bumps and bruises.
She was only back a month, when she met a cheeky Irishman, by the name of Danny. It wasn’t long before they were spending most of their time together. He definitely was a romantic soul, slow dancing with her down on the Freo foreshore.
Nicole had applied for a job working on a luxury yacht, which offered cruises from Broome around to the horizontal falls and the top end.
She was successful in getting the job and as it was an opportunity not to be missed, she accepted.
Danny not wanting to let go of what he had, quickly decided to follow her up to Broome. They were inseparable after that.
In 2010 after Beck finished school, she began a journey with YWAM, which would last well into 2012. This journey took her to many countries around the world, including Mexico, India, Mozambique and Kenya.
While on this journey, Beck developed a real deep love for God, the lost and a desire to teach. It was during this time she developed a passion to become a midwife.
After settling back into life in Busselton, Beck was successful in her application to study midwifery at Curtin Uni. She started her degree in 2014.
Our youngest daughter Hannah finished school in 2012, so a major part of her teenage years, her 2 siblings were living away from home. In 2010, Hannah went on a school trip over to Sydney. It was on this school trip, that a boy in her class plucked up the courage to ask her if they could date.
From those early days when they were probably not much more than close friends, their relationship grew into a very strong bond.
So now it is November 2015 and we are busily planning Hannah’s 21st party, which was going to be a twilight cruise on Geographe bay. Hannah and I wanted to checkout a boat, to see if it would be suitable and we asked Nic to come along as she had spent a lot of time on boats. We were waiting for Nic and Danny to arrive, when we saw them approaching with big smiles on their faces. We quickly learned that Danny had asked Nicole to marry him that day 💍.
Hannah was a bit put out, as she was secretly hoping James would ask her first, but we were all delighted and the date of 23rd Feb 2017 was decided on (this was the anniversary of the day, they started dating, and also my parents wedding anniversary.)
In July 2016, Hannah’s good friend from school, Rachel was getting married in England. Hannah was honoured to be one of her bridesmaids, so James and her made plans to fly to England and also have a short stopover at a couple of places in Europe.
While in Venice riding on a gondola, James proposed and of course Hannah accepted 💍
So now we have 2 daughters engaged. Hannah worked in a school, so they were tied to the school holidays, in making their decision for a date. After much discussion the 8th April 2017 was decided upon. Now we have 2 weddings in 6 weeks 😳👰👰
Meanwhile, Beck is in full swing of her midwife course, which she completes at the end of 2016. Next step is securing a graduate program, so she can at last be utilising her skills. Bek is offered a position at Fiona Stanley Hospital, and she is due to start work the week of Nicole’s wedding 🎩.
To make February just a little more busy, Beck gets notification that her graduation ceremony is also going to be just before Nic’s wedding.
Tumblr media
We were proud of Beck completing her studies and starting work in a field she is very passionate about.
Nic and Danny’s day was beautiful, ceremony was at Castle Rock, Dunsborough and reception at the yacht club. Hannah and Beck were part of the bridal party and everyone enjoyed the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had a week relaxing, before we got stuck into organising Hannah’s wedding.
Hannah and James had the ceremony and lunch picnic at James uncles farm. It was very lovely and relaxing. In the evening they held an intimate dinner by candlelight in the garden of James parents house with close family and the bridal party.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only blemish on the day, was I woke with a massive migraine and had to be heavily sedated so I could attend the day. Needless to say it was pretty much a blur, but everyone said the day was a great success.
It was only a few weeks later, that Nic and Danny came around with this photo
Tumblr media
Another surprise for 2017, Nic and Danny would become parents in November 2017.
On November 23rd after a very long labour, Jasper David Brazil became the newest addition to our family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has been a great joy to watch him grow and learn, he has the best smile and is quite cheeky. He has been crawling for about a month and a half, and is desperately trying to stand whenever he can. Jasper is now 8months.
It was about a month before Jasper was born that we toyed with the idea of downsizing. We got a real estate friend come and have a look at our family home and get an idea of what it might be worth.
We were still deciding what to do, when he said he had someone who might be interested. Anyway they came and within a matter of days, the prospective buyers gave us an offer.
There was a bit of tooing and froing, and sometime passed, and our home was sold. Then we had the daunting task of finding another home. This was quite a hard task and after looking at many homes, we bought a new place, significantly reducing our debts 😊
We moved out of our family home of 20 Years mid February, it was very sad for our whole family, but we are slowly making new memories in our new home.

Nic, Danny & Jasper have started their own adventure now, traveling around Australia, at present in Broome. Bek is about to go to the US for a holiday and when she gets back is hoping to get some work in either Broome or Darwin. Warren is talking about applying for a camp manager position in Albany.
One thing you can be sure of, life is an adventure and change is constant. Sometimes it comes all at once, other times it is so slow and gradual that you don’t even realise that’s happening. I am looking forward to the next few years, to see where they take us, until then.
Ciao Sue 😘

People Who Got Matching Tattoos Tell Us How It Worked Out For Them
Tumblr media
Madonna and son David with their new wrist tattoos.
Tattoos, like taxes, are for life. Yes you can get them removed and reinked, but memories of the once assured certainty will always remain.
But Madonna has no qualms in that department, she’s just been identically tatted with her son. The iconic singer showed off the art on Instagram – a Tree of Life design – on her inner wrist, in the same place as son David’s.
And the whole mum-son act has inspired many others to share their stories of matching ink with their loved ones, friends and err, colleagues (yes, really).
For most, the tats remain a happy memory, while for others, not so much.
Jacqueline, 46, women’s wellbeing author and coach, Nottingham
Tumblr media
How cute
“My new husband’s name is Bruce Kent (Batman vs Superman) and when we swiped each other on Tinder he was looking for his Wonderwoman (which was my nickname by friends at the time). We got these in November 2018, 16 months after we met.”
Lara, 40, charity sector, London
Tumblr media
Friendship goals
“Me and a friend have ‘winkles’ which is the shortened name of the village we grew up in. They’re not identical but are the same sort of shell. I also have a ‘thighnapple’ (not identical) with another friend.”
Laura, 29, Journalist, London
“My best friend and I got matching tattoos of St Andrews (where we met) on the 10th anniversary of the day we met.”
Tumblr media
A sweet back story
Calum, 28, PR, London
“I matched with my best friend Cameron, he lives in Sydney, we both still have it. Mine is on my forearm and his is on his ribs. We got it both to commemorate the passing of Scott Hutchinson from Frightened Rabbit (rock band), sadly lost to suicide. The symbol has kind of become a bit of a pro- mental health sign.”
Tumblr media
A class tribute
Peter, 28, journalist and filmmaker, Ireland
“My girlfriend and I got a little wave tattoo on our ribs after not even a year together. Now approaching three years together and we still love it. For us it represents how much happier we are when we are near the sea.”
Tumblr media
Adorable
And lastly, when tattoos go wrong...
Lauren, 23, videographer, Shropshire
Tumblr media
It looks good at least
“I used to work at a smoothie bar when I was in college, I started there when I was 16. I was really close with two of the girls I worked with. And when I was old enough to get tattoos, we all made the decision to get a matching tattoo of a pineapple.
“Every one of my tattoos either represents an emotional message for me or like a time in my life that is really quite significant and that was the first job that I was truly happy in. It was a really happy time in my life. And so we just decided to get a matching pineapple tattoo.
Tumblr media
The tattoo now
“The girls then just decided that I didn’t really have a place in their lives and they stopped replying to my messages. It was maybe an age thing ,as they were older. And the friendship fizzled out, which was really sad.
“And the complicated thing about the tattoo is that I don’t necessarily regret the meaning behind it because I still hold that job quite close to my heart, the thing I regret is how big it is.
“Because I was so young when we were getting it, I was so excited. If it was a lot smaller than it is I probably wouldn’t be thinking about getting laser or  covering it up but because it takes up quite a significant portion of my lower leg. It just kind of makes me sad to look at.”
So, for anyone considering it, think before you ink.

New top story from Time: How Florence Nightingale Paved the Way for the Heroic Work of Nurses Today
When Greta Westwood was 4 years old, she read a children’s book about Victorian nurse Florence Nightingale. Decades later, she still remembers being transfixed by the enduring image of the “Lady with the Lamp.” Westwood herself would go on to a distinguished nursing career of her own, starting out as a student orthopedic nurse in 1978. “From day one of putting the uniform on, I’ve never looked back,” she recalls.
Although she left Britain’s National Health Service in 2017 after nearly 40 years, Westwood has recently returned to her local hospital in Portsmouth, in the south of England, to help with the U.K.’s public health efforts in the coronavirus crisis. Westwood, who spoke to TIME on a busy Monday morning from the hospital, has been running psychological support sessions for nurses and midwives assisting patients with COVID-19 for the past six weeks.
That early image of Florence Nightingale, tending to wounded soldiers in the darkness with her lamp, has endured for so many nurses, for so many years, and takes on renewed significance as May 12 marks the 200th anniversary of Nightingale’s birth. It also marks International Nurses’ Day, commemorated in Nightingale’s honor. With nurses around the world on the front lines of a global pandemic, it’s a poignant time to reflect on how Nightingale’s legacy laid the groundwork for their heroic work in hospitals today. “It’s the trailblazing element I like about her,” says Westwood, who is also the CEO of the Florence Nightingale Foundation. “She never took no for an answer—anything was possible.”
Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, to a wealthy aristocratic family in Italy, and grew up in England. As a teenager, she believed that she had heard a call from God encouraging her to help the sick and poor and felt a strong desire to become a nurse—although the profession was not seen as a respectable job at the time. Victorian social conventions also meant that women were generally expected to stay at home and run household affairs, not pursue careers; Nightingale turned down multiple marriage proposals because she felt it would interfere with her duty of caring for others. Her ambitions were particularly controversial given her upper-class background. But despite her family’s disapproval, she educated herself in arts and science and eventually gained some nursing experience at a Lutheran-run institution for the poor in Germany.
In March 1854, Britain entered the Crimean War, fighting in an alliance against Russia. Newspaper reports detailed the devastating state of hospitals that cared for the wounded, and, in the face of public outcry at home, War Minister Sidney Herbert appointed Nightingale to lead a contingent of 38 volunteer nurses to a military hospital in Scutari, in modern-day Turkey, in the November of that year, to help wounded soldiers returning from the front lines.
Nightingale’s team was immediately confronted by nightmarish conditions. More soldiers were dying of diseases such as typhus, typhoid, cholera and dysentery than from battle wounds, and the hospital wards were overcrowded with rat and lice infestations.
“What greeted her there must have been horrendous in terms of the squalor,” says David Green, director of the Florence Nightingale Museum in London. “But she stayed until the end, and made sure she looked after the common soldier, not just the officer.”
Nightingale’s compassion set her apart from others, says Green, and she gained her famous moniker for checking in on her patients by lamplight, often writing letters to loved ones at home on their behalf. At that time, the army didn’t always inform families when soldiers were killed, but Nightingale felt a duty to do so. That sense of duty to patient and family has been on full display during the COVID-19 crisis, as nurses champion the need to be with patients until the very end, and have campaigned for iPads so relatives can communicate with loved ones. “That is so Nightingale, and that compassion really carries home,” says Green.

Nightingale’s time at Scutari prompted several innovations that she would develop in the later years of her life. Although the male doctors at the institution saw Nightingale’s suggestions as criticisms, she remained steadfast, taking several measures to improve sanitation and hygiene at the hospital, including washing the linens and towels, purchasing necessary kitchen supplies, and emphasizing hand-washing with soap and water, which was not widely practiced at the time. However, through 1855, the mortality rate at the hospital continued to rise, as Nightingale mistakenly believed that nutrition and supply problems were the main cause of the issue, rather than the sanitation problem. A Sanitary Commission found that the hospital was built on a sewer, meaning that the water supply was contaminated and helping to increase the spread of disease.
Nightingale returned to Britain in 1856 having learned from the experience. In the years that followed, she championed sanitary health—and cemented her status as a national hero.
For the next 50 years of her life, she prioritized the establishment of nursing as a respected profession. Her 1859 book Notes on Nursing is still regarded today as a pioneering text, was written in simple language intended for women nursing in the home to understand. One of her first tasks after returning from the war was to set up a training school for nurses in 1860, the first to exist in the world, which still runs today. “If you speak to any nurse about nursing, everybody comes to work to do their best for their patient. Through all those years even when she came back from Crimea, that was her purpose in life,” says Westwood.
Despite battling depression and being intermittently bedridden from 1857, Nightingale wrote thousands of letters campaigning for public health and workhouse reform, and used her influence to network with Queen Victoria and prominent politicians. It was also from her experience in Crimea that she learned about efficient hospital planning and design. In correspondence with other hospitals around the world, from Sydney to New York City, she shared her knowledge and the resources of the “Nightingale Nurses” that had been trained through her school.
Significantly, Nightingale backed up her campaigns with evidence, statistics and data visualizations that were easy to understand, using diagrams to show the effects of infection and mortality rates in the Crimean War. “She was the pioneer of the first pie chart,” says Westwood, comparing the public’s need for data during Nightingale’s time and our own. “When the Prime Minister or Chief Medical Officer do their briefings on the coronavirus today, we now see that data published as infographics. Nightingale got it that people wouldn’t understand the data unless she made it explicit and unquestionable.”

Tolga Akmen—AFP via Getty ImagesMedical staff and workers take part in a national “clap for carers” to show thanks for the work of Britain’s NHS (National Health Service) workers and other frontline medical staff around the country as they battle with the novel coronavirus pandemic, outside of the ExCeL London exhibition centre, which has been transformed into the “NHS Nightingale” field hospital in London on April 30, 2020.
While her legacy has endured two centuries later, Nightingale’s bicentennial comes at a crucial time for nurses on the front lines, and a moment of financial challenge for the museum dedicated to her memory, due to its current closure. “It’s ironic that many of the field hospitals [in the U.K.] have taken her name,” says Green of the Florence Nightingale Museum, which houses almost 3,000 artifacts dedicated to her legacy, “but the thing that is always around to remind everyone of her might not be.”
For the Florence Nightingale Foundation, which was set up in 1934 to remember her legacy and actively supports nurses and midwifes through scholarship programs, their usual commemoration of Nightingale’s birthday is adapting to the current lockdown situation. Supported by The Crown actor Helena Bonham Carter, whose great-great-grandmother Joanna was Nightingale’s aunt, the Foundation is launching the Florence Nightingale White Rose Appeal, through which people worldwide can buy an e-white rose to help support nurses currently working on the front lines. Each rose bought will form part of an actual floral display at London’s Westminster Abbey once lockdown ends, to celebrate the contribution of nurses and midwives everywhere.
It’s quite a different bicentenary compared to what Westwood had envisaged, but the woman at its heart would not have shied away from the difficulty.
“Celebrations is a weird word at this time, because it is tinged with sadness—so many nurses have died, and we mustn’t forget that,” Westwood says. “But Florence would be so proud of what nurses have managed to achieve during this pandemic.”

QEII's Mary Kirk a passionate advocate for families
Mary Kirk leaves the Queen Elizabeth II Family Centre, mostly likely in November, after more than two decades of service, passionate that it continues to prioritise the wellbeing of mothers, babies and families. "What I like about this place is that it focuses on what it is families need," she said. "That is something that has not only inspired me, but kept me here." Both the executive director and director of nursing and midwifery at the QEII in Curtin since 1997, Ms Kirk has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. The award recognises her "significant service to midwifery and nursing, and to professional standards". The no-nonsense Ms Kirk said it was only at the last minute she decided to accept the honour, as much for others as herself. "I feel humbled and proud and realise you don't do any of this in isolation," she said. "The bottom line is you're doing this because you've been enabled. And I've had the luxury of working for the most amazing organisation for the last 20 years, the Canberra Mothercraft Society." MORE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY HONOURS NEWS QEII, a salve and salvation for mothers and their babies as a live-in support centre, has been run by the Canberra Mothercraft Society for 56 years but that tenure ends on June 30. An alternative provider will be put in place by the ACT Government. Ms Kirk, 62,intends to leave QEII, but not retire, after the society's AGM in November. She hopes to move into consultancy, continuing to agitate for enough funding and support structures so that the same midwife can be with a woman throughout the pregnancy and birth. She also wants pregnancy and birth to not be treated as a medical issue, the level of medical intervention be reconsidered and for women to get at least six weeks' post-birth rest with their baby. Ms Kirk says her beliefs were formed when she was nursing on the Cocos Islands as a 25-year-old. "It's where I grew to love midwifery with a passion," she said. "It was an environment where I could use all of my skills as a midwife and work with a woman from beginning to end. It was true continuity of care." Ms Kirk, who grew up in Cabramatta in the western suburbs of Sydney, did her nursing at the Woden Valley Hospital and her midwifery in Manly. Her family moved to Canberra in her final year of primary school and she attended the Catholic Girls High in Braddon. She hoped the new operator of QEII continued to put the needs of women front and centre because a woman's strength was her family's strength. "They walk in our door and think they've failed. They haven't failed. They've done a sterling job," Ms Kirk said.
