♡ DILFS DILFS DILFS: soft mornings w/ Kaido & gn!reader
a/n: for @bookandyarndragon & @tardiiart and also emotionally suportive DILF anon if you see this ♡ look at me, returning to my favorite event after almost two months of absence! after writing a little too much smut lately i craved to cleanse my palette with some fluff and then the open Kaido requests caught my eye... the original prompts were a bit too long to put in the header, so here they are: "being carried and tucked into bed, after having fallen asleep on the couch waiting for your partner to come home" (interpreted this one a bit differently) as well as "climbing back into bed, onto your partner’s body to wake them up"
word count: 916
Tumblr media
The last thing you remember is a kaleidoscope of cheerful voices and the sound of sake cups clinking, the warm light of lanterns dancing before your eyes and a calloused hand cradling you as you scooted closer to your lover, your head resting against his big thigh before your eyes fell shut and you dozed off while the banquet around you was still ongoing. The Beast Pirates’ banquets were infamous and untamed, but on some nights even a brave little warrior like you couldn’t withstand them till the very end.
You blink slowly, eyes adjusting to the dim light in the bedroom. While you certainly don’t remember how you got there, the answer was lying right next to you, sleeping peacefully on his back with one hand resting on his stomach, the other arm stretched out over to your side as if he was reaching for you even in his dreams. It wasn’t the first time that Kaido carried you to bed after you fell asleep at the banquet, waiting patiently for him to live through his various stages of drunkenness before he got tired and wanted to retreat to his chambers. The fact that you don’t even wake up when he does this shows just how safe you feel in his presence. He might be a beast, but who said beasts can’t have a gentle side to them?
Despite him being the heaviest sleeper you know, you’re careful not to wake him when you throw your blanket back and tiptop out of bed to the bathroom. With some splashed water in your face and brushed teeth you feel a lot more awake already. Those banquets sure were fun, but what you really crave is some alone time with your dragon husband, feeling his skin on yours and his kisses everywhere, dark brown eyes resting on you only while his hands wander all over your body, admiring every inch of it. A warm bath would be nice…
You crawl back into bed and on top of him, his massive chest heaving slowly with every breath he takes. In comparison to him you are so small, making you an uneven pair but height never stood in the way of your undying love. Kaido was impressed by your strength and perseverance and the way you shamelessly flirted with him even though he was your boss; all while you were enamored by the roughness around his edges and the way he growled out your name, a little softer every time until he was almost purring, his forehead resting against yours before you leaned in for your first kiss.
Years later and you are still head over heels in love with him, more and more with every day passing by. With your heart taking leaps in your chest you gaze down at him, admiring every scar and every wrinkle, his skin telling a story of its own. You plaster a few soft kisses on his bare chest, feeling his heartbeat under your fingertips; then you make your way up to the side of his neck, kissing him some more as you mumble out his name. He responds with a few groans, balancing on the hazy line between sleep and awake. You wrap a few strands of his spilled out hair around your fingers, twirling it as you kiss his jaw, just above his beard.
“Mhm… g'morning little one…”
A big hand cradles you, fingers rubbing over your back in uncoordinated sleepy movements as he pulls you closer. You beam at him, tracing every bit of his rough skin with lots of kisses in between, smiling against his lips when he turns his head to the side and humming softly. His morning voice is low and raspy, a contrast to the sweet nothings he mumbles against your lips, still sleepdrunk but also craving your love and your affection.
Nestled against his face you let out a hearty sigh, a content smile on your lips. Nothing like shared morning bliss, a quiet time reserved just for the two of you; where words and touch felt like dancing on clouds and your beloved beast melted under your touch, as soft as water.
“Sorry for waking you up, it’s just that I missed you so much…”, you whisper and place a gentle kiss on Kaido’s lips, his hand lingering on the back of your head to prevent you from pulling away too soon. His beard tickles your face but you don’t mind, in this moment you can only feel the love radiating in the air between you, a softness that will never not feel like magic.
“‘s fine…”, Kaido murmurs and wraps his arms around you tightly, still on the edge of falling asleep again. You laugh softly and continue your kissing spree all over his face, leaving not a single inch of it unkissed as you enjoy his warm embrace. Only when you mention the bathtub and how nice it would be to dip into warm water together, how you could wash his back and his hair for him, Kaido seems to wake up, blinking at you slowly. A few heartbeats later he rises with a low hum, startling you for a second but his grip around you is so tight, by no means he would just let you fall; instead he stomps to the bathroom with you, sitting you down at the edge of the bathtub and returning all those kisses until the water is ready for you both to sink in…

Figuring Out What RV Bus Kian Would've Lived in in Galloway
okay so first of all: kian canonically lived in an RV bus when he was growing up in Galloway and i have a recently discovered special interest in RVs and decided to figure out what this thing would look like. yippee ^_^
I have 3 main options (all Flxible -> more details on that later) the 1949 (originally a bus converted into a motorhome later on -> also a little earlier than timeline suggests) the 1955 (later than i'd like but this was the same year they started making RV buses (apparently)) and the 1956 (same as 1955 just throwing it in for some floor plan variety)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(1949 Flxible Clipper: click here for more pictures)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(1955 Flxible VL100 bus: click here for more pictures)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(1956 Flxible "Vistaliner": click here for more pictures)
i was trying to aim for around 1951 but around this time anyway a lot of RVs were custom built so wrt floor plan you can kinda just mix it up. i imagine kian's bedroom would've been one of the couches with a curtain around it for privacy shrug. kian's parents would've had the bed(/beds in some models although i imagine it'd be one bed in theirs) up the back
(just giving you the pictures straight up -> keep reading for background info + how I came to this conclusion)
(spent a lot of time on this so if you think it's interesting -> reblogs appreciated!)
establishing our timeline: kian was born in 1951 (33yrs old in 1984 -> the bitb was set) LETS SAY: if his parents were around 20 when he was born then they would've been born 1931. if they moved out together at 18, they would've been looking for RVs around 1949
now around this time due to roads not being great at supporting heavier vehicles (and people who weren't super super rich wanting a car as well as an RV) most people were after RV trailers instead of RV buses -> i believe that kian's parents originally had a car + trailer set up (examples later on) and then sometime around kian was born (1951) they sold their car + trailer to get an RV bus so they'd have enough room to raise a kid (<- this is all headcanon based on the logistics of RV history)
they definitely did not ever own a house because RVs were generally mostly bought by rich ppl (especially if they were RV buses) or poor ppl who bought one instead of a house (common during the depression -> prob where they got the idea). i imagine they originally continued travelling for a bit after kian was born/with the new RV and then settled down in galloway so he could make friends etc etc
it's difficult to search up the original prices for these things so i'm not sure what the comparison on prices between custom RV bus and House in Galloway would've been. which is why i'm saying they kept travelling for a bit just to like.. be on the safe side rather than assume they got an RV bus because it was cheaper than a house
the thing that's made this kind of difficult is RV buses didn't reallyyy exist around early 1950s -> they came into popularity around late 50s. however, there were a lot of people who would custom order/custom build RVs based off of bus/truck chassis. so took me a bit but i narrowed us down to the brand Flxible (info + 1949 bus pictures) (more info) (more info 2 -> custom coach corporation)
Flxible is still a little late for my personal understanding (1955 versus 1950/51) buuut it was a popular bus brand even before selling RVs so it's likely Kian's parents could've used a Flxible bus chassis/shell and had a motorhome custom built onto it (like the 1949 model above for eg). this also means they might not have a brand new bus so here's a list of flxible buses over time so you can pick one out urself if you really want to. starliners are probably too old though
Special Bit Of Info: if you headcanon one of kian's parents to be a mechanic (i guess.. his dad in this kinda era) that makes this whole thing much more simpler bc he could've just built one himself. actually admittedly i'm not sure whether that would've been more/less/equally expensive as custom ordering one.. but whatever
Likely Kian's Parents' RV Trailer + Car Set Up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i dearly wish i could get better quality informative pics than this/any sort of date on them.. $375 back then (1949..?) is roughly $4,595 according to some converter thing i looked up. i didn't look Too much into these because they weren't as important as the galloway RV bus but Trotwood was active in the late 1940s (<- info + source of pictures)
the 1949 Thomson Avon is another potential trailer?
however if you'd like to look at other 1940s RV trailers go here. as i said, i haven't looked through them all. please be aware that not every RV on here has pictures From the 1940s as they often span a couple of decades
What I Imagine Kian's Parents' RV Trailer + Car Set Up To Be In My Heart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a chinook on a truck chassis (<- info + source of pictures)
i genuinely can't read this</3 so the exact layout is a little confusing to me but it seems to have the basics. but literally when i was thinking "oh they'd have had a trailer + car set up first" this rough design was what my brain gave me before i even started looking. unfortunately -> way too late for them. the earliest picture with this model that i can find is 1963 (above link)
anyway! this was a lot of fun :] i'm aware not many people might be interested enough to read through the whole thing but if you did -> thank you! i hope you enjoyed!
extra little fact: they stopped the production of RVs commercially during WWII and afterwards there was a bit of an RV boom -> kian's parents were too young to be in the war but this boom likely was what inspired them to go for an RV themselves

might as well throw in some pingxie thoughts while i’m at it
i have. many things to say about pingxie. but on the subject of reducing relationships to one dimensional tropes specifically, it does them just as much of a disservice.
my favorite variation of pingxie is in the books (very shocking i know, although that’s technically the original them and not a variation), and by comparison to what’s shown in the dramas (which are fun and self-indulgent don’t get me wrong), the books are the slowest of slow burns. never forget we see everything in them from wu xie’s pov exclusively (at least the main entries), so we can only infer xiaoge’s own growth and development from what wu xie sees of it, but it very much exists.
wu xie has a complicated opinion of xiaoge in the earlier books, mostly because he doesn’t quite know what to make of this man who looks younger than he is and completely blows him off on their first meeting (blows everyone off in fact) much to his displeasure, which leads to the initially derogatory nickname ‘menyouping’, and yet is also vastly competent and knowledgeable. he’s cold and indifferent, yet wu xie feels safe around him and trusts him more than he likely should from the get go, mostly because wu xie’s good at reading people’s intentions and character on an instinctive level he doesn’t always manage to rationalize early on. he’s fascinated and would like to know him better, but also finds him deeply unfathomable, even incomprehensible.
and then you have xiaoge, who it merits saying, is repeatedly described as largely indifferent to most things (and he genuinely is), doing what he deems necessary but otherwise not bothering to involve himself with other people or social niceties. this is a man who spends his time off to the side sleeping or contemplating the sky, and yet in the space of four books he goes from not giving two shts about wu xie (or more than he would the average person) to voluntarily interacting with him, siding with him in quiet ways, helping him through unspoken little acts all the way up until a turning point wherein he first tries to keep his distance from wu xie en route to tamutuo in an effort to keep him from getting further involved than he already is in dangerous things he has no concept of, except by then he’s shown enough uncharacteristic interest in wu xie that wu xie notices he's being cold and distant. this all culminates in the infamous moment where xiaoge eventually lets himself act on thoughts he’s likely never fully analyzed himself, let alone shared with another person, leading to the “if i disappeared no one would notice” moment.
and from there all the way until post ten years later and into things like yucun biji, the reality is that pingxie were never the serious immortal and the dorky clumsy mortal boy he adopts, nor are they the vulnerable strong one and the eventual protector, or any other trope variation really. pingxie are two people who at the start stand on opposite sides of a line neither of them were ever meant to cross, and to all intents and purposes should never have met for how very different the worlds they come from are. they’re people that circumstance threw together who chose to stay together, and keep choosing each other. they don’t need each other to exist, and could have gone their separate ways had they wanted to, but the importance of their relationship lies in that they stay together by active choice, and that in doing so, they meet in the middle.
wu xie matures and comes to understand a number of things through hardship while xiaoge is behind the gate that untether him just enough from the world that xiaoge isn’t quite so unfathomable anymore, while xiaoge comes down from his imposed pedestal just enough that he tethers himself to wu xie (and pangzi) and learns to live rather than exist
neither of them became a different person for the other, and the core of their relationship (and the beauty of it) is in the harmony and understanding they eventually achieve. reducing all of that to archetypes is honestly a little tragic

Hey, wanted to ask about what modernization is extended to. Larger pieces such as armored cars and tanks is obvious, but does infantry gain from it? Something along the lines of shock infantry like the Germans developed or flamethrowers and night fighting? Or maybe motorization with trucks?
Hi, and thanks for the ask!
Short answer: yes, infantry will gain from it, but only in the form of better rifles.
Long answer:
It's not currently planned to be that extensive. Motorized infantry would also not really fit the setting from a historical and logistical viewpoint.
First off, Armored Cars are available regardless of your modernization choices, they are just the second type of recon (the other is cavalry), with both having different pros and cons.
The "modernization route" I mentioned refers to a conflict that will eventually arise between your four original companions, with a "tank faction" and a "cavalry faction" arguing for different approaches.
It's modeled after a real-life conflict in the RKKA*'s top officer cadre - a group of commanders led by Tukhachevsky envisioned a large-scale reform establishing large tank formations, while another group consisting of commanders such as Budyonny and Voroshilov argued that a) mass production of tanks doesn't make sense in a position where most of them would become obsolete within a short time and b) the poor infrastructure would make supplying them a nightmare.
It was an uphill battle for the "tank faction" from the beginning, since most members of the "cavalry faction" were personal friends of Stalin since the Battle for Tsaritsyn, but they were initially allowed to conduct large-scale trials for how they envisioned a modern army to be... until Tukhachevsky very aggressively pushed for his proposal to modernize and massively expand all Soviet forces at once (for example, he wanted to produce 50,000 to 100,000 tanks just within the year 1928 (in comparison, Germany had about 3000 tanks in 1939, which was then the largest tank force in the world)). He was consequently accused of sabotage, lost his position, was investigated, and in the end he was proclaimed a conman and German agent who achieved his rank by throwing around complicated words he made up and getting recommendations by other agents of the German intelligence service. He and most of the "tank faction" were executed, and that was that.
In my story, Mikhail/Marina, supported by Leon/Leah, will form the "tank faction". If you go with them, you will be able to use tanks (and acquire them from foreign nations), as well as get more powerful, modern rifles, and economic help. However, the more tanks and money you requisit from other countries, the more their influence on you will grow, and if you're too careless, you might end up a mere puppet.
Semyon/Selena, supported by Yakov/Liliya, will argue against them, saying that the domestic inadequacy of industry, which means you can't produce your own tanks and will have to import them from abroad, will lead to effectively selling out the country - plus, tanks are difficult to supply in most areas of Nevetskiya due to poor infrastructure, which limits their effectiveness. So, they want you to completely give up on tanks and instead focus on establishing large cavalry formations. If you go with them, you will unlock the Tachanka, a horse-drawn machine-gun cart that will immensely boost your Cavalry formations' firepower.
The faction you didn't side with will have to be dealt with in one way or another - can you afford killing off a large portion of your officer corps, including two of your closest confidantes, or will you risk them betraying you later?

original:
the wall, if you flee, your family will no longer be cared for.” His words were like a stone to the head. If I escaped, if I even tried to run, I might very well doom my family. And even if I dared risk it … even if I succeeded in reaching them, where would I take them? I couldn’t stow my sisters away on a ship—and once we arrived somewhere else, somewhere safe, we’d have nowhere to live. But for him to hold my family’s well-being against me, to throw away their survival if I stepped out of line… I opened my mouth, but his snarl rattled the glasses. “Is that not a fair bargain? And if you flee, then you might not be so lucky with whoever comes to retrieve you next.” His claws slipped back under his knuckles. “The food is not enchanted, or drugged, and it will be your own damn fault if you faint. So you’re going to sit at this table and eat, Feyre. And Lucien will do his best to be polite.” He threw a pointed look in his direction. Lucien shrugged. The invisible bonds loosened, and I winced as I whacked my hands on the underside of the table. The bonds on my legs and middle remained intact. One glance at Tamlin’s smoldering green eyes told me what I wanted to know: his guest or not, I wasn’t going to get up from this table until I’d eaten something. I’d think about the sudden change in my plans to escape later. Now…for now I eyed the silver fork and carefully picked it up. They still watched me—watched my every move, the flare of my nostrils as I sniffed the food on my plate. No
revised:
Tamlin pushed a hand through his golden hair. “I’m only going to say this once. If you cross the wall, my side of the bargain is over. I will no longer take care of your family. If you flee, and someone less kind than me retrieves you, it will be your fault that they suffer. Do you understand?” I fought to nod against the invisible restraints. Pressure held tight against my throat. He repeated, “Do you understand?” I swallowed thickly. “I understand.” “Good. Now, you’re going to eat, and we’re all going to be polite. Right, Lucien?” Lucien shrugged but said nothing. The bonds on my arms loosened, and my hands smacked the underside of the table. The bindings on my legs and torso didn’t let go. One glance at Tamlin told me, guest or not, I wasn’t going to get up until I’d eaten. Stabbing a piece of chicken, I took a bite. It was an effort not to grunt. The meat was tender and savory, salty skin crackling deliciously on my tongue. I ripped off another piece. I’d never had food like this before. I was shoving in mouthfuls of creamy potatoes before I’d even swallowed. A plum so juicy it dribbled down my chin. The wine was sharp and effervescent, bubbles tickling my nose.

________________________________________
“What is the meaning of this?”
She had been expecting Paz to have come to her earlier, seeking answers for what had just transpired . It could be considered nothing short of a blessing from her ancestors that she had been allowed the time she was, for if he had arrived not five minutes earlier she surely would have not been able to answer him. Even now she found it hard to find her voice, swallowing thickly as she tried to dispel the invisible grip that held her. It was as if the dust from the rubble had infiltrated the filter of her helmet, invading her senses and clogging every sense with a layer of dust.
“The empire sent TIE bombers.” The vecoder of her helmet masked the cracking of her voice from the large warrior in front of her, lest she appear anything but unyielding even in such a moment. It did nothing to dampen the way it reverberated within however, and the echo fact was like a hit to the chest plate all over again.
“Were there any other survivors.”
A light shake of her head gave him his answer. Even if they were strangers to her, the carnage she had witnessed would have been a shock to anyone.
None had been spared from the Empire’s wrath. Not a single structure nor person was left standing, and at places there were little more than scorch marks burned into the ground, the only testament of what was once there. The burns matched those marring the flesh of the scattered bodies, which there was no shortage of. Most were too burned and damaged to tell age or gender and she had no doubts that there were more victims, either buried or bodies completely destroyed in the initial blast and still burning flames.
“How did they make it?” He questioned further, and unsurprisingly.
“Their house was located further outside the village. It received the least of the blast, though there is still no home to return to.”
Yet again she was thankful for your reclusive behavior. It was only thanks to your distance, and the armor she found you buried in, did you survive, though you weren't without injury.
As soon as she received your transmission she had turned back mid flight, making it there in record time. Having never used the transmitter before, the fact that you did so now expelled any worry she might have had over your previous encounter.
When she arrived to find what had happened, she had immediately started digging. Using every tool and ounce of strength at her disposal to move the rubble, looking for at least a body to confirm her fears.
At long last she had found you, body bloodied and arm twisted at an unnatural angle. It was a shock to her system, heart nearly stopping as she took in your still form, thinking you were surely dead. Gloved hands ghosted over your exposed skin and still attached armor, which itself was badly damaged. As well made as it was by your own hand and her careful guidance it still had trouble holding up to the immense weight and damage it took. The metal surface was marred with countless scratches and dents, even completely caved in at places. There wasn’t a single doubt in her mind that you were already gone. There was no telling how long you had been under the rubble before she had arrived, and even if she had gotten there minutes after, your wounds were so numerous it would have been close.
Raw pain ripped through her as emotion broke through her carefully crafted dam, spilling out all at once over it’s months of accumulating, effectively taking grip over her entire being. She did not cry however. The ability to do such had been lost to her years before and would never come back. Instead, she simply held your body close as she knelt in the dirt, mourning what she had never had the chance of claiming. She had been so close. Her helmet showed that your heat signature had not even grown cold.
Taking her glove off, she reached for your own hand. Even if it was just once, she wanted to feel your skin against hers, without the barrier of metal or leather you both consistently wore. Fingers lacing your own, it once again brought a wave of sorrow crashing over her.
Your hands, strong and calloused from years of work, felt better pure Naboo silk to her own. They remained loose and unmoving, even as her own knuckles turned pale at the strength with which she grasped them. A silent plea to her ancestors, the maker; anyone who would answer the questions she herself didn’t know. Never having been one to believe that those unseen could have much of an influence on the living, she didn’t expect an answer. Only someone to shift the unbearable grief to.
Yet, as she lay mottionless over your corps, she received one. If her own hand hadn’t been so tightly clenched she may have missed it, and in her stay she thought she was imagining it. But then it happened. Again. Then again.
Your pulse, weak and uneven, but there.
Throwing herself back, she quickly changed the viewing mode on her helmet as she tried in vain to keep her hopes from rising. She knew very well it could just be her own that she was feeling and until there was concrete proof then-
There.
In the corner of her visor read your heart rate weak and uneven, just as she had felt before, but there.
She wasted no time pulling you from the rubble and nothing short of sprinting back to her ship, keeping in mind there were undoubtedly unseen and internal injuries as she did her best not to jostle around. She could only thank whatever force there was out there that she had taken the one ship of the coven that had a med chamber in it. Though it was well worn and outdated at best in comparison to the newer ones, it would serve her purpose until she could do something better.
The machine’s light humming reached through the air as it began working on your more severe wounds, the steady drone of the machinery a stark contrast to her own shaky hands as she piloted the ship off the cursed planet, making sure to keep an eye out for any lingering ships of the empire. It would only make your situation worse if you were to be caught in the middle of a firefight as your wounds were tended, though she did not even know if she would be able to gain enough control of herself to fly away from such an endeavor unharmed.
Once certain that there was no one following and they were out of range of the planet, she set the craft to autopilot and was back by your side immediately. The droid had just finished removing the armor from your body and tending to the majority of life-threatening wounds, moving on to what it could finish with the limited supplies it had. She had to resist grabbing your hand, instead putting the energy into pulling the medical log. Reading over it, her heart sized at the vast number and varying severity of each listing as she read further and further on.
Oblique-displaced fracture-R/Humorous, Transverse Fracture-R/Tibia, Hairline fractures of Ribs-R/arm/leg, Bruising of Kidney/Lungs/Liver, Puncture of R/Lung-Bone Frag. Removed-Origin-twelfth intercostal rib, Sever Grade four concussion, Multiple lacerations
She had no idea what had been fixed and what had not, but the number of bacta patches missing from the supply put a small ease on her, and the sight and sound of your slowly steady vitals was enough to keep her from jumping to extremes. She had no particular love for droids, though certainly not hating them as much as the young Din, the money spent to install the machinery was well used, even if the original purpose had been to heal warriors after missions with wounds that needed immediate attention.
That did not mean she found any time to rest on the way home, constantly watching for the slightest sign of life other than the low beeping of the monitor, and the ever so faint rise and fall of your chest as she counted each breath you took. The flight seemed to take double the amount of time it normally did, each second dragging on for eternity, until finally the landing gear of the Starjumper touched the surface of Nevarro. Thankfully it was night, and she had no issues once again lifting you into her arms and carrying you through the deserted streets to the coven. Its familiar coolness encompassed her as soon as she emerged from the stairs into the lower levels. The deathly silent halls were a stark contrast to her own panic.
Ignoring the guards, who’s attention faltered as they caught sight of her haul, she brushed past and headed straight to the only person who could help.
Olia, their healer, answered the door in her sleeping clothes, helmet clearly having been shoved on in her haste to answer the Armorer’s loud and incessant pounding on the door.
“What in the stars do you want this late..at..” Her sentence tapered off as she saw it wasn’t just a random idiotic warrior who had injured themselves, but her Alor, holding someone who clearly wasn’t Mandalorian.
“Fix them.”
The next few hours were a flurry of activity as Olia fixed what the med unit had not, resetting your afflicted arm which had been simply bandaged before and trying not to flinch at the nasty noises it made while doing so. Each thread of the needle to close skin together felt as if it were digging into her own flesh. Still, she watched, unable to tear herself away even as she knew in the back of her mind that rumor had already spread about her return. They would be looking for answers, and she would give them in due time. For now, they would have to practice patience just as she was.
Finally, two hours later, Olia was done. Wiping the sweat from the back of her neck as she admired her work, she explained the situation to the Armorer as she approached your bedside on stiff legs. She simply stared, not daring to touch when you looked so fragile. She hated it, the way your skin had lost its beautiful tone. The once powerful and proud posture she had seen stepping around the forge like a wild loth was nowhere to be seen. Your body seemed to have sunken in on itself, defensive even now.
“Her body is keeping itself under for now. Not surprising given the amount of trauma and injuries sustained, but if she does start to come around, I’ll give her something that should keep her under, or at least enough that she won’t register what’s going on. I would recommend it for as long as we can so that her wounds have time to heal without issue.”
She looked back over your still body, letting out a sympathetic sigh as she moved to do so.
“Even then, she’s not going to be moving around on her own too much any time soon. Wherever she came from, I hope they aren’t expecting her back anytime soon.”
The Armorer could feel the underlying question in her words, and for what she had done the women had earned her answer.
“That won’t be an issue. There is nowhere to go back to.” She looked away from your form for the first time, something that did not go unnoticed by the observant healer.
“She’s ours now. Treat her as you would any warrior, for she has fought just as bravely.”
She nodded solemnly. The Alor was know to always be serious and straight laced, but the way she was acting now gave way to more than words could ever tell. Tentatively, she rested a hand on her pauldron.
“Go. Get some rest. I can watch over her for now.”
The Armorer hesitated, feeling the lack of rest catching up as the adrenaline finally began to wear from her system. But to leave now would only leave her mind to wonder instead of knowing what was happening at every moment.
Olia sensed her hesitation, pushing her more firmly in the direction of the door.
“Once she’s more stable I will move her to a more comfortable bed. If there’s any changes then I’ll alert you but until then there’s nothing for you to do, and the others are bound to be wanting answers.”
Rod straight shoulders dropper slightly at her words, and a smile tore its way across the old woman’s face as she realized she had won.
Guiding her further out, she made sure the smith was out and well on her way to her own space before closing the door. What she didn’t see was that, instead of turning down the hall that led to individual dwellings, she instead turned right, down the path that would lead her to the only place she could think, to feel less powerless than she was right now. Her forge, where she fell heavily onto her work bench, unmoving as she stared blankly into the once comforting blue flames of the fire. Now they only acted as a painful reminder, thinking back to the times back in your own dwelling. She had yet to move, and Paz found her in the same position when he entered, leading to their current situation.
“I would never doubt your commitment to the tribe, but I must doubt the wisdom of bringing an outsider here! Into the heart of our tribe!”
Had she been in any other situation, she would have no hesitation in putting him back in his place. Heavy infantry expert and lead warrior or not, he had no right to speak in such a way to her. The only thing that saved him from her hammer and tongue was the fact her mind was still filled with thoughts of you. In this moment she even found herself thankful for his questioning. It meant that there was at least one person still thinking straight enough to be an effective leader in her stead.
“It’s her.”
“It's her?” he parroted the words, twisted with their own sense of confusion. “What do you mean it’s h-“ The words stuck mid-sentence as the wheels turned in his head, slowly putting the pieces together. From where he knew she was going, the small glimpse and rumors he had gotten from the others describing you, and the way his Alor was acting now, he was able to come up with his own relatively accurate assumption.
“The Smith.”
Her silence was his only answer, but it was all he needed.
Moving slowly, he settled his own large frame next to hers on the bench, which creaked under the weight. It felt odd, seeing her look so deflated and almost small. Even after years of putting on muscle from the forge and training, she still had nothing on him size wise. Though he was still positive she could beat him in a fight if it came to it, and she had countless times before.
His voice took on a softer, more rumbling tone.
“How did it happen?”
“The Empire. I only got there after they were gone, though there was really nothing left to go back to.”
He wanted to ask more, what they were doing there, why they chose such an outlandish, insignificant town, but he already knew. They both knew. It was because of them. While tolerated by the empire, both sides knew the other would wipe them out if given the chance. With so many going to one town multiple times, it was bound to draw attention. They had just been willing to believe that the Empire would turn a blind eye to it, just like they had with Nevarro.
How foolish of them.
Now they had dragged an innocent bystander, who had done nothing but help them and expecting nothing in return, into their fight, costing them not only their home but almost their life.
Though Paz was more akin to fighting than feelings himself, he could see the turbulence going on within her. Years of being what one might consider confidents let him know everything he needed to.
“She’ll pull through. From what you’ve told me, she’s strong. Not to mention she has Olia looking after her. And besides,” he stood up, walking out to give her space to do what she did best. To think, and come up with the next best plan of action for them to take.
“I still have yet to meet this mysterious smith.”
_______________________________________________
You had never been much of a morning person. Waking up bright and early just to face the scorching heat of your planet's twin suns combined with that of your forge didn’t make for a promising work day. Alas, that was when a majority of customers would come looking for wears and weapons, as well as to hire your services. Even though you preferred working during the marginally cooler nights, you still braved the day, gritting your teeth and dragging your feet as you forced your body into motion. As hard as it had always been then, it was nothing compared to how you were feeling now.
Every fiber of your being felt as if it had been run over by a Loshev, then further trampled on. Not even in the early times of your apprenticeship, when you had gone to bed with the inability of even being able to lift your arms to fold back the blankets after lifting your hammer an immeasurable amount of times, had you ever felt this sore. Everything from head to toe hurt, and the thought of moving at all was enough to fill your body with a sense of dread.
Instead of doing so, you settled on just getting your eyes open, which itself proved to be a difficult task. They felt as if the skin itself was welded together; made of Kiern metal as they dragged open painfully.
Darkness was the first thing you saw. Shapes and colors only came along after a few moments as your eyes adjusted. Blurred objects slowly came into focus as you took in your surroundings.
You were in a dimly lit room, the only source of light coming from a small lantern hanging from the wall. It’s glow cast drastic shadows on each object, giving the unfamiliar space a touch of comfort with its warm light. The furnishings themselves were rather bare, consisting of only a few boxes stacked on top of one another with small trinkets of one kind or another littered around, and the bed which you currently resided on.
Pulling the blankets aside, you hissed at the way your body groaned in protest, feeling as if every nerve were on fire. It appeared that the lantern also provided the only source of heat because as soon as the surprisingly quality blanket left you were subjugated to the cool air of the small space. You noted areas of bandages scattered all over your body, covering most of your arm and spilling across your torso. The scratchy material could also be felt under your pants, catching on the material and rubbing uncomfortably at your temples.
Pushing yourself into a sitting position, your head swam as the pounding from within increased, leaving you gasping for breath. As much as it hurt, you had to keep moving. You didn’t know where you were, or who was around. The last thing you remember was the walls of your home coming down around you as fighters screamed overhead. For all you knew, you were being held by some backworld smuggler who intended to use you for profit, working to make weapons or using your body for other means. Bandaged wounds or not, you had to get out before the choice was taken away.
Getting to your feet was, unexageratly, one of the most difficult things you had ever done. Your legs gave out as soon as they touched the ground, forcing you to use a majority of upper body strength to drag your way across the room to the door on the opposite wall. It was far from graceful, and there was even a point where you bumped into one of the various stacks of crates. It was nothing more than a little bump, but enough to knock a precariously placed holoboard from its perch on the edge.
Clattering to the floor loudly, it only prompted you to move faster, the fear of someone having heard the ruckus and coming to investigate. You prayed to the maker that wasn’t the case, but with the luck you had been having lately it should have been no surprise when the door opened with a loud creak. A shadow fell over your crawling form, and you looked up expecting the worst. Someone like a pirate or scavenger, maybe even an enforcer. What you weren’t expecting was a child, or what you assumed was one at least.
The person standing in the doorway was small. They were just shy of reaching halfway up the frame, lithe frame hunched in on itself from what you could see peeking around the opening. It was hard to tell their exact age, due to the achingly familiar helmet they wore. While far from being a replica, it was still close enough to that of your beloved Armorer to send a pang through your already aching body. The polished metal reflected the new light of the hall in an almost blinding manor. An owlish visor stared down at your form, just as frozen as you were.
Then, before you could react, they were gone. Light footsteps echoed down the corridors, growing more and more faint until they disappeared completely, leaving you in silence once again. There was only a moment of hesitation before you were on the move once again, now with a reinvigorated urgency.
Finally making it to the door, you used the frame to pull yourself up, gasping all the while as sharp jolts of pain stemmed from every part of your body. Emerging from the room you were met with the sight of similar metal walls as the room. They extended in both directions, the one to your left extending into darkness while there were two branching paths on the right. While having no idea where exactly you were and no reference on how to get out, you still pushed forward.
Heading right, your path was lit by only the occasional light on the wall. Some were the normal low lights that could be found on virtually any planet, while others were a more archaic version using oil and gas were scattered in between. You could tell you were most likely somewhere underground judging from the cool, damp feel the air carried. Either that or you were on an already cold planet, as judging from the state of the room you woke in, it was doubtable that you were in such a place that would waste resources on high quality cooling.
Reaching the split path, you paused, giving yourself a moment to breathe and recuperate as you listened carefully down each. The left was dead silent, almost unnervingly so, and for a moment you thought the second was the same. However, the light flicker of the nearest flame caught your attention. It moved consistently back in the direction you came, not like how it would normally; and with how much of your life had been spent staring and carefully watching such flames it was almost childs play to tell it was being manipulated by something else. Listening closer once again, you could hear it. The slight whisper of the wind. It’s draft was light, almost undetectable, but if you enough it was there. Gently caressing your skin and whispering promises of a way out.
It was a slow go, and painful the entire time. Your body gave not a moment of relief, in just as much pain as when you woke up if not more. It was hard to even take a full breath. Your lungs felt as if they would burst with each inhale. It was as if the air itself was made of fire. The pain didn’t leave much room for thought, but those that you did have were for the armored warrior you had been so abruptly reminded of earlier.
You had no idea where she was now, or if she even knew what had happened. The message may have never even gotten through, and while the Mandalorians were always well informed of the events going on around the galaxy you had no idea how long you had been here. It could be just a night or day; maybe even a week. She only visited every thirty rotations, so she could only find out when she came by for her next visit, only to find nothing but ash.
Would she mourn your supposed death, or would it be more so due to the loss of a weapons provider and face they could use to get supplies and information without knowing who it was really going to? Maybe it would be a relief not to have to worry about any information about them being uncovered. A loose end tied up without them having to do any of the work.
The thought of her throwing whatever connection you thought you had away, especially after having fallen so hard for the strong woman, hurt your heart almost as much as your body. It was a mortifying thought, and one that distracted you from not only the pain for a moment, but also caused a lapse in judgment that allowed your pursuers to get so close. It was only too late that you heard their footsteps echoing behind you in the dimly lit hall. A new wave of fear coursed through your body, pushing you further as they got closer to you, and yourself finally emerging into a larger section of the hall. This one had alcoves lining the top of the wall, allowing the moonlight and cool night air from outside to filter in and drain the hope from your body. The entire time you thought you were getting closer to a way out, you had just been losing yourself deeper in the maze of the unfamiliar compound. It was cruel for fate to do so, but there was nothing to be done now. Not when your pursuers were getting so close.
Your eyes darted around the small area, locking for a place to hide or at least a weapon to defend yourself with, before settling on one of the many alcoves. It was under the small windows that allowed the traitorous light and breeze in, leaving it bathed in darkness.
Thinking quickly, you limped over and forced yourself into the narrow space. It was plenty tall, but so thin it forced your shoulders straight and grated on your exposed skin as you slipped in. Here, your breaths sounded even louder and more labored, forcing you to muffle them with your hand and making it even harder to breathe. It wasn’t the best spot, and quite obvious now that you thought about it, but there was no time to find a new one as a group burst in through the arch you had emerged from seconds prior.
It was hard to see with your eyes still adjusting to the dimness of your little space combined with the light blur they still held, and you simply squeezed them shut, unable to watch as you listened to them get closer to your hiding spot, and focused on remaining as silent as possible. One hand clamped over your mouth, the other wrapped around your body as it squeezed as tightly as possible, as if it were the only thing keeping you together.
You could hear them talking. Their voices sounded muffled even as they bounced off the cold stone walls, and they spoke in low tones that made it nearly impossible to hear. A few still made their way through however.
‘Escaped’ ‘gone far’ ‘Find them-’ ‘kill’
The last word sent a shiver down your spine. It was only made worse as one of the group got closer than any had yet stopped mere feet away. The rough, damp stone dug into your skin as you pushed yourself further back, duly noting the itching pull of your wounds as they grew heated.
They were going to find you, and once they did they were going to kill you, or worse.
A moment passed. Then two. Then several more, all waited out with tension so thick it would put any ship hull to shame, before the shadowy figure retreated. Their own footsteps faded in with the others as they moved on in search of their present target of you, continuing to head down the maze of halls.
Even once they were gone you didn’t allow yourself to relax for a full minute, too fearful of them coming back. But as the momentarily spike in adrenaline wore off and your current position became increasingly uncomfortable, you allowed yourself to relax. Greedily gulping in as much air as your recovering lungs would allow, you were doubled over as you tried to recover. That position, combined with the increasingly loud pounding in your ears, left you unaware of your surroundings and defenseless against the shadow that unknowingly approached.
Their arm reached in, easily pulling you from your hiding place and out into the open.
“N-no! Stop!” You fought back weakly, pushing away at the figure that held you in an iron grip, not yet painful but refusing to budge as you clawed at it uselessly.
“Please.” It was a whimpering, pathetic sounding plea. One born of desperation and fear. Never in your life would you think yourself to sink to such levels, yet here you were, bracing for the pain you knew would come. They would drag you back, either to that little room or somewhere even more secluded, and there was nothing you could do about it.
You braced as the person shifted, recoiling as they brought their free hand up. You expected a hit, a slap. Something that would daze if not knock you completely out. What you weren’t expecting was the gentle caress of fingers along the skin, tracing along your cheek and following its slope up, where it gently rested, silently urging you to open your eyes and raise your gaze.
There was hardly a chance to be confused by the action before a sense of familiarity hit. Worn leather, softer than porg fur and just as warm despite the chilly environment, was stained with the smell of oil and sharp tang of metal. It was a scent that you had thought of many times, haunting your thoughts at night as you wished to be nothing more than wrapped in its comfort.
With a shuddering breath, you forced yourself to look up into the visor of your captor.
The gold of her helmet seems even brighter now as the light of the moon causes it to practically radiate under its glow, starkly contrasting the inky darkness of the owlish visor as it tilts in a way that gives away her concern.
There’s a moment of silence as you simply stare at one another, an exchange of silent emotion as you take each other in.
“Tracinya’ika…” The voice that flows from her helmet is akin to a whisper, seeming almost impossibly soft for such a warrior. However quiet, it’s enough to break the last of your resolve. The Armorer catches you as your legs give out, exhaustion finally catching up. She doesn’t say a thing, simply letting you bury your face in the warm fur covering clasped over her shoulders as you silently hiccup and stutter.
“H-how did I get here? The last thing I remember is-” your unable to finish, screams of the villagers mingling with tie fighters coming to the surface along with a crushing, constricting feeling gripping your chest, as if you were trapped under the rubble once again.
Seeming to sense your thoughts, the Armorer places a comforting hand on your lower back to lead you away. When it becomes apparent that there’s no way you’ll be walking on your own, she pauses a moment, before bending down and sweeping you off your feet to carry you bridal style down the hall, past the other Mandalorians that had appeared without a sound. They were silent as she passed, though their curiosity was almost tangible. She paid them no mind however, easily carrying you through the dim halls and allowing you to once again bury your face into the fur of her cowl. If she minds she says nothing of it.
“There is much to explain.” Her voice rumbles, vibrating through her chest and against your cheek. “But you have been through much. For now, rest. When you awake, you can ask as many questions as you like.”
You wanted to argue, to protest, but there was no energy left to do so. Your escape attempt had left you drained. Instead, you simply let your head rest against the chilled metal of her armor, allowing the gentle sway of her walk to lull you back to sleep without the fear of what was to come, knowing you were safe as long as she was around.

“Just what do you think you’re doing?”
You froze, the crate of rations you were about to hand to the man next to you blocking your vision from the worst of the glare you could already feel. That barrier was shortly removed, leaving you exposed to the cross Mandalorian.
It had been foolish to think you would be able to sneak off without her knowing. Nothing went on in these tunnels that she didn’t know about. If you didn’t know any better you may think that she had monitors hidden around the place, or maybe even a tracking device to keep tabs on you. It was more likely someone had mentioned your whereabouts in passing, or she had come for one of her usual check-ins throughout the day.
“You should not be up and about, none the less moving supplies.” Her gaze snaps to the others, who were all similarly frozen as they watched. You felt slightly guilty, knowing they didn’t deserve her wrath.
“Why would you let her in here? If the cold doesn’t make her sick then the labor will only make her recovery that much longer.”
The man visibly flinched at her tone, her attention now focused on him as the others slowly back away, letting him take the blame.
“Well, I just thought-”
“You clearly did not, else she would not be working herself to the bone.”
She takes a step closer to the man, sending him into a panic as he quickly backpedals, stammering.
“Hey.” You grab her arm, instantly shifting her attention back to you. Unlike the others, you don’t shrink back or even flinch. Instead you stare back into the darkness of her helmet. “It’s not his fault. I told him it was alright, that I was fine to work.”
The Armorer stares a moment longer, glancing back once more at the others before grabbing you by the hand, shoving the crutch you had been using since your leg healed enough to put weight on into your hand and dragging you away. She continues to scold you as she walks, never pausing in her climb from the lower levels as she continues to make you feel more and more like a child.
“There is no reason for you to have to work in your condition. Olia said rest would do you best.”
“That was weeks ago.” You huff, using the wall to stabilize yourself a bit better as you attempt to keep up with her quick pace. “And it’s only right that I do something to pull my own weight, especially after all that you and the others have done for me.”
“You have already done enough for us, and once you are fully healed I know you will continue to help. Until then I implore you to rest.”
The concern she held made you blush, her complimenting words nearly winning you over. Too stubborn for your own good however, your tongue speaks your thoughts before you can stop it.
“I know, but I can’t help but feel that I’m taking advantage of you. I just want to be, you know, useful.”
Your words cause her to pause, nearly causing you to collide with her back, sending a glance over her shoulder to your deflated figure. Logically she knows that there’s nothing wrong with wanting to help out, even sending a streak of pride through her at your eagerness to help her people, but the small voice constantly hounding her and leading to her protectiveness was too loud to ignore.
To your surprise, instead of heading down the left hall to what you knew would lead to the room you had been set up in since arriving, she turned to the right. Following cautiously, you looked about with wide eyes, having never been down this way before despite being her for weeks now. There were still many parts of the tunnels you didn’t know, mainly memorizing the paths to important places such as the communal area, storage rooms(which were the easiest to sneak off to help in), and of course the forge.
Soon enough you enter another section. The smell of metal and oil hits as soon as you step over the threshold, taking you by surprise. It was even stronger here than the forge, which was saying something. Though with the number of weapons and armor lining the walls it was to be expected. Every inch of the room, from the ceiling to the floor and even laying in piles were weapons. The order with which they were all organized in was impressive, not a single piece out of place in the organized chaos. And there, in the middle of it all, was one of the biggest men you had ever seen.
Your own father had been large, standing at six five, and while this man seemed to be slightly shorter he more than made up for it with width. Shoulders like a rancore, with hands so large they made you jealous of the potential grip strength, he looked as if he could snap you without a second thought. It’s not as if you were some petite thing in your own right, yet you felt dwarfed for one of the first times in your life.
As soon as he noticed you enter, he stood, his head bowing in acknowledgement.
“Alor.” He helmet shifted towards you, unconsciously forcing you further behind your bronze protector. “How can I help you?”
She shifts to the side, exposing you further as her hand gently rests against the small of your back, pushing you further towards the giant.
“It seems our newest friend can’t sit still. Unfortunately I can not watch them at all times to ensure they do not sneak off, but I know I can trust you to watch and keep them entertained.”
His head tilts, studying you closer as your heart jumps to your throat. In the process of trying to pull your own weight, you were now nothing this man with having to babysit you.
“I’m sure he has better things to do. If we just go back I could-”
“No. You will stay with Paz until I come for you. He will keep you from sneaking to the lower levels and lifting boxes.” A warning lay under her tone, both for you and Paz. His helmet dips in a nod once again, silently accepting his new instructions as she lightly ruffles your hair, pulling back only when your hand swats at hers.
“Do not worry. I am sure you two will get along just fine. I’ve had enough trouble keeping him away as it is.” Before you could try and argue once again she was gone, turning on heel and heading back down the passage. Great. Now you were alone with a giant and potentially grumpy Mandalorian while surrounded by weapons, which was both potentially good and bad.
Taking a deep breath, you gathered your courage and turned back to Paz, as he had been called. He was still standing, watching as you cautiously approached.
“H-hello there.” You mentally cursed yourself for stuttering, only imagining what he might think of you now. Still, you powered on. “You’re name is Paz, right? I’m-”
“I know who you are.” He cuts you off, flopping back down into his seat as he picks up the weapon he had previously been inspecting.
“Oh….You do?”
He snorts. “Everyone knows who you are. You made quite the entrance.”
You flush, still embarrassed you had made such a spectacle arriving. Definitely not how you had hoped to meet such esteemed warriors, bloody and defeated. He seemed to sense your embarrassment.
“No matter. I’ve known about you before then.” He twirled the blaster in his hand, one that you now recognized as your own craft. “Been a fan of your work for a while.”
Gesturing to the bench across from him, you soon found yourself becoming comfortable with the blue man. Within the hour you had relaxed completely, joking around with him as he answered any questions you had about the location of rooms or the odd Mandalorian you had yet to talk with. The conversation quickly shifts to, of course, weapons, as you talk about the ups and downs of each design.
“It’s good to have someone to talk with like this. Nobody back on Quilon were interested in the craft of weapons. They just cared if they shot or not.” He took the weapon you had just finished checking, looking for nicks or spots needing maintenance, and handed you another. It was a small mercy he had granted you. While not a physically demanding task it was enough to keep you busy and feeling useful. There was a lot to get through after all, and he surmised there was no one better to check weapons then one who knows their ins and outs.
“While many like to use the weapons, they don’t get too familiar with their inner workings.”
“That’s why we’re here though.” You point out, only causing him to sigh.
“Yes, but if I have to fix one more blaster that simply has a residue build up that could be solved with a good cleaning I’m going to strangle them.”
“I’m glad she brought me here. What she’s done, what you’ve all done, is amazing. If I could spend my life working alongside her it would be more than enough.
He pauses, in the middle of sharpening a skinning knife, his helmet tilting up before going back to his work. “I’m sure she would be delighted to hear so. You should tell her yourself.”
You pause, confused. “What do you mean? She already knows that I want to continue making weapons for you all.”
Now you had his full attention, staring back at one another across the small gap as you both tried to discern the others thoughts. His words made no sense. She knew your intentions to stay, so why would you need to explain any further? You wanted to stay, more specifically just for her, but there was no way you could just tell her that. To risk ruining everything you had built between the two of you? Just for some silly little crush? No thank you. You were content being as useful to her as you could now, relishing in the little crumbs of affection you received now.
“You have to be kidding me.” He finally says, breaking the silence. “She literally calls you ‘ni tracinya’!”
You blink owlishly, still not understanding. Your Mandoa was still coming along. As of now you only knew a few words, mostly greetings and curse words, much to the amusement of the clan and the disdain of the Armorer.
He throws his hands in exasperation, head practically slamming back into the wall behind him. “It means ‘my flame’ for makers sake! Listen,” He leans forward, placing his elbows on his knees as his voice takes on a more serious tone. “Think real hard, back to when you first came here. You’re telling me you haven’t noticed anything?”
Now that he mentions it, you do remember some odd things that you had never really put into question before now.
When you had first been cleared to move out of bed by Olia, the Armorer had insisted on moving you to a room closer to the forge, claiming its warmth would do you better then the cooler parts of the tunnels where the injured normally stayed. You had been cautious, unsure of being so close to the center of the tribe space and felt as if you were being invasive. She had assured you it was only temporary, to sooth your concerns you suspected, though that was quickly thrown out the window as the small space quickly collected a number of trinkets thanks to the little ones. After overcoming their initial hesitancy and fear of being an outsider, they were constantly bringing small objects and bits of easily bent and cut pieces of metal for you to make things out of, trading your creations for their own crude versions. The majority were from the Armorer however, and you treasured those the most. They were nothing extravagant, certainly not to the level of detail you would go into, but you wouldn’t have expected her to. Her focus was always more on practicality, though that’s not to say her works weren’t beautiful in their own right. Your own just placed more emphasis on the small details, and you were allowed the time and pleasure of putting them there.
She had brought you all your meals during that time, eventually evolving to the point where you would enjoy them together in her forge when you were well enough, your backs pressed to one another with a covering tightly wrapped around your eyes. Hardly was there a time when you weren’t greeted with the warm shine of her armor, the fur she wore brushing your skin and sending shivers down your spine with how close she stood at times. Her hand would constantly be touching your back or shoulder, holding your wrist as she led you through the halls even when you knew the way. There were many nights you would fall asleep in the forge, lulled by it’s warmth and the familiar sound to metal striking metal. It both soothed and made the itch to work once more that much worse.
The memory brought on a shy smile, accompanied by a light flush across your skin. It was times like that when you could allow yourself to wish, to hope, that you might mean something more than just a friend or fellow smith.
Just as soon as the thought arrived you were quick to banish it. Dreaming of the impossible would only bring more disappointment. And so, with a small laugh and roll of your eyes, you implored Paz to put it to rest; and to his credit, he did. The thought still lingered on your mind however, and you wanted to curse him for putting it there.
You continue to check and clean the weapons in peace, avoiding any and all conversation surrounding the previous topic until dinner. Or what you thought was around the right time. It seemed that even with all the time spent in the dark tunnels you had yet to gain the innate ability to just tell what time it was without looking at a clock. Paz sure knew though, racking his weapon with you following his lead.
“Your company wasn’t as annoying as others, and your weapons knowledge and appreciation is respectable, though I would expect nothing else from someone in your situation.” He reached his hand out, watching as you realized he wanted you to shake it. His hands were just as strong as you had thought, firmly grasping your own as you got into a small battle trying to squeeze the other. “Feel free to find me any time you’re bored. Keep Alor from getting frustrated and who knows, once you heal enough I might be able to teach you how to fight for the next time you run into any imperial troops.”
“That sounds...great.” He dropped his arm, handing you your walking stick and leading you back through the tunnels to the communal area as you added the new path to your mental map. His large strides were hard to keep up with, and though you suspected he had adjusted his pace you were still out of breath by the time you reached your destination. Inside the circular space there were a number of mandalorians lounging around. Children ran amuck, some helmed some not, weaving between the adults and ignoring their complaints. As soon as you entered a crowded space they descended like a swarm. Small hands pulled at your clothes, climbing up your non injured leg. After the scolding they had received last time they made sure to give your injuries a wide berth.
They were clamoring, all trying to be first to show you the small projects that had been working on or made that day. The others looked on with mild amusement, or so you assumed that's what was shown behind their visors. There were many jokes passed around that you were turning their young warriors into inventors and thinkers, though you hardly saw it as a problem. Exploring bright minds and exercising critical thinking skills would only make them that much better in any tight situations. It’s not like they couldn’t do both after all.
Your eyes scanned the crowd, bouncing over the family colors painted in intricate patterns on armor as you looked for one in particular.
“She’s still in the forge.” You jumped, causing your current passengers to squeal as they were nearly thrown from your elevation to the ground. Olia stepped closer, shooing the children away, causing a ruckus of groans and complaints, but nevertheless did as they were told. They knew better than to disrespect an elder, and their medic at that. Placing two ration portions into your hands, she’s already pushing you down the main hall.
“Never a moment of rest for that one.” She jokes, turning on her heel and heading back into the common area before you even have a chance to speak. With nothing more than a shrug, you continue on, walking the by now familiar path to deliver the food.
Warmth is the first thing that greets you, a heavenly contrast to the otherwise cold and damp dwelling. Not that you hated it, but growing up on a planet with two suns and working in a forge for the majority of your life made anything below blazing feel like Hoth. The clang of metal striking metal rings clear and crisp, but as owled eyes catch your movement, the hammer pauses mid strike, afloat for just a moment before quickly being deposited back into her belt.
Holding up the ration packs for her to see, she’s already moving, fluidly packing up her project and clearing a space as you pull the bench from the wall, settling on the wood with a light creak. Not long after, gloved hands found your skin, briefly brushing over your cheeks and causing butterflies to erupt throughout your body, setting every nerve on fire as the soft fabric of the blindfold replaced her hands. It wasn’t something you ever questioned or protested, simply content being allowed the level of trust such an action required, though you would often question what you had done to earn such an honor from an esteemed figure such as herself. The tools along her belt clicked softly, the only thing telling her location as she closed the shutters to the forge.
Not a word was said the entire time, and you didn’t need any. The practice had been born after she had gotten on your back about finishing meals, only to have you express your awkwardness of eating alone while she watched, combined with your own concern with her eating enough. She was always working, crafting new armor and weapons, or meeting with elders and warriors to discuss and organize the smaller aspects of clan life. The disregard she had for her own health when she always put so much work into that of others was both adermable and frustrating. It became one of the few things you could do during the day, making sure she had eaten and stayed hydrated in the heat of the forge. Dinner was the only time she sat down however, enjoying whatever rations or food had been chosen for the night.
After the blindfold was on and your own ration pack was in hand, it wasn’t long before you felt her warmth at your back as she too settled down on the bench. The fur of her cowl tickled your skin, telling you of how close she sat. Then you just talk. Telling her about your day and the new things you had learned.
“Introducing me to Paz almost makes up for the scene earlier.” You joke “His knowledge of weapons and their care is amazing. I can see myself getting closer with him.”
You could have imagined it, but you could swear you felt her tense behind you.
“Not too close I would imagine. Olia has informed me that you should be cleared to go back to work within a week or two.”
Perking at her words, you grew excited. It had been so long that you had begun to think you would never craft again.
“I’m glad to hear that. I already worry about the muscle mass I’ve lost since being laid up.” Laughing, you bump your shoulders against hers. “I feel like my shoulders are only half their size now, everything all atrophied and squishy.”
She’s silent, and you think the joke just fell flat, or she’s simply tired from the day.
“So you enjoyed staying with Paz today. I can assume that means I won’t have to worry about you sneaking off if I leave you with him again?”
“No.” Chuckling, you set down the now empty ration container. There’s no rush for her to finish, as you enjoy these small moments. It’s easy to pretend to be something more, something closer.
It may have been the comforting warmth of her body combined with that of the forges own heat and scents, or simply the exhaustion that came with having been able to do actual work for the first time in weeks. Either way, your tongue was loose and words flowed without thought.
“It’s hard to believe I’m here. I never thought I would ever go anywhere besides Quilon. It’s where my family has lived since forever. My mother and father, my grandparents, their parents and so on. We’ve all come from the same planet. After they died I was scared to even think about traveling. I thought that if I left I would be alone. The forge was the only thing I had left even close to family.”
Losing it had been hard. When you had first heard the news after waking it had felt like you were crushed by its foundation all over again. Olia and the Armorer had to practically force you to eat, not having the energy to do even want to get out of bed. Recovery had been slow, especially when there was nothing to go back to. It was around the time she let the children into your room, tasking them with keeping an eye on you while she tended to the clan duties she had been neglecting. It was the young ones, so bright and full of energy, that pulled you from the slump. As soon as your crafting skills were discovered after absentmindedly making a flower out of paper scraps they had all but demanded you show them more. Leading you through the tunnels and teaching you games had come after. Soon enough you were almost back to normal, able to smile and laugh once again.
It had nearly broken her to see you in such a state. The fire your eyes had once held had been reduced to little more than smoldering ash, while the glow that radiated seemed to radiate from your skin itself had dimmed. You had lost everything to the empire, but Maker be damned if she wasn’t going to do her best to give it back and then some.
“Would it be wrong of me to say it was a good thing?” She jerked at your words, taken by surprise.
“And why would that be?”
“Well, I got to meet all of you. Olia, Paz, even the young ones. You’ve all been so kind to me.” A slight hesitation, unsure if the next words would be stepping over boundaries.
No. You had come this far, and knowing her she would only pry in that aloof way of hers until you divulged a proper answer.
“Even if none of you feel the same way, I like to think that you’ve become something of a family to me. It’s been so long since I've known what it's been like to be a part of a family, so that’s what I think this feeling is at least.” A deep breath, pushing the words that seemed to catch. You can’t live feeling like this anymore, Paz’s words coming back to you once again and giving you a small amount of confidence.
“I would like to be a part of your family. With you, that is.”
With bated breath, you wait. She’s silent, but not in the way she normally is. It’s more calculated, the air itself charged. Heart pounding in your ears, you're not sure if you would have even heard her answer. Instead of any words however, you find yourself blinded by the light of the flames as your blindfold is practically ripped off, revealing the cause of your emotional rollercoaster herself, helmet back on yet with a gaze more intense than you’ve experienced yet.
“I have always been content with my deal in life. I provide for my clan, do my best to lead and keep them safe. True leaders are those that are selfless, however,” her hand grasps yours, pulling you closer. The cool feel of her helmet sends shivers down your spine; a stark contrast to your own burning skin. “But since I have met you, I have been nothing but selfish. I want everything that you are; from your body to your soul.”
Getting up, she leads you to the far corner of her forge. A small strike of disappointment hits as she lets go of your hand to dig through one of the storage compartments. It quickly dissipates as she emerges with an all too familiar item.
You gasp. It was a helmet, just like the one you had been working on and lost on Quilon. The real one was lost, but the one before you took many of the elements you had worked into your own and combined them with a more traditional Mandoan style. The eyes had the same wider vision you had been incorporating. A combination of the classic t-visor with the more elegant swooped eyes that females seemed to favor. The jawline was also slightly more convex then normal, allowing for greater range of the head and felt less claustraphobic. Other than that, it seemed she had taken her own creative liberties and upon closer inspection you saw it was eerily similar to her own. Instead of bronze it was a silvery blue, the same three lines running down the forehead with only two horns, looking as if they were coated in the bronze color as her own. Etched into each of the cheek recesses was a hammer and tongs respectively, done in the same elegant etching found on many of your own weapons.
“I will not push you to make a decision, but I do wish you to know; if you pledge yourself to the creed, to the tribe, to me, you will never find yourself alone again. I will personally make sure of it.” Her voice barely makes its way past the vecoder. Never before had she spoken in such a gentle tone, even to yourself.
“You will be mine as I will be yours.”
Taking the helmet in your own hands, the surprising lightness of such a large metal object nearly causes you to throw it. Turning it over and inspecting every inch, you know you’re only delaying the inevitable. For so long you wanted to be part of a family, to help and be more than just a weapons crafter. Furthermore, the very person you wished, no, yearned, to spend the rest of your life with was the one to ask.
“To spend the rest of my life by your side, providing for the tribe, would be all too short.” Smiling, you pull the helmet, your helmet, closer.
For a second you think she’s short circuited, frozen in place. Then, quick as a blaster shot, she grabs your arm and drags you from the forge, all but throwing the shutter open and practically running down the hall as you struggle to keep up with your still sore leg. Briefly you catch a flash of familiar blue armor, but it's gone before you can get a good look. Instead you focus on keeping pace with the bronze warrior.
“Wh-where are we going.”
Others are watching as you pass, moving out of your path as their Alor continues her war path.
“The elders.” She says without stopping and, not winded in the slightest as, in one fell swoop, you find yourself swept into her arms and being carried bridal style as her pace continues to pick up speed. An impressive move if you hadn’t been so shocked.
“We have much to prepare.”

please can you explain what knifeposting is?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
jddafhkjsfka okay so BASICALLY.
the new tv series shadow and bone is a combination of two separate book series based in the same universe (the grishaverse). the main character of the grisha trilogy, alina starkov, is regarded as a saint because of her special powers. inej ghafa, a spy/assassin in the six of crows duology, is a follower of the religion that heralds alina as a saint. inej has many knives, and one of them is named after alina. inej has always felt guilty about her line of work. committing murder betrays her faith, but she has no choice so she does it anyway, even though it pains her.
chronologically, the events of soc begin after tgt ends, so these characters have never met. THE TV SHOW HOWEVER combines their storylines, and so they do interact. inej in the show sees a display of alina’s powers and feels her faith validated.
inej up until that point, following her faith, refrains completely from killing, even when given the opportunity to secure her freedom from indenture. until she must do it to protect those she loves. she buries a knife into a man’s head to save kaz in a church. she later murders another woman who threatens to kill everyone she loves, whom she knows is capable of it. she throws a knife into the heart of a man who is endangering alina herself. and alina is able to use that very knife to save herself and everyone else. (x)
in their final scene together, inej pledges her hand to serve alina, and alina Gives Her A Knife. inej, who had always felt guilty about sacrificing her faith for love, is given a knife, a tool for killing, by the saint she believes in, as a tool for protecting. (x)
KNIFEPOSTERS are basically a sub-section of alinej shippers who, for gay reasons, related to these three (3) interactions A Totally Normal Amount. our hobbies include drawing thematic parallels between these two characters who never interacted from the original texts, predicting how the show in future might reflect the impact they’ve now had on each others lives, making comparisons to literary quotes/other media about knives and the intersection of faith and love, imagining an alternate grishaverse timeline where alina and inej spend the rest of the series side by side and Must Eventually Kill Each Other, and having fun.
we use the "knifeposting" tag bc we don't want to disturb people who just came into the alinej tag for fun with our ramblings about inej making weapons out of alina's bones etc etc

Dev Patel and the Green Knight
I finally got around to seeing The Green Knight. Overall, I enjoyed it--David Lowery does a good job capturing the essential weirdness of the tale, which is very much about taking a mundane circumstance (a Christmas feast) and suddenly catapulting the reader into a mythic otherworld through the intrusion of the alien and monstrous, and the fantastical costumes, dramatic lighting, and dissonant score all contribute very well to a sense of otherness that permeates the original story.
But I find it interesting--and, I'll admit, a little frustrating--that no modern film adaptation of medieval literature is really capable of taking the story it's adapting on its own merits. This isn't an objection to modifying the source text, or taking it in new, non-literal direction. I can think of plenty of adaptations of work that play with the source material in interesting ways, and are better for it. Even very faithful adaptations like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings are inevitably going to alter the source based on the need to adapt it for the screen and the whims of the director. But when it comes to medieval classics, texts like Beowulf or Gawain and the Green Knight are always held at arm's length. An ironic layer is always interpolated into the original story, and even in modified form the story is never allowed to stand on its own.
Contrast, for instance, modern retellings of Arthurian legend; or Wagner's Nibelungenleid; or something like Neil Gaiman's book of Norse mythology. These are all adaptations of much older stories, all medieval; and the authors typically happy to let the stories operate on their own terms. In fact, that is often a selling point: dipping into these tales is a way of sampling an alien culture, one that is remote from us in time rather than space, and part of the sense of heightened drama is the understanding that these stories do not necessarily depict the world in the same way that modern realist prose does. They are fairy-stories, in the Tolkienian sense, and something not quite even like "high fantasy," which, although it is a genre which owes much to the mythic tradition, is usually *told* in the same manner as other realist fiction. And you could take these stories and re-cast them in a realist mold--that's definitely been done with Arthurian legend, either via anachronism or trying to place them in an era-appropriate historical context, and even that yields something quite like the original in tenor, even if the language used to relate the story is often very different.
Watching this movie, I was *strongly* reminded of Robert Zemeckis's Beowulf, in that this did not feel like an attempt to adapt Gawain and the Green Knight for the screen. It felt like an attempt to tell a story *about* Gawain and the Green Knight (the text), a story which does not stand on its own. You don't have to have read the text to understand the movie (although I think some directorial decisions would be a bit mystifying if you hadn't), but the movie definitely situates itself *as a response* to the text. Which is an odd choice! Actually, another good point of comparison is Spike Jonze's Adaptation. It started life as an adaptation of Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief, but Charlie Kaufman sort of gave up writing that halfway through and wrote a movie about the difficulty he was having writing *that* movie, and the result is something very weird (and very good) that is full of metafictional elements that depend on the existence of this other work, in a way that a straight retelling of The Orchid Thief for the screen obviously would not. And while The Green Knight isn't that extreme, it is definitely playing on the structure of the medieval poem, and replying to it.
The core of the movie (as I understood it) is a tension between young Gawain's aspiration to knightliness, his ambition which is born at least in part from his mother's encouragement, and his own failure to live up to the heroic ideal of greatness. Not chivalric--this is a movie in which the ethos of chivalry makes not even the briefest of appearance, which is weird given that it's nominally an Arthurian romance, and that the chivalric ethos is extremely important to the original text. Instead we have a generic greatness being described, one which is associated with renown, with taking part in mythic events, and with achieving high rank and honor. In the service of seeing her son obtain all this, Gawain's mother seems to cast some kind of spell, whereupon the titular Green Knight appears at Arthur's Christmas-feast; and as in the poem, a game of beheadings is proffered. Gawain accepts the challenge, beheads the knight, and the knight rides away, promising he'll meet Gawain a year and a day hence at the Green Chapel. So far so straightforward. When Gawain sets off a year later to meet the knight, his mother gives him an enchanted belt to keep him safe from harm. Gawain goes on to have a couple of side-of-the-road adventures and mishaps, the kind of thing that's par for the course when you're telling an Arthurian romance, until he arrives at the house of a mysterious benefactor, just about a day away from the Chapel, who grants him hospitality until the day of his challenge.
Now, in the original story, this is where Gawain gets the magic belt, and it's hugely important: Gawain and his host promise to exchange anything they might receive at the end of each day, when the host has been out hunting all day and Gawain has been in the house recuperating from his travels. During this time, the host's wife repeatedly tries to seduce Gawain; and Gawain is trapped between the imperative not to sleep with his host's wife (a major violation of the rules of good chivalric conduct!) and the imperative not to offend the woman (also a violation of those rules). He succeeds, for the most part; he is forced at one point to give his host a kiss at the end of the day, since the wife kissed him; this is shown as him holding nothing back and acting in good faith on the vow he made to his host. When Gawain finally rebuffs the wife for good, she insists that, even if he won't sleep with her, he should at least take a magic belt she has woven that will keep him from harm. He does; but he does *not* give this to his host. When he finally goes to the Green Chapel, the Knight returns the original blow as promised--but only nicks Gawain lightly. He reveals himself to be none other than the host who was sheltering him; the nick was his reprimand for withholding that final gift, but because of his good conduct he is otherwise left unharmed. The whole thing was a test of sorts, one which Gawain passed. Despite flinching at first from the blow, and keeping the belt secret, he shows himself ultimately to be a man of good (albeit not perfect) conduct, and *that* is why he wins honor from the whole affair.
The movie takes this basic narrative and alters it in key places, completely changing the valence of the whole thing. First, Gawain gets the belt at the beginning of his quest, as mentioned; he loses it on the way, but when he reaches the castle, the wife of his host (who succeeds in seducing him with a handjob) presents it to him as if she had woven it herself. He does not actually engage in the game of exchanged with his host, who is *also* not the Green Knight. And we're treated to a monologue about the color green from the wife that feels beat for beat like it's been ripped off from someone's undergraduate essay about Gawain and the Green Knight, which is a little weird even in the context of the rest of the movie. Finally when Gawain reaches the chapel, the knight goes to return the blow--and Gawain completely chickens out and flees. We are then treated to an extended sequence of Gawain returning home; being feted as a hero; earning his knighthood (presumably by lying about what happened); succeeding Arthur as king; him abandoning his low-class beau once she bears him a son, and marrying a princess; going to war; his son dying in a war; and finally, as an old man, being trapped in his throne room as a besieging army breaks its way inside. Just before they do, he removes the magic belt from around his waist, his head fall off, and bam--we're shown this has been an Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge thing this whole time, and the Green Knight has not yet landed his blow.
Gawain finally takes off the belt, throws it aside, and tells the knight to go ahead--and the knight bends down and congratulates him. In context, the reading seems to be this: the belt is a talisman of Gawain's mother's influence, of external expectations for what kind of man he is. The Knight is Arthur or perhaps an agent of his, and the test in *this* case is whether Gawain can be his own person. All the events leading up to this point are perhaps a part of the original magic Gawain's mother cast, an effort to Lilith Weatherwax her kid to greatness by putting him into an epic story. Implicitly, then, the Gawain and the Green Knight we all know is the false version of the tale, the tale as Gawain's mother would have it told.
This is all very clever. But I'm afraid it's so clever it falls apart in the end. Because the structure of the original story that this depends on is dependent in turn on taking the whole notion of chivalric virtue seriously, which this movie plainly does not. Gawain is shown as irreverent and lustful and a bit of a party animal--lovable and good hearted fundamentally, but definitely not an Arthurian hero. That's fine, but that's a very modern sort of character, one that feels out of place in a movie that is trying very hard also to be tonally unmodern, firmly embedded in a mythic otherwhen of Arthurian legend. Moments of slice-of-life mundaneness, while charming, strain mightily against the epic tone the movie tries to take in other places, and strange events like a ghost seeking her lost head or immense giants striding the landscape. We are jostled: are we in the land of myth? Or are we in historical Britain? We cannot be in both!
And this is a movie that was definitely made by people who had read the original text; not just the original text, but also a great deal of criticism *about* the original text. The movie namechecks the theme of fivefold symmetry that's incredibly important to the structure of the poem; there's the aforementioned undergrad essay about colors about 3/4th of the way through; and there's the fact that the structure of the original plot (down to Morgan LeFay in disguise as an old woman in the host's castle) is present in altered form in every detail. But none of these details add up to much. There's a weird homoerotic kiss with the host that implies that in fact *he* wanted to sleep with Gawain, in addition to his wife; the ghost Gawain encounters early on tells him the Green Knight is in fact someone he knows (and therefore *can't* be the host; I think it's implied to be Arthur, like I said, but this is never quite confirmed), and while all these things *about* the original poem are shown, none of them ever get integrated thematically into the plot.
I think as a result, whatever Lowery was going for, the whole movie kind of falls apart in the end. And that's a pity, because somewhere in there is just a really weird, visually striking, really gripping, embellished-and-polished-for-modern-sensibilities-but-also-thematically-true-to-the-source retelling of Gawain and the Green Knight. And that would have been a much better movie! What are we to make of this, a movie that purports to be telling a story-behind-the-story, but one that leaves no room or context for the original? After all, Gawain in the end does *not* flee, does not return home a coward and a liar; presumably, he earns his honor, and can be honest about what happened. But if he is honest, none of the rest of what we have been shown makes a lick of sense, or has any point.
One feels a bit as if modern directors, when confronted with medieval texts being a bit weird, a bit alien in their worldview, instead of realizing that's actually something people like some of from time to time, feel like they have to construct an artificial bridge between the Middle Ages and the present day. But because it is invariably metafictional and self-referential, as if to say "don't worry, we know nobody REALLY wants to watch a bunch of boring medieval shit played straight," it comes off as cringing and ashamed of its source material. This isn't a plea for historicity! Gawain and the Green Knight is not history. But one does occasionally want to see an adaptation of one's favorite works without directors being ashamed of the text they are adapting! And since most people will not have read the original, I am rather confused about what the director intends for the audience to get out of all these references that are dependent on it, but don't stand on their own merits within the narrative of the movie itself.
The acting was good, the set design and costumes were terrific, I loved the slow and measured pacing and the weird score, and the design of the Knight himself, and the landscapes and almost everything else about the movie. So I don't think it's a waste of time, especially if you have read and enjoyed Gawain and the Green Knight, in the original or in translation. But it's definitely a pity to see a movie that was, well, *almost* great, but ended up merely OK.

Kaleidoscope of Death, Ch. 120
Kaleidoscope of Death by Xi Zixu Link to Chinese / Novel Updates
Chapter 120: The Thirteenth Door
Right after the new year, it came about time for Gu Longming to enter his door.
Ruan Nanzhu selected a sixth door hint slip, and on it was a name familiar to all—Minotaur. A monster from ancient Greek mythology with a bull's head and a human's body that guarded a maze.
In the myth, it was a creature of an extremely violent temperament born of a human and a white bull. Shut away in the Labyrinth on the island of Crete, it ate seven pairs of boys and girls each year. Then it was killed by a bastard son of Athens, Theseus. Point was, there wasn't much intel to gain about the door from a hint like this. Only once they went in and encountered the actual situation could they connect it to the hint on the paper slip.
Lin Qiushi also showed this hint to Gu Longming ahead of time. After Gu Longming received it, he expressed his thorough gratitude for Lin Qiushi, and Lin Qiushi too was forthright with a vaccination—he said that in this door, he could not be responsible for Gu Longming's life, and Gu Longming ought to prepare himself accordingly.
Gu Longming agreed to every stipulation, and said he had already prepared himself for never coming out.
Their time of entry was roughly the tenth of the lunar new year, when celebrations were trailing off, leisurely vacations were coming to an end, and everybody grew busy again.
Lin Qiushi readied everything and began to wait for the door.
The tenth quickly came. It was a bright, sunny afternoon, and few people were in the mansion. There was only Lin Qiushi sitting in the living room eating Lu Yanxue's freshly cooked pumpkin seeds. Lu Yanxue's culinary skills were, as usual, the best; the pumpkin seeds she fried up were flavored with the five spices and fragrant as all hell. Lin Qiushi could pass an entire afternoon with just a handful of the stuff.
Ruan Nanzhu had already gotten changed and was waiting upstairs. Lin Qiushi saw that it was about time, and so hoisted his hefty backpack and headed upstairs to go look for him.
Due to their last door, Lin Qiushi intentionally stuffed his bag with a great number of food items. Daily necessities from outside could be brought inside, but weapons that were more against the spirit of the doors were not. Guns and other firearms, for example, could not be brought inside.
Once you'd entered the doors, of course, there might exist some special limitations, like in the sanitarium door when the NPC told them the rule where they could not eat food brought in from the outside. The reality was that these kinds of limitations were rare, but all Lin Qiushi wanted to achieve was the principle of Better Safe Than Sorry. At any rate, the condition from the tenth door where they had to open a chest if they wanted to eat had left quite the shadow on his psyche.
Lin Qiushi entered Ruan Nanzhu's bedroom and sat with him on the bed for a while. Then he felt the atmosphere around him change. It took only the time of a blink for Ruan Nanzhu, who had been sitting right beside him, to disappear without a trace. Lin Qiushi pushed open the bedroom door in front of him and saw that what had originally been the hallway was now a series of twelve black metal doors. What a familiar sight.
He walked to the sixth door and gave it a tug. The next moment, Lin Qiushi was sucked in by an immense force. The scenery around him was also altering dramatically, and by the time he opened his eyes again, he could feel a faint rocking beneath his feet.
Lin Qiushi took a closer look, and discovered that he'd appeared on a large old ship. It was just about sunset, and there were black clouds frighteningly low in the sky, as if they were going to smother the horizon at any moment. Inky seawater tossed before him, blown into violent waves by the winds.
Lin Qiushi smelled the gamy salt of the ocean, and because of the excessive waves, the ancient deck beneath his feet was ceaseless in its swaying. He saw that on the floorboards, there were seaweed-clung creatures clutching at the wood, making for an immensely uncomfortable sight.
Lin Qiushi took a few steps forward and saw in the ship cabin a dim-glowing light. He followed the corridor to the interior, and heard miserable wailing coming from inside.
"Uwaaaa, why am I here? What the hell did you all do to me?!" It had been a while since he last heard these cries of a newbie—Lin Qiushi was actually a bit surprised. He spotted the crying person immediately. It was a young woman, wiping at her tears with her hands. "You goddamn perverts, you guys must have kidnapped me. I'm going to call the cops and have you all arrested!!"
Most people were listening to her sob in silence. Newbies, after all, only ever reacted in so many ways: most cried; some tried to run; and some, of the truly psychologically frail sort, came in and pretty much had an immediate meltdown.
Lin Qiushi stood where he was. He noticed that around this girl were a few people who didn't look so good, who also seemed in various degrees of panic. They clearly weren't prepared to enter a door, and were likely newbies like the girl. But at least they weren't wailing endlessly like the young woman, and were still calm in comparison.
Lin Qiushi's gaze searched through the crowd and very quickly found its target—a woman seated in a corner and smiling at him.
The woman wore a long dress—the same outfit Ruan Nanzhu wore before they came in.
Lin Qiushi had the script in his head, and he took his time approaching the woman and holding out his hand: "Yu Linlin."
"Zhu Meng." The woman took his hand and smiled. "The red thread of destiny found us inside this door, let's cherish this meeting."
Lin Qiushi couldn't help but laugh.
"Indeed. Let's cherish this meeting."
Really, this little drama queen of his—putting on a show even when there was no stage to be had.
Just as the two were talking, a young man came tumbling in through the door. Though his face was unfamiliar, his clothes told Lin Qiushi his identity—it was Gu Longming, who'd agreed to meet with Lin Qiushi over the internet.
Gu Longming was entirely soaked. Once he came in he began to curse under his breath: "fuckers, throwing me on a lifeboat—why don't you just throw me into the ocean huh? Goddamn jealous of my beauty or what—"
Though he kept his voice down, Lin Qiushi's hearing was superb, and so could easily hear all the crap he was spewing. For a moment, Lin Qiushi himself didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Of course, he didn't laugh. He only cleared his throat once and covered his mouth with his hand, swallowing down the urge to smile. Gu Longming's eyes lapped the gathered people and very quickly fell upon Lin Qiushi and Ruan Nanzhu. He came over with a bright grin, greeting the two as if they'd just met completely by coincidence.
As a matter of act, this little trick where they faked a chance encounter was only useful for the earlier doors. Once in the later doors, that old fox-spirit manifested in everyone, and not having a partner actually made you the odd one out.
As for whether or not somebody would identify them as part of the same crew, Lin Qiushi used to worry about that. Now though, not so much.
The cabin of the old ship wasn't big, nor was it bright. The only lighting equipment was a handful of tiny kerosene lamps overhead, flickering periodically with the sway of the ship.
The sky grew darker outside, and the number of people kept increasing. Finally, it stopped at the count of fourteen.
Everybody assessed their surroundings as they met up with their own teammates. The crowd seemed to be very quickly divided up into teams, with the handful of newbies left out. Without much choice, they had to make up their own team.
Just as the crowd grew noisy with discussion, a middle-aged man came in from the outside. His get-up looked a bit like a medieval pirate, and he carried a swaying kerosene lamp in his hand.
"Welcome to the Black Skerry," the man spoke. His voice sounded quite raspy, like the effects of long-term drinking or smoking had brought about irreversible damage to his throat. "I hope you all have a good time here."
After he finished saying this, he laughed like a maniac, and his high-pitched laughter, like fingernails scoring a chalkboard, sent goosebumps rising along the skin.
"In ten days, the Black Skerry will reach harbor," the man said. "Our voyage will end then, so please enjoy our wonderful time together."
Just as he finished speaking, somebody rushed out of the cabin. Lin Qiushi first thought that this person had gotten scared, but not long after, there came from outside the sound of violent vomiting—it seemed that some unlucky bastard was seasick.
"Where in the world are we?" The sobbing young girl had also been scared by the man before her, and she spoke: "are we filming a show? I'm really, really scared, can I please quit? I don't want to play anymore, I'm begging you…"
The man completely ignored her. He merely went on watching the crowd with a cool gaze.
The girl seemed to want to go up and take hold of him, but when she got to his side she suddenly stopped, face draining of all color. She then backed up a few steps, as if she'd seen something truly terrifying.
Lin Qiushi's eyesight wasn't as good as Ruan Nanzhu's, and due to the dim lights he didn't see a thing. It was Ruan Nanzhu who quietly explained the situation to him:
"That person's covered in some sort of black insect."
Gu Longming shivered.
"Is he dead or alive then?"
"I don't know," Ruan Nanzhu said. "Doesn't look too good either way."
Under typical circumstances, only the NPC who provided them with the key information was somewhat normal. If even that NPC wasn't normal, then there really weren't any normal people to speak of.
Lin Qiushi hadn't imagined that their door this time would be an ancient ship. And by the looks of things, the time limit was ten days.
"Come along, I'll take to to where you'll sleep," the man said. "It'll be dark soon…and it'll rain."
After this, he began that manic laugh again, and the group was even more disturbed.
The man brought them to the guest cabins and began divvying up the rooms.
Most of the rooms here were doubles, with a rare triple here and there. At first, Lin Qiushi was assigned a double, but Gu Longming brazenly went and found a man to switch room numbers with, strong-arming them into a triple.
"You'll bargain for even this sort of thing?" Lin Qiushi shot Gu Longming a look of admiration.
"Well I'm scared of dying, aren't I…" Gu Longming said. He didn't want to sleep alone, and though it wasn't quite right to be a third wheel, being a third wheel was much better than being dead.
Ruan Nanzhu’s smile was inscrutable.
"That's fair."
They'd planned to inspect the entire ship, but because the night was already so dark, moving about outside would be too dangerous. They would rest first, and wait until tomorrow to make plans.
And so the three got their key and went to their room, getting into bed after quickly washing up.
When Ruan Nanzhu went to change, Gu Longming took the opportunity to poke at Lin Qiushi, whispering, "yo, not cool man, how come you didn't tell me you had such a pretty girlfriend?"
Lin Qiushi answered a vague: "…mh."
"Oh she's stunning," Gu Longming said with a sigh. "If I had a girlfriend like that I'd want to stick around her every day too."
As he spoke, he looked to Lin Qiushi with an expression that was both envy and admiration.
Lin Qiushi watched him back and wondered how he would react if he knew Ruan Nanzhu was drag queen. Of course, it wasn't something he could tell Gu Longming now. Gu Longming was not yet part of Obsidian, and the fact that Ruan Nanzhu wore drag was Obsidian's biggest most vital secret…
After Ruan Nanzhu got changed, he came back inside.
"What are you two talking about?"
"Nothing," Lin Qiushi answered in brief. "He said you were pretty."
Ruan Nanzhu replied with a meaningful oh.
Gu Longming: "…" Why did a chill suddenly go down his back?
The beds on the ship all emanated a damp smell—very uncomfortable for the people lying on top. At this point, the waves and wind were getting bigger, and even the sleeping quarters were beginning to rock. Lin Qiushi remembered that ridiculously seasick, endlessly vomiting pal of theirs from earlier and thought that that guy was pretty much done for.
The sky outside gradually darkened in entirety, leaving only the bellowing winds and the sound of waves beating against each other. With his eyes shut, Lin Qiushi grew drowsy—but before he could fall asleep, he was woken by a sudden crack of thunder. It was like lightning had struck right above their heads. With the loud boom, all three of them awoke in an instant.
After that, it was the pattering pour of rain. The rushing rain and the howling wind—they seemed on the verge of destroying everything.
Their quarters rocked even harder. Lin Qiushi sat up in his bed.
Through the window, he looked to the black evening outside. He saw, however, two illuminated lights. It seemed like the only light sources on deck were kerosene lamps, but how did these lamps stay so bright in the middle of a thunderstorm…? Just as Lin Qiushi wondered this, he suddenly felt that there was something off about those two lights, and Ruan Nanzhu, sitting behind him, spoke up quietly:
"Don't look anymore."
Lin Qiushi, "hm?"
"Those aren't lights," Ruan Nanzhu said. "Those are eyes."
A pair of yellow, inhuman eyes. The owner of the eyes spied through the darkness with malicious intent, as if a beast looking for its prey.
Lin Qiushi instantly looked away, and asked, "what is that thing?"
"I don't know, I can't tell," Ruan Nanzhu said. "The shape is humanoid, but it doesn't seem to be human."
Lin Qiushi's brows lightly furrowed, but by the time he looked out the window once more, the eyes were gone.
Thunder rumbled on and on, and that stench of ocean salt grew thicker and more cloying.
Ruan Nanzhu climbed into Lin Qiushi's bed, and holding each other, the two very quickly returned to sleep. However, the only bachelor present Gu Longming didn't have such luck. Lying beside Lin Qiushi, he stared with plaintive eyes, thinking that in the following days, he'd be fed enough dog food to bloat.
The rainstorm lasted until dawn, and though the rain let up, the weather did not turn any sunnier. Black storm clouds still hovered over the ship, and when the alarm rang, Lin Qiushi actually thought it was not yet morning. He checked the time, however, and saw that it was 8AM. It was just still dark outside.
"Good morning," Ruan Nanzhu greeted Lin Qiushi.
"Good morning. It's so dark outside today."
"It's probably going to keep raining," Ruan Nanzhu said. He walked out onto deck with Lin Qiushi and watched the black waters roil underneath the ship.
Looking up, they couldn't see any land, only the endless swath of sea. Only the old ship beneath their feet felt like any sort of reality.
This sort of isolating environment was easily taxing on the psyche. Even for Lin Qiushi, the scene before them was discomforting.
"Come on, let's go get breakfast," Gu Longming called to the two.
"He's pretty thick-skinned," Ruan Nanzhu commented after hearing Gu Longming's call.
"Yeah," Lin Qiushi said. "His nerves are petty good."
Inside the doors, you didn't have to be too smart, but you definitely had to be brave enough. Before terrifying situations, fright could make a person abandon a large part of their cognitive abilities. The smartest person could lack a strong heart and still do worse inside the door than the obtuse, oblivious Cheng Qianli.
The three went to the dining area and found there an atmosphere that could very well be called lifeless.
Lin Qiushi didn't know why at first. After he saw the menu, however, he couldn't help but also feel a touch of depression.
All the ship offered was fish. And it wasn't even fresh fish—Gu Longming poked at a dead-eyed staring head with his chopsticks and said, "is this thing even edible?"
It was disgusting just to look at.
"It looks gross," Lin Qiushi said. "Try a bit?"
Gu Longming took a bit of meat from the gills and gave it a taste. His expression twisted.
"Fuck, did they deduct the food budget for this door or what? It's disgusting. It's like they’ve had it outside for three days. You try it?"
Lin Qiushi, "oh no, no thank you."
Gu Longming: "…"
The breakfast served in the dining room was, for the most part, stale fish. Aside from that there was only flavorless noddles and peas. The environment had already been vicious enough, but the food in front of them now was salt on top of the wound.
But Lin Qiushi and Ruan Nanzhu didn't care at all. After seeing the inedible breakfast they snuck back to their room and fetched from their bags the food they'd prepared.
Gu Longming watched as they pulled out a bottle of chili sauce, eyes bulging out.
"You guys even brought Lao Gan Ma? Did you come here to picnic?"
"Want some?" Lin Qiushi drizzled the Lao Gan Ma over some noodles they'd brought out of the dining hall.
"Yeah yeah yeah. More please." Gu Longming's expression was shameless.
With breakfast finally done, they got ready to search the ship.
There were a total of three decks in the ship, constructed a bit like the sailing vessels of the great nautical era of the Middle Ages. It was extremely old, was all, covered in the marks and traces of times past.
Beside that NPC, they didn't see any other crew members on deck; there was likely only the one NPC on the entire ship. Wait for the ship's return was the mission the NPC left for them this time, but Lin Qiushi had thorough reason to believe that if they couldn't find the door in ten day's time, this voyage of theirs would cycle back and repeat—and they'd experience the ten days all over again.
When Lin Qiushi climbed onto the second deck, he heard a sort of thumping sound, and was uncertain if Ruan Nanzhu and Gu Longming had heard it as well. So he asked, "did you guys hear that?"
"What?" Gu Longming didn't seem to have heard.
Ruan Nanzhu said, "I think I did, but not very clearly."
"I think it came from the corner…" Lin Qiushi followed the sound forward. "Let's go see."
But before they could get close, Lin Qiushi was hit with a thick, fishy stench. It was disgusting and nauseating to smell; fortunately Cheng Yixie wasn't here, or he might have passed out immediately upon smelling it.
The source of the sound and smell was the same room, and they were close enough now that both Gu Longming and Ruan Nanzhu could hear the thumping noise as well.
The three of them slowed their steps, and through the window, looked into the room.
It was a kitchen with knives and other tools hanging inside. The most eye-catching thing, however, was the dense masses of dead fish hung up on hooks all over the sides.
A person in an apron stood in the center of the room with their back towards them and head down. They were chopping something. After some observation, Gu Longming almost gagged, and said, "don't tell me he's making our breakfast—"
Ruan Nanzhu was very calm.
"It's possible."
Gu Longming did gag. He'd even had a bite of that fish that morning.
Lin Qiushi gave Gu Longming a sympathetic pat on the shoulder.
This person in the kitchen, however, was the second living NPC they'd found on the ship.
The three of them stood watching in the kitchen doorway for a while, and saw that besides chopping fish, this person didn't do much of anything else. And so they decided to go see elsewhere first.
Very soon, they discovered a more peculiar room. This room was locked, and curtains were drawn over the window. It was quiet inside, but they could still smell that thick waft of stale fish. Lin Qiushi initially thought the smell had clung to them from the kitchen, but after a careful sniff, found that it was coming from inside the room.
"Do we go in?" Gu Longming was pressed against the window trying to look in, but he could see nothing.
Ruan Nanzhu gave this some thought, before saying, "let's try," and getting out a hairpin to pick the lock.
Watching his adept motions, Gu Longming's eyes widened. Then Gu Longming glanced at Lin Qiushi.
"Is this…is this a basic skillset that y'all come with?"
Lin Qiushi grinned as he joked, "yeah. You have to learn to pick locks if you want to join us."
As he said this, there was a click. Ruan Nanzhu really got the lock open. But oddly enough, after he unlocked the door and gave it a push, he found that though the door lock was undone, there was another lock hanging on the inside. The chain on that lock held the door closed, and they could at most manage a crack—it couldn't be opened at all.
"Wait," Lin Qiushi suddenly said, stopping Ruan Nanzhu from going up and pushing the door. "Stop for a second. There's movement inside."
Ruan Nanzhu halted, and just as he stopped mid-step, a hand, sharp-nailed and covered in scales, reached out of the door. And through that crack in the door, a pair of yellow eyes looked out, peering at the world outside with malicious intent.
Translator’s Note:
The name of the ship could more simply be translated as “Black Reef,” but “Black Skerry” sounds more like a ship name? Let me know if you think otherwise (or know if it’s a specific reference to something).
Lao Gan Ma is a brand of **hot sauce (edited: 7/26), as you can probably tell from context. The original next never uses “hot sauce” though, and just call it Lao Gan Ma in both the prose and the dialogue.

Bedside Manner (Din Djarin x Reader)
You and Din get stuck on an ice planet and he offers to keep you warm, so you cuddle and then you accidentally give him a boner and then you admit your feelings for each other????????
Rating: Mature (18+) Words: 1.2k Pairing: F/M (Originally posted on AO3 - I’m new to Tumblr btw, lmk if there’s anything I’m missing on this post and feel free to say hi!)
“We’ll have to wait till there’s light. We’ll freeze if we try right now,” says the Mandalorian upon examining the damage to the Razor Crest. The gash in the side has left the hull exposed to the elements of this ice planet. A biting chill blows through the metal ship as the warmth quickly disappears.
“Are you sure we can fix it?” you ask, teeth chattering. “We don’t even have power.”
“The Crest has seen worse,” he says calmly. “We can probably patch her up enough to get to the nearest post, but we might as well try to get comfortable for the next few hours.”
You grab a thick blanket and settle against the wall, across from Din who does the same.
“You gonna be okay?” he asks after a moment.
“Yeah,” you breathe, unconfident in your response, trying to wrap yourself thoroughly. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight,” he returns with a slight nod of his helmet.
————————————————————————
You don’t know if you ever truly fell asleep. You lie there for as long as you can, for what seems like hours, trying your hardest to remain unconscious. The cold is torturous, leaving you shivering and numb in your hands and feet.
A rustling startles your eyes open.
“I can see the cold on your skin, girl.”
You find the Mandalorian is kneeling at your side. You’re quiet, trying to collect yourself, as you sit up straight. “My body is the warmest thing on this ship,” he continues. “Would you like me to lie down with you?”
Perhaps your brain had slowed down, or perhaps it was the shock of the proposal coming from Din Djarin; either way you think you misheard. “Wh.. what?”
“We need to get you warmed up. Let me do this for you,” he insists. “I’d hate to see you lose any toes.”
You smile softly at the Mandalorian’s bedside manner. “You—you’re going to take off your armor?” you stammer.
“Yes,” says Din, as he helps you to your feet. “And my suit. You should take off what you are comfortable with as well. We’ll lock ourselves in the sleeping compartment, I’ll bundle us up together and… we’ll be warm.”
You nod in agreement. The Mandalorian moves to collect the couple of blankets he has, spreading them out on his cot. You’re frozen as the Mandalorian removes his beskar. He places it carefully in the net above the cot before unfastening his heavy suit.
You strip down to your undergarments with caution, wildly aware of being nearly nude in the presence of the man you were painfully in love with. But he doesn’t gawk or say anything. Instead he turns away respectfully, wearing only his helmet and a pair of plain boxers, and climbs into bed.
Your body shudders at the intense chill.
“Come. Come quickly,” Din says, offering a hand. You join him eagerly, laying down at his side under the covers. Din closes the compartment door.
“I’m going to take off my helmet. Can I trust you to close your eyes for a moment?” he asks.
“Of course.”
Butterflies flood your stomach, unsure of what was to come. But you don’t question it and close your eyes.
“Open.”
His voice is crystal clear... so human. You open your eyes to find yourselves submersed in pitch darkness, with the Mandalorian closer to you than ever before.
“Put your back into my chest,” says Din. You lean back into him tentatively. He’s warm. Surely he wasn’t only warm in comparison to your frozen skin… no, he had that kind of radiating heat that comes from within. You shudder as you sink into him, relieving the chill in your spine.
“There you go, that’s it, mesh’la,” he soothes. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up at the sensation of his breath on your ear. Built arms wrap around you, settling your head on his bicep, as his warm hands grip your icy ones.
“You can warm your feet against my legs,” he continues, aware that you were too timid to ask for anything beyond what’s offered. “It’s okay.” Your feet brush along his shins tentatively. Hair scratches against your soft skin and his knees come into the backs of yours, entwining your legs.
Though you continue to shiver slightly, the relief is great.
“Is that better?” he asks.
“Yeah. You’re so warm,” you sigh. “Thank you…”
Din’s thumb begins tracing a small circle around the back of your hand. “I couldn’t let my girl go cold on me,” he says softly.
My girl.
You could lie here in his arms forever. You knew the Mandalorian was gentle in nature, but this was such a beautiful gesture, done with such care.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were so cold?” he asks.
“I don’t know, I thought I would be fine,” you answer, embarrassed. “I didn’t want to bother you either.”
“You’re not a bother to me, cyar’ika.”
You smile softly, intrigued by the nickname, as you close your eyes to sleep.
-----------------------------------------------------
A few minutes pass.
“You’re shaking again,” Din says in your ear.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know why I’m still so cold,” you respond, turning around to burrow your face into his chest.
“Do you trust me?”
“Yes...” you breathe.
“Then I’m going to try something else.”
The Mandalorian rolls you on your back and moves with you, pressing nearly his full weight on you. You understand why; you were absolutely sealed in his warmth.
“Oh, Din,” you sigh in relief, sneaking your arms around the contours of his back. He holds you tightly.
“You’re like ice, sweet girl. Wrap your legs around me.”
You do so, nearly whimpering at the satisfaction of being completely enveloped by the Mandalorian.
How many times had you yearned for this closeness? Your hand comes up to his cheek without thinking; you freeze, fearing you had done something wrong. But his face leans into it, turning to a place quick kiss into the flesh of your palm under your thumb. “You’re going to be okay,” he whispers.
Din nestles in and relaxes his body. Your face warms against his neck and the sensation of your combined breathing lulls you into a calm. As you settle in, your legs adjust around his. Your foot moves up his leg slightly, arching your back to adjust, and your hand moves to rest around his back and keep him close. Contently, you throw your head back against the pillow.
“I— I, uh… sorry,” Din grumbles a few seconds later, lifting his head up.
“What?” You shift slightly, confused, and—
Oh. That got him stiff.
Thankful for the darkness, your jaw drops and your cheeks flush at the feeling. “Din, I understand, it’s really okay,” you’re quick to say.
“It’s just that—”
You shush him, in need of no explanation, and steady his face with your hands. “It’s okay!” you laugh quietly. “It’s okay.” The embarrassed heat retreats from his face. “Are you sure you’re comfortable like this?”
“Yes,” he laughs softly.
A dead silence fills the air. “Din?”
“Hm?”
“You’re the kindest man I have ever met.”
Din sighs, bringing his hand up to cup the side of your face. He doesn’t say anything for a moment and runs his thumb over your soft skin. “You don’t know the things I’ve done, sweet girl.”
You shake your head. “It doesn’t matter to me... I love you.”
Warm lips press against yours gently in darkness.
“Do you know how much I have always loved you, cyar’ika?”

♡ prompt: "falling in love with her wasn't apart of my plan but I'm not mad if it happens."
♡ pairing: leo valdez x latina, fem! reader
♡ note: not checked for grammar or spelling mistakes / my schedule is going to become more sporadic starting this week :/ but also, writing for Leo is my ultimate favorite thing to do bc I'M MEXICAN AND SO IS HE AND I JUST GET TO UNLEASH ALL MY MEXICANESS INTO ONE FANFIC.
being the daughter of Nemesis, it wasn't unusual to see you messing with the Hermes cabin....a lot. your partners in crime were the Stoll brothers. all the meanwhile, everyone who saw the three of you together knew to book it. it usually meant that all of you pulled a prank and they were terrified to know which cabin it was that got shit end of the stick.
it was usually ended up being the Demeter kids considering they were so easy to prank. you swore that Demeter was going to bite you in the ass one day for how much you messed with her kids but you couldn't lie, they were so easily prankable that it was hard not to do it.
"I'M GOING TO HURT YOU!" you heard someone scream as you and the Stoll brothers ran away from the cabin. the three of you booked it until you saw them stop and ultimately give up, "NO YOU WON'T!" you yelled back jokingly before you accidentally ran into someone.
you heard the chuckles of Travis and Connor as you looked up, "sorry Leo, didn't see you there," you murmured. he gave you his hand, helping you up as Travis and Connor started mocking you, "it's okay but be careful! wouldn't want your beautiful face to get all messed up," your eyes widened, right alongside's Travis who started going into hysterics.
"thanks Leo, at least someone knows how to treat a woman," you poked back to Travis who immediately stood quiet. Leo laughed, "no problem but here, you got some grease on your cheek," he said, seeing the slash of it on your face. he pulled his sleeve out a bit and tried wiping it off, "uh, you kinda made it worse," Connor inquired.
Travis smacked his brother, sensing that this was not the time to make a joke. he quickly dragged himself along with Connor away as you got left with Leo, "I still think you look pretty," he tried to rationalize. he knew the story behind you and knew if you managed to take what he did the wrong way, he would be at the receiving end of a prank and no one ever wanted to be involved in a prank that had your name attached with Travis and Connor.
"have a mirror in your bunker? don't really feel like walking all the way to my cabin to clean it off," you admitted. Leo nodded excitedly, practically grabbing your hand and dragging you away, "course I do. gotta see this perfect face somehow," you giggled at his comment making Leo proud that he wasn't scaring you off yet.
the bunker from where you were originally wasn't too far but when you stepped in, you couldn't help but stand at the doorway, stunned at the organized mess he had inside. "you build a lot, don't you?" you asked. Leo saw the way stared mesmerized at the unfinished project, "yeah, half of these aren't done yet and I haven't even started on those yet but that's what happen when you're the son of Hephaestus," he groaned.
you saw the mirror that was on the wall and wiped it away with a clean rag. as you finished up, you heard music playing lowly throughout the bunker.
"is that....Banda MS?" you asked, whipping your head around to get a clear answer. Leo and you both stared at each other in complete shock, "NO WAY!" you both screamed. you immediately felt a tug at Leo, getting some sense of familiarity from him, "my dad used to blast this song all the time as a kid!" you exclaimed happily.
Leo didn't respond as he was still too much in shock to process what was going on. he hadn't met anyone who ever recognized the music he listened to when he worked. it's one of the memories he had with his mom was that she blared this music when they used to work on things together, "my mom did too," he replied. you found the tiny remote and turned it up as you sat in shock.
"sorry but I really haven't heard this music play in years, it brings back so many memories of my dad," you confessed, "holy Hera I might start crying," you laughed, trying not to cry in the process.
"Me gustas, te gusto, pa qué nos hacemos? te llevo la banda y nos amanecemos. seré detallista, me encantas la neta, te lleno de rosas mis dos camionetas. no es por presumir, pero soy buena opción, bonita pareja haríamos tú y yo, Piénsalo."
you sang out the lyrics right alongside Leo as the two of you immediately felt in your own little world. Jason, who was passing by Bunker Nine with Piper, poked his head in when he heard Leo's singing voice.
"no way," he whispered to Piper who managed to jump over her boyfriend to poke her head inside, "a girl is in his bunker? holy Hera," she murmured to him as Jason stared at his best friend in pride. Jason knew if anyone deserved a girlfriend, it was Leo. despite the front Leo put up constantly, he knew Leo craved love from a significant other so to see you inside of the bunker, not only singing to music in Spanish but to actually understand Leo from a side no one else could made Jason proud of him.
"I have a bunch of music on my iPod I always play in my cabin since Damien is hardly inside, it doesn't really bother anyone," you mentioned as you took it out. Leo quickly put the iPod on the adapter and played the first song which happened to be 'Se Amerita' by Junior H, "I usually played it around Jason and the others but they didn't really understand so it didn't really bother them."
you heard your name being yelled by Travis from across the camp making you sigh. Leo felt himself deflate, realizing that you were leaving, "talk to ya later? I'm pretty sure one of those got caught in a prank and are going to use me as an escape tactic," you murmured, jumping off of the stool.
"bye Amor!" you turned around, not expecting the nickname so suddenly, "goodbye Valdez," you replied, giving him a wink.
you walked out of his bunker, not noticing Jason or Piper who were hiding on the side as you sped off to Travis. Jason and Piper walked in, giving Leo the biggest shit eating grin they had ever had on their faces, "well, well, well, what was that?" Piper asked, "flirting it up with the daughter of Nemesis are we?" Jason added on.
"shut up, it wasn't even-," Leo looked to Jason who immediately told him to cut the shit, "falling in love with her wasn't apart of my plan but I'm not mad if it happens," he confessed, slamming the tool on the table and running his hands through his brown hair.
Piper couldn't believe her ears. Leo had said he had fallen in love multiple times over multiple women he had met but this one felt real. it felt almost raw.
"you didn't tell her that, did you?" Jason asked, now in a kind of panic. Leo shook his head no, "okay good but honestly, it's really surprising. everyone in the camp kind of assume her and Travis had a thing considering how much time they spend with each other," Piper said out loud.
bingo.
that was the thing that was throwing Leo off. he saw the way you acted around Travis. it wasn't the way you were around Connor. you seemed really close to Travis. the two of you were secretive with each other. just know, he heard Travis calling for you and although you were reluctant to go, he felt some kind of competition with the older Stoll brother.
"no, I don't think they see each other that way, they have more of a sibling relationship if I have to be honest," thank you Jason for being the voice of reason, Leo thought. he stood up and stretched himself, "well, if the Gods want us together then so be it but if they don't...I'm going to make em," he joked.
the following morning was thankfully a Saturday. no training was mandatory and it gave everyone a chance to sleep in. Leo tended to be a late sleeper on these days but as he was getting up to go to the mess hall, he heard your laughs from the campfire area. you were sitting with Travis, looking at a notebook with something written inside it as Travis let out another laugh.
Leo felt himself getting slightly jealous as he went for his late morning snack. you had given a bright smile, one that made him melt on the inside, and a wave before going back to talking to Travis. he hadn't seen Connor around so he figured that it was just the two of you which didn't make his jealousy dim down any less.
you had ditched the plans of pranking the Ares cabin with Travis as he wiggled his eyebrows, joking that you were replacing him with Leo.
"hey Leo, what're you up to?" you asked, scaring him a bit. he shrugged, showing you the snacks in his hands, "late sleeper, huh?" you asked. you could sense the slightly different mood Leo was in, in comparison to yesterday, "well, if you need any help with anything, I'll be free all day," you mentioned, hoping he'd invite you to maybe help him in some kind of project.
Leo nodded, not saying anything back before heading back to his bunker. he didn't know if it was just his heart playing with him but the way you were around Travis made him irrationally angry. it was as if only he could be that way around you. Leo knew one of his downsides as a person was being extremely clingy and having a bit too much faith in someone but he was hoping that if he placed all his marbles into a bowl that maybe you'd reciprocate the feelings he got for you just as quickly as he did.
"what're you doing in here trapped?" Jason asked, a little later in the day. Leo continued working on his useless project as he didn't respond, "dude, are you listening? I would think you'd be with ( your name ), trying to ask her out and all," Jason reiterated.
Leo slammed his nail gun down on the table, frightening Jason.
"I saw her with Travis earlier, giggling and laughing with him so I figured that maybe Piper was right and that they like each other," he admitted, frustration evident in his voice, "gods you're in idiot," Jason screamed to Leo as it was Leo's turn to be left in confusion.
Jason sat down on the wooden chair in annoyance.
"( your name ) is currently by herself by lake and you're in here moping around because of a scenario you made in your head?" he practically yelled. Leo was about to speak up when Jason cut him off again, "I told you already, she is like Travis' sister! what're you not getting? I heard what she told you this morning and now she's alone when she could be in here with you!" he yelled, shaking Leo's shoulders.
Leo took a step back, letting what Jason was telling him sink in. once it finally processed, he put his tool down and took his belt off, "think she'll be down for me to join her?" Leo asked him. Jason nodded yes, "go to her you idiot! it's about time you found your soulmate and you're about to ruin it!"
Jason remained in the cabin as Leo quickly walked out. he went to the place where Jason had told him you were currently at and thankfully, you were still there. you were poking the water with a stick before chucking a large rock inside of it. something Percy probably would've yelled at you for.
"what're you doing here alone?" he asked, walking up behind you. you instantly perked up, "I'm bored and didn't really have anything to do today so I usually go to the lake to throw rocks," you replied as Leo got comfortable next to you, "I thought you'd be working on some project right now."
Leo shook his head, "figured you'd probably want to help me start a new project. I don't know how great the daughters of Nemesis are at building things but I can imagine someone as gorgeous and smart as you can be of help," he flirted as he noticed the flustered reaction.
"me vas a matar estupido," you joked, pushing him playfully. Leo shook his head, "how can I kill me reina? it would be really stupid of me." you didn't bother to reply as you let out a flustered laugh.
Leo took in the situation as you grew quiet. the slight Long Island breeze made your hair get pushed back as Leo thanked his lucky stars. Leo knew he went through hell and back. literally. and maybe it was finally time he got what he deserved in return.
never did he think he would be at the receiving end of good karma. his life until recently had put him through trials and tribulations that he didn't think he'd make it out of but thankfully, he did and when he did, he figured that's when the God's placed you in his life. the gorgeous daughter of Nemesis.
"well, let's get crackin' partner," you said getting up. Leo nodded, grabbing your wrist and practically dragging you away to his bunker, "whatever you say reina," he replied, finding comfort in the nickname he gave you.

Diabolik Lovers DARK FATE ー Shuu Maniac [07]
Tumblr media
ー The scene starts in the entrance hall
Yui: S-Shuu-san...!? What is this about!?
Shuu: I have no explanation.
*Meooow*
Yui: ( Never did I imagine Shuu-san would bring home a cat... )
( The combination of these two...Somehow feels a little strange. )
*Meooow*
Yui: What a cutie. Where did this little guy come from? (1)
Shuu: How should I know? He approached me while I was napping in the park.
He had the nerve to climb on top of me while I was sleeping...And in the end, followed me all the way back home.
Yui: So you found him at the park? He doesn’t have a collar either, so I wonder if he’s a stray...?
Shuu: He must have a few screws loose to approach a Vampire. Animals generally know based on instinct, no?
Selection
→ He might have felt you are a kind person (♡)
Yui: Don’t you think his instincts told him that you’re a good person?
Shuu: Ridiculous. In that case, an animal’s instinct can’t be trusted either.
Yui: I think it was spot on.
Shuu: You’re on a whole different level. (2) Didn’t you go through hell and back? Where is this ‘nice Vampire’ you speak of?
Yui: Yes. Right in front of my eyes.
Shuu: ...
...Talking to you always throws me off, it’s annoying.
Yui: ( Fufu, he’s blushing. )
→ He might have thought you were his parent
Yui: He might have mistaken you for his parent.
Shuu: In that case, he’s an idiot on the same level as you. Seems like you can’t tell the difference between a human and a cat either.
Yui: ( Uu, I guess I upset him... )
*Meooow*
Yui: Uhm...What are we going to do with him?
Shuu: I’ll leave that up to you. Do as you please.
Yui: So we can keep him?
Shuu: I don’t see why not. It’d be a pain to drive him away at this point.
Yui: Thank you very much!
Ah, then from today onwards, our family has been increased from two to three.
Shuu: ...So simple-minded.
Yui: Right, if we’ll keep him, we have to give the little guy a name...What would be a nice one? What do you think, Shuu-san?
Shuu: ‘Cat’.
Yui: ...
Shuu: It’s a great name, no? Short and simple. (2)
Yui: He’s our family now so please take it seriously!
Shuu: Then you can come up with something. I’m honestly fine with any name.
Yui: Gosh...I’ll decide it on my own then, okay?
*Meooow*
Yui: ( Hm....It’s an orange tabby so... )
...Ah.
Shuu: Thought of one?
Yui: No...But now that I get a better look, he’s a little similar to you, don’t you think?
Shuu: ...Are your eyes still working fine?
Yui: I-I mean, the color of his fur, for example...! See, don’t you think it looks alike?
Shuu: Not at all.
Yui: ( I guess it doesn’t...? )
*Meooow*
Shuu: ...
...Ririe.
Yui: Eh?
Shuu: His name.
Yui: Ririe...
Shuu: You can change it if you don’t like it.
Yui: No, I think it’s great!
*Meooow*
Yui: Fufu, seems like this little guy likes it as well. It’s decided then. Your name is now Ririe.
But Shuu-san, where did this suddenly come from?
Shuu: ...He seemed to be wanting to join our family as well.
Yui: ...? What do you mean?
Shuu: Who knows. ...Dinner’s ready, right?
Yui: Ah, yes. Can he join us as well?
Shuu: Be my guest.
ー Shuu leaves towards the kitchen
Yui: ( ...I didn’t think our family would grow. )
You were lucky to be picked up by such a nice guy, Ririe.
*Meooow*
Yui: Fufu, I look forward to spending time with you~
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to the living room
Yui: ...Just like that...Now keep still, okay...?
*Rustle*
Yui: ...There we go! You’re ready to go, Ririe!
*Ring*
Yui: I had to hastily put something together but...Yeah, the collar suits you!
*Meooow*
Yui: Please endure it until we can buy you a proper one, okay?
That being said, you ate quite a bit. Were you hungry?
*Meooow*
Yui: Liking meat more than fish, you’re honestly starting to resemble Shuu-san more and more. Right, Shuu-saーー
Shuu: ...
Yui: ( He already fell asleep! He was awake just now though... )
*Meooow*
Yui: Fufu, you look sleepy too. I guess it’s because you stuffed your belly.
*Thud*
Yui: Ririe? Where are you going?
( Ah... )
*Rustle rustle*
Yui: ( ...He crawled on top of Shuu-san again. He must really be attached to him. )
( Fufu, their love for napping is another thing they have in common. )
Shuu: Nn...
Yui: ( Ah...Ririe nestled inside Shuu-san’s arms... )
( I might be a little envious... )
( ...Guess I’ll go do the dishes. I’d feel bad for waking the two of theーー )
Shuu: ーー You won’t join us?
Yui: Eh?
*Rustle*
Yui: Wah...!?
Tumblr media
Shuu: This spot originally belonged to you, no? Are you willing to give it up?
Yui: Shuu-san! Y-You were awake...!?
Shuu: The little one woke me up.
And? Are you fine with it? With some cat taking me away from you?
Yui: W-What are you saying? I’m not really...
Shuu: Jealous? Perhaps you should go take a look at yourself in the mirror?
Your eyes are overflowing with want.
Yui: ...Shuu-san!
Shuu: Don’t shout. You don’t mind waking him up?
Yui: N-No fair...
Shuu: Haha...You never grow tired of being stubborn, do you?
Why not be honest? That you want me to hold you (3) as well.
Yui: Ho...!
Shuu: You’re too loud.
Yui: ...I mean, I was a little envious.
But I didn’t actually feel jealous. I don’t want to disturb Ririe while he’s sleeping soundly...
Shuu: Oh? How boring. If you were jealous, I would have been able to do all sorts of things.
Yui: ( All sorts of things...!? )
Tumblr media
–> Little black roses will appear on certain CGs. If you click on them, you get an extra line of dialogue.
“...Come on. If you want to be by my side more, you should scoot a little closer. Right now, I’ll be so kind to care for both of you.”
“Haah...He willingly keeps approaching me like this...Don’t you think this cat is just as much of a fool as you are?”
Yui: ...Seems like you’ve grown attached to this little guy.
Shuu: He’s a pain in the ass. (4)
Yui: Please don’t say that. ...Look, he looks so peaceful while sleeping.
Shuu: Feeling at ease by a Vampire’s side, huh? ...How ridiculous.
Yui: I can understand. I too...can relax when you’re by my side.
Shuu: ...Someday you will both regret it.
Yui: I don’t mind. ...As long as I can be with you.
Shuu: ...You foolish woman.
*Rustle*
Yui: Ah...Wait, Shuu-san.
Shuu: You won’t complain about just a kiss, right?
Yui: But if you move, you’ll wake up Ririe.
Shuu: ...He sure chose a troublesome place to sleep on.
Haah...Guess I have no other choice but to just nap then.
Yui: Fufu, please do that.
Shuu: Oi, Yui. You stay here too.
Family sleeps together, no?
Yui: ...Yes.
Shuu-san, Ririe. ...Goodnight.
ー The scene shifts to the outside of the Mukami manor
???: ーー I finally found you.
Shin: Right when I thought the manor was empty despite its smell of Vampires...
Haha, so this is where you’ve been hiding, huh?
Don’t think you can get away from me. Right...Future king?
Monologue
While listening to Shuu-san and Ririe breathing softly in their sleep,
I think to myself,
that this is surely what having a family feels like.
Even if we are not blood-related,
nor belong to the same species (種族).
From the bottom of my heart,
I considered us to be a true family at that exact moment.
I was able to feel that way, because I was simply so happy (幸せ).
ーー TO BE CONTINUED ーー
Translation notes
(1) The Japanese language has the luxury of not having to specify pronouns so they don’t have to worry about giving the cat a gender. However, I feel like in English it feels better to either assign a pet as a ‘him’ or ‘her’. I don’t think the game ever tells us, but since Yui keeps on comparing Shuu to the cat later on, it felt most fitting to also refer to the cat as a ‘he’. Furthermore, it is an orange tabby which are predominantly male, I believe.
(2) While おめでたい or ‘omedetai’ might seem like a compliment, it is often used in a sarcastic/ironic way and can be used to mock someone for being gullible, stupid, etc.
(3) Literally he says ‘easy to call/say and easy to understand’.
(4) 抱く or ‘daku’ can mean ‘to embrace’ or ‘to have sex/to be intimate’. Usually I would suspect the boys of implying the latter, but since there’s a comparison being made with the cat here, I do think it might just genuinely be ‘to hold’ here. xD
(5) いい迷惑 or ‘ii meiwaku’ literally means ‘a good bother’, which is obviously meant to be sarcastic.

Meet Joe Black
I’ve watched this movie a couple times now. To a detriment really. Or “perhaps” a detriment, lol. I’m not really sure...
Anyway, I bring that up to say it’s an interesting one. At least I think so. I’ve watched it knowing there’s a ton of people who don’t like it and/or think it’s slow and brooding.
I guess it is.
I’m no expert on these things.
Not yet at least lol.
Maybe one day...
But I don’t think that day is today.
Anyway. Moving on...
I guess to the privilege and understanding of scaling this film to your average classic romance film — it’s nothing like, say, a film like Casablanca or let’s say The Notebook or, even let’s weirdly say, I don’t know — On the Waterfront.
That to push the specific point of: this film is 3 hours for a reason. It’s complex. It’s contemplative. It’s mystic beyond words. And it’s uncontrollably introspective. That’s just what it is at it’s raw core. Take it or leave it.
Anyway, perhaps it’s introspective most in like, a scary, uncomfortable way maybe lol. Maybe. And that’s okay really — I think, lol. Like I said, lol — I’m not at ALL an expert on these things. But I don’t know; I think this film is a sensitive breath of fresh air.
Take a moment to understand that this movie is NOT about Joe Black. It’s not even about how Joe Black’s presence is effecting the people he’s interacting with.
This is film is about people and most of all, it’s about the things they don’t say to each other — especially behind each other’s backs. This movie is about the lies we tell.
I say that because every single character in this movie won’t admit how they really feel or own up to who they really are. They never tell the truth about what’s really going on until it’s too late — and even then, that’s not enough. Because like I said, the film is NOT about truth; it’s about lies. Everyone in every single one of these scenes lies to someone else to protect either their own ego or to avoid bruising someone else’s. Even Joe f*cking Black.
So much so, that perhaps, there’s an argument to be made that no one in the film changes fundamentally at all. And even THAT, would still be okay lol. The only difference that happens is everyone finally takes the time to listen to each other’s motives and honest hearts for the first time in forever. Bad or good. They hear or see the truth finally and accept things as they really are and maybe especially, have been. Joe kickstarts this process a little bit, but even then, everything that happens in this film apparently was going to happen regardless. Whether everyone in it would have been comfortable accepting that is probably more up in the air and in question to debate — at least to me.
As Joe tells the elder Islands woman earlier in the film — he really doesn’t have control over people’s fates. They often complain to him and curse him because they think he has that power — but he more often than not feels so power-LESS in taking souls to the next place — that he decided to take a break from his usual routines instead. That’s the whole reason he’s “vacationing” under the guise of this new character “Joe Black” alongside Bill Parrish’s demise. Joe is finally taking the time to have and find some peace; to examine his “function” and “purpose” in this universe he’s apparently supposed to be overlooking.
According to Joe, our “time” is set.
So really, the only thing Joe can control is how he FEELS about that being the case.
Much like everyone else in this film, Joe’s 3 hour journey is either accepting it happily or begrudgingly continuing to feel uncomfortable about it all.
So, again, to the point of everyone in this film lying to themselves and each other — Joe still lies about who he is or avoids telling everyone he’s Death incarnate lol.
At the end of the day, even when Susan catches a glimpse mentally or spiritually of who Joe truly is — the woman still doesn’t and can’t admit it out loud.
Susan didn’t fully love Drew. She knew that. She just didn’t know whether it was okay to FEEL okay about it or continue being uncomfortable with it. Bill knew it was time for him to step back from Parrish Communications anyway. He’s dying now. What he had to learn to accept was how this company that he so delicately fathered into inception would be able to run without him. Joke is, this was something Bill always worried and wondered about. He tells or at least implies this to Joe after one of the board meetings at the very least lol.
Bill obsessively has found himself concerned how his legacy would and will continue after his years, but has never acted on ensuring his values and morals would stay with the company SHOULD he ever be coup de tat’d.
The joke of “death and taxes” in the board room from Drew obviously culminates in the pun of Joe posing as an IRS Agent (another lie), but it’s all in service of getting Drew to truly understand how evil and disrespectful his actions toward Parrish Communications have been. Joe and Bill’s lie invoke him to speak about his true intentions to the Board — but in all reality, that’s something that should have been done from the start. Why? Because Drew openly admits and feels comfortable telling Quince his ulterior motives simply as power play and form of humiliation.
Quince in turn openly says he’ll expose Drew (which he ends up doing through encouragement by Joe — but in all reality — that fight and passion from Quince might have proceeded without Joe when you consider how much it was eating Quince up in the first place).
Really, Drew enjoyed doing what he was doing. It was wrong; but he liked it. Wealth and promotions were his own main personal values and concerns. But he wasn’t understanding the value of truth and honor that was embedded in the COMPANY he was trying to overturn. That’s why he lost Susan. That’s why he started to get on Bill’s bad side. That’s why the Board (regardless of agreeing with the invocation of the retirement article) was weary of Drew once he called the secret meeting.
We all tell lies.
But what we really should just get used to — is accepting the truth.
And if not that, we should learn to at least accept how we feel about those truths.
I don’t know.
Anyway, I say all that to say that the most honest person in this whole 3 hour film happens to be the elder black Islands lady from earlier in the hospital scene anyway lol.
Even the Joe that died at the top of this film was far more honest than anyone else proceeding him. So maybe both of those characters, original Joe and the elder woman.
But especially the elder woman...
Case and point, original Joe is who Susan mistakes and falls for anyway. And remember, both Original Joe and the Islands woman were people taken by the Death possessed Joe Black falsely, selfishly and uncomfortably before their “times.”
Don’t you remember...?
We know it was wrong that both Original Joe and the elder woman died because that’s why Joe gives Susan BACK her coffee shop boy and that’s why Death possessed Joe feels guilt after taking the Islands woman to “the next place.” Death Joe lied to Bill and said he would never and could never make exceptions — but he made one for the Island lady.
If Joe continuing to be childish and trying to play human wasn’t wrong — as the Islands lady put it — he wouldn’t have started acting out once he took her. Arguing with Bill, who started to have to continuously put Joe in his place for thinking he was some sort of giant who could play God. Because that’s the thing...
Joe isn’t God.
He’s just a piece of the puzzle beginning to not serve his natural purpose. And now? He’s throwing off the balance of himself and his surroundings selfishly by lying about it. He’s in the wrong. And now he knows it for sure by facing new negative human emotions he was never aware of before.
Sadness.
Loneliness.
Anger.
Love.
Guilt.
Joe can’t lie to himself the way he perhaps could without a human soul. Bill isn’t scared of him (which is unorthodox and intriguing to Joe) and neither is the Islands lady. For the first time in Joe Black’s existence — he’s beginning to understand who he is by admitting it to himself emotionally.
And like... isn’t that something we’re all supposed to be on this Earth doing?
Why is it that we don’t...?
...anyway...
I don’t know.
I watch this film for comfort these days. I’m still trying to figure out why, but I know part of it has to be because of how raw and honest it is.
Meet Joe Black is melancholy in an intriguing way too. But, outside the interesting performances and writing (at least, in my opinion), I’m very sensitive to enjoying how heartfelt the film is for trying to explore how we form and keep secrets.
I tend to enjoy sitting here watching a film like this for three hours. Has yet to be a moment I haven’t watched it all the way through if I catch it on television. Never matters how deep I happen to come by the film into the later or mid areas of it’s runtime either.
I just can’t seem to move out the room once it’s on the screen...
So, yeah. I could go into how I enjoy the performances or cinematography or writing. The lighting and ethereal-ness of it all too.
Could talk about what I don’t like as well...
But...
I feel all of those extra things would be WAY more tepid and uncouth in comparison to speaking strongly about how I feel that this film’s core makes me feel every so often. The vibe and soul of this film is something I feel far more comfortable codifying. At least right now maybe.
I’ll let you know in the future if that changes...
I really don’t know whether I want my love life to be like ones you see in Meet Joe Black. I’m not even sure if I feel comfortable lying in the insurmountable ways people do in Meet Joe Black either. But what I do know is that I’d feel far more comfortable in my life if I could be as transparent with people in and around my life — the way that Meet Joe Black would like it’s characters to try and be.
Anyway, stay safe out there or your mind might crack. I don’t want that to happen to you.
Hopefully, even if it does — and I’m really praying it won’t — there’ll be peanut butter somewhere in the vicinity for you.
And if there is peanut butter,
I hope you enjoy it...
...Thoroughly.

Can you do a weeding head canon for Satan pls? Please please please. Thank you so much for you time
Wedding Headcanons for Satan/Reader
wow four pages just like his birthright lol
*:゚*。⋆ฺ(*´◡`) I love thinking about weddings!! hope you like it! 🌺 kept it gender neutral as usual
EDIT: ltskjdlafskj tumblr didn’t save my FORMATTING (cries) hhhhh but hope it looks okay now!
where they get married
England, probably, if you chose a human place to get married at, but not in the city
i can imagine a cozy little cottage near a lake, set up a veranda and tables and chairs and there you have it; definitely outdoors
when they get married ( ie what time of day, what month and season etc. )
Early spring, late morning
very peaceful time of the year
If we want to get specific, most likely March when the breeze is cool and gentle and the foliage is lush and green
what traditions they include ( do they get married under a chuppah and crush a glass, garter toss, ‘something borrowed, something blue,’ etc. )
It probably sprinkles a little bit the morning of the wedding-- which is good luck, Satan reassures you
Throwing rice at the newlyweds over confetti-- mainly because it’s biodegradable and the wedding is outdoors
(had to search this up but) Satan, devious as he is, asks to do the garter toss
Basically, you wear a garter (that can match your wedding night lingerie wink wink) and he takes it off using his teeth or hands
Satan uses his hands-- but that doesn’t mean he can’t make it as intimate and alluring as he possibly can, making sure you’re aware of where his hands are on your leg as he shoots a coy look up at you just to see you blush
if you’re uncomfortable being that intimate in front of your family, no problem-- he can always just take it off later when you’re alone together
definitely hands or tosses the garter smugly at his brothers next time he sees them just to watch them scream
what their wedding cake looks like
small, four tiered cake decorated with pink peonies and light pink roses, accented by green leaves and gold
matches the bouquet!
….who smashes cake into whose face
you think and even plan it the moment the two of you decide to get married that it would be you
Satan surprises you by getting the jump and smushing cake onto yours first
gracefully lets you smash cake into his face too, a wide smile on his face the entire time
who proposed to who first
you think the cake is revenge for the fact you beat him to the punch and asked him to marry you first (after he says yes)
Satan was slightly miffed because he planned a whole getaway and everything to ask you
tells you as much with a pout as you laugh
gives you the ring he bought you and gifts you with something else during the getaway instead of the ring
who walks down the aisle and who waits at the altar ( or neither )
Satan refuses to be walked down the aisle by Lucifer, so he stubbornly stays at the altar (with Asmo as his best man and probably Lucifer as one of his groomsmen)-- which honestly, works for him
the flutter in his chest and the way you look incandescently beautiful as you walk down the aisle takes his breath away
loves the traditional wedding, Satan is a sucker for romantic cliches considering his proclivities for novels-- he's undoubtedly has thought of you in this very moment before a real proposal was ever on his mind the sap
what their wedding dresses / suits / other look like
one thing is for certain: Satan does not get to dress himself
And honestly neither should I but here it goes
Asmo and Lucifer help him choose the tuxedo to go with the color theme (green)
Grey, three-piece suit with an accented forest-green signature bowtie
White button-up shirt inside
Accented with a very, very pale pink rose pinned on the lapel of his suit
what their wedding colour scheme is and what sort of decor they have
Pastel and forest green with gold accents
Very nature-esque considering the outdoor location
Considering this happens on a grassy area, the walkway is scattered with flowers, the arch is decorated with peonies and roses
what flowers are in the bouquet ( if applicable. bonus: what do the flowers mean? )
Pink Peonies - represents honor, romance, beauty, and bashfulness
Pink roses - playful innocence/sensitivity
White daisies - true love, new beginning
Satan would have loved to thrown in an orange lily somewhere, but considering his color is GREEN, Asmo fought against it heavily -- but it would have symbolized a passion for life
Throw in some green in there too to match the theme and balance out the bouquet
what their vows are ( eg poetry, traditional, improvised etc. )
It's not that Satan can't be original, but it's more like he believes the traditional vows are still true and romantic to this day; definitely customizes it to fit him more
“With this ring, I give you my heart. I promise from this day forward, you shall not walk alone, may my heart be your shelter, and my arms be your home.”
He definitely does add the bits of poetry he's written about you-- highlighting the ways he has fallen for you and how you make him feel at home with you
Levi calls him a sap but he dries his tears with a tissue during the proceedings so his comment is invalid-- this scene is too perfectly anime to not love
he's an intellectual and a man of books: he's definitely got a way with words and spent weeks forming the best vow that encompasses everything he would ever want to say to you
if there was a day he’d say all the tender feelings he had for you, today was the day (out of the many days from thence on)
is surprised when you cry and secretly pleased-- makes (more) vows to tell you how much you mean to him more
if anyone’s late to the wedding
bye jk
wedding would be pretty small so doubtful there would be late comers (unless you have a large family and would like to invite them)
wouldn't roast anyone on your side for coming late; very understanding about it
if any of his side comes late, he'll say something to playfully tell them off or be exasperated but not surprised
but honestly it doesn't really matter to him because at the end of the day, he loves his family and he couldn't be happier to know they're there for him on his special day
who’s in the bridal parties / groomsmen / other
Lucifer -- and not just by default; Satan asked him specifically to be a part of his groomsmen
Lucifer was very soft about it, not that either of them will acknowledge it
tbh kind of hard not to just assume all the bros wouldn't be the groomsmen but if we had to choose a typical three, the other two would be Asmo (best man) and Mammon
who gives speeches at the reception ( bonus: what do they say? recount a sweet memory or two between them? tell an embarrassing story? )
Lucifer was the one to bear witness to another side of Satan when he made a pact with you, so undoubtedly he would talk about that just to embarrass Satan
Satan would never say it, but he’s warm thinking that Lucifer would remember something like that
I actually think his speech would be very emotional, considering the rocky relationship those had had and how much they each have grown and mended their bond
Satan tears up and squeezes your hand, though he is embarrassed when you smile at him knowingly
his other brothers probably sneak in speeches of their own about Satan's angstier days-- hoping to squeeze as many funny stories they’ve collected over the thousands of years living together as brothers
they're lucky Satan is in a good mood the entire day so he won't throttle them lmao
who catches the bouquet( s )
Solomon, the crafty bastard
Satan wishes he was more surprised
Asmo doesn't stop whining to Solomon the entire night
what their wedding photos are like ( are they sweet, with the couple holding hands or kissing or ~gazing into each others eyes~? are they silly, with a snapshot of the ‘cake-smash’ moment? or are they artistic, with one of them facing the sunset or holding their bouquets? )
Satan is a photographer-- of course he's going to go all out and memorialize the event
probably has been keeping a scrapbook of your relationship ever since you both went steady and tbh he might have to start a completely new photobook just for the journey from engagement to wedding
the wedding photos of you in your wedding outfit are personally taken by him-- there is no one else that can capture the way your eyes crinkle with joy or the soft glow of your smile at dusk
if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then you would be the most beautifully wedded person the world has ever seen in the photos Satan has taken of you
literally cannot get enough of you in your outfit that you have to tell him to stop so you can actually have photos of him and with him
trusts Asmo to make sure that they look on point and that the photographer takes good pictures of everything during the reception and wedding itself
just as much tender moments as there are silly moments; Satan loves them all
what sort of food they have at the reception
if they have their wedding in the human realm, then Satan would let you handle the food considering he knows more devildom food (food which may alarm normal people)
agrees to most of your choices, taking into consideration any allergies
what can I say? he's a reasonable guy
also he knows Beel would finish everything if anything
Definitely chooses the tea to be served during desserts though
who cries first during the ceremony
in comparison with Satan, you probably cry first, but Satan is definitely not far off from joining you after
it's one of the happiest days of both of your lives after all
how wild their reception gets ( who dances the best, who gets drunk first, etc. )
I stand by the fact Satan has pretty low tolerance for alcohol and you bet Asmo (and Mammon) helped plan everything and bought a TON of alcohol
Satan gets drunk quick and is extremely sappy with you the entire night cannot stop saying how happy he is that you chose him of all people, that he promises to make you as happy as he can, and that he loves you
bless Lucifer for keeping his brothers in check during the wedding; god knows what would happen otherwise
what their rings are like
Satan likes a simple gold band on his ring finger, though he wouldn't mind an engraving inside
if you do get something engraved, he'll get melty if it's a message for him or something that commemorates your relationship (he probably likes thay it's like the engraving on the One Ring in Lord of the Ring)
he gets you a diamond ring on a gold band
simple can go a long way!
what sort of favours they have ( heart shaped sparklers, mini champagne bottles, personalized candy etc. )
I actually don’t think you have any party favors; I imagined it to be a quaint, small wedding
Guests can take home the centerpieces and decorations though-- and the rice, if they didn’t throw it all at you lol
where they go for their honeymoon
somewhere with a lot of history and lots of things to see and do the man is an explorer and the next chapter of his life is with you
type to keep the romance alive by whisking you away into experiencing something new
idk why but I'm getting Belgium or Germany vibes for the honeymoon
something memorable that happens during the party / ceremony ( do they run out of ice and someone goes to get it in full formal wear on foot, does anyone fall asleep in the middle of the party, etc. )
asides from the typical House of Lamentation excitement (ie. Asmo flirting with everyone, Beel eating out every table, Mammon trying to steal the silverware, Belphie sleeping underneath every table at some point)
they run out of alcohol pretty quickly so Beel (almost completely sober) and Mammon (drunk) go out to get more while being supervised by (an admittedly tipsy) Lucifer-- and come back with a boatload of more alcohol and McDonalds froes two hours later
(i mean, combine a voracious appetite, a big spender, and a man who doesn’t make the best decisions when drunk is basically ASKING for something memorable to happen)
dear lord guys its almost 12am who do you think is gonna drink all of this wine and beer
also asmo definitely steals the wedding bouquet from solomon
who officiates the ceremony
definitely not a priest (haha)
I have an odd feeling it would be Barbatos
I think people would think he’s a priest anyways, asides from the teal highlight in his hair
what song their first dance is to
Everything - Michael Buble + Choreo gotta love youtube
Playful, happier dance
Lots of swaying motions and looking at each other’s faces and just laughing
(im so soft aaaaa)
A celebratory dance to start off the rest of your life together
sidenote: My friend was kind to note that the guy in the video’s outfit matches Satan’s butler where there’s a funky tie tucked into the vest too alskdfjsldkjf
Asmo couldn’t convince Satan otherwise to not wear the vest but it’s okay because all the two of you can focus on is each other anyways
who gives who away as they walk down the aisle
Satan doesn’t walk down the aisle, but Asmo (as best man), Lucifer, and Mammon stand beside him
Lucifer thinks it's endearing how much Satan fidgets until he sees you, then he's too enamored to remember to be nervous
Asmo thinks everything is picture-perfect; all according to plan
Mammon keeps crying into his sleeves
Satan watches you walk down the aisle, sees you beam at him, and it takes his breath away
nothing can take his gaze off you now

So. Here goes nothing... (1/?)
(Major spoilers for the comic, but since it won’t update anymore (besides PERHAPS some random comic strips/excerpts without context every now and then, but don’t count on it), I guess it doesn’t matter.)
If you read my answer to the ask posted earlier, you probably know what this post is about. I’ll make a list of every important point I wanted to tackle in the comic, in multiple sections. Be prepared for the long post that awaits you below the cut.
Summary of what was left of Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Following their first appearance at the beginning of the chapter, Lolph and Dundgren try to question Blendin, who is staying at a hospital and is still under intense care. They discuss what exactly happened to Blendin in the first place: he was assigned what was supposed to be a routine mission to solve a minor time anomaly in the 21st century, but his time machine exploded when he tried to operate it and he was gravely injured. Dundgren mentions that any normal time device should hardly cause this much damage when malfunctioning, suggesting that Blendin’s level of incompetence is so incredibly high, it somehow managed to make something that shouldn’t be able to explode blow up in his face. On the other hand, Lolph starts to wonder if, exactly because it should be impossible, the accident may have had a reason other than just Blendin’s incompetence. Unfortunately, the accident had consequences so grave on Blendin’s physical health, it seemingly also took a toll on his sanity and questioning him only leaves them with esoteric sentences of dubious credibility.
Blendin: “This is very nice of you… to visit me. There isn’t much time left. I was starting to feel alone, before everything disappears.” Blendin: “Time Baby will succeed… He will free us from this time.”
July 13, 2012 again: back in the gift shop of the Mystery Shack, Wendy and Soos have captured Bill and tied him up to a chair. Wendy starts interrogating him, asking him who or what he is-- throwing in her multiple guesses: the Shapeshifter she defeated with Dipper in the bunker, a paper clone... She doesn’t suspect demon possession or a switch-because-of-the-carpet scenario, however. Bill just keeps trying to break free with little success, without answering; and soon, Stan interrupts them when he enters the gift shop as well, followed by the dozen of tourists he took during his latest tour. Wendy and Soos manage to evade Stan’s obvious questions by pretending they were making a new attraction.
Back in Mabel’s Dreamscape, Mabel encourages Dipper to have some fun with Bill’s powers, but he is scared of messing up because of just how powerful he is; having seen Bill’s powers both in the Mindscape/Dreamscape and in Weirdmageddon when he witnessed the alternate timelines, Dipper knows just how far those powers can go and he isn’t sure he can control them. Still, after some teasing Mabel starts a snowball fight with the surrounding ice cream, and gradually the twins have more and more fun starting with the ice cream, then with the tricks Dipper starts to use. When they take a break, Mabel points out that nothing bad happened, and Dipper grows a bit more confident that he can use Bill’s powers in a way that isn’t dangerous.
Dipper: “I guess it’s easy to do exactly what you want when it literally happens in your mind... Huh.”
Dipper notices it’s almost noon, and Mabel remembers that she was supposed to meet William at Greasy’s Diner for lunch. Mabel is unseasy upon thinking of talking to him again after what happened the day before, and Dipper confirms by showing William’s current whereabouts through a peephole that William seems about as worried as she is. Mabel takes a deep breath, makes sure that she will be able to see Dipper whenever she needs (during the night for sure, perhaps earlier if she asks for it). Still, just before Dipper wakes her up... She has a favor to ask him.
Mabel: “Now that you can do lots of magic stuff and all... Could you do something for me?”
Back in the gift shop, the tourists have left and Bill was untied due to Stan’s confusion over the situation. However, he is forced to stay inside and is stuck sitting by Wendy’s side behind the cashier desk. When Mabel goes through the gift shop to go to the Diner, everyone notices that she made a new sweater -- one with a pine tree symbol on it, no less. Bill is enraged but can’t stop her from leaving.
William has his first face reveal. He is a blonde 13-year-old, and is already waiting worriedly at Greasy’s Diner when Mabel arrives. He immediately apologizes for what happened on the day before.
William: “About yesterday, I... I’m sorry I said your brother was a bad influence. That was uncalled for.”
Mabel: “Yes. Yes it was.”
William is genuinely apologetic, but soon it is revealed that the reason why he thought Dipper and the Mystery Shack were a bad influence was because he doesn’t believe at all in the supernatural. Even if Mabel told him about her adventures, he assumed they were just stories she made up while playing in the Mystery Shack’s museum and never believed them to be true. Mabel tries to convince him by showing him some episodes of Dipper’s “Guide to the Unexplained” -- a series of videos he used to make and post online at the beginning of their summer break upon arriving in Gravity Falls, but stopped making altogether after Summerween. Sadly, the episodes made up until then did not revolve around exceptionally weird anomalies, and aren’t enough to convince William. The only thing William admits to being strange is the fact that every inhabitant of Gravity Falls is “out of their minds.”
Exasperated by William’s absurdly high levels of skepticism, Mabel eventually dares him to go on a forest expedition with her, Candy and Grenda on the next day, just so they can show him pretty much anything in the forest that is out of the ordinary. William strongly refuses and tries to dissuade her to go into the forest at all; he has been personally forbidden by his mother from going anywhere near the forest, and he has also read on the local news that there is currently a predator of unknown origin or species on the loose, which has been notably attacking sheep from the nearby farm. Mabel teases him about the fact that he believes that this creature is real, and suggests that it might be a werewolf for example; but William doesn’t take her seriously, especially because the creature is supposed to fly.
And... This is the part where my script starts getting wonky. I’ve been trying to fill the holes, but sadly it’s proven to be quite difficult, especially now that I know I won’t be drawing it in comic form anyway. Still, the main plot should be precise enough! The holes are mainly just “there should be some filler and/or foreshadowing to what’s coming here”, with little more than just prompts for what could be happening.
Back in the Mystery Shack’s gift shop, Wendy tries to sneakily question Bill, but when Stan asks them where Mabel went and Bill tells him she skipped her restocking duty so she could spend time with William at the Diner, Stan asks him to get her back. Bill happily takes this opportunity to slip out of the Mystery Shack, and have an excuse to bother Mabel at the same time.
Eventually, William is obligated to accept Mabel’s terms and intends on coming so he can at least make sure that the girls won’t put themselves in danger upon visiting the forest on their own.
Bill arrives at the Diner. William, thinking he is meeting Dipper again, tries to make amends for the things he said the previous day and says that he earnestly thinks they can start again on the right foot; Bill sadistically mocks him instead, all the while pretending to be Dipper, just so he can ruin Mabel’s hopes of reconciling William and Dipper. Bill finishes Mabel by forcing her to leave, saying that Stan expects her to work at the gift shop like she was supposed to since the beginning.
Mabel gone, William and Bill start to have a tense conversation; well, tense on William’s part, while Bill is mostly just having a blast driving William mad. The old fanfic that was the first “draft” version of the story has this chapter, which gathers most of the jokes I intended to keep, and at least some of the plot points. I’ll put a warning for awkward English, though. Oh and also, apparently in the old version it was July 3rd and not July 13th, so in the comic the “tomorrow is July 4th so the forest trip can’t happen anyway” excuse wouldn’t work.
About the Quetzalcoatlus thing: here, have some fun dinosaur size comparisons & history following my latest research on what the pterodactyl from S1E18: Land Before Swine.
William: “And how would you even know all that?”
Bill: “Because I ate Leonardo da Vinci.”
William: “. . .”
William: “… It must have been some VERY cryptic way for you to say that it was one of those conspiracy things mentioned in the old book supposedly written by a genius that you keep reading passionately every day. Right?”
Bill: “Oh, so your brain CAN work sometimes!”
Bill gets bit by a soothquito. His bite marks spell “FHOASE CORECULLY“
Upon leaving the Diner, they both see someone being kidnapped by a member of the Blindeye Society. William insists they immediately go warn the police, but Blubs and Durland prove to be ineffective as ever. Bill slips in one or two facts about the secret society, but William dismisses them completely as other random insane things Bill just happens to say all the time for trolling purposes.
Mabel is back in the Mystery Shack and starts her restocking duty, but her mind is clearly elsewhere. She starts mumbling to herself, but is interrupted by the decapitated head of Larry King who just happened to be in the vents nearby. Mabel isn’t surprised at all to see he survived, and when Larry King starts "interviewing” her about the issues she was mumbling about, she complies. Some time later, while Soos is cleaning up the floor, he overhears Mabel complaining about Bill being a jerk on purpose and making Dipper seem like a terrible person, and ends up hearing pretty much the whole story that way, without Mabel knowing. Soos proceeds to tell Wendy what he heard, helping them putting two and two together-- all the while understanding why Mabel didn’t warn them, and why they should stay silent as well. They decide not to tell Mabel they know her secret; but when Bill comes back later, just as Wendy’s shift was about to end, she has just one thing to tell him:
Wendy: “Tomorrow 6PM. My place.”
Night time; Bill is annoyed, but not very surprised by the fact that Soos is sleeping with him  for the night, in the room on the ground floor where Dipper had relocated. Bill is at least glad he no longer has to pretend to be Dipper around Wendy and him.
Soos proceeds to ask Bill what his intentions were; not just in the present times now that the switch occurred, but also before it.
Soos: “So you really are that triangle guy from two weeks ago?”
Soos: “Now that I'm thinking about it… A lot of things happened two weeks ago. That's when it began to get all wrong. Well, it was already wrong before that, but… That's really when you came that everything started to get all weird and… bad.“
Soos: “It all started because of that Summerween night. What did you want with us?”
Soos: “Why did you tell Dipper that Gideon summoned you?”
Bill: “It was just a job. Jobs are boring. There’s no fun in it if nobody’s trying to stop you.”
Bill: “Oh, and you wanna know the best part? If you’d taken Shooting Star along with you instead of going just the two of you, perhaps you would’ve had an opportunity to beat me.”
Soos: What did you do with Gideon two weeks ago? Dipper and I knew it wasn’t a coincidence that those government guys showed up just the next day.
Bill: “Something that neither Pine Tree nor I want anybody to find out, I bet. Also if I were to tell you, you'd either faint or spend the next fourteen hours trying to explain it all to Red. Funny, but not worth it.”
Soos is disturbed by Bill’s attitude, because of course he tries to both troll and traumatize at once, and given how Soos was already terrified of Bill because of the Summerween night (”I’ve had nightmares for weeks!” from an earlier comic page), it doesn’t help. Soos tries to ask Bill about the deal he made with Gideon -- more specifically, he asks what Bill wanted in return for stealing the code from Stan’s mind. However, Bill doesn’t answer and instead opens the bedroom door to reveal that Mabel was trying to eavesdrop.
Mabel was mostly there to make sure that everything was alright, and deduces that Bill hadn't slept at all during the first night and that he intends to never sleep at all, even after she tells him that humans need sleep to survive. Thankfully she came prepared with a “surprise gift from Candy and Grenda”, and sprays Bill with Fairy Dust.
Mabel: “There’s probably enough in that bag to knock out a gremloblin in an instant, so I think he’s good for the night. :p”
Once Bill is asleep, Dipper takes this chance to come to his Dreamscape and talk to him one-on-one; and, he is not happy at how Bill treated Mabel so far. Still, after a certain point the conversation gets to a more pressing topic.
Bill: “You saw it happen, didn’t you?”
Bill: “Weirdmageddon. You saw it, right?”
Dipper: “. . .”
Bill: “Oh-ho, even better! There’s a timeline in which YOU make it happen, isn’t there?”
Dipper: “That’s not gonna happen.”
Bill: “Look kid, take it from me. The more you try to actively prevent a specific outcome, the more likely you usually make it happen.”
Dipper: “You can’t make something happen if you specifically stop everything that can lead to it from happening first.”
Dipper: “Even if it includes lying to Mabel…  I saw it. If she learns there’s a way to get me a physical form, she’ll try anything to make it happen and disregard the consequences. I bet she trusts me to keep things under control, but everything else? There’s just... There’s too many variables. We can’t let her know anything about the portal. Or Weirdmageddon.”
Bill: “Well, that doesn’t change anything from my original plan anyway.”
Bill: “So you’re just gonna stay in the Nightmare Realm forever, is that it?”
Dipper: “That’s not much of a plan so far, but that’s still an effective way to save the world.”
Bill: “Don’t mess with me. You DO know that if you don’t make your way to another dimension eventually, you’re just going to die, right?”
Dipper: “... W-what are you talking about?”
Bill: “Wait. You REALLY didn’t figure that out yet?”
Bill: “The Nightmare Realm is unstable. It’s just gonna collapse one of these days, destroy everything in it. Could be in a billion years. Could be tomorrow.”
After leaving Bill’s Dreamscape, Dipper decides to visit Wendy’s and tell her everything. He confirms her doubts, tells her the whole story with the carpet... And he tells her about Weirdmageddon and what Bill just told him about the Nightmare Realm.
Dipper: “I mean, it’s better this way for everyone, and of course I’m not gonna go with Bill’s original plan to destroy the laws of physics or whatever, but… I-I just don’t wanna die, you know?”
Wendy: “Don’t worry. We’ll find a way.”
