Last night during my twitch session, I felt the words of my new friend as she added another to her ever growing list of loved ones who have ascended to “C”. Almost as soon as Sylvester recognized his homosexuality at the age of fifteen, he sought refuge in the queer Black community of Los Angeles. In 1970, he moved to San Francisco and joined the Cockettes, where he immediately stood out because of his natural androgynous beauty and musical talent. . Beginning in 1976, after hiring backup singers Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes (“Two Tons o’ Fun”), Sylvester hit his musical stride, performing regularly at gay bars in San Francisco and signing to Fantasy Records in 1977. “Step II,” Sylvester’s second album for Fantasy, included two songs that catapulted the singer to fame: “Dance (Disco Heat)” and “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” . Even as he enjoyed mainstream success, however, Sylvester maintained a close connection with the gay liberation movement, performing at Gay Pride events throughout his career. . In 1987, Sylvester developed a persistent cough and ultimately was diagnosed with HIV. In June 1988, he attended his final Gay Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco, marching, with the assistance of a wheelchair, in the PWA (People With AIDS) contingent. . Sylvester died on December 16, 1988; he was forty-one. .
