It's weird that John doesn't have any friends apart from Sherlock. The only other friend he has is Lestrade, who's a mutual, and who's also known Sherlock longer than he's known John.
John is usually considered more approachable, I think. I mean, he's polite enough to get dates to go out on regularly.
But he's quite closed off and quite rude to Mike Stamford in ASIP. Mike seems to be so polite, and yet he doesn't correct John when he says, "Who would want to be my flatmate?", not even out of an attempt to be nice in that moment.
Odd, isn't it?
Hey Lovely!!
We have to remember that John's "approachability" only happened AFTER he met and lived with Sherlock. Perhaps he was in a past life before the army as well, but war changes people, especially when one is traumatized with a sudden life-shift as John was.
God knows that the government treats war vets like shit, so already John is doomed to struggle without help. He hated seeing his (probably army-provided, mandatory) therapist, struggled with just existing and, from context clues in ASiP, we know he probably never ate either. Before ASIP, I assume he just recently re-entered civilian life after a LONG healing period (if he almost died – and probably did - we can make the assumption that he was probably hospitalized for a long time too, probably a few months) and fresh off of a forced honourable discharge. He tried his best to just carry on as Brits do, but it's not HELPING. He's struggling emotionally and physically, poor, depressed, and just trying to survive after the government basically threw him to the side.
John felt aimless, unloved, and lonely, and absolutely suicidal by the time we meet him. He was rude because he didn't WANT to try anymore, but he still gave Mike the opportunity to catch up, which shows us that deep down John DID want to TRY.
And Mike didn't correct John simply because he is a doctor. And we can presume an ARMY doctor if he's at Barts, so he KNOWS John isn't going to do well after war. John is NOT Mike's first time seeing a traumatized war vet. That's why Mike is gentle and knows John is struggling. And Mike knew JUST the perfect chaotic person to keep John's mind off of the tedium of his life-after-war.
Mike is a genius in my book.
Sherlock saved John just as much as John saved Sherlock.
Two loner misfits with strained relationships with their living relatives and thought weird by society? Totally meant to be!

All That Is the Case - Chapter 4 & Epilogue - completed!
Whew, the entirety of All That Is the Case is finally all up! Chapter 4 (Whereof We Cannot Speak) and the Epilogue (What Is the Case/Outside the World) have now been posted.
So ends our story. It's hard to pick an excerpt since the denouement is all rather spoiler-y, as a spy story should hopefully be! Without going into detail about what all was going on, here's a bit from the epilogue:
Sherlock took the book out. “I owed this to you. I have to say, it was better than I expected.” John took it from him automatically. “And thank you for returning the Wittgenstein.” “Of course.” John brushed his face, then sighed. “This feels strange.” “Wrong?” “Perhaps. I—no. Not wrong. But…I don’t know.” Now…Sherlock said, “I missed you.” “God help me, I missed you too. I can’t believe you’re here. I already said that.” John rubbed his hand over his eyes, and took a breath. “You are still the most beautiful, delightful, and strangest person I’ve ever met.” The hope that sprang up in his chest—like a climbing vine, luxuriant and all at once helplessly out of control.
Read Chapter 4 and the epilogue here!
In the mean time, I want to express my gratitude again to my beta readers @calaisreno, @7-percent, and @jrow. Their encouragement and advice on everything from wording to when the UK adopted the Celsius scale (whoops!) were greatly appreciated. A final shoutout goes to them, my very supportive partner, and everyone who has been helping to promote this fic on this site. There is a longer author's note at the end of the fic with more on my influences and historical notes pertaining to the last few chapters.
And finally, thank you, THANK YOU dear readers! Your engagement and your comments are deeply appreciated. This story, my first ever completed fic, has been an even more personal one than I realized. It turns out I put a little bit of myself into Sherlock here and there. I hope the results do justice to him and the rest of the story.

Can't stop thinking about a post that said Sherlock had signal on his phone all along so of course I drew a quick comic on a piece of paper that was laying around my desk of Mike's reaction to it, because of course this happened
Done in 10 minutes and with no reference but I had to get it out of my head somehow haha

He made a point of not being involved in Sherlock’s problems—that way lay nightmares, bodily injury, angry policemen.

Mike knew what would happen if he introduced John Watson to Sherlock Holmes. He knew exactly what would happen, and he did it anyway.

Please tell me something about Laws of Motion.
Thank you for the ask! <3
I wrote The First Law, a 221b ficlet from Mike Stamford’s POV about his chance meeting with John Watson in Russell Square. Mike was great fun to write and I thought it would be fun to explore the character more, to get his perspective on Sherlock and John. And so, Laws of Motion was born. The idea is to write the series from Mike’s POV- one chapter for each series. I have done very little on this so far, only about 500 words. Here are a couple:
A booming voice from down the hall broke his reverie. “STAMFORD!”
Startled, Mike dropped the pen he was twirling, then smiled. Ah, Sherlock Holmes. Always good for an interesting- and boisterous- distraction.
I had the thought that maybe Mike keeps a scrapbook of clippings, mostly for his own amusement, but that maybe at the end of the story he gives it to John and Sherlock. I’m still interested in this, but it’s not high on my list.
More WIPs to ask about here, if you want!

Beautiful Ideas by metisket <ao3>
-fandom-: Sherlock (TV)
-tags-: outsider perspective
-length-: 2.3k words
-what L thinks about it-: So it turns out that I like character studies. I am shocked, gasping, on the floor.
This fanfic answers the eternal question of: “Mike Stamford, why are you smiling like that as you throw your friend John to the wolves?”
The whole thing is very funny.
Sherlock used to be a bit of an obsession in my youth. Now as a senior citizen, I don’t interact with or consume the media anymore but this is a delightful blast from the past.

All That Is the Case - Chapter 2: A Logical Picture
Chapter 2 of All That is the Case is finally up! Apologies for the delay in posting, work got a little crazy these last few weeks. As ever, many thanks to my invaluable beta readers @calaisreno, @7-percent and @jrow, whose suggestions really helped improve this chapter.
To recap: This is a Sherlock/John 1940s spy AU, *completed* (not a WIP). The prologue introduces Sherlock, Mycroft, and several other characters, and in Chapter 1, John and Sherlock finally meet.
Here's a snippet from Chapter 2, which is called "A Logical Picture". It's the spring of 1947. In this scene, Sherlock and John are on a walk in Hampstead Heath:
They walked on a little further, until they came upon the famous promontory that overlooks the city. There were other people there taking in the view. A young family, several couples, and solitary figures, too. It had been extraordinarily foggy, but the mist was starting to dissipate a little, revealing pockets of the landscape below. They could just make out St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster, and beyond that, the Thames. A world that was starting to become more and more known to him, though the more he learned of it, the more he began to understand how much of it might always remain unknowable. Either way, he felt he could gaze upon it forever, this city where one could appear and disappear into at will, which could well have been snuffed out had a far more terrible confluence of events come to pass—but which also felt outside of time, rolling on and on beneath the clouds, without end. Abruptly John said, apparently out of somewhere deep in his thoughts, “Sometimes it is too difficult to make sense of events. Sometimes…things just happen, and they are what they are. You look for reasons or a greater pattern so you can make a story out of it, so you know where you fit in, but it just gets too convoluted and messy. Or contradictory.” Sherlock said, “But isn’t that just human nature? A reflex to aid in coping. It can’t be forced.” “No, it can’t.” What stories had John tried to tell himself, wounded in action, struggling through an uncertain recovery, and ultimately deprived of his profession? Aimless in London. A hero, abandoned by his country. He seemed to be doing well enough for himself now, but it was likely that he had struggled through some dark nights of the soul. It seemed very unfair to Sherlock, that John should have ever felt forsaken in any way. “I don’t know if you feel that way yourself. Or how you could, if you have, or do,” Sherlock attempted, fumbling a bit. “It seems to me that you’ve lived a life to be proud of, that anyone could find meaning in.” John laughed, somewhat bitterly. “This may come as a shock to you, but I’ve done a thing or two I wasn’t so proud of. I may not be as—” He stopped, cutting himself off in the middle of an aspirated syllable. Sherlock thought he had been about to say the word honourable, but he wasn’t sure.
