HEY BESTIES i just got my wisdom teeth removed from my face and I hurt very much but HERE'S THAT ANALYSIS I PROMISED:
The Puffin Colony
I feel like seasons 1-2 Peso would have been slightly afraid of the gaping puffin; and one reason why I love AnB is because of how well it shows how far Peso has come. In the sea snakes episode, Peso sounds the Octo-alert by himself for the first time, but he's very nervous, and he hesitates saying "Octonauts! To the HQ!" But here, he's 100% confident. It even seems he drove out to the island in the Gup-A all by himself.
Kwazii got excited and did his usual flip, and the puffins all ran away. He immediately assumes it's his fault, and starts apologizing; promising that he's good. Not like other pirates.
Not a moment later, we have Kwazii deciding he's going to scare the gull away to protect Peso and the egg. He's very confident he'll be able to do this.
Because pirates are scary, yes. This is his only argument—he's a pirate, so you better get lost, birdie. He almost looks confused when the gull simply flies away, more annoyed if anything.
Kwazii looks very proud of himself for tricking the gull, so I headcanon that the "pirate switcheroo" is something that Calico Jack taught him during their missions together.
Peso and the puffins come running down the hill, because they saw the gull fly into the rock. They didn't see Kwazii try to stop him. They call Kwazii a hero. They think he did it on purpose. Then there he goes again, apologizing and explaining himself; you can see the pure guilt in his eyes. He'd never want to hurt anyone, that's why he's an Octonaut—but now a creature has been hurt because of him.
Ah yes, the fiercest pirate in the seven seas.
One reason Kwazii might've offered to keep the egg warm was to get away from the puffins calling him a "hero," and to redeem himself. Prove that he really is good.
He looks so sad,,, he was so happy just a second ago when he felt the egg crack, but now he's stuck back where he was in the beginning where the puffins think he's a threat; and of course we know why he thinks that is.
Man, Kwazii's not having a good day, is he?
At least the end of the episode is super cute. [the newborn puffling does a backflip and says "Yeow!" all happily.] That baby doesn't know pirates are supposed to be scary, they just like Kwazii. *sobbing* that's so nice— (and possibly an interesting example of how hate is taught.)
I really like the contrast between Kwazii and Calico Jack.
Kwazii always assumes a monster did something, and all his stories are full of them.
Calico Jack's stories are more like "I was attacked by fire ants! there was a HUGE anaconda snake!"
Calico Jack's stories have real (albeit dramatized) creatures in them.
In Above and Beyond during the Harlequin Duck ep, Kwazii suggests that some monster shrunk the coast, and Calico Jack tells him it was just coastal erosion.
So like,, where did Kwazii hear these monster stories? Maybe Jack told him them when he was a kitten, and since he was left alone growing up after he disappeared, he never learned the truth.
Edit: and considering his response to finding the eggs was "Careful! Could be a mermaid's!" (followed by a subtle weird glance by Pete), I'd say he's still playing along.
We haven't seen Bianca or the cubs yet/they haven't become octo-agents yet because Barnacles would be way too worried about them getting hurt 24/7 to do anything else.
I love the writing so much. it's clearly different and it's so good. all of the characters feel distinctly more personal, and they're definitely trying to focus more on their individual development, which is good.
I ESPECIALLY love how Kwazii is being written now, before he was "funky cat boi look at him go! oh we're on a serious mission now so he'll act mature. then back to funky cat boi!" Now he's a really satisfying blend of both kinda?? I can't explain it but I like it. also he's a dork. he was SO excited to show Shellington the goby, it was adorable lol
AND BARNACLES??? DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE PANDA EPISODE. IT HAD MANATEES VIBES OHMYGOSH. I've headcannoned for YEARS that he had separation anxiety and I was RIGHT? I THINK?? THEY DID IT. THEY MADE HIM FEEL AN EMOTION™, but they didn't let him talk about it at the end! and i just KNOW it's gonna come up again. he's gonna have to face it. i just KNOW-
Fine if ya don't wanna, but could you summarize the nine banded armadillo episode?my favorite octo-agent is ranger Marsh and the 9 banded armadillo is my 2nd favorite animal! (If u were wondering the pink fairy armadillo is my 1st fav animal!) so yea I was very excited to see the episode and was wondering if u wanted to talk about it! Ty! <3
Yeah of course!
Firstly, I really like how Ranger Marsh is genuinely friends with all the swamp creatures, and they all know and like him. Secondly: I like Phil's cameo appearance. (He was from a season 4 episode, if anyone doesn't remember.)
This is random, but the way Barnacles' eyes are shaded make him look like he hasn't slept in 50 years. Which isn't too unreasonable after the events of The Bamboo Rescue.
This feels... like a metaphor. 😶
Ranger Marsh feels like a swamp!Shellington with how much he knows about the creatures living there, and how he instantly recognized the rare armadillo tracks with just one look.
This is interesting, because it implies that Ranger Marsh can't swim; which is actually very abnormal for Floridian Marsh Rabbits. Marsh rabbits are one of the few subspecies of rabbits that can be fully submerged in water without experiencing Shock symptoms, let alone swim. I don't think we've ever seen him in water before this episode either, so this theory holds up.
Just wanna say, that this must've been HORRIFYING lmao.
And to close off, I present an accurate representation of me when my dad decides to go ZYOOM on a highway.
.
also I looked up a picture of those pink fairy armadillos—and they're adorable???? oh my gosh????? i love them they're so smol
Could you do an analysis on the episode Octonauts and the Manatees?
Yes I can 😌
Starting off right at the start, I wanna note how strange it is that Barnacles is alone in the first place. He (canonically, I think) has separation anxiety, and really doesn't like being alone. Even if it's a simple mission like collecting some octo-floats, I still think he would've at least asked Kwazii to join him.
One trait of his that I like, is his habit of talking to himself out loud constantly. It could actually be connected to how he doesn't like being alone: the silence bothers him. Or, it could just be his way of processing things faster. (I talked about it a little in my "Barnacles is Autistic" analysis.)
...I like how Kwazii's the one who notices something's up first, and asks. Barnacles messed up Shellington's name three times, and he didn't notice at all, just continued talking. It's also usually Kwazii who checks in on him a few times throughout the ep. He's the one who asks if he's alright near the end, then asks what happened at the end.
I LOVE how Kwazii immediately takes charge whenever Barnacles is away/occupied. It's just really nice to see him actually being the lieutenant; He does it in Caves of Sac Actun as well, and it's literally my favourite Kwazii trait. I like how quickly he can switch from "having fun" to "serious."
(SIR. PLEASE.) Somebody on the Octonauts wiki described this as Barnacles just being "dishonest" but I politely disagree. He's trying to protect his crew, prevent them from worrying about him (because he hates that), and he's putting the manatees first. To him, the manatees are more important than calling someone to help get his paw unstuck. (He could also be embarrassed, which is fair.)
Four Gups, but there were five Octonauts present (Kwazii, Tweak, Peso, Dashi, and Shellington). One of them could have easily been spared to help Captain Barnacles, but nooooooooooo—
(I speak muffle trust me, I'm an expert.) Even when Barnacles is literally about to drown at the bottom of the ocean, he STILL refuses to let Kwazii or Peso know something is wrong. He can't even talk, because he's about to DIE, but he's still trying to comfort them.
This whole episode is just Barnacles re-enacting the "this is fine" meme a hundred times until it's No Longer Fine, and I really hope they talked about it afterwards off screen, or that Peso at least looked at Barnacles a little because that man got Hurt.
