La notte di Natale

I passi frettolosi della gente, chi corre e chi annaspa.

Si è sempre in ritardo con qualcosa.

Osservo e mi faccio piccolo, passo inosservato, va bene così.

Sono come un essere invisibile, chi mi sfreccia accanto non mi nota.

La casa è addobbata come ho potuto, forse è meglio dire come ho voluto. Al minimo per non rovinare l'atmosfera ai miei figli. Va bene così.

La cucina, l'acqua che bolle nella pentola. Lo sfrigolio dalla padella mi fa capire che ci siamo. Preparo con cura le pietanze. Questa sera della vigilia di Natale, in parte, la passerò da mia madre.

Lei, essere debole, rassegnato, che non vuol più reagire ai dolori della sua esistenza. Le ho preparato da mangiare, finirò di scaldare il tutto da lei. Mia madre apparecchia la tavola, la tovaglia rossa è d'obbligo in casa sua. Come ai tempi in cui la tavola era un altare della convivialità, ricca di pietanze e di persone, di voci e di risate, di spensieratezza e calore umano.

Le taglio il cibo, pezzetti piccoli mi raccomando, e la guardo mentre mangia soddisfatta il cibo preparatogli da suo figlio. Mi fa strano essere io a prepararle da mangiare. Ma va bene così.

Torno a casa, la cena. Manca un figlio. Ha deciso di lavorare questa sera, per essere un po' indipendente. E va bene così.

Esco per andarlo a riprendere. Aspetto fuori. Guardo la Luna, il cielo e limpido, non fa freddo colpa dell'alta pressione dicono.

Penso. A quante volte ho detto a me stesso "va bene così". Troppe volte, davvero. Penso a quanti questa notte, nonostante mille sforzi, diranno va bene così. Mentre altri avranno di che lamentarsi, nonostante abbiano tanto di più.

La gente dovrebbe scambiarsi gli occhi, per guardarsi con gli occhi in un altro, con altre possibilità e stile di vita.

Questa notte in cui qui da noi si pensa a essere più buoni, mentre la realtà è che spesso si è solamente un po' meno egoisti.

Interrompo i miei pensieri, un trillo di telefono. "Madre" sussurro, la paura che stia male mi prende la gola. La sua voce commossa mi ripete che era tutto buono, che si sente felice. Che io sono il "suo Albero di Natale". La saluto.

Arriva mio figlio, mi chiede perché piango, gli dico una innocente bugia: manca Alvin e manca Minù.

In parte è vero, ma quello che più mi manca è di essere sereno. Mi manca quella telefonata che vorrei ricevere, che vorrei fare. Ma di cui non ho il coraggio. Ma va bene così.

Buon Natale, a chi con pazienza mi legge, a chi dopo due righe scorre e va oltre e a chi sa invece interpretare a fondo i miei pensieri.

Non so cosa scrivere eppure mi sento l'anima nebulosa con tante cose dentro che nemmeno so decifrare.

Mi sento stanca e insoddisfatta. Non so cosa sto facendo e mi sento persa in un mezzo a un vuoto: non vedo una direzione, un'obiettivo, qualcosa. Vivo le giornate a comandi: questo mese fai il training, rispondi alle telefonate, fai i colloqui ecc ecc. Per il resto niente più.

Penso alla mia non-famiglia: non sento nessuno da quando sono partita. Va bene così, era quello che volevo ma non vuol dire che mi faccia stare bene. Mia madre e mio fratello sono a fare le vacanze che lei sognava di fare per festeggiare i suoi 50 anni. Mio padre non lo so né mi interessa.

Chiamo e sento solo i nonni - qualche giorno fa li ho videochiamati e mi sono teletrasportata nel mio paesello. Preparavano le cose per il ferragosto, mentre qui è stata una settimana lavorativa normale (e pure pesante per sto training a orari del cazzo).

Con la coppia indiana stiamo organizzando di scalare il monte Fuji il mese prossimo. Era una cosa che non ho potuto fare 5 anni fa, quando le mie conoscenti lo avevano fatto e che io ho proposto. Vediamo.

Mi sento molto a casa con loro. Mi meraviglio di come il sud sia sud in tutto il mondo: danno grande spazio al cibo, condividono sempre, mi chiamano sempre ma allo stesso tempo criticano tutti, sono pettegoli, sono talmente legati al loro cibo da non volerne sapere di nient'altro. Penso a quante persone diverse io abbia incontrato da gennaio. In Erasmus ho fatto amicizia con una polacca, una greca e oggi me la rido con degli indiani, oltre a convivere con persone cinesi, messicane, ceche, francesi, americane, italiane e così via.

Paradossalmente sono in Giappone ma il giapponese lo uso pochissimo. Tutti prima di partire mi hanno detto:"Chissà come migliorerai col giapponese adesso" e invece all'estero succede che entri in delle bolle per cui nel tuo quotidiano parli tutt'altra lingua. Parlo in inglese stentato perché noto che se non ho un interlocutore madrelingua non metto sforzo né in pronuncia né in grammatica e parlo come mangio.

Dicevo, ci sono persone di ogni tipo ed alcune si sono lanciate verso il vuoto in questo paese senza sapere niente della lingua. Mi sono ricordata che al primo anno di università rifiutai la borsa erasmus che avevo vinto perché non c'erano più paesi disponibili che parlassero in inglese e per me era impensabile buttarmi in un paese di cui non conoscessi la lingua. Ad oggi lo farei ma sono passati 7-8 anni di vita nel mezzo e sono ormai adulta. Qui ci sono ragazzini di 20 anni stentati e alla loro età non avrei avuto il coraggio.

Per molti, o forse per tutti, questo è un paese di passaggio. Vieni, prendi il visto studentesco di 1 anno e te ne vai a casa, con la possibilità di aver detto di aver vissuto dall'alta parte del globo. Nessuno rimane e a ben dire (anche perché i giapponesi fanno lo stesso). Questo è un posto unico al mondo dove le cose sono così diverse da tutto il resto della normalità che gli studiosi lo hanno definito "Galapagos syndrome": esistono cose solo per i giapponesi perché questa è una società tutta particolare con esigenze proprie. Se non sei abituato a questa vita non riesci a fartene un'abitudine e se ci sei nato non riesci a vivere altrove. È un posto difficile, ben oltre le aspettative della gente comune.

L'altra volta sentivo il podcast de Il Post sui libri giapponesi sempre più amati in Italia e mi fa sempre ridere quella patina di fascino che hanno tutti quando si parla di qui. Mi fa sempre sorridere e far incazzare questa cosa. Il prof Coci intervistato nel podcast ha detto cose storicamente vere ma per come le ha dette erano cagate per me. Eppure anche io ne sono stata vittima e vivo tuttora a mie spese le conseguenze di questa infatuazione.

Così come mi fanno ridere sia italiani e indiani che dicono:"A me interessa solo la lingua, la cultura non mi interessa". Come se le due cose si potessero separare così, all'acqua di rose.

Ripensandoci forse a Rovigo stavo meglio. Chissà se potrò trovare la serenità anche in questo paese.

Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day

Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day commemorates the start of the  California Gold Rush, which began on January 24, 1848, when James  Marshall discovered gold while building a saw mill for John Sutter, near  what is now Coloma, California. The day has its roots in International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and was inspired by Prospectors Day, which was once held at Knott's Berry Farm each year on January 24. It also was inspired by an episode of the Simpsons with the following exchange:

Bart: That ain't been popular since aught-six, dagnabbit. Homer: Bart, what did I tell you? Bart: No talking like a grizzled 1890's prospector, consarn it.

Common examples of characters talking like grizzled prospectors in popular culture include Dallas McKennon narrating Disneyland's Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland and Big Thunder Mountain, Gabby Hayes—both drunk and sober—in many Western films, Gabby Johnson in Blazing Saddles, Will Ferrell as Gus Chiggins on Saturday Night Live, and Walter Huston in The Treasure of Sierra Madre.

Prospectors first came to the Sacramento Valley after Marshall found  flakes of gold in the American River near Sutter's Mill, at the base of  the Sierra Nevada Mountains. At the time there were less than 1,000  non-native inhabitants in California. Newspapers began reporting the  discovery of gold, and by August, 4,000 miners had descended on the  area. The first people that came from outside of the territory came by  boat, and arrived from Oregon, the Sandwich Islands—soon to be called  the Hawaiian Islands, Mexico, Peru, China, and Chili.

In December 1848, President James K. Polk announced a report by  Colonel Richard Mason which spoke of the abundance of gold in  California; this prompted more prospectors to travel to the territory.  Throughout 1849, thousands arrived, either traveling by sea or over  land, and became known as '49ers. Mining towns popped up in the area,  and with them came shops, saloons, and brothels. Many mining towns  became lawless, and San Francisco became an important city in the  territory. By the end of 1849, the non-native population had swelled to  100,000. The Gold Rush helped California gain statehood in 1850, and  gold discovery peaked in the state in 1852. In all, more than 750,000  pounds of gold were extracted during the Gold Rush.

The implication of a grizzled prospector is of one who has stayed so  long searching for gold that their hair has turned gray. Some  prospectors refused to quit the profession and continued to live in the  Western territories. So, when Bart Simpson mentioned a grizzled  prospector from the 1890s, he was referring to a prospector that had  stayed more than forty years after the Gold Rush happened, still trying  to find gold, or other commodities such as silver, oil, radium, and  uranium. Besides a gray beard, the stereotypical grizzled prospector had  faded clothes, missing teeth, a pickaxe, and a mule. They had bouts of  gold fever, and were suspicious of whoever came close to their claim.

How to Observe Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day

Celebrate the day talking like a grizzled prospector. Here are a few words prospectors commonly used, that you could use today:

Dadburn: to curse; e.g.: "Dadburned boll weevil done 'et my crop!"

Hornswoggle: to embarrass, disconcert, or confuse; e.g.: "I'll be hornswaggled!"

Consarn: the entirety of something, also a curse word.

Dumbfungled: all used up; e.g.: "This claim is dumbfungled! There's no gold left!"

Bonanza: a mine with lots of gold.

Borrasca: a mine with no gold.

Baby buggy: wheel barrow.

Muck: to dig with a shovel.

Powder monkey: a miner who used dynamite to make holes.

Johnny Newcome: a miner new to camp.

Blackjack and saw bosom: coffee and bacon.

Paydirt: land rich in gold.

Panned out: if they had found gold while sifting through dirt with a mining pan, then things had "panned out."

Flash in the pan: something shiny in pan that turned out to be nothing, or just a small piece of gold.

Stake a claim: claim a piece of land as your own as a place to  search for gold, must stake the land with wooden stakes when you arrive.

The day could also be spent watching films such as The Treasure of Sierra Madre, or old Western films starring Gabby Hayes. A visit to the Sutter's Mill replica and the Gold Discovery and Visitor Center in Marshall Gold Discovery State Park could also be planned. The days' Facebook page could also be explored.

I’ve never really eaten Laotian food but can’t wait to explore and learn more about this cuisine and culture. I highly recommend this restaurant if you’re in the Raleigh area! I’ll definitely be back as soon as possible!

These pictures were taken at the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro, NC…it’s one of my favorite hotels and they also have a fabulous restaurant called Print Works. The Proximity was named after the the Proximity Mill which was a cotton and sawmill in the 1800s. The restaurant was named after the Printworks Mill. These names are nods to Greensboro’s rich textile history. It’s such a pretty hotel and the food is delicious so we decided to take some pictures and then eat lunch after!

I’m wearing a gorgeous cashmere sweater and trousers from Brochu Walker. I started working with Brochu Walker last year around this time and they have truly become one of my favorite brands! The clothes are timeless, well made and elegant and pieces that I reach for again and again!

Brochu Walker makes the most luxurious cashmere and I’ll be wearing this sweater nonstop until the weather gets too warm. The camel is such a great color and it also comes in a beautiful ivory color…it’s so elegant! The pants are a linen/cotton blend and so versatile! I have the same style in a brown faux leather and I’ve worn them often! I’m such a denim girl and these pants have a denim look but a trouser style which I love! I added my favorite Veronica Beard booties (I’ll wear slingbacks when the weather gets warmer), my Louis Vuitton tote and a chunky gold chain (similar here).

Baldy and I are off to Florida on Tuesday and I’m very ready for some sunny skies and warm temperatures!

Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day

Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day commemorates the start of the  California Gold Rush, which began on January 24, 1848, when James  Marshall discovered gold while building a saw mill for John Sutter, near  what is now Coloma, California. The day has its roots in International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and was inspired by Prospectors Day, which was once held at Knott's Berry Farm each year on January 24. It also was inspired by an episode of the Simpsons with the following exchange:

Bart: That ain't been popular since aught-six, dagnabbit. Homer: Bart, what did I tell you? Bart: No talking like a grizzled 1890's prospector, consarn it.

Common examples of characters talking like grizzled prospectors in popular culture include Dallas McKennon narrating Disneyland's Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland and Big Thunder Mountain, Gabby Hayes—both drunk and sober—in many Western films, Gabby Johnson in Blazing Saddles, Will Ferrell as Gus Chiggins on Saturday Night Live, and Walter Huston in The Treasure of Sierra Madre.

Prospectors first came to the Sacramento Valley after Marshall found  flakes of gold in the American River near Sutter's Mill, at the base of  the Sierra Nevada Mountains. At the time there were less than 1,000  non-native inhabitants in California. Newspapers began reporting the  discovery of gold, and by August, 4,000 miners had descended on the  area. The first people that came from outside of the territory came by  boat, and arrived from Oregon, the Sandwich Islands—soon to be called  the Hawaiian Islands, Mexico, Peru, China, and Chili.

In December 1848, President James K. Polk announced a report by  Colonel Richard Mason which spoke of the abundance of gold in  California; this prompted more prospectors to travel to the territory.  Throughout 1849, thousands arrived, either traveling by sea or over  land, and became known as '49ers. Mining towns popped up in the area,  and with them came shops, saloons, and brothels. Many mining towns  became lawless, and San Francisco became an important city in the  territory. By the end of 1849, the non-native population had swelled to  100,000. The Gold Rush helped California gain statehood in 1850, and  gold discovery peaked in the state in 1852. In all, more than 750,000  pounds of gold were extracted during the Gold Rush.

The implication of a grizzled prospector is of one who has stayed so  long searching for gold that their hair has turned gray. Some  prospectors refused to quit the profession and continued to live in the  Western territories. So, when Bart Simpson mentioned a grizzled  prospector from the 1890s, he was referring to a prospector that had  stayed more than forty years after the Gold Rush happened, still trying  to find gold, or other commodities such as silver, oil, radium, and  uranium. Besides a gray beard, the stereotypical grizzled prospector had  faded clothes, missing teeth, a pickaxe, and a mule. They had bouts of  gold fever, and were suspicious of whoever came close to their claim.

How to Observe Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day

Celebrate the day talking like a grizzled prospector. Here are a few words prospectors commonly used, that you could use today:

Dadburn: to curse; e.g.: "Dadburned boll weevil done 'et my crop!"

Hornswoggle: to embarrass, disconcert, or confuse; e.g.: "I'll be hornswaggled!"

Consarn: the entirety of something, also a curse word.

Dumbfungled: all used up; e.g.: "This claim is dumbfungled! There's no gold left!"

Bonanza: a mine with lots of gold.

Borrasca: a mine with no gold.

Baby buggy: wheel barrow.

Muck: to dig with a shovel.

Powder monkey: a miner who used dynamite to make holes.

Johnny Newcome: a miner new to camp.

Blackjack and saw bosom: coffee and bacon.

Paydirt: land rich in gold.

Panned out: if they had found gold while sifting through dirt with a mining pan, then things had "panned out."

Flash in the pan: something shiny in pan that turned out to be nothing, or just a small piece of gold.

Stake a claim: claim a piece of land as your own as a place to  search for gold, must stake the land with wooden stakes when you arrive.

The day could also be spent watching films such as The Treasure of Sierra Madre, or old Western films starring Gabby Hayes. A visit to the Sutter's Mill replica and the Gold Discovery and Visitor Center in Marshall Gold Discovery State Park could also be planned. The days' Facebook page could also be explored.
