Elvyra is the only daughter of business leader and investor Jorge Ramos and socialite and philanthropist Andrea Ramos (now Van Cortlandt after her second marriage). she is of spanish/cuban descent and was born in miami, florida but has lived in beverly hills for the majority of her life.

She grew up with everything handed to her on a silver platter, but it wasn’t material stuff she wanted. she wanted attention from her parents

they were constantly traveling or working or hosting or attending events. family time was extremely limited, but it was great when it happened and she spent weeks at a time looking forward to the next time the three of them could have dinner together. she loved her parents, but seemingly not as much as they loved each other. so she did everything she could think of to get their attention

this began with excelling in school and at various extra curricular activities. she discovered a knack for artistic endeavors and picked up gymnastics and cheerleading but when the ‘making them proud’ angle didn’t yield the results she wanted, she quickly changed strategies. it seemed that negative attention worked the best. If she failed or class or got in trouble for flashing the lunchroom at her private school, they had to take notice.

she also quickly learned that she could get what she was lacking at school instead. if she acted out there, there was an instant reaction and seemingly no negative consequences.

she dove headfirst into the social scene at her school and quickly realized that attention really wasn’t that hard to come by at all. especially from guys–she’d always been boy-crazy but the awakening of her sexuality in high school showed her just how addictive it could be to feel desired. she began thriving on sexual attention, dressing provocatively and acting the part for her dose of validation

being in the spotlight was an added stressor. what a normal high schooler might have gotten away with was under constant scrutiny by seemingly everyone. high society talked and she hated the whole world that her parents belonged to. she loved the money and luxury of it all, but hated the phoniness and constant pressure. it only exacerbated her rebellious streak and her acting out continued through college

she attended nyu for business, spending her nights partying in nyc when she wasn’t flying in to la for various events she was expected to attend. despite her obvious wealth, her parents’ friends turned their noses down at her and treated her as lesser. after college she felt like she had a lot to prove

with the help of a ton of hired professionals she was able to start her own business ventures with some hefty loans from her father. many failed–an investment on a production company that went under, a boutique that cost way too much in rent, a luxury travel agency that was a trainwreck from the start–but a couple stuck.

most notably, elvyra has her own successful lifestyle brand (think goop but more millennial and less goopy) including a very successful line of skincare and cosmetics.

she’s currently living in beverly hills and doing her best to keep her private life from interfering in her business. in her constant pursuit of feeling loved and wanted, she’s been known to sleep around when she isn’t tied up in a relationship. it’s been an unspoken secret that elvyra’s indiscretions have broken up at least two high profile marriages, but a few craftily written NDAs have prevented a major scandal. it’s only a matter of time before she has to face consequences for her impulsivity.

in an attempt to make a name for herself outside of her parents’ wealth and successes, she has accepted the invitation to the society and is currently an initiate 

personality

Elvyra is a spoiled brat, really. She’s rich and pretty and entirely too used to getting her way. She doesn’t handle rejection well and lashes out when she’s told “no”.

Sometimes she grapples with needing to feel in control and can be prone to starting petty arguments or stirring up trouble. She rarely keeps her thoughts or opinions to herself and likes provoking reactions from people. She especially likes to test people’s boundaries, more-so as she gets closer with them.

Elvyra is selfish above all else. She’s looking out for number one, and that means doing what she needs to do to get ahead/ get attention/ have fun. She doesn’t trust easily and has loyalties to few. she’s been known to push people away.

Self-control is not her strong suit. She’s never really dealt with consequences or responsibilities and can be careless and reckless as a result. Instant gratification is her MO. She wants what she wants when she wants it and is prone to impulsivity.

She’s also motivated by a craving for acceptance. She often feels lonely and is desperate for anything that makes her feel loved, wanted, or otherwise like she belongs. Desire seems to be the easiest way for her to fill that void.

She can be a little short-tempered and defensive. If you poke fun at something she’s touchy about, she’ll turn on you in an instant. Can also be a little confrontational.

Would never ever ever turn down an invitation to anything. She loves parties, events, and anything that involves socializing. Sometimes she goes a bit overboard, either drinking too much or messing around with drugs or, of course, sleeping with the wrong people. This means a lot of work for her PR team

TLDR; what might your character know about elvyra? her father Jorge Ramos founded a very successful clothing company (think zara) and is a multi-billionaire as a result (among other business ventures), her mom is a socialite and starred on a reality tv show (think real housewives of beverly hills) and elvyra has her own lifestyle brand (think goop but more millenial and less goopy) which encompasses luxury skincare and cosmetics lines. she’s also known for being confrontational, a partier, and something of a homewrecker, which may or may not be true. At the very least, it’s common knowledge that she gets around. 

as far as connections go, i’m open to anything! she is very well traveled and incredibly social so i can see her knowing most characters!

I don’t think so -- that’s all done on the back end -- but I’ll definitely try and find out tomorrow. It’s possible I can call up classifications by entering zipcodes. Not every neighborhood will be categorized, but I’ll see what I can find out.

Genuinely, genuinely the Sonic Movie looks like a trainwreck and not even in like, a “it’s fun because it’s bad!” way. It looks like a group of old exec board members, whose only knowledge of the Sonic series is watching Green Hill Zone on youtube for like 2 seconds before going to the board meeting, got together and went “What’s the laziest way to do a movie about a talking animal while making it profitable to both young children and millenials?” and then compiled a list of movies that fit that genre (see: that one easter movie about the drumming rabbit)

New debate, new thoughts. Bernie was without a doubt the only good performance of the night, he did great and for over half the debate everybody was trying and failing to take him down and got shut down themselves. Oh and racist white gay butigieg with that bs about the racial divide living within him, yeah okay. Warren was the only other one worth talking about, and boy was she a trainwreck, talking over the moderators, never answering the question asked, shamelessly using the story of the guy with ALS to dodge questions, and i know most politicians do that, im not singling her out but come on for someone with her platform of empathy, bad fucking move. Inlcuding the other debate, only once has she answered the question asked, and it was the one about whether america should be allowed to use nukes. She was emotional here, fervent that america not use nukes and shocked and upset that bullock suggest otherwise, she believes in this to her core. Which is why its strange that her answers on healthcare are so comparitively empty. She parrots bernie's policy and plans and even though he already confirmed a small tax increase on the middle class, she wont own up to it, despite talking about the literal same bill. I do believe she will implement a green new deal and medicare for all like bernie, but its clear from the nuke question she doesnt believe in it, and is sponsoring it because people want it and shes bandwagoning for the millenial vote. ALso, svaed for last because its infuriating, when asked if she identifies herself as a capitalist to distance herself from bernie, she replies yes im a capitalist because i fight, like are you fucking serious with that dumbass bullshit answer? The production is a trainwreck. This new crew is useless. And where is my new assistant? I swore I was never gonna be that guy with an assistant and now I have three. What was her name again? Amy.. We can’t blame the new writers and producers for wanting to be timely. Their goal is to appeal to a new generation -with younger characters- and address the most pressing issues women face nowadays (the “case of the week” part is about a professor who’s a predator). So let me rephrase it: the Charmed reboot is fiercier, funnier and more feminist than the original show. I’m not sure it sounds better but you’ll have to deal with it! That being said, the script tries way too hard to look “woke”. More subtlety wouldn’t have hurt anyone. They’re clearly making a statement here, let’s just hope they relax a little after the pilot, not making it too heavy all the time.

The whole Mel character, the middle sister who’s a passionate feminist and an outspoken activist -with the ability to freeze time- sounds a little too cliché, especially when you add the fact that she’s a lesbian. Hear me out: it’s great there’s a lesbian sister in the show, that’s one of the reasons why this version is modern. BUT it might have been more interesting to give the feminist attribute to another character, so we don’t fall into the usual “feminists are homosexuals (who hate men)” trap. Still, she’s probably the most interesting character here; after the family tragedy, she becomes angry and violent, she loses her way, she loses her girlfriend too -Soo Jin, who’s a detective in Hilltowne- so she adds darkness to a show that’s not light-hearted. Maybe that’s the biggest difference with the original Charmed: it can be funny because the dialogues are sometimes great and inspired -and we recognize the Jane The Virginteam here- but it’s pretty gloomy overall. The family manor is right in the middle of frightening woods, not in a sunny street of San Francisco. The opening sequence leans towards the horrific genre, with jump scares, fog, crows, murder of crows even… Same goes for the end with a Ouija board in the attic, and whisperings… A totally different atmosphere that is closer to Buffy, Riverdale or American Horror Story than good ol’ Charmed.

The younger sister, Madison, is the complete opposite of Mel. She’s 18, your typical millenial girl who’s worried about her social identity -too bad for her, she can hear other people’s thoughts- and she’s not happy at all to discover that she’s a witch. She has a wry sense of humor and she’s part of a sorority that will probably play a major role in the subsequent episodes, between the mean girls she wants to be friends with and the weird guys that are lurking around her. She will probably become a fan favorite. Last but not least, the older sister who didn’t know she had sisters until recently: Macy, a “science nerd” in her late 20s with a Ph.D. in quantum physics. She’s moving with her boyfriend named Galvin to Hilltowne to do lab work. She possesses the power of telekinesis. Her love story is already totally boring and I’m not sure Gavin will stick around much longer. Finally, there’s Harry, the girls’ “devilishly handsome” advisor, refered to as a “whitelighter” like Leo was, who adds a lot of humor and eccentricity whenever he appears. Think Eliot in The Magicians. But he’s not exactly who he says he is…

You’re probably wondering if the Book of Shadows is still part of the story and the answer is yes. The Power of Three? Yes, of course. Are the Halliwell sisters part of the story or even refered to? Not at all. I don’t think they will ever exist in this version. It’s not a sequel. If the overall tone is darker, they kept most of the original show’s premice. They’re still the most powerful witches ever known, destined to protect both innocents and the world at large from demons and other devil creatures. They didn’t lie: it really is an update of the same concept with characters that are more diverse. It’s not just using the show’s name and popularity to do something totally different. It’s fast-paced, with transitions throughout that consist of three quick cuts which are in fact small slices of each women’s stories. Think How To Get Away Murder. They do something similar. I find it irritating on paper here and it doesn’t add much but why the hell not after all… We’re promised monsters of the week cases as well as ongoing stories about the witches’ love lives while the bigger picture is probably kept for later, once they will be familiar with their powers.

The Charmed fans will be pissed to read this but this pilot script is pretty decent. It’s not an insult to the original though they’re doing like The Halliwells never existed (and some might find that insulting, I get it). It’s modern and as feminist as they claimed, though subtlety is not their strong suit. The characters have things to say and stories to tell that should be heard in those troubled times. In other words, it’s not revolutionary in any way but it’s not the trainwreck haters would like it to be and there’s really nothing to rally against. Ignore it, don’t watch it, just let it be. There are more important battles worth fighting for.
