Another of the finds in my pitfall traps: a millipede (there were several but this was my favourite picture of one). Millipedes make up the Class Diplopoda, distinct from Insects and Spiders. They're almost all detritivores (which means they feed on decaying matter), lumbering along slowly through the undergrowth and through the soil. One of the most surprising things I found in Cambodia 🇰🇭 was not just the beautiful temples and ancient history but the animal life, take this gigantic millipede for example! must of been 20-30+cm long. I found it scuttling around a quiet leafy area a stones throw from one of the numerous ancient ruins in the protected national park, this area holds all of the temples/shrines and the old capital of Cambodia, namely Angkor Wat. American Giant Millipede (Narceus americanus) in Turkey Point Provincial Park this month. This is North America's largest Millipede, this one was at least 10 cm long. Millipedes are generally feeders on decaying plant material, plowing through the leaf litter environment on their many legs. These Millipedes lay only a single egg, and when the young hatch they have only three pairs of legs.
