Please do tell
ok so baseline is that the wagner group is a private military group linked closely (until now) to the russian state/putin himself, which was widely understood (again, until now) to essentially just be an arm of the russian military deployed to deny state culpability in various military interventions. like Russia will be like "oh we're not involved in [insert country or conflict here]" but then Wagner pops up there and we're all like okay yeah sure lmao
they rose to prominence in the 2014 invasion of Ukraine but have since been used by Russia to expand Russian influence and military presence across the world. basically they provide various regimes with military support/join civil conflicts on the side Russia wants to win to overall promote Russian presence, sphere of influence, etc.
What this coup means for Ukraine and the current war we have yet to see, wagner is NOT like. good. like they're a private miltary they're fascist and have killed many many civilians and committed many human rights abuses. so wagner taking control would not be good at all. but my understanding is that there's a very high chance this insurrection (not really a coup as they aren't technically state military) will fail, and if/when it does, that could be good news for Ukraine as they've been fighting as a major part of Russian forces in Ukraine and if they pull out it would destabilize Russia's attack. And it looks like Wagner is currently pulling out of Ukraine to head towards Moscow - and they're so closely linked to Russia's official forces that some people think other Russian military forces might just kinda follow them in confusion and/or just have nobody to command them without Wagner being there
(edit to clarify that I'm not saying here that I want Putin to remain in power, rather that we shouldn't be cheering for Wagner as any sort of "good guys." I do think any sort of destabilization of Putin is a good thing and that's exactly what's happening)
However I'm also concerned about what's gonna happen in the rest of the world - Wagner has been increasing their presence across Africa recently (since ~2017) which has widely been understood as a part of Russian foreign policy to increase their footprint/influence in the region (aka exploit the countries they operate in for natural resources), and they've also been known to operate in Syria and Venezuea. So if Wagner/Prigozhin (the leader) have broken from the Putin regime, will they still be carrying out Russian interests abroad? Whose Russian interests? will they just carry on as a mercenary group to hire unattached to a political regime? What damage will it have to Russia (or at least Putin's Russia)'s global influence if a major arm of their foreign policy/diplomacy strategy has broken from the government? etc etc

Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi jailed for five years for corruption
Deposed Myanmar leader denies allegations she accepted gold and hundreds of thousands of dollars from senior official
A court in military-ruled Myanmar sentenced deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to five years in jail on Wednesday after finding her guilty in the first of 11 corruption cases against her.
The latest case centred on allegations that she accepted 11.4 kilograms of gold and cash payments totalling $600,000 from Phyo Min Thein, the former chief minister of the city of Yangon.
Tumblr media
Ms Suu Kyi, the figurehead of Myanmar’s struggle against military dictatorship, was ousted by the military last year.
She denied accepting the gold and money, calling the allegations absurd.
It was not immediately clear if Ms Suu Kyi, 76, would be transferred to a prison to serve the sentence.
The Nobel laureate, who led Myanmar for five years, has been charged with at least 18 offences.
She has already been sentenced to six years in jail in other cases and the maximum punishment under the Anti-Corruption Act is 15 years in prison and a fine.
Convictions in the other cases could bring sentences of more than 100 years in prison for Ms Suu Kyi, who previously spent years in detention for defying military rule.
Her trial in the capital Naypyidaw was closed to the media, diplomats and spectators, and her lawyers were barred from speaking to the press.
Since her arrest, Ms Suu Kyi has been held at an undisclosed location. Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing previously said she could remain there after convictions in December and January for comparatively minor offences.
A spokesman for the junta was not immediately available for comment and the miltary has refused to allow her visits, including by a special South-East Asian envoy trying to end the crisis.
Nay Phone Latt, a former official in Ms Suu Kyi’s ousted party, told Reuters any court decisions were temporary, because military rule would not last long.
“We do not recognise the terrorist junta’s rulings, legislation, or the judiciary … the people do not acknowledge them either. I don’t care how long they want to sentence, whether it’s one year, two years, or whatever they want. This won’t last.”
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the coup and the international community has dismissed the trials as farcical and demanded Ms Suu Kyi’s release.
The coup led to mass protests and a bloody crackdown on dissent, with more than 1,400 civilians killed, a local monitoring group has said.

Follow the compass West to find honor.
In the western part of the region lives a group nestled deep within the towering pines of the Ironwood, dedicated to an orderly life of neatly defined expectations and the satisfaction of being dutiful.
Are you a lost wanderer, looking for somewhere to call home, but needing a certain kind of strictness to keep yourself in line? The Empire beckons you West.
Tumblr media
At a Glance
Deity: Loyalty/Fierceclaws Element / Season: Earth, Autumn Main Teachings: Duty and Honor Lifestyle: Strict and very orderly - very miltary-like Education: Trainees begin their education at 15 moons and are trained by the most senior soldiers Leadership: Military dictatorship - one General in charge, whose orders are expected to be followed; strong, centralized government Naming: PrefixSuffix system; either the prefix or the suffix is given at birth and the missing half is earned at graduation; intimidating names are favored, with nature themes common; ex: Silkweaver, Ironteeth
Territory
Region: The Ironwood Camp: The Iron Stronghold Environment: Dense coniferous forest, thick underbrush, shadowy, lots of water Flora: Shrubs/bushes, trees (mostly pine, some spruces/firs/aspens/cedars) Fauna: Large ungulates (elk, moose), squirrels, rodents (voles/mice/shrews), birds, wolves, mountain lions, foxes
The Empire Throughout History
The Founders (Years 0-13)
Founded by Ironteeth and his ragtag, nomadic group of rogues. After they settle in the Ironwood, they begin being attacked by a neighboring pack of wolves - Iron turns all able-bodied members of his group into a force to be reckoned with, after Fierceclaws visited him in a dream, and became the first General.
The Age of Sucession (Years 14-27)
Ironteeth has died. Several cats vie for his position, which ultimately leads to violence. Only one survives. Silkweaver has become the new General and declares the Empire as entering into a new era. This also solidifies the changing of leadership within the Empire as their infamous coup d'etat.
The First Compass War (Years 28-34)
The Empire, under the guidance of the blood-thirsty Silkweaver, begins pressing into Wing territory for better hunting. Despite the Wings confronting them, rightfully upset, the Empire soldiers do not take them seriously. Silkweaver's convincing remarks on the weakness of the Wings and the Empire's superiority have taken grasp within the soldiers.
As tensions with the Wings turn to violence and the Empire launches an attack on Goldenleaf Grotto itself, the soldiers slowly become disillusioned with Silkweaver's leadership. They are losing sight of their motivations, and there now have been too many Empire deaths to forgive. Murmurs of dissent begin to come from Silkweaver's ranks.
The emergence of what is now known as field medics keeps the death toll from getting too high, but Sagesifter becomes one of the most outspoken dissenters against the War, their newfound position as a battle-healer giving them an authoritative edge many soldiers find themselves following - especially because Sagesifter likely saved their life.
The Empire faces off with the Wings, and the Clowder, one last time, only to be shocked and horrified when Loyalty moves to strike down Silkweaver; however, the sister of a since-murdered Feather emerges from the river to rip her apart instead. Upon vanishing again, after declaring that the War is over, the sister gains the moniker Estelar and becomes the first ruler of the Fury.
The War of Flames and Flood (Years 35-39)
The Empire hides away post-War, ashamed and in disarray. The effects of the War have been felt strongly by the soldiers, many of them either guilt-ridden or struggling to unlearn Silkweaver's propaganda.
After a period of recovery, Iceheart becomes the new General.
The Golden Age (Years 40-47)
The Empire emerges from their self-imposed exile. Iceheart has chosen to focus on the Empire's improvement, abandoning the group's previous vie for territory gain.
Trade is established between the newly-four groups, and Iceheart has put in effort into helping repair relationships. The soldier training process is also solidified.
The Second Compass War (Years 48-52)
The Empire knows nothing of Scorch's plans to frame them for the murder of the Fury's royal family, until Scorch's mother informs all of the leaders after his murder. Iceheart is livid, and agrees to head north to help clear up the confusion with the other leaders; however, they end up encountering a Fury on the way by the name of Wynather, alongside the Wing assassin's mangled body. Wynather waves off the other leaders, claiming that they knew the truth of the assassinations and no harm was done, and announced themself the new Monarch in the North.
The Council of the Four Points (Year 53)
Iceheart comes up with the idea to meet every moon to discuss grievances and any other updates between groups to avoid miscommunications. The other's agree - nowadays, the leaders often skip the meetings and entrust their Ambassadors with the honor.
The Wolf Queen (Years 54-Present)

Myanmar’s civilian National Unity Government (NUG) has responded to the “five-point consensus” on the crisis in the country agreed by ASEAN leaders in Jakarta on April 24, saying that the discussions didn’t reflect the true situation and aspirations of Myanmar’s people.
Prime Minister Mahn Winn Khaing Thann of the NUG also rejected the first point of the consensus, which states that “all parties shall exercise utmost restraint”, as wrong because the sole perpetrator of the violence is the military.
“I wish to highlight that the violence is one-sided and committed by only one party,” he was quoted as saying in the NUG statement released on Tuesday in response to the ASEAN-junta consensus.
The regional bloc declined to invite representatives of the NUG recently formed by elected lawmakers from the 2020 general election, and which has the mandate and support of the Myanmar people. Instead ASEAN invited coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to the summit, which comes after at least 750 civilians have been killed by the regime’s forces.
Prime Minister Mahn Winn Khaing Thann said that while the NUG didn’t have the opportunity to brief the bloc about the daily reality of life under military rule that the people of Myanmar face, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was given the opportunity to justify the military’s actions regarding law and order and stability in the country. That is despite the fact that the documented visual and reported evidence points to the contrary.
The five-point consensus released hours after the ASEAN meeting on Saturday lists five points: 1) the immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar and that all parties shall exercise utmost restraint; 2) constructive dialogue among all parties concerned to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the people; 3) mediation to be facilitated by an envoy of ASEAN’s chair, with the assistance of the secretary-general; 4) humanitarian assistance provided by ASEAN’s Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre); and 5) a visit by the special envoy and delegation to Myanmar to meet all parties concerned.
Many people in Myanmar are distressed by the first item and disappointed by ASEAN’s exclusion of the NUG from the summit, and believe it shows that ASEAN does not understand the true situation in Myanmar.
Since the Feb. 1 coup, human rights violations such as the use of excessive or lethal force against unarmed civilians have been committed exclusively by the military. Just hours after the announcement of the five-point consensus, the military and police were harassing people who were banging pots and pans in protest at the junta, the prime minister said in the statement.
The prime minister called on ASEAN in the statement to engage with the NUG as the true representative government of the people of Myanmar. He also called for the NUG to be consulted on the ASEAN envoy’s mission and mandate, humanitarian assistance mission and also to establish accountability mechanisms for monitoring the regime’s compliance with the five-point consensus.
The statement added that while it appreciated that ASEAN wishes to facilitate constructive dialog among key stakeholders, there must be an unconditional release of political prisoners, including President U Win Myint and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, before any such dialog can take place.
The bloc failed to urge the military to release the political prisoners arrested by the regime since the coup, while only some ASEAN leaders have called individually for that. At least 4,484 people have been arrested since the military overthrew the elected civilian government. 3,441 of them, including elected leaders, lawmakers, activists and student protesters, are still being detained by the junta.
The NUG prime minister expressed his thanks to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for reiterating their call for the release of political prisoners in the Tuesday statement.
The NUG also stressed the importance of including representatives of the civil disobedience movement and ethnic armed organizations in the dialog process to ensure that all voices against military rule in Myanmar are heard by ASEAN.
During the meeting with the assembled leaders of Southeast Asian nations, the coup leader said he is not opposed to a role for the bloc but made no vows to end the use of force or to free detainees.
In an announcement made on Monday, two days after the meeting, the coup leader said he would carefully consider ASEAN leaders’ recommended steps for solving the political crisis in his country after the situation stabilizes.

Occidentalism in the orient
A natural experiment in the absence of colonialism occurred in Thailand. While the British and other European powers were encroaching on South Asia, Thailand, or, rather, Siam, evicted all Europeans, and continued in isolation for the next 150 years.  It is, therefore, one of the few developing countries never to have fallen under Western colonialism. After the establishment of a constitutional monarchy by the military in 1932, four decades of rule by a military-bureaucratic elite ensued. The period can be divided into two eras: the first from 1932 -57 when some electoral activities were tolerated, and the second from 1957 - 73, when even the semblance of democracy was dispensed with (Anek Laothamatas, “Thailand and Indonesia: Bureaucratic Transformation”, ed. Colin Mackerras, Eastern Asia: An Introductory History (Melbourne: Longman Cheshire, 1994), p 425).
There had never been in Thailand political parties and interest groups to challenge the governing elite precisely because Thailand had not been colonised and had not produced a mass nationalist movement. In many Third World countries, anticolonial struggles served to mobilise much of the people, generating mass political action and forming the basis for popular participation after independence (p 426). As late as 1955, a foreign observer could say: “The contented Siamese, traditionally uninterested in politics and with an ingrained talent for obedience, have never shown the slightest desire for democracy - a phenomenon disconcerting to well-intentioned western visitors. If they are now to enjoy the benefits of democracy it is clear that these will have to be imposed from above.”
Contrast the supine Siamese submission, as perceived by westerners, to the - literally - riotous politics of India in the 1950s: heedless of the clamour for linguistic states, Nehru was woken from his “nation-building” slumbers by the death-by-starvation of Potti Sriramulu insisting on a Telugu-speaking state in 1952 (perhaps not coincidentally, Bangladesh traces its linguistic origins to the student movement of 1952). There followed a reorganisation of states along linguistic lines in the 1950s and 1960s. The philosophy of de Maistre, Herder and Fichte had found its way into the oriental mind.
Unsurprisingly for a rapidly changing economy and society, in 1973 college students, mostly of Chinese ancestry, led a popular uprising against the military regime. The Thai economy grew by 8.4% on average per year in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Under a rehabilitated monarchy, mass political participation imploded: in the next three years there were 1,333 strikes and 322 demonstrations as students cooperated with associations of peasants and workers pressing for social reform. In October 1976, the military, this time with the backing of the king, again assumed power against a backdrop of domestic unrest and communist takeovers in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. “Since then, the students, peasants and workers have been unable to regain the same political prominence (Laothamatas, p 426).”
Whatever residual Siamese passivity there remained has apparently come to an end: in 2014, protests against the government of Yingluck Shinawatra culminated in a military coup. After five years, Prayuth Chan-ocha was at last affirmed as prime minister by parliament on June 5th, 2019. Between 1932 and 2009, there were 18 military coups in Thailand, making the one in 2014 the nineteenth. A tolerance for military intervention clearly shows history at work in a direction contrary to that in South Asia, where military rule is regarded with repugnance by the elite: Occidentalism has not penetrated through the Siamese mind as it has done here. With the exception of the temporarily westernised students (whose behaviour is explained by the Dunning-Kruger effect - the overconfidence of incompetent people, mentioned above), Thais have never developed “outgroup favouritism”, for the simple reason that they had never been dominated by an outgroup.
Today, income per head in Thailand stands at $16,000 and in India at $6,800, according to the Human Development Report. While Thailand ranks 77th worldwide in the Human Development Index, India ranks 129th. Clearly, civilians have not done a better job.
