After finishing the Discworld series, I have decided to create the various stores and shops mentioned throughout the series as 1:12 scale minis. As the stores are completed, they will form The Maul (first appeared in Hogfather).
Tumblr media
I live in EBF (East Bumble Fuck); therefore, all supplies are ordered from various Mom-and-Pop miniature stores across North America. This causes items to trickle in Willy Nilly and has become part of my ADHD-like process. As items are delivered, I create that portion of whichever store and then move on.
Tumblr media
To date: Madam Sharn’s store (from Unseen Academicals) is just about finished.

There are glass doors for the chain mail shelves planned and I’m currently taking suggestions on “filler” items that should be part of the store.

I'm sure there was an easier way to make a nice looking diarama floor, but peeling off some old recycled thin stick-on wood textured wallpaper stuff and cutting 67 individual floorboards was the way I decided to do it 😤

Crumley’s is almost complete as well.

Now, I am aware that fluorescent lighting isn’t Discworld cannon; however, the bright, almost harsh lighting is something I vividly remember in every toy store of my childhood.
Clockson/Lobsang’s time piece shop has started to form. The lighting will be much different going forward.

Charles Willson Peale was one of the most popular portrait artists of the 18th century. Having made countless numbers of paintings, it isn't surprising to find John Laurens' portrait among his work. Two of the miniatures currently in public possession hold an interesting history of their own right, aside from being the only portrait known to be illustrated in life, while John was living.
Tumblr media
This first miniature holds the most interest to me, as it's lineage isn't quite clear. According to Peale's manifest, he was commissioned two miniatures for J. Laurens, one done in September / October of 1780. Listed as having, a "dark blue uniform coat with lemon yellow facings and waistcoat [and a] Background with grays and yellows" , it stands to reason that this particular miniature is the one referenced. The most common assumption is that Laurens had this created for his wife, Martha, as a gift to be delivered when he traveled to France. The earliest mention I have found concerning Laurens' appointment as ambassador is December 23, 1780, three months after the creation of this piece. Presumably, and given the ardent arguments between Congress on the matter, Laurens would have had little knowledge of his to-be voyage in September of 1780. Certainly his father could have mentioned he was a person of interest, but up until the notion was passed there were other candidates on the table, and Lauren's zeal was not loved by all members of Congress. Knowing specifically when it was made raised a few questions, one of the most popular pertaining to the possibility of Hamilton having been with Laurens during it's creation. It is possible, if not probable, that Hamilton and Laurens had miniatures created while Hamilton visited Laurens during his probation. Most curious for me what how it came into public curation. Similar to other artifacts relating to Laurens, this piece also found it's way into an auction house then later to a proper museum. Unfortunately, auction houses are not known for their transparency on how, or even when, they acquired items, making it very difficult to trace. Currently held by the Met Museum in New York, this piece was purchased from an auction house with the support of an anonymous donor, an unnamed woman, in 2009.

The second miniature, above, was owned by William Jackson. Jackson, the secretary of J. Laurens on his emissary mission to France, held a fondness of Laurens. His commissioning of this miniature, also by Peale, and the gemstone inlay gives a solid impression of the affection Jackson held for Laurens. Embedded with garnets and gold trim, the words "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" surround Laurens. Translating to “It is sweet and fitting to die for the homeland”, these same words appear on Laurens' tombstone. Listed in Peale's leger as "c.1784", this is suspected to be commissioned by Jackson on behalf of Henry Laurens upon his return to America. Although this is plausible enough without primary sources to confirm, it is curious that this piece would not find its way into the Laurens family, even after Jackon's death. This particular miniature would be donated to city of Philadelphia by none other than Ann Jackson, daughter of William Jackson in 1876.
