spreadsheet cleanup STEPFORD CUCKOOS
ComicVine issues: 1600~1700 Fandom appearances: ~320 across 14 variants 3 video games
I never added them because conceptually they're just “what if: a hivemind of teen Emmas”
But statistically they do merit an @MCOCwishlist listing.

Notes
The Cuckoos were developed by the Weapon Plus (“Weapon X”) Program, from eggs Sublime harvested (without consent) from Emma Frost. The resulting Weapon XIV comprised a thousand cloned daughters with perfected diamond form and a telepathic hive mind. The purpose of this “Thousand-in-One” was to capture, harness, and control the Phoenix Force for Sublime’s nefarious intent to eradicate all mutants in a Cerebro-like effect. While the majority of the thousand lay dormant, five of the sisters infiltrated Xavier Academy as students calling themselves a Five-in-One: Sophie, Phoebe, Irma, Celeste, and Esme. (In school, Irma originally went by the nickname Mindee.) These five—or fewer, depending who remains surviving at any time—are the Stepford Cuckoos.
While the Cuckoos tend to operate as a unit, they have individual personalities, drives, and interests.
Plot tensions circle around their unity or individuality or lack thereof, depending on factors such as the girls’ varying levels of:
chemical state (classically certain members’ exposure and/or addiction to the powers-enhancing drug Kick);
individual willingness to submit to their created villainous fate (nature) versus their heroic training (nurture);
individual (or, sometimes, apparently shared group) romantic interests;
exposure to, involvement with, or possession by cosmic or astral beings or phenomena (most notably the Phoenix Force)
Three-in-One. [SPOILERS] Sophie died in combat leading the hive mind while amplified by Kick; Esme had a hand in that and a murder attempt on Emma while also under the influence of Kick and also was killed. As a result the original five-person squad was reduced to the more iconic and recognizable triplet team of Phoebe, Irma, and Celeste.
Krakoa. [SPOILERS] Predictably, the deceased sisters were eventually brought back, so the Five-in-One has been recently reinstated.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
Supporting Character Supplemental - The Stepford Cuckoos
After the confrontation with Trevor Fitzroy, Emma Frost was plunged into a coma for a year. During her unconscious state, Dr. John Sublime harvested over a thousand embryonic eggs from her ovaries for him to experiment upon.
The Weapon Plus program then used these eggs to create dozens of identical Mutant girls in the hope of developing a powerful weapon capable of killing every Mutant on Earth by combining their telepathic abilities. The project was designated Weapon XIV and the girls were incubated and artificially aged inside the subterranean level of The World. While most of these girls remained dormant, five were sent to infiltrate the Xavier Institute as student sisters to hone their talents for Sublime's purpose.
After the Xavier Institute went public, the quintuplet sisters (Sophie, Phoebe, Mindee, Celeste, and Esme) were enrolled. So to protect their secret origins, the girls unconsciously placed mental blocks in the minds of the faculty, preventing them from investigating their background.  The sisters themselves were largely unaware of their background nor ulterior  The quintette came to be known as the ‘Stepford Cuckoos’ (a play on the two science fiction novels, The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin and The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham).
With their significant telepathic powers, The Cuckoos quickly became prized pupils of Emma Frost (who was entirely unaware of their connections to one another).  The sister would go on to become an important part of the student body.  Sophie sacrificed herself to end the threat posed by The Omega Gang and Esme was later killed by Xorn.  The Five-in-One became the Three-in-One and it was not until the Warsong event that the Cuckoos ulterior programming became activated.
The Phoenix Force had returned to earth, searching for a host as suitable as Jean Grey had once been.  The cosmic entity happened upon the psychic abilities of the Cuckoos and reached out to touch their minds.  This had the effect of activating the Weapons Plus nano-bots that had laid dormant within the girls’ psychology.  They traveled back to The World so to activate the Thousand-Who-Are-One protocol which would create a telepathic surge that kill every Mutant on earth.  With he aide of The X-Men, the Cuckoos were able to resist both Sublime and The Phoenix Force and they destroyed the hive mind, killing the remanning clones.
Phoebe, Mindee and Celeste returned to the Xavier Institute and now began to show greater independence from one another and more distinct individual personalities.
Sophie and Esme were resurrected by The Five following the establishment of Krakoa and the sisters were reunited.  They continue to serve the X-Men and Krakoa.  They additionally maintain a sometimes tumultuous mother/daughter relationship with Emma Frost.
A version of The Stepford Cuckoos featured in the Fox television series, The Gifted, portrayed by actress Skyler Samuels.  The sister first appeared in the pages of New X-Men Vol. 1 #118 (2001).

Unpopular Opinions:
X-men: Evolution is the best version of any adaptation of the X-men.
Madelyne Pryor didn’t have to die or turn evil. And even if she did turn evil for a bit, there is no reason why she couldn’t have been redeemed and still be happily married to Scott.
If you want to make an audience root for and empathize with a character who’s known for their villainy for as long as their first appearance, that’s fine. The solution to do this is NOT to take another character who’s known to be good and heroic and suddenly make them secretly morally grey, and then an outright even worse villain so that the other villain looks better and more noble by comparison without changing their motives.
The only good thing to come out of the mutants moving to Krakoa is the Hellfire Gala. I like some of the the outfits the marvel characters get to wear.
Irene Adler should have stayed dead. So should have a number of other mutants.
The Stepford Cuckoo’s were better off when it was just the 3-in-1 (Mindee/Irma, Celeste, and Phoebe) who also explored their own individuality; Esme and Sophie should be their own individuals as well.
Tension =/= always romance
Jean and Scott either should have just chosen each other or the other people they were involved with. Polyamory is actually not the ultimate solution for all love triangles/dodecahedrons.
Havok deserves more than pining after his evil ex-sister-in-law.
There was no reason for Dorma to be killed off except to make Namor unhappy and single.
Gwenpool deserves good things.

Number one, Julian "Hellion" Keller. He literally has her team's name as his own, half of her bad blood against Laura came from her fearing she would hurt him. Emma would probably kill Julian's parents to officially make him a Frost, she literally did the: "Come to my office, I will scold you." to do nothing but praise him and she adores him so much she projected her daddy issues and fear of parenting into her relationship with him.
Tumblr media
Number two, Celeste Cuckoo. As much as everyone is like: "Esme is the favorite Cuckoo!" let us be real, Emma at a certain point only refered to Celeste instead of the Cuckoos in general. Which like... fair, she was the first one break into her own and start to take a leadership role.
Tumblr media
Number three, Kitty Pryde. We have to be honest, if Emma could she would absolutely exchange a Cuckoo for Kitty in order to have her as her official daughter. It would probably be Sophie... it would be Sophie.
Tumblr media
Number four, Esme Cuckoo. She likes that she is a crazy ass femme fatale yet it is obvious that Emma would kill her if needed so she truly acknowledges her as a true Frost.
Tumblr media
Number five, Monet St. Croix. If there was a student on Gen X that Emma ended up adoring enough to turn on her teaching streak back it was Monet.
Tumblr media
Number six, Phoebe Cuckoo and Mindee Cuckoo. I do not think Emma has been capable of telling them apart since they returned to blonde hair.
Tumblr media
Number seven, Sophie Cuckoo. Emma, why did you carry Sophie's dead body just to prove to Quentin how he had fucked up? I know that the Diamond Form fucks with your feelings but come on.
Number eight, Manuel de la Rocha. If Emma had had nine seats in her table for the characters in this list she would hide one if Manuel was close, if Emma buys Christmas presents she would give Manuel coal, if Emma ever gave Julian Frost International she would record it and and show it to Manuel, if she had to make a team and she needed someone that could control emotions she would activate Cerebra and find a new mutant.

So Emma Frost and Steve Rogers have been shown almost kinda flirting or sorta-flirting at each other in a bunch of books since the first Hellfire Gala. And now Emma’s guest-starring in an upcoming issue of Captain America and the writer of that book has declared she’s his new favorite character to write.
Is this how crack ships finally rise? Is another Iconic X-meme on its way to fruition?
(I’m not like, attached to this ship at all, it probably wouldn’t even crack my Top Fifty if not for its Iconic X-Meme status giving me all the lulz, but I will be wildly entertained if they end up becoming a thing, all because of....a Meme.)
Context for those not familiar with the meme in question:
So Emma’s daughters are the Stepford Cuckoos, the Five-in-One: Sophie, Esme, Phoebe, Mindee and Celeste. They’re not her daughters by birth of course, but they do consider her their mother and she considers them her daughters, as the Weapon Plus project did genetically engineer them from Emma. They have her telepathy, her ability to shift into a diamond form, and their own unique mutation of a hive mind/telepathic gestalt...
And its that latter part that has long had people noting that they’re not actually genetically identical clones of Emma’s, as was originally believed. Plus there’s the fact that they’re naturally blonde. Emma is not.
So, people long headcanoned (as in for almost twenty years at this point), that the Cuckoos are literally her daughters and not clones or genetic derivations. That just like Laura Kinney was once believed to have begun as an attempt at cloning Logan but later was retconned to be his biological offspring, engineered from his sperm and an egg donor....that the Cuckoos have the same relation to Emma, just the inverse of that.
And this was eventually confirmed in canon, with it retroactively clarified that the Cuckoos were engineered using Emma’s eggs, not cloned.
So for years, the only part of the Cuckoos’ origin that’s still been up in the air, has just been...who was the sperm donor used to conceive them? Some anonymous rando? Or like....does that not actually fit the Weapon Plus project’s methodology at all?
See, the final piece of the meme in question is that canonically, the Weapon Plus project, which for decades in the comics has been known for experimenting on mutants and weaponizing them in various ways, in order to create super-soldiers and biological weapons...it began as an offshoot of the United States’ WWII program...Project Rebirth.
Aka the program that created the Super-Soldier serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America.
Steve Rogers is canonically considered by the Weapon Plus program to be Weapon I. Their first success. Logan was Weapon X. The Stepford Cuckoos were Weapon XIV.
So.....the Weapon Plus program needed a sperm donor for their latest attempt at mutant super-soldiers.....and they have all kinds of samples from their first, long ago success....their Big Success that they’re super proud of even if he has no idea of his connection to them and would likely disavow any link between them if he could because the Weapon Plus program is all kinds of yikes....
Well, why WOULDN’T they think its a great idea to combine the DNA of the guy they consider the greatest physical powerhouse they’ve ever ‘made’ with the DNA of the woman they picked due to being a mental powerhouse?
In conclusion, X-fans have spent fifteen years joking about the likelihood of Steve Rogers actually being Emma Frost’s baby daddy, the unnamed father of the Stepford Cuckoos, even if he, Emma, and the Cuckoos all probably have no idea thanks to all the secrecy surrounding the Weapon Plus project.
Although you know who might actually have a REALLY good way of figuring out any possible connection there?
The Five. The mutants whose resurrection process involves Josh Foley’s power to read, analyze and manipulate DNA in all kinds of ways.
And who all - for the grand finish to Judgment Day - just used their powers to resurrect a non-mutant: Steve Rogers.
So....imagine if Josh, who has resurrected at least two of the Cuckoos before, and is thus familiar with their DNA....were to absently think ‘huh, that’s weird’....as he just so happened to note some similarities or patterns in the DNA of this guy who SHOULDN’T be similar to any of the many mutants he’s helped resurrect as its not like he has any mutant relatives, right?
Right?
