SIX MONTHS AGO:
A chilly night welcomes my friend group as we make our way through a prestigious and crowded restaurant situated in the heart of Madrid.
Being born and raised in Spain´s capital city, the girls now walking into the facilities have been by my side my whole life; faith brought us together our first day of school, just three frightened little kids trying to survive elementary.
I like to believe that we complement each other, even if we hadn´t met all those years ago, life would have found a way to connect us.
A girl’s night out is a rare occurrence between us; always being on the shy side, we very much prefer staying in, drowning ourselves in sweet treats while marathoning our comfort romcoms.
The reason why we´re summoned tonight is quite simple… my very first broken heart.
You see, in an attempt to lighten the mood, my friends brought us to an extremely exclusive eatery, one where we clearly didn´t fit in. The difference was quite notorious, surrounded by leggy models and their handsome companions, I quite frankly begin to wonder why I ever agreed.
With a deep breath, I straighten my back and let the hostess remove my coat. “In for a penny, in for a pound” I think with a resigned shrug of the shoulders.
As we´re carried to our spot, I try and take the essence of the place in. I start noticing its eccentric décor, dim lights brightening the burgundy walls, leather booths scattered all over the classy tile floor.
What makes an ordinary dinner such a big success? Its bizarre modality.
Our table is filled with strangers, completely engulfed in their different conversations. The main reason for my friends to take us to this unconventional location was exactly this; the inexorable need to engage in conversations with foreign people.
The first round of dirty martinis arrives as the last costumers take their places next to me, with a lousy cheer I pour the drink down my throat, feeling its pleasant burning down my body, warming me up, making me forget.
“Easy there tiger”- the man sited by my side chuckles, gesturing towards my empty glass.
I take a moment to wander across his features. Thick eyebrows, big brown eyes, plump lips. Definitely attractive, exactly what I need.
A smile creeps up my face, the wires in my brain getting to work.
I notice an elegantly worn designer shirt hugging his chest, his forearms resting against the wooden surface, his attentive stare trying to read my thoughts.
“And you are?”- I condescendingly tease him.
“Carlos”- his hand travels to mine, embracing me with his warm- “Carlos Sainz.”
The subtle body hair covering his fist tickling my naked skin, igniting a fire deep inside me.
And in that moment, I simply knew there was no getting out, not anybody else as long as he kept staring at me like this, eating me raw with his gaze.
That was the first night I ever came back home with him.
————
FOUR MONTHS AGO:
Carlos is away for the weekend, oceans separating us, palpable distance every time he races through my mind.
I try convincing myself It’s the sex I miss, the obvious physical attraction, the invisible force that pulls us towards the other, the feeling of his warm skin being impossibly closer to mine.
Truth being told, I’m sitting immovable on my bed, nervously waiting for a call.
I can’t help but recall his soft locks intertwined with my fingers, his tongue inching towards my neck, how he never fails to make my blood boil with a simple grin.
My phone brings me out of my daydreams, screaming for attention as a call enters it. His name glistening on the screen, filling me with pure bliss and forcing me to hold my giggles.
Acting like a schoolgirl with a crush while being a full-grown adult… how pathetic!
Two rings go by before i pick up, bitting my bottom lip to keep my voice calm as if I wasn’t desperately clinging to it seconds ago.
“Gorgeous, you got a minute to spare?”- he asks, clear amusement in his tone, abusing the charm he knows he has.
“That depends, Carlos, who’s asking?”
I’m gobsmacked at how composed I sound, nowhere near how I actually feel.
My knuckles turn white from grasping my sheets.
“Don’t be like that, princess, I know you miss me”- his smile visible through his speech.
My heart skips a beat, can his words be revealing my true feelings?
“Oh honey, keep lying to yourself if it helps you sleep at night…”
I’m met with his scandalous laugh filling the line, raising my pulse until it’s beating on my ears.
Everything stops, everything keeps going.
I close my eyes in acknowledgement, being forced to admit what i’ve been denying ever since I met him.
Oh, how screwed I am!
———
TWO MONTHS AGO:
The music rumbles at the disco, throbbing on my skin with its intensity.
Being dragged to a hip party, my friends and I are bundled up in the comfort of our own group, dancing between ourselves.
As I rock my body to meet the pulsating rhythm, I embrace Carlos’s presence behind me, tightly grabbing my waggling hips.
He presses himself into me and I rub against his growing erection, purposely torturing him. His kisses start straying while sucking visible red marks into my neck.
His penetrating cologne invades my nostrils, clinging into my bare skin like a golden tattoo.
The mix of the alcohol I insisted on chugging and his hands shaping my whole body becoming intoxicating.
A foreign touch on my shoulder makes me open my eyes, leaving me to face my friend staring at me like i’ve grown a second head.
“You’re coming with me”- she pronounces as she drags me away from Carlos, who snorts in disbelief.
“What? Why?”- I ask as i’m forced to take a seat at the bar.
“Have you gone mad? You two were literally dry humping each other in the middle of the crowd!”- She hisses worriedly, forcing me to drink the water bottle she bought for me.
As she sits next to me, I prepare myself for the lecture she’s about to impart me, letting my eyes wonder across the dance floor.
I catch a glimpse of Carlos standing against a wall, hemmed by complete darkness, sometimes interrupted by one of the dj's lights.
When the spotlight lands on him, I start noticing the delicate hands hugging his broad shoulders, the almost nonexistent distance between him and the blonde caressing his cheeks.
Bile climbs up my throat, threatening to be ejected thanks to the scene before me.
Her lips all over his neck, staining the collar of his white shirt with lipstick.
Realizing i’m not paying an iota of attention to her, my friends follows my gaze stumbling across the sequence.
Effortlessly, she yanks me away from the enclosed space and into the garden.
Without being able to stop myself, I empty the contents of my stomach into the ground, constantly replaying the flashbacks of their sensual dance.
“Everything’s okay now, love”- My friend states while caressing my tangled up hair. Her fingertips come into contact with my cheeks, brushing my tears away.
Sobs are quick to scape my lungs, becoming more and more erratic as I imagine the second by second unfolding inside the disco.
———
PRESENT:
After running away from Carlos’s house, in the middle of a Madrilenian night, I’m fast to hide into the loneliness of my apartment.
I can’t even find comfort in blaming him as I was the one to agree with our “no exclusivity policy”, believing I could make it work.
How stupid of me to think I would be capable of not being trapped into his nets.
Clearly the only solution I can possibly come up with is crying it out, and that’s how I found myself in this situation; puffy eyes, completely ruined mascara, quivering eyes from shedding way too many tears.
Could I have been more stupid? I can’t even resonate one good reason why I would ever accept what he’s willing to offer me while wanting him in his entirety.
My determination is easily devastated as desperate fists bang against my door.
“Please, open up”- A too familiar voice implores from outside the apartment.
“I don’t ever wanna see you again”- I manage to scream through whimpers.
“I beg of you, please let me in! I swear I can explain.”
Standing right on the other side of the door, I feel my hand toying with the doorknob, trying to determinate whether or not to listen to his pleas.
“There’s nothing to explain, Carlos!”- I say, above a whisper, my voice to fragile for anything else.
“There’s been a while since i’ve been with anyone else, alright? Not since all I could think about was you!”
An unbreakable silence fills the hallways of the building, only the sound of his pantings and heavy breathing interrupting the stillness.
Without much hesitation, I open the hinges separating us.
Clearly, I was nowhere near prepared for the view before me; his full brown eyes now shimmering with unshed orbs, accumulated in his tear ducts.
“How about the girl from the voicemail?”- I ask, almost scared to find out this is all a product of my imagination.
“I know what that seemed like, but I promise you it’s not what you think!”- he says, piercing me with his gaze- “That was my ex girlfriend. She has a hard time letting go of me, even though there’s been more than a year since we’ve last been together. I never answer her calls and that’s why she’s getting more and more desesperate.”
Everything around me stops just to listen to his next words, my heart betting so out of control he might even hear it.
“Back at my apartment you told me you were enamored by me, well, there’s no use in trying to deny i’m in love with you”- he whispers, just loud enough for me to hear- “so much it’s physically painful, it’s all I can think about.”
My brain turned into mush as his confession sinks in. I almost want to laugh at how ridiculous the idea seems to me; the man I love, probably the only one i’ll ever love, stating that my feelings are reciprocate.
A sigh leaves my parted lips as a quiet tear runs down my face.
“I know i’ve made my mistakes and believe me when I say i’ll regret them every minute i’m on this earth, but I promise you, that if you give me the chance, i’ll make it up to you until my dying breath”- his voice sounds shaky, as if he couldn’t believe the words coming out of him.
I don’t think I ever reacted as fast as now, jumping into his embrace, wrapping my arms around his neck and my legs around his torso. Little giggles leave both of our mouths at the ridiculous situation.
“I love you”- He murmurs, muffled by the kisses he’s pressing against my checks.
“I love you too”- I answer back, with our bodies still entwined.

Hey all! So I wanted to take a few to introduce myself. Another blogger did this a few days back and I was just like omg I need to do that too!
So my name is Diane and I am at midlife now in terms of age. I have been married for over 20 years and have 2 amazing kids, a young man and a daughter.
We live in Tennessee. I love so many different genres of music - my playlist has everything from BTS to Carrie Underwood, Troye Sivan, Coldplay, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Aretha Franklin…you name it…it’s probably on my list!
Outside of BTS and Jikook I love spending time with my family, health, fitness, and making jewelry, and yes that includes BTS themed jewelry of course 😏
My favorite shows to watch are crime dramas and anything sci fi. I’m a huge Star Wars fan (I still remember going to see A New Hope when it came out!)
I have 5 fur babies- 4 dogs and a cat. We also have a gecko.
I am a cancer survivor, coming up on 8 years now. I've also had brain surgery - crazy crazy!
So now that that’s out of the way….let’s talk BTS.
I’ve always heard the saying: you don’t find BTS, BTS finds you when you need them. This is true for me too (more on that later ).
I discovered BTS when I heard Butter for the first time back in 2021. I thought it was a catchy song and wanted to know more about the band behind the song. And so it began. I looked up BTS on the internet and the first member I came across? Jimin of course. My first thoughts were my god he is gorgeous. And his voice - are you kidding me! I’ve been around a long time and I have never heard a voice like that! So of course I needed to know more. Next came Jungkook. Uh….wow! That man is beautiful too! And his voice! I mean come on!!!! I had never heard of kpop before BTS so I had no idea about the world of kpop or any of its inner workings.
So into the world of BTS I dove. I went on line and started watching their music videos and started listening to more of their music and really really liking it. I slowly discovered the world of BTS online; Bangtan Bombs, In The Soop, Lives, Run Episodes, etc. Of course, watching all of these...I started to wonder, what's up with Jimin and Jungkook? Definitely caught a different vibe from them. So.....started watching jikook videos. Then, I discovered GCFT - and that sealed the deal for me. No looking back from that point. I remember the first time I watched it (yup, like yourself Ive watched it way more than once!!!) I was blown away and my reaction was "these 2 are in love with each other".
I absolutely love love love Jimin and Jungkook (as I’m sure you can tell from my blog!). I love them as individuals and I love them as a couple. They have something SO very special together and I just get so much joy out of seeing their relationship now and how it has grown over the years. They went from seriously crushing on each other in the early days of BTS to being in a long term fully committed monogomous relationship. I do believe that they are in this for life and have committed to each other for life. What that exactly looks like I'm not sure as they are still "In the Closet". My hope for them is that one day they will be able to show us their love for each freely and openly.
So getting back to BTS and how they found me when I needed them. I am officially mid life, in my 50's. I have always been a stay at home mom. My son is high functioning autistic. Throughout his schooling we really struggled with finding the right fit for him academically. When we moved to TN we eventually decided to home school him which became a huge priority of mine. Homeschooling was not easy. When he graduated high school it was such an accomplishment. I will admit that it also left me very emotionally drained. Being a mom in general is really hard (best job in the world!!!). We always put our children first before everything else; it's just what we do.
As my children have grown and continued to become more independent I actually started thinking about what I want to do for me. It's a foreign concept because as a mom I've never really thought that way. That was right about the time I discovered BTS (see where I'm going with this?). Their message of love yourself, take care of yourself, was something that really resonated with me. I know it might sound crazy but that "glow up" that some people have experienced through BTS happened to me too. I have found the time to "love myself" as BTS says. I am really putting myself first for the first time in my life. I am still here for my family 100% but I am also finding the time to take care of myself :) I am on that journey to find balance in my life and BTS has most definitely played a big role in that!
I absolutely love BTS as a band and as individuals. I have really enjoyed getting to know them and I look forward to sharing my love of BTS and jikook with all y'all for years to come :) I have met some wonderful people through Tumblr; some of whom I have become very close to and consider dear friends; and I feel so grateful and blessed to have these peeps in my life. I am really excited to see what the future holds for these 7 incredibly talented young men who came into our lives.
One thing for sure, The Best is Yet To Come.
Xoxo 😘

Your pov
Being in bed all day might some wonderful to most but not when you're in this much pain.
I've been laying all day twisting and turning hoping that this pain would somehow come to an end. But these cramps seriously felt like they were never going to go away.
I was on my phone when i heard the front door open and your probably why would leave the front door open?
Well i left open knowing my boyfriend was coming over to spend some with each other, not having a glue what this guy was doing.
"Hey Hyunnie whats all that stuff for?"
He let out a soft chuckle "Their for you my love i know you have your period i got the notification from the tracking app."
"Hyunjin really? i dont even track my period."
"Well im doing it for you." He said as he let a cute laugh
"Okay baby i bought all your favorite snacks, a heating pad and of course all the kisses and cuddles you need."
"Oh thank you Jinnie you have no idea how much i needed this."
"I know baby its never easy going through this every month, I'll go heat up the heathing bad baby just give me a few minutes i'll be back"
He smiled at me while giving me a small peck on my lips.
He came back after around 10 minutes (i had to google how long it takes to heat up a heating pad😭)
He then placed the heating pad on my stomach and i couldn't help but look at while i was smilibg like a idiot, he was the only who could ever cheer me up within any moment im truly lucky to have him and call him mine.
"What are you thinking about honey."
"Nothing really just how lucky i am to be able to call you mine all you ever is make me like a princess."
"You don't do this only when i am on my period you do this at any given you can and Hyunnie i still can never find words to thank you."
"Thank me? Oh baby you never have to thank me not now not ever i'm supposed to do this is for you, its my job and duty for you to make sure you get treated like a princess, so you don't ever have to thank me."
I was starting to tear up a little just knowing my boy cares about me this much.
He definitely noticed as he was previously sitting on the bed now he changed positions now laying next to mine.
He leaned in a little slowly planting a soft kiss giving me all the butterflies.
I smiled in to the kiss as he caresses my cheek and delicately rub his thumb against it
I pulled away to bury my head in his chest, never wanting this moment to end, to always be with, stay with like this forever and never escaping from it.
Hyunjins pov
Y/n is always telling me how lucky she is to have me but god i am the most luckiest man to ever exist, to able be to get to love her, be with whenever i can, taking care of her like this i truly am the most blessed man ever and let alone to be able to call this girl my mine feels like a dream.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 21/10/2023 (Fred again../Jozzy, Troye Sivan, Drake/SZA)
Content warning: Brief mentions of mental health, violence, emotional abuse and death
For a second week, Kenya Grace leads the pack with “Strangers” - welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
Rundown
As always, we start the episode off with our notable dropouts, which are songs exiting the UK Top 75 - which is what I cover - after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. Firstly, we see a couple top 40 debuts exiting as soon as they entered, like “Normal People Things” by Lovejoy, “Toxic” by Nines featuring the Bad Boy Chiller Crew, “You & Me” by JENNIE and “American Town” by Ed Sheeran, as well as “bad idea right?” by Olivia Rodrigo prematurely dropping off thanks to the three-song rule. Then we have some of the more long-term hits dropping off like “The Weekend” by Stormzy and RAYE, “0800 HEAVEN” by Nathan Dawe and Joel Corry featuring Ella Henderson, “Popular” by The Weeknd, Playboi Carti and Madonna - that lasted way longer than I expected - and despite the recent gains, “Snooze” by SZA.
There is just… a lot of everything this week, but particularly gains. We do have some re-entries too, with “Style” by Taylor Swift back at #73 before her re-recording is even out, followed by “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi at #71 - what did I tell you? - and bizarrely enough, “Pompeii” by Bastille all the way up at #37 thanks to an orchestral version with Hans Zimmer. Alright then. As for our notable gains… let’s just run through it: “Another Love” by Tom Odell at #59, “Party All the Time” by Hannah Laing and HVRR at #58, “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift at #39, “On My Love” by Zara Larsson and David Guetta at #38, “Would You (go to bed with me?)” by Campbell and Alcemist at #35, “Got Me Started” and “Rush” both by Troye Sivan at #36 and #27 respectively - more on him later, “Back on 74” by Jungle at #25, “Stick Season” by Noah Kahan at #18 “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift at #14 thanks to the new versions, “DNA (Loving You)” by Billy Gillies featuring Hannah Boleyn at #12 and Mitski gets her first top 10 with the fantastic song “My Love Mine All Mine” at #8 - more on that later in the year.
As for our top five, we have “Baddadan” by Chase & Status and Bou featuring their posse at #5, “Water” by Tyla at #4, “greedy” by Tate McRae at #3, “Prada” by casso, RAYE and D-Block Europe at #2 and of course, “Strangers” at the very top. Now for our list of new songs, and it’s a lot - not a ton of it makes all too much sense either. As you can clearly tell with…
NEW ARRIVALS
#60 - “Just How You Like It” - K.A.D and Kak Hatt
Produced by K.A.D
I listened to a regional BBC Music Introducing show a couple weeks ago and heard a variety of stuff. One of the songs that stuck with me was a pretty mediocre but charming hip-house tune by some guy and it went “give me some time, I’ll have a Rover, lookin’ like a four-leaf clover, tell that girl, come closer”. It’s honestly probably terrible but it was at least honest fun, ending up comical not because he tried to be, but because it was a bit of a genuine fun, not trying too hard to offend anyone or even pretend he was a talented rapper. It was just stupid, and that was okay. This song, with the guy’s Bitmoji in the cover art, seems to think very highly of itself despite the fact it sounds worse than a clearly amateur recording from a guy who I’m sure has way less than the millions of streams this has. It’s pretty easy for me to tell when a song is devoid of personality or anything that personally interests me, but it’s rare that we can get a song devoid of talent - or at least any interest in getting any better. Hope this falls off quick.
#56 - “Black Hole” - boygenius
Produced by Collin Pastore, Jake Finch, Ethan Gruska, Calvin Lauber, Marshall Vore and boygenius
And for a change of pace, we have indie-rock threesome boygenius, consisting of critical darlings Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, with this coming as a bit of a surprise but they did carry some streams from the rest, a little accompanying EP for their debut album from earlier this year. I have yet to listen to any of the collaborative stuff from boygenius, even if I do like a fair bit of Baker’s and Dacus’ solo work. The song starts minimally with Baker despairingly mentioning the few stars she can see in the dark, as the lowered cacophony of strings, glitches, and plummering percussion start to rumble into prominence, battling with a lo-fi piano recording that just sits there, is let hang in a really awkward, but again, despairing way. Eventually, there is a full ruffling of drums but it’s distorted and busy, way too much so to feel organic or natural, so the seemingly endless verse of contrasting phrases from Dacus and Bridgers float across it, way further in the mix, like a cry for help in disaster - “my thoughts, all noise […] sometimes, I need to hear your voice”. It’s a great line to end on to, as the song dissipates out into the next on the tracklisting through a clattering software break instead of anything that sounds like it actually functions or resolves the song’s conflict. It’s a bit of a short, depressing tune, but it gets its point across pretty damn well. Wouldn’t mind more boygenius charting in the future, or just good alternative rock in general… just saying…
#52 - “WORTH IT” - Offset featuring Don Toliver
Produced by CHASETHEMONEY, Heavy Mellow, Cory Rose, OTTI, BEAM and Dave-O
The amount of producers on these big-name rap projects is getting out of hand. Does Offset really need six guys on the boards? To be fair, this was originally a song just by BEAM and CHASETHEMONEY that got deleted and repurposed into this track, which itself samples a Busta Rhymes classic “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See”, which peaked at #16 in 1997, as well as the reggae-pop hit “You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)” by Dawn Penn, which hit #3 in 1994. Yet somehow with all those samples, nothing of interests pops out. I guess this has a vague reggae rhythm to it thanks to the shaking percussion, and I mostly like Don Toliver on this kind of sound - he fits really well! Offset is here, on his #62 album that somehow charted two songs in the top 60 thanks to big-name features, and he just is entirely alien to this kind of song. There’s nothing that screams “chill reggae-pop” about Offset and it doesn’t seem like the mastering engineers cared much to rectify that. I don’t mind some of the melodic flows he ends up with, but they’re not anything I’d give a second listen. Maybe Offset’s next track will impress me?
#49 - “SAY MY GRACE” - Offset featuring Travis Scott
Produced by Vinylz, FNZ, Maneesh and Tom Levesque
Ever read a song’s title, artists and producers and know EXACTLY how it’s going to sound? This elevated, staccato luxurious trap beat was not a surprise to me at all, and I could even vaguely predict Set’s flow on this, which is sadly a bit more awkward than it should be when he’s asking God some genuine questions about why the people around him are dying, why there is systematic racism in the American justice system and… how his pinky ring cost him a Phantom. Travis Scott comes in saying he flooded the crib with cars and anything genuinely challenging or exciting about the song leaves with his verse, as the atmosphere mutes itself to a compressed synth for the entirety of his substanceless garbage that is sadly now not atypical of Travis. It had potential, but ended up honestly pretty bad.
#45 - “the grudge” - Olivia Rodrigo
Produced by Dan Nigro and Ryan Linvill
I was secretly hoping that no extra songs from GUTS would end up charting because I have very few good things to say about them but also very few good reasons for why I don’t like them. I can appreciate them as songs but they don’t resonate with me and particularly not this one, in her typical wordy fashion with those distant pianos and breathy delivery about a manipulative relationship where she just doesn’t have the strength left in her to forgive, which she really doesn’t need to. It is completely in her right to hold that grudge, and the framing of the song doesn’t entirely absolve her on that front, which is interesting, pretty disagreeable to me at least to me but I just wish the song gave me more actual melodic resonance outside of what acts practically as speaking over solid enough piano backing. It’s just lacking in some of the essentials for me, sorry.
#43 - “THIS YEAR (Blessings)” - Victor Thompson featuring Ehis ‘D’ Greatest
Produced by Samduke and Henrietta Thompson
This is a Christian Afrobeats song, I’m pretty sure, and not an awful one at that. Thompson is a Nigerian gosepl singer, and whilst the production is expectedly cheap and messy given a budget I assume just isn’t there, given that Christian music isn’t the mainstream market in Nigeria either, the delivery from these guys is so devoted it is pretty impressive, especially with Ehis’ shaky falsetto. That hook is insanely catchy also, and the slightly minimal, flexible Afrobeats groove is a solid foundation for two very slippery vocalists. I like the little screech that comes in every few measures, the choir vocals are beautiful as you’d expect - I love pretty much any use of choir in music - but why is this charting? Afrobeats is big, but these guys aren’t, and devoted Christian songs don’t often chart. There is a “French version” with Vacra and a sped-up version so I can assume some global TikTok virality… oh. Gunna is on the remix. There was a hidden Gunna song in here all this time. He’s not even bad here, though a bit strained, you can tell his passion is there even if the lyrics are generic. It’s an odd fit but not the worst, I suppose.
#31 - “DArkSide” - Bring Me the Horizon
Produced by Zakk Cervini, Oli Sykes and Daisuke Ehara
And straying as far away from possible as Christian Afrobeats songs featuring Gunna, we have the newest Bring Me the Horizon song, and man… this one’s about the “dark side” winning, going for a semi-introspective semi-populist touch that ends up just being gross in how it explores mental health. It goes for an anthemic pop-metal throwback to their mid-2010s days but without the specific narrative of POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR or the same level of sheer angst that I’m not sure they have in them anymore. It feels like an attempt by record label executives seeing the success of Bring Me the Horizon to make a song that could still be a hit whilst sounding like Bring Me the Horizon, with a touch of iffily-approached mental health lyrics that basically amount to “you wouldn’t be able to handle me when I’m crazy!”, furthered by the quirky vocal layering, obnoxious 2012 electronics and mostly substanceless, surprisingly rote songwriting. This is just nothing - there are no risks, there’s no interesting turns of phrase. It’s not even three minutes. It’s just depressing to see a once innovative band caught in this cycle of repeating themselves.
#28 - “Can’t Play Myself (A Tribute to Amy)” - Skepta featuring Amy Winehouse
Produced by Skepta
So in 2007, Amy Winehouse released “Tears Dry on Their Own” as a single, and in all honesty, I don’t like it. It is heavily reliant on its interpolation of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, a classic duet that it clearly tries to flip in how she and Salaam Remi built a pretty ambivalent song over one of the most recognisably upbeat, motivational anthems, about not feeling too bad about a relationship breaking up because it wasn’t made to last. Yet fittingly, it never really made me feel anything. It peaked at #37 on release then upon Winehouse’s death re-peaked at #27. Now as a tribute to the lost singer, UK rapper Skepta has remixed the track but not in a style you’d expect. It’s just a straight future house song and disappointingly not very interesting at all. Sure, it has a bit more fuzz and static than the usual house cut, but it doesn’t feel exactly on purpose, just moreso that Skepta can’t fully pull off atmospheric house, considering the factorial percussion and very flat-feeling pads and synths that coat Winehouse’s organic vocals. I may not be a fan of the original song but at least I’m able to admit her vocals will never really fit that perfectly on something that isn’t in that soulful vibe. It does pain me because I do want to enjoy this, it seems like a genuine tribute and re-imagining of a song he loved from her, but I don’t really like the execution here, it feels like it could have been done by anybody, which for Skepta, is kind of sad. Sorry.
#21 - “Rich Baby Daddy” - Drake featuring Sexyy Red and SZA
Produced by Gordo, Klahr, LIOHN, BNYX, TheLoudPack and UV Killin Em
This may be my favourite Drake song. To be fair, there is some healthy competition - and it is completely expected for me to like this kind of song, at least when you boil it down to its essentials - but the amount of Drake songs I genuinely love probably doubled with the release of For All the Dogs. “Rich Baby Daddy” appears to be the fan favourite as well, or at least the one going most viral on TikTok, and I couldn’t be happier. This is a straight-up Atlanta bass record based around a heavenly pad and angelic vocal sample from Jessica Domingo that elevates the song immediately into a state of transcendence, to the point where the pitter patter of the typical Miami bass percussion is more a sprinkled decoration than main rhythm despite the fact that it is still absolutely hypnotising. Of course, Sexyy Red of all people is here and her tonally void club-ready chant about shaking that ass for Drake is perfect for this kind of bop. Drake contrasts her staccato constant with a feeble warble that flexes, sure, but drenching himself with the same paranoia present throughout the album, with the lyrics about a girl dragging love out of him seeming reminiscent of those questions asked by the vocal sample: “I could be enough, is it all?”. SZA kills it as always, going for a fast-paced, sometimes incoherent sliding delivery, and I love how the vocal sample re-appears as prominent in the mix during her verse, it’s a great mix of vocal layers that compliment each other, especially when SZA is desperate to turn this one-night stand into something further. Ms. Red has a pretty short verse but her leaving the track to run bare, just repeating “I’m lucky” as an ad-lib before the hook comes back in definitely doesn’t sound like an error, it sounds like the emptiness of the song - which it has down even to its minimal instrumentation - creeping in, of course before it becomes increasingly obvious with that abrupt beat switch to a downtempo track of Drake crooning. Now, I’ve heard this song with this part excluded, I read a lot about how it ruined the song or at least the momentum, and I completely agree, but Drake’s best weapon in his arsenal is to make the audience hear conversations they never wanted to even know of. So of course after his incredibly accessible dance banger about masking the fragility of a relationship with the fun you’re having, he gets in his feelings about how much he did for this girl yet how distant and inexperienced she still is. Is it gross? Yes, of course it is, especially over those eerie looming synths. But Drake also latches onto some killer melodies and awful lines that make me recoil into my skin a little bit. Because he’s Drake, that’s what he does, and he’s doing it best here. That strained “You know I’m the one” is a great thing to leave in the air, because it sounds far from sincere. This is an excellent song, I’m glad it’s probably going to be a hit, and if this is the last song I talk about from that Drake album, just know I still think it’s his best and I know my opinion is garbage. WIth that said, how out of all of the songs on there the Yeat one still in the top 10? I would never have predicted that.
#17 - “One of Your Girls” - Troye Sivan
Produced by OZGO
As you can probably expect, so, say it with me now: No, I did not listen to the Troye Sivan album. Who do you think I am? Someone who likes pop music? You would be correct in that assumption and I was tempted to check it out when “Rush” was the only single but “Got Me Started” tempered me very much so. And wow, isn’t this a terrible inclusion to the list of singles? First of all, he sounds like Harry Styles over this murmuring synthpop instrumental, and secondly, he implies support for copyright law, which is nothing we here at the deadcactuswalking establishment can support. I would respect the rejection of the song’s sound to add five unnecessarily blaring synths before the acoustics come in the pre-chorus, if they didn’t sound like a scary logo compilation from 2011, and then a different synth tone comes in the outro - it is clearly a purposeful attempt to sound ugly, and for such a comforting and warm song lyrically, it puts me off from even wanting to come back to it, apart from it being generally dull. A few weird moments does not make an experimental song… or even an interesting one.
#16 - “ten” - Fred again.. and Jozzy
Produced by Fred again.. and Tony Friend
Interestingly, I can’t find the origin of this song’s samples, maybe it’s an unreleased set of tracks from sessions with Jozzy and Jim Legxacy, or just from sample packs, or stuff genuinely too obscure no one has found yet, but it definitely doesn’t sound like it was made for the song. In fact, “ten” has that same blue, jumbled sound as “adore u” but the lack of frame of reference regarding the lyrics may actually help because as a result I can fully submerge in this as what it is, which is practically an instrumental. The song immediately captures the club-ready set with that “back it up and dump it” refrain yet seems to pull you away or at least follow you on the road with its cold, limping synths, punctuated by a lo-fi chipping of drums, wherein Jozzy’s vocals act as another instrument at Fred’s disposal, manipulated not to make sense but to fit with the song and reach the exact melodic impact he wants, which is a great decision considering this song is about missing home. Lyrics that felt solid and developed, especially on the heavily-filtered, subtle and minimal atmospheric house beat would be almost a distraction. They simply want you to carry on with this one, as any homesick person with responsibilities may want to do also: just stick with it despite feeling completely out of it, and as someone who has recently moved home and is feeling particularly fatigued, it hits pretty hard. I do usually snark at the whole slow-down outro thing, but it works pretty well here considering it’s that moment of feeling absolutely lethargic and unsure of yourself before it picks up once again, actually speeding back up to pace for the true outro, with even more twinkling synth patterns and a whirlpool of distortion that eventually completely devours the song… yet it still goes on, like life always does. I don’t know if the song was made to be about stretching yourself unnecessarily just in order to get through life, but it sure feels like it and it hits home as a result. This is fantastic, and I hope it has a run like “adore u” did.
Conclusion
I mean, obviously, whoever the hell featuring who gives a damn gets Worst of the Week for “How You Like It”, but it’s sad to say that “DArkSide” by Bring Me the Horizon wasn’t far behind with the Dishonourable Mention. As for the best, it was kind of difficult but it is very difficult to reach Drake’s best so he gets Best of the Week for “Rich Baby Daddy” featuring Sexyy Red and SZA, with a tied Honourable Mention between boygenius’ “Black Hole” and “ten” by Fred again.. and Jozzy, both pretty incredible songs. As for what to expect upon the horizon, I don’t know and this episode was too long for me to care. Thank you for reading, see you next week!

This is not at all exhaustive! A chunk of these came from this playlist. So much of my music tastes of the last year came from there. Whoever made it, bless you. Also I know the genres are kind of all over the place, lol. I tried not to make it too angsty, and I have songs like F2F by SZA that I think are applicable to very specific situations (late s3). Moon Song by Phoebe would work for s2 as well. Stuff like that. Basically every Phoebe song.

jed's main biographical-ish playlist:
listen to the full playlisit here: (spotif.y)
Tumblr media
"Tell That Mick He Just Made My List Of Things To Do Today" by Fall Out Boy; Jed has always been a fighty kinda guy. This song speaks to the young kid in him that never grew up and never truly stopped wanting to fight at the drop of a hat. He's the guy who holds a grudge, too, so Let's play this game/called when you catch fire/I wouldn't p!ss to put you out.
"Father of Mine" by Everclear; Daddy gave me a name/and then he walked away. Since his biological father dipped and then the step father was shit, it fits.
"WILD" by Troye Sivan; he first met Rick in school and the pair, while complete opposites, hit it off, while neither of them would admit to feeling anything other than friendship for years, it was the start of something that would haunt his life.
"Bob Dylan" by Fall Out Boy; One of the recurring lines that one would find in Jed's poetry is a line from this song: Sometimes the only way out is through.
"Lean" by The National; this song speaks to the part of Jed that is tired, and how he knows what everyone needs and like the song, it's kind of exhausting... but love is a relief.
"1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins; nostalgia, 1979 is the year he was born, it reminds him of the days when he didn't care so much. It was carefree, but he was missing so many things. He knows that now and he wouldn't want to go back, but sometimes it's nice to just sit in the nostalgic feelings the song brings back to him.
"Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard; thinking again about Rick, the summers they spent together where they were inseperable, and prior to him stepping into the role of man of the house, Rick was his voice of reason and the ONLY reason why he never got into more trouble than he did.
"Head Like A Hole" by Nine Inch Nails; just before Jed took on major responsibilities, he was defiant, especially when it came to orders from his step dad. I'd rather die than give you control.
"Ringfinger" by Nine Inch Nails; Jed definitely sees himself as a martyr for what he did for his family. Not in a pompous way, but in that he felt like he let go of everything he wanted to be to be what his family needed. A sacrifice.
"Full Moon" by The Black Ghosts; this encompasses his desire for freedom that he thought he so desperately wanted when he left home finally when the youngest brother was old enough to leave the house. He spent time wandering, living a nomadic life and seeing the United States. He couch surfed and hitchhiked all over and finally, ended up here at Cape May.
"The Only Time" by Nine Inch Nails; when he began traveling, he let go of a lot of inhibitions and simply did as he pleased.
"Boys of Summer" by The Ataris; what he didn't expect, though, was to be missing Rick so badly. When he traveled, he left Rick behind, back in Texas.
"Electric Touch" by Taylor Swift ft. Fall Out Boy; nostalgic for Rick again, realizing that he was The One with the Electric Touch, Jed traveled back home to Texas and found Rick in a relationship with a woman, expecting a child.
"Tomorrow Never Came" by Lana Del Rey ft. Sean Ono Lennon; ultimatum given to Rick, they agreed to meet up and go to Cape May until they could figure everything out tomorrow, but... tomorrow never came. Rick never showed up and never returned his calls or texts.
"Heat Waves" by Glass Animals; sometimes he gets too nostalgic okay.
"Far Too Young To Die" by Panic! At The Disco; I want to complicate you/Don't let me do this to myself/I'm chasing rollercoasters. The Aesthetic TM.
"Take It As It Comes" by The Doors; and finally, how Jed has learned to live his life, rolling with the punches instead of always throwing them. Take it easy baby/Take it as it comes.

Remixtape
This tape is celebrating some of my all time favourite remixes! I think remixes are overlooked by many people. A good remix re-invents a new song and gives it a new life, once you've gotten sick of the original version from overplaying it too much (something I am guilty of doing a lot).

MusicOr... Honey and One Of Your Girls by Troye Sivan
Tumblr media
Favorite Lyrics (Honey): Give me the courage to say all the shit I mean ⬩ Give me a song to rock your body, a lucid dream ⬩ I don't know how I'm gonna tell you what you really mean ⬩ Give me that honey, honey, love you've got the recipe ⬩⬩ You know I see love in every space ⬩ I see sex in every city, every town ⬩ I wonder what us two could make;
Favorite Lyrics (One Of Your Girls): Everybody loves you, baby ⬩ You should trademark your face ⬩⬩ Give me a call if you ever get desperate ⬩ I'll be like one of your girls;
Other Favorite Songs: Rush, What's The Time Where You Are?, Got Me Started, Silly;
Later in December last year, I decided that I wanted to give a chance to some records, Troye's Something To Give Each Other included. However, even though I tried, only Rush had sparked my attention (with its fervidly wild music video that encapsulates the intensity of being queer), and when I played the album again, nothing stood out. Troye is a kind of a mystery to me. I love a few songs of his, but there's something on his timbre that doesn't fit my ears. So, my only choice was to let it set aside for a diferent moment.
Fast forward to me watching Anyone But You — a good movie, but not worthy a whole post on my Tumblr, as of now at least (the movie had such insane moments, an attempt, I reckon, to try to be different from all the rom-cons out there, that I'm still trying to understand if I liked it) — and Got Me Started started playing on the boat scene and somehow it got stuck on me. Then I decided to play the album and was feeling like it was interesting. Then Honey came on and, well, you know how it is.
The song had me right from the beginning with the "give me the courage to say all the shit I mean" line, because that's just what I feel all the time. Being me is a non-stop work of finding the courage to be who I am and say what I feel and want to. Sometimes, it's easy so I don't even notice I'm complimenting a tattoo on a random guy at the gym. Other times, I'm too in my head to even function, so I block everything and let my anxiety speak louder than anyone else in the room.
Another line comes on, "you know I see love in every space" and, again, that's just too me. A few seconds in and I was completely sold. Maybe it's more poetic in Troye's life, but in mine seeing love in every space is just too tragic, so it's something I'm trying to learn not to do (not all the time at least). When the chorus comes in again, the beat just makes me want to get up and dance my feelings out. I actually did that and it was incredible.
For me, this song stands on the opposite spectrum of One Of Your Girls, which feels so accurate in portraying a very usual (and hopeless) feeling in the LGBTQIA+ world. It's a song that has this seductive alluring atmosphere that can easily fool an unadvised soul, with its haunting distoreted chorus, and sensual music video, but the meaning behind it's honestly a lot sad and tragic, and it's a shame that it's a concept that's been buried deep down in every gay kid's mind — mine included — that comes back unconsciously in every daily decision we made. I mean, in the video we have a female model version of Troye seducing a straight men, Ross Lynch, as a clear example that we are always hoping to get the tough stud guy.
Honey, on the other hand, comes to the other side of the rainbow as a positive reminder that, apart from the sentimental problems we all grew up with and that we always have to face just for being who we are, there's a treasure chest full of hope at the end of every rough journey. And if a song shows me hope, in such a sweet name and form, then I embrace it. Hope is never enough, after all, and I can use some right now.

Ahhh I totally missed the notif for your last response 😭
But yeah the new Mitski album was really beautiful. My initial favorites are Bug Like an Angel, Buffalo Replaced, and The Deal. I didn't listen to singles first so I was just pleasantly shocked when she opened the entire album with "There's a bug like an angel stuck to the bottom of my glass with a little bit left". What a beautiful, huge, interesting line to start off! What Mitski songs (new album or other) are your favorites?
Ohh vault is so hard for me. I've found that I can't predict what TS songs I'll like most based on the titles at all haha. My favorite of the new vault titles is Suburban Legends tho. And 1989 is one of my favorite TS albums so I'm optimistic I'll enjoy them all a lot. How about you?
Totally agree - Bewitched is pretty much a no skip here too! And you're so right about the interlude! I absolutely love callbacks + repeating sounds and themes in an album. I think in general her style and beautiful vocals make it easy to listen to all her songs even the ones I don't connect with as much. Have you listened to the live album she did with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra?
My favourite songs off Mitski's new album are Star and My Love Mine All Mine! I have listened to the singles but it's a whole new experience to listen to the new album in full 💖 From Mitski's previous albums, I also enjoy Love Me More, I Guess, and Two Slow Dancers!
It's hard to pick a single favourite Mitski song lyric, but at the moment I really resonate with "That love is like a star It's gone, we just see it shinin' 'Cause it's traveled very far"!
1989 TV is also one of my favourite albums so I also feel you!! I think for me I'd also go for Suburban Legends as the vault track that intrigues me the most! (for some reason the song title reminds me of Troye Sivan's song Suburbia) I personally associate 1989 with suburban aesthetics, so I think Suburban Legends is the closest we'd get of a title track for the album!
ooh I haven't listened to the entirety of Laufey's live album with Iceland Symphony Orchestra yet, but from what I've heard I really enjoyed the more cinematic take of her songs! If the studio versions are acoustic, the live recording feels like something that would perfectly fit with a classic movie soundtrack!
And you're absolutely right about Laufey's style - while I don't always personally relate to all of the lyrics (particularly about romance) I nevertheless found her music very listenable as a whole - I think the her songwriting, production choices, and overall album cohesiveness outweighs the lyrical details in this case!
P.S. Have you heard that Maisie Peters just announced that she'll be releasing the deluxe version of The Good Witch? Which bonus tracks are you looking forward to the most?
