La Brea thoughts, 2x01-05

Twenty months after I binged season 1 -- so long ago that I had to watch the entire "previously on" recap just to remember half of what happened, because my general impression of this show is that visually it's great and the ideas are cool, but its cast is lackluster and its dialogue often cringe, so it doesn't stay with me -- after five episodes in a week I have had basically four pressing thoughts:

(you get zero context for this because I don't think I have written about this show before even to myself, let alone Tumblr. oops.)

1. I keep forgetting the 1988 story exists so every time we switch over, I feel like I've been smacked in the face by how beautiful and vibrant Riley is (with really great hair). Veronica St. Clair is one of the few true standouts in this cast.

2. Speaking of, Scowling Head of the Mine/Guard Dude is the first character EVER to make me sit straight up and go "hell-o" on sight. Extremely excellent Dark and Brooding face, and also great hair.

3. With the simple addition of slightly growing out his already good hair, I have gone from being meh about Gavin (which always frustrated me because objectively? good looking man. i just felt no screen presence), to being full steam ahead OTP: MARRIED PARENTS; I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL; EVE FORGIVE HIM AND STOP BREAKING IZZY'S HEART ABOUT HER BROKEN HOME OR SO HELP ME... Just full swoon up in this joint now. Man loves his wife, has gone to extreme lengths to reunite, is willing to forgive a whole lot without judgment if she'll do the same; end of story!

3.5. This is a carry-over from me hating Levi's face since it first appeared as THE WORST DUDE in Off the Map. In 2011. This man still has not earned out his badwill from that character, even as the most upstanding military hero character one could imagine. No hope for him!

4. BUT. Here is the thing -- I actually think this is the most interesting love triangle/adultery story I have ever seen on television, because I get it. I understand how it is actually a difficult choice for Eve, because for all my shipping I don't actually know who is the better choice for her right now. I understand how and why the cheating happened and I don't even judge it, which I have literally never felt in the history of ever, ESPECIALLY when a cheater has kids. I understand how you could love both of these men at the same time, and why both of them have valid claims to her heart.

All of this is beautifully complicated by Gavin and Levi being close friends, and my FAVORITE part of it all is Izzy standing in for me and being my sounding board and saying everything I would say and feel in this situation regardless of my age.

I am going to need it to resolve with Levi dying, because this is fully a "I am not sorry you lost them but I'm sorry you're hurt" type of comfort situation in the making, but I think I could actually handle up to an entire season of UST and/or Eve officially choosing wrong for a while, if i could retain some hope.

I will abso-LUTELY riot in an Eve/Levi endgame situation, though. You know how I am about marriage.

Lucas's interactions with Veronica lately: *Dean Pelton voice* what is this? what is this creepy business?

(no seriously why does this feel like UST even though she definitely looks like a teenage child and he is definitely a grown-ass adult. i have never been so viscerally reviled by age difference in my life)

Para has been one of my favorites almost since her introduction and that love has only gotten stronger

MOAR CGI CREATURES. I loved the rhinos, in particular, so g.d. much.

One more thought about the Harrises: despite Gavin and Izzy having spent a whole season sequestered together already, this is really the first time I have gone feral about the father/daughter bond -- I assume this is related to the former becoming Gavin With The Good Hair -- so when the love triangle breaks my heart too much, at least I have this. Honestly, it's really nice seeing her back with her mom too, and any scenes that involve the parents working together to protect/comfort her? Special favorites.

(the son they're all risking life and limb to reunite with? still relegated to Season 1 Gavin status; change my mind)

So I’ve been on this website since 2012 and I wanted to see how much I have changed. So I decided to find an old ask meme thing of mine from 5 years ago and comment on the old stuff and updated it to what I think now. Fic Writers Week 2017: Day 1

Prompt: Words of Validation

First off, let me state what will be obvious to most fellow writers--I love literally each and every comment I get, knowing that someone was moved or excited enough about what I wrote to put that effort in.  Seeing that comment notification always makes my day brighter, whether it’s on my most popular fics or one with only a handful of hits.  If you are someone who’s ever commented on a fic of mine, know that I read it and loved it and appreciated it so, so much!

That said, there are definitely a few comments that go that extra mile, and become the ones that inspire you, comfort you, and that you reread so often you basically memorize them.  I’ve copied a few here below the Read More.

-There are few better moments in the fanfic writing life than when you participate in a fandom gift exchange, and your recipient leaves you a comment with their reaction.  From my Akisae fic Hazard Label:

RIP Mairin (1997-2016) Cause of Death: this fucking fic

- I’ve been absolutely blown away by the positive reception to my first Daisuga fic, Add New Contact over the past couple years.  Here are just a couple of the many fantastic comments it’s gotten:

I have been grinning at my phone for the past ten minutes because this is so CUTE omg! Possibly the cutest thing I've read all year. Daichi is such a lovesick NERD and I love how he keeps trying to rationalize what he's doing. (In his defense though, I would break my phone to see Suga too.) And Suga sneaking into Daichi's phone may have made me laugh. I would say I want more of this, but it ended so perfectly! Thanks for sharing!

I reread this fic for the third time and honestly idk why but this time it makes me cry (r u even serious) it has been a while since i read haikyuu and them fics or doujin (since the Yuri on ice fever) and i've kind of forgotten how much i love these two. Think i cried just because now i remembered how cute those two are and GAHHHH I LOVE YOUR WRITING STYLE SO SO SO MUCH i can't even express how much i love this fic in words???? Like it wouldn't ever be enough to say how much i adore this fic gdi, yes daisuga has been my fav otp since who knows when, but this fic makes me fell A LOT MORE for daisuga than i have ever been. They're so in characters and all of the dialogues and inner thoughts are so sweet and just, reALLY REALLY THEM. your characterization is perfect and honestly if i should ask for more, then i really want more daisuga from you, 'cause really, your writing style. Geez. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. You make me ship them even more and ghhhhhhh this is surely one of my all time favorite fics in the universe. And no i'm not exaggerating at all. Please never stop writing stuffs. Thank u for existing and for making this fic exists love u bless u

- Finally, comments that are given to my works that are more about character-study than shipping, or that I put a lot of personal feelings into, hold a special place for me.  I wrote Things We Forged in the Fire as a celebration of Morgiana, one of my favorite ladies, and reading that my characterization resonated with people really touched me:

This is absolutely perfect, you really capture the ferocity and gentleness of Mor, I'm a bit jealous of you. Also the alimor was divine, subtle and sweet, mutual respect is such a key component of their relationship, yet it's left out a lot.

I love this story! I really don't leave comments in archive of our own because of the need to leave an email address but, this story just needed to be commented on how fantastic it is. I have just been reading Magi and I also believe that Morgiana is one of the most bad-ass character ever! And, you are also correct that there are not many stories that are dedicated to Mor (or to Mor and Alibaba as a pair) which is quite sad.

I like the way that you described Mor and Alibaba's relationship. It was not forced and I really appreciate that because even if AliMor (is this correct?) is my "ship", sometimes some stories just fail to capture the mutual respect that Alibaba and Morgiana have for each other. Also, grammatically, I did not find any mistakes (though I'm not an expert in that particular area) and your use of words was simple and understandable yet it also captures what you want to convey to your readers.

I really hope that you would be making more stories about Morgiana (she's such an under-appreciated character!) or about her and Alibaba (since this is my ship after all. Hahaha). Are you considering making a multi-chaptered story for them? (*blinks at you with puppy eyes). I would definitely read them. More power to you and may you write more stories for Magi! And, happy new year! :)

1. how did you get into astro

originally, i was only really into super junior and cnblue. but super junior went on this hiatus the moment i got into them in 2015 and cnblue is great, but i just felt like i was missing something. so i tried out a few new groups, trying to find someone i caught onto instantly, and somehow astro stole my heart literally the moment i saw the hide and seek mv. best decision of my life.

2. how long have you known about astro

i had seen stuff about them in late 2015, with their okay ready show, but i remember thinking, “they’re really cute but im not that into kpop lol.” fast-forward and i watched their hide and seek mv in the summer last year, and that’s when i started gobbling up everything i could about them until they released summer vibes!

3. do you have more than one bias

mj, fo sho. always mj. and, at this point, i hesitate to label jinjin a bias wrecker because he has become a heavy bias of mine, as well. it’s gotta be mj and jinjin. (did you guys expect anything else)

4. who is your bias wrecker

all of them. just all of them.

5. which member first caught your eye

there were two members, actually. the first was mj. mj and his smiley face and his soft hair and his dorky attitude. i loved him the moment i saw hide and seek. but then i also liked rocky a lot. i thought he had an adorable smile and he was really cool but also really cute!

myungjinnnnnn. all the way myungjin. and, tbh, im neutral to the rest of the ships! i like any of them that have some form of chemistry. binu is the great ship, and i do like it a lot (i add it into, like, everything), and socky is a cute innocent ship. but i also like rare ships - i find them really interesting. (myungjun / bin does not equal bj, dasha.)

binu ships themselves. tho i thought the main ship would be moonrock, so i was confused when i got into the fandom.

SO I THINK SANHA WITH BLACK HAIR??? i know everyone talks about eunwoo’s hair, but sanha’s had different colored hair in every single comeback. like, the only pics i’ve seen of him with black hair are his kiddie pictures. i mean, i guess jinjin, too, but i just really want to see sanha with his normal black hair.

i think the infamous bug one. i showed that one to my sister and i think that propelled her obsession. especially bc i used to be deathly afraid of big, flying bugs, but i’ve been designated the Killer of Roaches both at work and at home, and so now i can’t run away screaming. but while Seal on the Outside is calm and simply smacks giant bugs with brooms and shoes, Seal on the Inside loses her shit.

(fun fact - i attack giant roaches with ease, and then once it’s dead, i sit down and cry bc it’s scary.)

ooc;; Hmm okay so one would definitely be Freed/Laxus/Bixlow. I just… no. 100x no. I admit that I am not a fan of ot3s. I tolerate them though and there are some that look really cute, I just don’t really get feels or involved in them. What turns this one into a major NOTP of mine is a) I neither seem to be able to see Freed/Bixlow in a romantic way nor Laxus/Bixlow but can most of all be blamed on b) THE THINGS I’VE SEEN/READ OF IT. Like. THIS makes it to such a huge ass NOTP. Yea, once again the fandom’s fault. Look I’ve already have issues with a huge part of the Fr.axus fandom (and it’s my damn OTP) and its characterization/stereotypes/portrayal but with Fr.axlow it’s even worse. I just… I cringe.
