Larmau near the end of season 1

Laurance and Aphmau literally become each other’s confidants as season one comes to a close. The only people they can truly trust is each other. No wonder Garroth lets jealousy gets the better of him (I still don’t think he would betray them without Lillian influencing it magically). However, Aph and Laurance’s relationship grew in such a short amount of time. This shift really began after they visit Meteli and they hug. Suddenly, they’re keeping secret between each other and they’re the only people making each other laugh. They are both the people that they let loose with and the people that they go to when things get difficult. Honestly, if everything with Scaleswind and Zane hadn’t happened I feel like it would have led to their relationship developing into an actual romance.

Laurance literally begins staying at her home while all the chaos begins to unfold with Scaleswind. He was there to celebrate Malachi’s rebirth (Lucinda is also there too to be fair.) Laurance has become a vital part of Aphmau’s personal life that Garroth unknowingly withheld from himself. Garroth, of course, was always there for Aphmau and especially her children but he always shied away from letting her in and left a boundary between them. But, what’s interesting is at Malachi’s celebration dinner, Aphmau left a seat open for Garroth right between her and Laurance. I feel like this is a good metaphor for Aphmau, Laurance, and Garroth’s relationship. Garroth always has a seat at the table with them but, he’s never reached out and sat down. However, there’s always this space between Aphmau and Laurance; a boundary they can’t cross because they both love Garroth. Laurance and Aphmau can’t wholly give themselves to each other because Garroth has unknowingly taken possession of parts of them.

I can’t lie chat, sometime I go on tumblr and the Aphmau community discourse makes me sigh out loud

how often do you think garroth worried about vylad after he left for tu’la? did vylad leave something with garroth (maybe a little wooden carving) as a promise he would come back? did garroth spend countless nights turning that carving over in his hands to calm his anxiety, worrying if his brother had lost his head to the king yet? maybe even fearing vylad ended up on the nether somehow?

garroth cares for his baby brother, of course he’s gonna worry when their gone longer they told him (just a few weeks, vylad had told garroth). of course garroth is going to spend his nights thinking of every possible thing that could happen to vylad while he’s in tu’la (the worst one being that he lost them again). the only solace garroth has is the comfort that comes from the little wooden wolf that vylad carved for him. by the time garroth is finally able to see his brother again, the wolf carving is already so worn down from the nights he spent worrying.

This will probably sound dumb but as a trans person, there is something about calling KC 'Nana' that has never sat right with me. I know she is not canonically a trans woman, but she chose to change her name. She no longer felt like she was 'Nana', that that person was not her. Is the name she chose much better? No not at all.

Yet still there is something that irks me in a very deep way. I get I'm probably being too online, but in case you were wondering why I only call her KC in my posts, that's why.

I did give her a completely different name in my rewrite, but that's neither here nor there.

Headcanon that Laurance knows multiple languages:

Like obviously he’s fluent in Ru’Aunian (english), but I think he’d also be semi fluent in french and spanish (or whatever the in universe equivalent is). He comes from a pirate town, and there are a lot of “french” and “spainish” pirates and sailors that come to port so he picked up some things. I think Joh was probably rather fluent so he likely learned from him.

I think he’d know some conversational Galish (the main language of Gal’Ruk) and Southern Tulian. I imagine Galish is similar to Norwegian and Southern Tulian is similar to Japanese.

Travis definitely taught him all the Galish he knows and Nana, being from Southern Tu’La taught him not only a bit of Southern Tulian but also some common Meif’wa hand signs, as many of them (including her) sometimes prefer to speak nonverbally.

He also knows quite a bit of Old Ru’Aunian, as it’s what they mostly speak in the Nether. He doesn’t like speaking or reading it, as it brings up a lot of bad memories. But it can come in handy when needing a private conversation with Aphmau, when reading old texts, and when they meet Malachi. Malachi really only speaks the old language when they first meet him, so Aph and Laur are the only ones whom he can really speak to, partly why he’s so attached to them and views them as his parents.

Laury really likes learning new languages, and he always has. Like when he met Cadenza.

Cadenza spoke Ru’Aunian (obviously, she’s from Ru’Aun), but she also spoke a regional dialect from her old village Zerimar. This dialect sounds a bit like a cross between english and russian. To most, it’s just jibberish, but if you take the time to break it down it makes much more sense. As kids (and adults) Laurance and Cadenza would speak Zerimarian when they didn’t want anyone to know what they were saying. Much to Hayden and Joh’s disapproval, as Cadenza refused to teach them.

Not only that, but the only other Zeriamrian in Meteli, Kenmur, wouldn’t teach them either. Much too afraid of what Cadenza would do to him if he did.

I also think he’d know a little greek (again whatever the in universe equivalent is). I headcanon him as greek, so I think his parents spoke it. He was young when they died and he’s spoken Ru’Aunian most of his life, but I think as he grows he decides to relearn some to kind of regain a bit of what he’s lost.

I have nothing else to write about so i'm gonna talk about my old Shadow knight headcanon post and expand on it..

The nether is a lot more organized than most (if not all) think. There are rules and regulations to make sure everything is working for the cause. No people so dedicated to a cause will have loose regulations. That is not feasible.

There are different ranks of shadow knights. We see only two types of positions: Head of the army, and army soldier (technically, also commanders but it was only said Zenix was one? So idk how accurate that is). However, I believe there should be more roles within the army. Those layers include: Leader > Sergeant > Commander > soldier/knight.

However, within those ranks there are different types of groups. There are Witches/Wizards, people who were gifted with strong powers are in a group, archers, and even a few select assassins. However, the main parts of the army were hand-to-hand fighters. There are a bunch of different weapon types. There are swords, great-swords, battle axes, spears, axes, and the more talented ones have daggers.

Here are some of the ranks i think the current known Shadow Knights would have(except Zane and Laurence)

Gene: Sergeant

Sasha: Commander

Zenix: Commander (before he went rogue)

Vylad: He was going to be a commander but rejected before he went off and went rogue as well.

Now, I am going to get into the culture of the nether and how others work around each other.

Sometimes, a person when a person dies in the nether or in the real world, they do not become shadow knight. People in the nether do not know how this happens. Sometimes it's not innocent people while the other half are innocent people. If they are weak (cannot become a good soldier) they are killed off. Stronger people become a shadow knight soldier. If they were sacrificed in the name of Shad, then those people are treated just a little better. The strongest ones have a more likely chance to lead a group of soldiers.

Now, onto the castle itself. There is a main throne room, dungeons, training grounds, and ana altar room with an alter to worship Shad/Shadow Lord. The insignia is everywhere and guards are everywhere on the premises. You cannot get away with something under the watchful eye of the nether.

litreally my favorite juiciest angst in mcd is that garroth, in like episode 80-something of season 2, had witnessed everything from season 1 finale only a MINUTE AGO. his betrayal was still fresh, witnessing his second apprentice brian betray phoenix drop was still fresh, everything painful and regretful were things aphmau's group long forgotten about by the time they reunited

laurance, aphmau, and katelyn have grown so much that garroth probably only felt like a stranger more than ever, especially with the added guilt over aaron's sacrifice

Hey guyyyys!! I'm baaack with a fresh batch of Laurance angst brought to you by "I really like this random design detail and will try my damnedest to make it make sense." The design detail in question is heterochromia!

Today's programming involves discussion of torture and probably some body horror

So, I'm a big believer in heterochromatic Laurance. It's just real to me. Because honestly both of his very distinct looks are serving cunt in very distinct Laurance Zvahl ways. I have a preference for his original appearance because I have a few bones to pick with Jessica's design decisions, but the pale blue and even blind eyes fit Laurance really well.

In a separate iteration of Laurance I made him lose one of his eyes before the rebirth process, so his heterochromia was unrelated to the whole pseudo-zombie thing. But in MCD... Well... Everything comes back to Shadow Knights.

Little Larry has beautiful emerald green eyes that then get utterly destroyed by the cruelness of the hell he willingly threw himself into to save those he loves. And uhhh, Laurance in canon says he was tortured down there. So let's get into that, shall we? Now, a thing about torture methods is that there's a lot of them, they're really easy to come up with if you have even a slightly sadistic mindset, and they are often focused. Most people who frequently engage in torture chose one field of the body to focus on.

Now let's look at Gene. Obviously for his magical and psychological torture, his focus is on the mind. But what about his physical methods? Obviously Gene gets his kicks out of people in pain, yet I think his real focus is when it gets personal. When someone isn't just in pain, but they are crying, shaking, writhing in agony while staring up at him cursing his bloodline. The eyes are the window into the mind and they say so much that the mouth can't when words fail or are restricted.

Gene focuses on eyes. He remembers them. They haunt him. When he's learning how to break people, he learns how to use their very sense of sight against them. It's already what he knows how to do with his magic and extreme gaslighting tactics. If he has a focus, if he has a piece of information he needs, and he has a target, then he'll focus on the eyes. If he, for example, thinks that Laurance has more information on either realm barriers or Aphmau, who is quickly becoming a point of interest for the Shadow King, then he'll have a reason.

But he can't possibly permanently ruin both of Laurance's eyes. He still needs another for at least semi-proper comprehension of how fucked he is. Gene doesn't need more than one eye. And I like to characterize Gene as a bit of a mad scientist, testing out his magic and Shadow Knight powers in extreme and unhinged ways.

Who knows what he did to Laurance's eye, what happened when he destroyed it and regenerative powers brought it back over and over. What effects traversing between realms had on whatever the fuck Gene did to make it so bad it didn't even resemble his original eye color.

Irene's blessing is able to mitigate the damage on his other eye, the one that was only blinded by realm travel, and bring it almost back to its original state. A pale sage color that has partial but still restricted vision. Laurance is grateful for what little eyesight he has. His other eye, the one Gene targeted... It doesn't come back. After the realm barrier blinded it, there was no undoing the damage anymore. It remains a cloudy pale blue, scars running across the skin around it and through his retinas.

I want to make it clear that Laurance isn't ashamed of this. He doesn't try to hide his eye, but he is cagey to answer questions about it. Most people are smart enough not to question, and he'll open up to the people he cares about (ie Garroth and Aphmau) when he's ready. I have a whole arc related to his blindness that's a whole side blog post I'm working on, but Laurance doesn't forsake the sight he has and he also doesn't lament what he's lost.

"Cad[endza] and Aphmau keep saying they want to bring my sight back. [I] know they mean well but... I can't tell them what happened. I don't think either one of them could take it. Garroth might be able to, but I don't think either of us trust each other enough for that conversation yet. I don't need my eyesight back, and I don't need anyone to fix my left eye. If they knew what that monster did, they would be grateful I have an eye to be blinded.

He doesn't encourage anyone to try and bring it back, and he might even get upset if they're too insistent about it. He's not exactly eager for another magic user to get their hands too close to an already severely damaged eye. He might not say it out loud to someone, but... [blinks my gay little eyes] There's a page in his journal that reads--
