Sorry Punz, but the Hunters won

hi!! so after witnessing the debate about who won the most recent manhunt, I decided to go back and watch every single episode of Minecraft manhunt to determine who the winner should be, based on previous rules and gameplay. have at it, ig

I want to preface this by saying that this is genuinely the first analysis I’ve ever written so if it’s terrible lmao oh well what u gonna do about it

The latest episode of manhunt initiated a multi-platform debate as to whether the hunter win can be deemed valid on the basis of an in-game glitch. Apparently, the majority of fans on both Twitch and Twitter (including Punz lmao) viewed this as an invalid win and argue in favour of Dream. They are so incredibly wrong.

To clarify, I’m defining glitch here as non-intended gameplay, purposefully coded mechanics such as bed explosions or entity cramming are invalid in this argument because they are branded as ‘intentional’ game designs.

I want to begin by addressing the set rules of manhunt- in the first ever episode (Minecraft Speedrunner VS Hunter FIRST EVER), the rules were pretty vague, summarised as:

“I’m going to try and beat Minecraft before my friend kills me once. If I die, the video is over, and I lose.”

But as the series grew and became to involve more people on the opposition, the rules developed to specify that that the Speedrunner must earn the ‘Free the End’ achievement before his death. (3 Hunters REMATCH, 4 Hunters). From this it’s clear that this can be deemed a valid Hunters win as Dream did not earn the achievement, supported by the fact that there was no visible evidence of the Dragon’s death, you know, the purple lights, the sounds, the xp drop etc. In short, from my research, there is no supporting evidence that the dragon was dead.

This brings us to the infamous dragon respawn ritual glitch. I went to the End and did a few test runs and I can confirm that the ritual, as it played out in the video, was not an intentional play. The ritual should only have been successful if the dragon had died. There was an intended strategy to the placement of the end crystals as stated by Sam in the extra scenes, yet the actual events can be chalked up to a server glitch. This is the point where the rebuttal of “but the respawn worked so the dragon must be dead” comes into play, and for those of you who believe that I’d like to invite you to reread the previous paragraph.

So, to summarise thus far- no dead dragon. But respawn ritual worked. It’s a glitch.

Let’s talk about the use of glitch exploitation in Manhunt.

I spent hours combing through every episode of manhunt looking out for times that anyone had used a glitch to their advantage, and two moments stuck out the most- the Nether Roof glitch, and scaffolding ghost blocks.

Around 30 minutes into the Speedrunner VS 4 Hunters REMATCH video, Dream exploits a well-known glitch that allows the player to bypass bedrock and access the roof of the Nether, before luring the hunters there in order to leave them stranded ultimately forcing them to resort to killing each other to escape. Similarly, in Minecraft Speedrunner VS 4 hunters GRAND FINALE, Dream strategically places scaffolding to exploit a glitch allowing him to speed bridge using ghost blocks. It’d be unfair to be selective about the use of glitches in manhunt, allowing dream to freely exploit them and condemning the Hunters for using a similar mechanic to their advantage.

It is worth noting that there are several differences between the glitches exploited by dream and the glitch that occurred during the 5 Hunters episode- notably, the clarification that the Dream purposefully exploited glitches, whereas the respawning of the Dragon was an accidental event caused by a glitch in the server itself, instead of as an intended play.

To summarise, because this was a glitch in the server rather than one initiated by a player, the argument states this shouldn’t count. To that, I’d argue that while the glitch caused the play to unfold differently from the plan, it was still a legitimate play. It was established by Sam that the ritual in only supposed to work post dragon death. The Hunters also expressed audible confusion as to what had happened to the Dragon. All players were distracted, and George, identifying this as a moment of weakness for Dream, used that to his advantage and killed him. Every player was affected by the glitched respawn of the ender dragon- had George not taken advantage of everyone’s distraction, the game would have continued with a Dragon at full health. It all came down to George’s knowledge of Dream’s behaviours.

‘it’s too OP a play it shouldn’t be counted’ ya well I hate to break it to you but there are a number of OP plays across various manhunts that were banned after their use, and they were all counted as valid during the run that they were used, including:

- The Nether Roof glitch, gives too much power to one side and was banned after

- Nether Travel in general, gives an unfair advantage against the hunters and was banned in the same ep

- Instant Damage Potions, self-explanatory really

- And now the respawning dragon, which does give an unfair advantage to the hunters

TL; DR,, sorry punz, but I’d argue that the Hunters win is valid. Condemning the use of a glitch to their advantage would display active bias towards the speedrunner who had frequently used unintended gameplay to further his progress. There was no evidence of the Dragon dying (through in-game visuals or by achievement), and the glitch would still have counted as a valid yet confusing play had Dream not died that very moment. The Hunters won, you’re all just simps.

i GOTCHU FAM

the way that i got into minecraft youtubers as a whole and the dream team (sapnap, georgenotfound, and dream) was through the minecraft manhunt series. most people start here, it helps you get a feel for their personas/personalities.

i recommend watching minecraft speedrunner vs 3 hunters, minecraft speedrunner vs 3 hunters rematch, minecraft speedrunner vs 3 hunters finale, minecraft speedrunner vs 3 hunters finale rematch, minecraft speedrunner vs 3 hunters grand finale, and minecraft speedrunner vs 4 hunters. these are all on dreams channel, and they’re in a playlist titled “minecraft manhunt” which has 18 videos, but those are the primary ones that most people watch. you can choose which ones to go for or watch even more, curate ur own experience!

once you get a hold on their personalities/voices/mc skins, it’s easier to branch out and start watching twitch videos. there’s a Lot of twitch content, most of which can be found on Dream Team Streams

the next Level (basically) is the dreamteam SMP. the beginning you can find on dreamteam streams. I don’t know where you can find old streams of other members of the dream smp, like wilbur/tommy/eret/etc. otherwise there should be like summary videos on the various l’manburg members’ youtube channels.

watching some of the dreamteam’s old streams can be fun as well but for other people here’s a mini rundown? i’m not as Intense as some people but here’s who i know

badboyhalo -- part of the “muffinteers” which is the dream team + bad, CEO of “language!”, very sweet, part of the manhunts, not a part of dream smp lore but is a part of the smp (iirc)

tommyinnit -- part of l’manburg on the dream smp, 16 years old, loud, considered one of the funnier ones

tubbo_ -- tommy’s best friend, also like 16, wholesome, has “tubbo moments”, also literally chaos incarnate, convinces people to eat pufferfish all the time??

wilbursoot -- president of l’manburg, also a part of sleepy bois inc (with technoblade and Ph1LzA), close friends (?) with nihachu

nihachu -- close friends (?) with wilbur, on the dream smp not a big part of politics, very sweet and lovely has a bakery in game

fundy -- created different minecraft difficulties, part of the dream smp and l’manburg (currently questioning), server furry/ has a fox skin, dutch king

the_eret -- ceo of deep voice, formerly part of l’manburg, has Long streams, idk i dont watch a ton of him but he has cool vibes

manhunt spoils aheadddddd

"if they kill me ONE TIME, i lose. if I beat the ender dragon, I win” so....which was it? Personally I’m on the “he lost” side, but let’s talk about it. I’m going to go through all the manhunts (including assassin, juggernaut, all those) and write down the intros, just to see if that intro changes and really shows one way or another, and then I’ll talk about what i think.

OK! so that took a lot longer than expected. theres 18 manhunt videos! wow so, next i’m going to look at what each intro says. many of them are hard to categorize, so I’m going to do the best i can at 1 am. I might go back and edit this, I might not. who knows. intros that only talk about hunters killing speedrunner: 6/18 intros that only talk about speedrunner beating minecraft: 0/10 intros that talk about both: 12/18 alright so that isn’t super helpful, but there’s another thing. all of the recent ones talk about both. this is....decently important. he makes sure to say that the hunters are trying to stop him from beating minecraft (, or beating the ender dragon, stuff like that). with how the v4 went, dream did beat minecraft. however, in the mrbeast video, the intro is “if I kill them each one time, I win. if they beat the game before I do that, they win.” that specifically states that they have to beat the game BEFORE dream can kill all of them. now, yes, the collab manhunts do operate on different rules. however, this is the most detailed intro we have to work with, that isnt a full on black or white “if i do this, i win, if i do this, i lose.” this says BEFORE, meaning they can beat the game a tick after they die, and it’ll still be counted as a loss.

other important/detailed intros include the diamond juggernaut, where he says “can I beat the game before I’m stopped?”. “stopped” implies if he does not beat the dragon, he loses, no matter if its before or after he dies.

you could make an argument either way, really. one argument I make to myself is that if its said first, it’s more important, so the “If they kill me one time, i lose” overrules “if i beat the game, I win.” you could also argue that the main event of manhunt is the killing of the dragon, if that happens, and it can only happen in one place, its the GOAL, then he wins, no matter once. also, the “dream was killed” message was WAY before the dragons death

why do I think the hunters won? they killed him. their only goal was to kill him, they didnt have to survive, kill the dragon, anything. all they had to do was kill him, and they did. dreams goal was to survive and beat the dragon, he did one but not the other. also, in the analysis video, it seems like they agreed the hunters won. I’m not gonna go back and rewatch it, but dream was arguing that he won, and then calmed down and let the hunters say they won. their agreement on this makes me think that they also see his death (BEFORE the dragon dies) as their win. i think i remember dream saying that he’ll win next time? but i could be mistaken

seriously though, its a game. all of them had fun, theyre gonna get a HECK ton of views (its been just over an hour and already has >400k views and >200k likes. dream has improved his manhunt skills SO much, he thinks quicker, he killed them all SO much, he seemed to have practiced a lot. his editing has improved so so so SO much, the music choice was perfection, it was easy to follow but still the perfect amount of stressful. the hunters weren’t super coordinated, which makes sense, but they got him down to half a heart quite a few times, and if they practice together and come up with plans, they could definitely have a cleaner win. we all got an amazing video, they all got more attention, and they all improved. we all won. (but in game terms, dream lost. suck it, green boy)
