Moog 70th Anniversary & The Return of the Minimoog Model D
If you’ve been around the world of music for any length of time, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the name Moog, which has become synonymous with one of the most popular synthesizers of all time, the Minimoog Model D. What stands out about it? Well, it depends on whom you ask, but I think its unique, rich, raw, cutting, rumbling tone has something to do with it. What do you think? Whenever I’m…

Linda McCartney played on Paul's 1989 album Flowers in the Dirt (specifically the song Rough Ride). Producers Trevor Horn, Stephen Lipson, and Chris Hughes were completely besotted remember working with her:
Trevor Horn: The other thing that I remember about Rough Ride was that we brought Linda in and Linda played some really great synths. She came up with this idea for a mini-moog part. We really liked Linda. So I was pretty keen to get her on the record. She also seemed to have a really good influence on him. He really liked her, if you know what I mean. [I know] that’s a dumb thing to say, but he did. Sometimes you meet people who don’t like their wives, you know.
Stephen Lipson: She was wonderful; absolutely brilliant. I haven’t got a bad thought in my head about her. She was the best; so warm. She invited us into their lives in a really lovely way. And that was Rough Ride. And then we mixed it.
Chris Hughes: I got very close with Linda. She was great. I spent a lot of time with her, and both of them; just hanging out. The pair of them invited me around to their place and cooked supper and they were great. Linda, particularly, was wonderful.
Trevor Horn: What are my memories of it? My memories are of Linda. I’ve still got the photographs she took of me and Steve, I’ve got them up on the wall downstairs.

McNeal and Niles - Thrust - Wilbur Niles’ first, privately-pressed album from 1979. He would adopt Thrust as his band name and record 7 more albums of jazz-funk; the whole catalog has just been reissued by We Are Busy Bodies.
A track about an African king recorded in the back of a car wash commands $1,600. At the makeshift Man-Ray Studios in Akron, Ohio, where barrels of soap were rolled away to make room for recording, guitarist Wilbur Niles and his then-girlfriend, Machelle McNeal, recorded "Ja Ja." Niles, a history major, titled it after King Jaja, who rose from slavery to become a wildly successful broker of palm oil in the 19th century. The humid tranquil track would lead off the pair's first and only album together, 1979's Thrust. It begins with an elliptical little electric-piano hook by McNeal, an accomplished musician without much jazz experience, accompanied by wind sounds. The effect is of sparkles of sunlight through an otherwise dense sheet of fog. Thrust exists in that blurry, liminal space between jazz, funk, soul, and R&B; ‘70s-era CTI comes to mind, but the unpolished vibe sloughs off that comparison, too. Even when “Summer Fun” goes for a four-on-the-floor feeling, the mid-fidelity production renders it diaphanous. The more strident “Punk Funk” is a nod to Devo, whose road crew ran Man-Ray. (“They’re punk; I’m the funk!” Niles explained with a laugh, on the Sounds Visual Radio podcast.) You’ll swear you’ve heard Thrust sampled somewhere in the hip-hop sphere; pull up “Ja Ja” on YouTube, and you’ll see a comment to that end: “Pete Rock sent me here.” (Google comes up short on that one, but WhoSampled cites the following track, “Summer Fun,” as appearing in Canadian house/electronica producer Daphni’s “Hey Drum” and British techno/house DJ and producer Trus’me’s “At the Disco.” All in all, its place in the hip-hop and DJ worlds remains to be fully understood. But due to its charm and scarcity, Thrust remains undoubtedly popular among crate-diggers — hence the hefty price of an original copy. The album’s ramshackle quality places it less in Kool and the Gang territory than something ripe for reappraisal by the Williamsburg set — fitting nicely between one’s Arthur Russell, Ata Kak, and Little Beaver LPs. And this carries through the rest of Thrust — "Hypertension," "Untitled," "Quiet Isle," and "One Slave, One Gun." — by Morgan Enos Norman Crumb: Drum Kit Don Wade: Bass Willie Taylor: Congas, Bongos, and Percussion Machelle McNeal: Arp Oddyssey, Mini Moog, Poly Moog, EML 500, Rhodes Piano, Wurlitzer Piano, Hammond B3 Wilbur Niles: Guitar, Percussion, and Synthesizer Vocals by - Machelle McNeal and Norman Crumb

The most popular Eurorack module is Make Noise's MATHS, which is sometimes described as an analog computer. Some years ago, synth YouTuber loopop did a video about the module, starting by breaking down the basic functions into three parts: attenuverting, mixing, and slew rate limiting. Attenuverting is a portmanteau of "attenuating" — turning down — and "inverting"; mixing combines signals by adding them together; slew rate limiting is slowing down the rate of change of a signal, making it rise or fall more slowly. By combining these functions (and the extra features Make Noise included), loopop demonstrated about 22 different things a MATHS can do, from basic envelope generation to LFOs to sidechaining to even acting as an audio filter or VCA.
I don't have a MATHS; it's a bit too pricey for my budget (though it's by no means the most expensive of Make Noise's many desirable modules). I have instead a home-built combination of three modules: two copies of Voxmachina's Sigma function and slew generator and a three-channel mixer of my own design, with attenuverters on two of those input channels. And when I just rewatched that loopop video, it turns out my setup can do all but three of those 22 functions, because my mixer doesn't have an analog OR output or a separate inverted output. Which is not too bad for a much lower price point and the satisfaction of saying I made it myself.
(I've gone through some MATHS cookbooks before to translate their patches to a dual Sigma setup, and there are, of course, a couple of other features that MATHS provides and my setup lacks. The MATHS slew channels have independent and simultaneous CV control over rise, fall, and "both", where Sigma provides the equivalent of a "both" and a switchable CV input over one of those; in MATHS, the slope shape, from exponential through linear to logarithmic, is selectable without self-patching; there isn't a gate input to control cycling; and MATHS channel 1 has an "end of rise" trigger instead of the "end of cycle" one that channel 4 or Sigma provides. The kinds of patches that require one or more of the missing features aren't enough to make me desperate to upgrade, but they'd be nice. Replacing the mini mixer with a larger version with attenuverters on each input and an OR out is in the medium-term plans.)
loopop did a follow-up video about using a MATHS to duplicate the dual-suboscillator function of the then-unreleased Moog Subharmonicon, and it turns out my setup can do that too — I was just listening to my system rigged to divide down a VCO signal with the Sigmas, to create random chords from a single note.

Take one member of Electrelane and one member of Wire and you get mini supergroup Memorials.@memorialsmusic I never got to see Electrelane live, the timing was all wrong for me so was interested in seeing Verity's new project with Matthew Simms of Wire.  Originally releasing soundtracks for the films Tramps and Woman Against the Bomb, both albums have a very different feel and their music takes on various formats and moods, elecletic, experimental, tape loops, Moogs, it's difficult to pinpoint.

The yearly tradition returns: 2022's Summary of Art!
And hey, I did something a little more design-y than my past ones! Will admit it was a bit tricky to fit each month's pics into the frames this time but I'm glad I tried a different look than usual
thoughts on each pic + reflection on the web + how I want to handle art going into the new year below:
January - Iri Intro!
From a somewhat short-lived thing I wanted to try out: Doing sketches of OCs just to serve as an introduction reguardless of quality. The good thing is, because quality's not a factor I can do these whenever in whatever format or polish. I just prefered doing larger pics this year
-
Febuary - A 'Cereal' Debate (comic short)
Ok, but she's got a point when you think about it.
From a comics class I took spring this year. The only prompt was "conversation"... well, heated debate in this case.
-
March - The School Mystery (comic short)
Another one from that Comics class and goddamn I think the panel featured here alone is one of the hardest things I drew that semester. That's pen and ink with minimal digital edits and damn hoping one day I could somehow make a longer comic with a similar style bc it was really fun to ink honestly.
-
April - The Fish Project
JADE WITH THE FRESH SALMON???? REAL!
Ok but for the real context, this was an April fools project I had in the works since 2021. I turned all my active art accounts at the time into an OC Fishing irony page and sent Jade, Iri, Risa, Jpeg, and both Prisma's on a fishing trip. Not sure how I'll top that in the future... I'm not revealing until April >:)
-
May - MOONROT
May was when I redesigned & revealed Io to the public! They got a bunch of art this month, but the CN challenge art is my favorite of all of them.
Huh. Suprised I didn't immediately burn out because that semester was extreme in terms of work. I guess wanting to draw Io was that strong.
-
June - Life, After Wither
A pre-Artfight 2022 pic: I was Team Wither! I like doing splash pics for my own page for Artfight and this stayed my main banner for just about most of the year.
The mini-story I made up for this is these three teamed up across dimentions or something to visit this forest.
-
July - In the Studio, fr
I don't normally do post-Artfight related pics, but Moog ended up getting the most attacks this year and I wanted to give her an extra pic based on it.
Seems she kept a souviner from the forest in the last pic.
-
August - B-Hold! The Portal King!
For Clockday on Newgrounds, Strawberry clock the portal King himself!
Kept getting swept up with other things to jump on Newgrounds events, I wasn't gonna miss one of the bigger ones!
-
September - //  DIRECTION //
(outside of being gay for the robot-) I just wanted to draw Alia tbh. With a similar energy she had in her older art too.
-
October - HELLSPAWN
ABSOLUTELY NEFARIOUS HALLOWEEN PIC!!!
Featuring Io's true/original form + their 'powered-up' state
-
November - The Fowl Pest (Mock-Cover)
The last two are for my Digital Illustration class. This one is a mock-book cover based on a worldbuilding project of mine (still need to organize it before sharing).
Though tbh if I do want to do more art for said project I might go tra-digital or use a grittier style. During crit I was told this looked "middle-grade"... when the world is "older-YA/Adult"... still like the pic, but damn.
-
December - Lan Party!
*Sigh* Always wanted to go to one of these! But alas, me and my irls are all busy these days. This is based off a different project I'm working on.
I ended up debuting some different designs for my OCs for said project (notably; Iri, Risa, and Human!Midi) but separate pics for them will have to come next year. In terms of digital lineart, this was the most intense I did this year (traditional lineart comes easier to me than digital).

So... 2022. Jesus Christ
This year was rough for me on things personal, and things non-personal. I mean jesus christ every other week something came out that was hostile to artists one way or another on top of some rough patches in my life. I don't want to jinx 2023 or leave things on this note though...
I think my biggest takeaway from this year is I need to rethink a lot of things. How I want to do art, where I want to go, or even my 'digital wellbeing'. This year, I realized keeping art a Hobby or staying "part-time" (as in small gigs & private comms only) might be healthier for me in the long run. I've already had my doubts with a lot of "professional" practices when I was shooting for it (a tl:dr it felt like "no fun allowed" half the time). But realizing how horribly i've treated myself and my art with this chase? That was another thing.
I think i've done a lot of strong pics compared to past years. Especially in terms of backgrounds and not being afraid to draw them (though I could always use more practice, lol). But I've also come to terms with I've been affected by social media without realizing it and how it hurt how I do art. Basically, for the past two years I've been working under the fear of being boxed into doing one thing. Be it fanart, genres, etc. To the point I stopped doing things to force a "brand". Specifically, I stopped doing fanart unless it's oc-centric. I hid straight-up fanart, and started getting irrationally upset over the metrics fanart gets over my original works.
And I hate it. I hate how I let myself judge the value of my work over "numbers and engagement". I hate how I boxed myself in trying to avoid being boxed, because of chasing this corporate measurement of worth. And most importantly, I hate that I nearly forgot that I enjoyed making fanart, because of some dumb culture caused by social media numbers and algorithms. I'm exhausted. So for 2023, I think I want my main resolution to do better with my online life & how I treat myself and my art. I want to pull away from social media a bit more (ironic considered i just came back here heh), spend more time on the slower web & offline if possible, and break that cycle of letting numbers judge my self-worth. And maybe help others do the same. It's much easier said than done, but I don't want to do nothing about this toxic hellscape that is how art is treated online, I want to do something even if the only person I directly help is myself.
And for what it's worth, focusing on my site so far has been cathartic. It's somewhere I can set up my art, projects, weird shit, etc. on my own terms, how I like it. It's quieter over there. And I'm glad I kept working on it beyond just a "portfolio site".
But I guess I have all of 2023 (and what's left of 2022) to process that. For now, I could use some extra time to pretty-up my website some more and take a few more naps before the year ends.

Review of Neutral Milk Hotel’s and Olivia Tremor Control’s show in St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 9 May 1997.
transcript:
At The Side Door: More Than The Names Are Weird
NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL/OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL Side Door, Monday, May 5 By Matt Fernandes Special to the Post-Dispatch
An intense bunch of aging punk fans drifted into the Side Door looking for something more than the tiresome three-chords-and-out performances delivered by many a touring band. In their quest for meaning, they turned to Neutral Milk Hotel, a band that has made national waves over the last year.
Despite the critical acclaim for Neutral Milk Hotel's debut album, “On Avery Island,” only about half of the floor space was occupied throughout the show. As band leader Jeff Mangum took the stage alone, the small gathering huddled close to the stage. They did not get too close, though, as Mangum announced that he was ill with a 100 degree temperature. Also, his drummer “couldn't be here.”
Not a promising start, but perhaps the strength of the band's songs alone would offset the fatigue factor.
Not the case.
Mangum labored through an eight-song, acoustic set with few highlights. Mangum dominated the songs with his bold guitar work and vehement voice. Often. Mangum appeared ready to eat the microphone as his voice rang through the speakers. The effect was often awkward. Lowering the volume would have been appropriate for the band’s folksy, slower tunes.
Not surprisingly, the instrumentals were the strong points. Julian Koster played the “singing saw" during some tunes, giving a surreal element to the music. The instrument consisted of a violin bow and a rusty saw, which Koster would bend to play. The bizarre sound was similar to the loony, high-pitched sound effects used in early horror films and original “Star Trek” episodes. An accordion and clarinet also were thrown into the mix on certain instrumentals. One memorable tune took on a traditional Irish sound, although the instruments used were anything bat traditional or Irish.
On album standouts like “Song Against Sex" and “Naomi”, the band lacked coordination. The jubilant horns, which made “Song Against Sex” so great on the record, were not only sloppy, but inaudible live. Some of the beauty of “Naomi” was lost due to miscommunication. A death-defying final note was held for a mini millennium by Mangum, thus salvaging the tune.
The set featured several new numbers that sounded promising, despite the somewhat crippled delivery.
Olivia Tremor Control's performance was upbeat by comparison. This band knew its material and played it in style. OTC blended the oddest of instruments to achieve a chaotic, yet pleasing sound, (Well, most of the time.)
It was a true country jamboree. Some of the oddball instruments include a banjo bowed with a violin bow, a sawed-off trumpet, a Moog synthesizer combined with a Casio keyboard and a strange wood box with electrical wires.
OTC's songs were tighter than those of NMH, their soul and label mates on Elephant 6. Funky bass lines gave the crowd a reason to dance. Impressive four-part melodies were featured on many songs. When the band jammed, their sound was earthy, with strictly positive lyrics, reflecting the bright and sunny atmosphere of their hometown of Athens, Ga. Each song held surprises, though: exploring homemade electronics during extended jams is clearly this band's passion.
