Beside Running Waters
Tumblr media
A Purple Heron preening itself in the Kingfisher Wetlands just before the sky opens up. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
To capture the smooth flow of waters, the ISO was extended down to 50 to get a slow 0.3-second shutter. It also helped that the sky had happened to be darkening with an approaching thunderstorm.

Muhahahahaha!
It is I, the dastardly Count! Koffin! K!
I see you study those silly echo flowers!
Well how would you react, if one got destroyed?
-@countkoffink
Oh! Uh- Well, echo flowers get trampled all the time... they're rather delicate, so unfortunately Im no stranger to some mean-spirited individuals destroying them, or even just well-meaning but rowdy kids...
Usually, I'll take one of the petals, if there's any left, and add it to this jar- And when it's full, I'll send all of the petals on their way through the water. I've never actually figured out where they end up...
(Wait, was this a threat?)

As someone who doesn't do photography I will put my unqualified opinion is this ring. I feel with tripods it's more for stuff if you plan to be there for a while that way your arms don't for holding the position for to long.
back on my photography grind
i do agree with this. i also think "planning to be there for a while" is very much not something i do. i have an "Adventure Photography" book i got in a national park since I'd only had my camera a week at the time and needed something to guide me offline, and it also recommends a tripod....but in the context of getting nice landscapes and waiting for good light. I'm very much a "bring my camera on a hike/walk and look for cool things" sort of person

this is a good point! i also want to say i didn't mean to imply tripods weren't useful for anyone because i very obviously see their value for stabilization. my hands aren't shaky, so i don't get much blur. I also know one of my lenses has internal stabilization (IS) features which likely help me. i was even taking photos at twilight the other day and they were in focus and all i did was sort of stabilize it against my arm/knee. i also tend to not take so many long exposure shots

@teainthedust i really really appreciate the macro tips!! because the original post was well. brought on because i somewhat impulsively bought a macro lens because my favorite thing to photograph is flowers and Small Creatures lol. i especially appreciate the shutter speed tip, I'm still new to learning stuff like that
i actually do have a small tripod i got very recently that was for my phone, but it does have the right mount to also attach to my camera. I can see how it would be useful for macro, because it would be close enough to the ground for flowers/bugs etc and easily moveable (probably don't have to detach the camera every time you want to move because the whole thing is small enough.) unfortunately I'm pretty sure my lens is WAY too heavy to work with it. I know some setups have supports for heavier lenses but idk if it'd be something a small cheap tripod would have. i haven't tested it because my lens hasn't come in but i basically see no way it doesn't tip over haha
i definitely need to mess around more with sport mode or continuous shooting for action stuff as well, I've been unprepared for a lot of my wildlife shots so far. maybe my camera will let me save presets for manual settings i can switch to quickly? it has a preset action one but i can't mess with any other settings on that. idk, I'll figure it out
anyway i appreciated all these answers! basically i was confused/annoyed that basically all photography advice i see is like YOU NEED A TRIPOD when I feel like most of what i do is squat down in the middle of a field to take pictures of bees and flowers or hike 3 miles with my camera bag slung across my shoulders lol
