A guide to the ball room : being a complete compendium of the etiquette of dancing : with the figures of all the quadrilles, gallopades, mazourkas, polonaises, etc., etc., beautifully embellished / by a man of fashion.
A guide to the ball room is a stunning little book dated all the way back to 1884. Detailing many etiquette and dancing rules, along with instructions, this book is a perfect guide to learning the ins and outs of the ball room.
The back of the book also features a glossary of French terms often used in the ball room. So grab a partner, read this book, and get to dancing--just like those from the 1800s!

In the Land of Tiny Books
Our Head of Special Collections Max Yela has collaborated for decades with Milwaukee artist and art professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) Leslie Fedorchuk (on the left in the first image; Max is on the right). This semester, Leslie is teaching a MIAD course called "Magical Miniatures" and she brought her class over for a discussion and review of artists books that use small scale as expression.
While Max is not very fond of miniatures or the miniaturization of books, he does like books that are small for compositional reasons. In fact, one of his favorite artists books, In Here Out There (third image) by the late Minnesota artist Jody Williams, is quite small (5 x 7 cm). Since we hold about 95% of Jody Williams's work and about 90% of the small editioned work of Peter & Donna Thomas, after a discussion, the class spent time reviewing selected works by these artists, plus about a dozen others by local book artists.
This was the first time these art students, many of them Juniors and Seniors, had ever encountered artists books before, and all expressed that it was a transformative experience. We look forward to seeing some of the book work that comes out of the assignments for this class!
The photographs shown here were taken by MIAD Web Content Specialist Olivia Langby.

Tiny Thumb Tuesday
This little guy is an 1849 printing of a very condensed version of the Bible. Commonly known as “thumb bibles” these tiny books were (and are) popular gift items. Despite the small physical size of the pages, the print itself is not tiny, and easy to read.
The Thumb Bible: Verbum sempiternum. John Taylor, ed. The third edition, with amendments.  London: Longman and Co., 1849.

The Little Sand Crab/ By D'Ambrosio
The Little Sand Crab is an artist's book published in 1981 by The Compulsive Printer press. It was written, typeset, illustrated, designed, and bound by printer D'Ambrosio. The book is set in Bulmer, printed on Ingres Oyster paper, and stands at 74 mm tall. The cover is bound in red cloth and contains an openwork design of golden sun rays. UI Special Collections has copy no. 7 of a limited edition 85 copies.
This warped Princess and the Frog type tale - but with a crab of course - D'Ambrosio himself describes to be "the story of how the greed of one lover can goad the other into committing uncharacteristic acts."

THE HOLY QUR’AN (India, Mughal Empire, 16th - 19th centuries)
This miniature book has a white nephrite cover inlaid with gold and set with rubies and emeralds. The case, designed as a pendant, is enamelled with champleve and set with diamonds, rubies and emeralds.
The Mughal Empire was important for bringing together almost the entire Indian subcontinent under one domain. It was known for its cultural influence and its architectural achievements —most famously, the Taj Mahal.

I enjoy reading a little…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That was a pun. Yes it was necessary.
I LOVE to read. And I’ve been wanting to make a tiny library of my favorite books for a while. When the perfect drawer showed up on marketplace I snatched it up!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I noodled for a while on how I wanted it to look. But then I decided to dive right in!
I painted the tray matte black and installed doors on the lower outside bays. This was for interest, plus other reasons.
Tumblr media
In the center I built a replica of my readin’ spot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have so. many. more. books. to make. Luckily, they are very easy:
1. Print images of the covers and spine at your desired scale.
2. Glue the cover art to smooth cardstock and carefully cut out the cover. If the inside edges of the cardstock do not match the main color of the cover, fill in with marker.
3. Fold the covers and spine around layers of craft foam for paper and glue. You can also use folded paper with pages printed on them if you would like the books to open, but in my experience that style rarely wants to stay closed, so I only do it for things like graphic novels where the pages look more unique.
Tumblr media
I generally read between 50 and 75 books a year. So I already have dozens of favorite books in the queue to be miniaturized. It will take me a while to fill it I’m sure, I’ll also include little oddities and tchotchkes.
This is one of those projects that’s only for my own personal joy, but I hope it brings you some too.

Everything in Queen Mary's Doll House is fully functioning: lights, plumbing, books, and furniture. It was a craftsman's gift to Queen Mary in the 1920's, and is still on display in Windsor Castle.
