Plants: Terrariums
All along the walls were small terrariums, landscapes squeezed into miniature form. Tristan made them almost obsessively. When she asked him once, he told her it was because he wished the world were easier. Small enough and manageable enough to fit in the hollow of ones palm.

I don’t recall where I first got the idea to make a “Secret Garden Box,” but I’ve collected decorative boxes for years, and I’ve always loved miniatures, as well as formal gardens, so I suppose it felt natural to combine those interests in one package. To create the gardens I start with a bare wood box, and decide on its finish, either paint or lacquer or metal-leaf, then add cast metal feet, and in the case of one of the boxes shown, a jeweled medallion for the lid. I want the box itself to be attractive and interesting just sitting on its own before the interior surprise is revealed.
As for the tiny gardens themselves, the plants are made of modeling clay and other elements (such as the pergola) are made of wood which is cut, sanded and fitted. Everything is then painted and “weathered,” if called for. Unlike say, train set miniatures, I’m not aiming to achieve a realistic look as I feel the gardens should have a bit of whimsy and “feel” handmade, which they are. Also, there is no little doorways or opening in the surrounding “hedge,” as the gardens may only be accessed from above when the lid is removed, and in one’s imagination.
I’ve started planning my next garden box which I think will consist of a tiled-roof cloister with an herb garden and a well.

Depression can cast a HUGE shadow over our lives, but miniatures and fairy gardens have the strength and power to illuminate even the darkest of depressive episodes. In my experience with ADHD, mood dysregulation, and manic and depressive cycles, the miniatures and fairy gardens have absolutely become my safe space, especially in such a scary and chaotic world (as well as our minds)! The act of building these miniature worlds becomes a source of hope and purpose. The imaginative escape offered by fairy gardens and miniatures allows us to temporarily step into a realm where positivity and magic prevail, offering a respite from the weight of depression. While nothing can replace the helpfulness that medications and therapeutic treatments available to us through modern science and psychology can have, fairy gardens have brought a new dimension and meaning to what it means for ME to find peace and joy in my life, even throughout the depressive episodes.

Plants: Unconventional Planters
The garden, historically, is the place where all the senses are exploited. Not just the eye, but the ear – with water, with birds. And there is texture, too, in plants you long to touch.

I made a miniature garden for the mouse named Ms. Fisuna and her pet cat! They're safely housed inside a glass dome. Mouse, cat, and the garden are hand made out of polymer clay by me. The lilac bush in the garden is flocked with miniature greenery. This tiny scene is available in my shop: https://truenoir.art/fisuna-mouse-and-cat-polymer-clay-figurine/
