Anomaly: a remake of a minizine i wrote in highschool. I wanted to make a story with unhelpful and somewhat unrelated text filling up the page as the protagonist panics😵‍💫fitting it all into a minizine (8 pages including covers) was a challenge!

My contribution to Ihni’s amazing minizine idea! The theme I chose was growth, cause I have such a soft spot for Billy being a bit of a plant dad! I had so much fun experimenting with different ways of creating, and I hope you enjoy it. The full pages are under the cut along with the text for the images. 

(Text: Let us live like flowers, wild and beautiful and drenched in sun.)

(Text: Steve’s first pie burns, and Billy’s first seedling withers and dies. But it’s OK. They’ve got plenty of time to try again. So they do. The next time is a little better. The time after that, even more so. By the summer, Billy grows a whole crop of strawberries, and Steve bakes them up in a perfect, golden tart. They taste the sweetness on each other’s lips.)

(Text: It poured out of him. Uncontrolled. Fear and pain and anger. It pulsed through him. He watched as Neil’s skin blackened. Rotted. Withered. A dead limb on a tree.)

(Text: Steve smiled. At him. Because of him. And Billy couldn’t stop it. All that he felt. All that he’d ever felt. It unfurled in his chest and spread down his arms and erupted from him. It blossomed. And the world around him blossomed too. Buds sprang into bloom. The room filled with colour and scent and life.)

(Text: You found the seeds. Your steady hands poured the water. You were the sun towards which I stretched. But the growth? That violent act of breaking through? The agony of reaching out? That was all me)

It almost feels like too much, really, for the space. But Billy keeps on giving, and Steve’s lived too long with ‘not enough’. ‘Almost too much’ is a welcome change.  Steve comes home with another succulent in a large, yellow pot.  Billy smiles, warm and soft, as he finds a space to put it, then he turns to Steve with eyes full of love. Steve finds a place to put it.)

This week’s zine review is of “#GameOfShrooms” by @seagreenzines!

(I think the title is Game of Shrooms. That’s what’s on the back cover!)

Nyx wrote a minizine talking about mushrooms! There’s some discussion of the different uses for the plant(?) as well as a little about Nyx’s interest in the topic. And there’s stuff on the inside too! That’s always a fun surprise in a minizine.

I’m a Food Network fan, so when I think “mushrooms” I think delicious! But there’s so much more to them than that. I’m happy that Nyx sent this to me. It was a nice read!
