hello!! i’m cece and i’m happy to be here with minzhen!! ningning obviously doesn’t have a lot of gifs so i’ll ask everybody to be patient with me as more aespa content comes out and i can make gifs for her! anyway, under the cut i have some backstory + personality information for minzhen that you can also find here. i don’t have a plots page for her quite yet but she’s been around the company since 2018! so it’s a comfortable amount of time for her to have met a lot of people. give this post a like and i’ll hit you up ♡

BACKSTORY

born to a plastic artist mother and a father who’s the guitarist and lead singer of a rock band, minzhen’s life was always surrounded by art

started taking pipa lessons when she was very young, after that it was only a few years before she took up the bass

didn’t do very well at school which her parents never seemed to care about because they knew she’d end up following in their footsteps and venturing into the artistic fields

(she started drawing and painting from an early age and got pretty good at it, really good at chinese caligraphy as well)

started singing lessons at age 10, would sing in events here and there, got really good at singing by the time she was 15

that was the year she auditioned for legacy

as dailan and seoul are really close from each other (it’s a one hour flight), minzhen had been to seoul quite a few times and was not a stranger to either kpop or korean music in general

didn’t care much for kpop specifically at first but enjoyed other types of music from the place

went through a phase, at around 14, of being really obsessed with blazing and decided to audition for the company because of them

never really had any interest in becoming an idol, which was why her parents were reluctant to let her go at first but she insisted and they allowed

very quickly became tired of the idol training schedule and the possibility of becoming an idol eventually, and has been longing for a while to switch to the bands path

only hasn’t done it so far because she’s hesitant she won’t be taken seriously because she’s a girl

plans on doing it though

PERSONALITY

in simple words, she’s a tomboy. part of the reason why she strongly believes she wouldn’t do well as an idol is because she doesn’t think she could live up to the image companies expect idols to have. she’s like an overexcited puppy and doesn’t care much for appearances.

very blunt, very honest, but not in a way intending to harm people. she just can’t keep her thoughts to herself most of the time and lets them out impulsively. as a consequence, she’s a bit immature and doesn’t know how to deal with other people’s bad reactions to when she runs her mouth.

very protective of friends and family, misses her family dearly and calls her mother every single day. she’s a very familial person.

an extrovert that will be friendly with everyone and try to have as many friends as possible, doesn’t matter who they are and where they come from.

after two and a half years in korea, her korean is okay. obviously can carry conversations and doesn’t have many problems with pronunciation, but will misunderstand some idioms that she doesn’t know and still lacks a bit in vocabulary,

very bisexual. both her parents are bisexual as well so she jokes it’s a family trait.

2020

And we are finally down to the last day of 2020.

2020 felt a lot like a year full of discovering, learning and accepting the beauty of self-care, self-love and self-worth. Those were things I did not learn to do before. I used to base my happiness on others; on how they treated me or talked to me. When friendships or relationships went wrong, I devalued myself. Was it because I was not enough? Or was it because I was too much?

I hated how I let people make me feel like I deserved any less.

Then came the pandemic. Everyone was forced to stay at home and take a breather from this fast-paced life. I finally found time to sit myself down and to properly think about life, alone (sometimes with sam, sometimes with minzhen). Why did certain things happen this way? What can I learn from it? How can I do better? How can I prevent it? How do I react to it? Things like that.

The biggest lesson learnt this year was really to be independent. I learnt it the hardest way possible (I feel). When a person learns to be alone, he/she becomes powerful. So powerful that nothing seems to matter anymore. Of course, I don’t wish to brush it off as being numb. I don’t want to tell people I am too numb to feel anything anymore. Some things still hurt me. It still haunts me at night when I least expect it to. But more than anything else, it doesn’t matter anymore. The fact that I am able to let go of things that used to hurt me when I didn’t get any closure or apology, is good enough for me. I learnt to love myself first. I learnt to care for myself first. Not anyone else, but myself.

And for all of that, I want to pat myself on the head and say,

“I am so, so proud of you.”

2020, you’ve taught me so much.

2021, I hope you will be better.

both the instruments minzhen already knew how to play had less strings than the guitar, so she often felt tempted to use that as an excuse whenever the girl didn’t manage to improve after a lesson. it was bullshit and minzhen was fairly aware of it – the pipa was an extremely complicated instrument that she had been learning her entire life and still wasn’t profecient at, and the bass was way harder to learn than people gave it credit. minzhen wasn’t a stranger to high difficulty when it came to learning instruments, much less string ones as that was what she had spent a good decade of her life learning, yet even after almost a year of practicing the guitar, the girl couldn’t get a proper grasp on it.

“i’ve already told you it’s because you can’t let go of the mentality you built learning the bass,” the coach told her, for the nth time. the man was probably sick of reminding minzhen over and over again that she just had to stop trying to play the guitar as if it was a bass. “i’m not your therapist to get into the psychology of it, but you’re practically forcing yourself not to learn it. you know all the chords, it’s literally just your little head keeping your hand from doing the right work.”

minzhen groaned, body falling over the guitar on her lap. she was tired. her vocal and instrument lessons were the only ones she looked forward to. the dance practice the girl had had earlier that day had destroyed her body and spirit from the minute the trainer had put on a sexy girl group song for the girls to learn the choreography of.

“i’m trying,” she whined, ignoring the man’s chuckle. he just went back to plucking the strings of the guitar and minzhen looked up to watch the practiced ease with which he did it. “why did i decide to learn the guitar? i could’ve made it to a band only playing the bass couldn’t i?”

the trainer didn’t answer her but minzhen knew the answer. if it was already hard for a girl to get in a band, how much harder would it be if she was only a bass player? minzhen shuddered to think what would’ve been her fate if, back when she was nine, the girl had gone into learning the drums as she originally decided she would.

“okay, let’s do this,” she sat up, setting the guitar properly on her lap. she prefered the acoustic over the electric, but it was exactly because of it that today’s lesson was focused on the electric.

“follow my lead,” the man said, and minzhen did just that.
