I do have an old sketch (this is without all the scribbles and info around it, as it looked messy):

Isabela is very much modelled after Alma. She purposefully starts braiding her hair again in the lead up to Antonio’s ceremony, just to fuck with Abuelo. And her dress usually carries an element of magenta. (Everyone’s colour stays the same, so she is still in indigo for the most part). Subsequently, the combination of Alma’s features helps hammer home the idea that Isabela’s identity isn’t quite her own.

Luisa, whose muscles are slightly toned down here but not gone entirely (as that seems to be a common feature in gift swap AUs for no reason), is very plain in terms of clothing and pattern. She wants to be seen as a good part of the community. Taking inspiration from the townspeople and would probably be in a common shade of blue, rather than her purple. Alongside the doorknob, she gets gifted a more individualised dress from her sisters (Isabela dyed it, Mirabel embroidered on it) - Mira didn’t think a doorknob was personal enough.

(Side note: Luisa doesn’t embroider or wear glasses or anything else. I don’t know why in most gift swap AUs, the giftless person always ends up with embroidery and glasses. Wtf? Let Mirabel keep her goddamn character. Their skillsets, personalities and style ideas wouldn’t change with them - maybe with an exception of whoever ended up the golden child).

Omg I would love this! And unpopular opinion but I legit think that Mariano is smarter than he looks. I mean only Mirabel seems to think of him as dumb and only she calls him a “big dumb hunk”, like not even Isabela does that. And Dolores also fell in love with him for his poetry. And his grandmother says he wrote a song for the madrigals! I’d love to see the franchise continue to show his creative and artistic side more! I feel like he’d be the heart to Dolores’ head, and that is just beautiful.

Angst Au based on something I noticed. Mirabel climbs on the roof of Casita a lot. Casita probably helps her because it trust's itself and her to keep her safe.

It was Mirabel's Sixth birthday and everyone was too busy to notice. Because it was year to the day that the candle had flickered for the first time since the Encanto had been built, everyone was put into overdrive because there was still tension about the date when it was brought up in the village. Everyone had been woken up early by Alma. By the time Mirabel woke up, breakfast was already over and everyone was gone. Julieta had at least left her a plate of food but Alma left a note telling her not to come into town and to stay home. There was no mention of her birthday which saddened the birthday girl. But maybe she could do something to make up for it.

She spent all afternoon making her own decorations and Casita helped her put them up. She saved some arepas from breakfast and found a few candles. It wasn't much but it would save her mother from having to be in the kitchen when she got home. She even put on her birthday dress from the year before.

It was nearly nighttime by the time that the family got home. Julieta was tired, Pepa had a headache from all the crying she'd done all day, Dolores did as well. Camilo's body aches from changing so much to entertain other kids for adults, Luisa was dirty from a donkey pushing her into there mud when she was trying to catch them and Isabela was just in a bad mood.

When Alma saw that Mirabel had put up decorations, she scolded the girl for making a mess of Casita, telling her to clean it all up and being angry that she was wearing her ceremony dress. When Mirabel tried to explain, she was cut off and told to go to her room, that the family didn't have time for her nonsense. She was to stay in her room until dinner was ready. It devastated Mirabel. She went upstairs with eyes full of tears before deciding that rather than hide in her room, she'd hide on Casita's roof. She stayed up there a long time before falling asleep

When Everyone was clean and Julieta had gotten dinner cooked, they called up the stairs for Mirabel. Mirabel was surprised awake by them calling for her and unfortunately started rolling off Casita's roof. Casita tried to catch her with the handrails of the second floor. Too bad that wood is not soft. Mirabel's back hit the rail hard before falling onto the first floor with a scream

The family came rushing to see what was happening and it was clear she'd been hurt. Julieta quickly gave Mirabel a part of the meal but nobody was prepared after she slowed her crying and told them that she couldn't feel her legs

Nah cause wtf 😭😭 you fr gon stop celebrating her birthday as a whole. And then when she tries to do it herself out of your way. You wanna get made. And why didn’t anybody stand up for her, that is so messed up??? I hope they feel guilty for what happened, cause. Mirabel shouldn’t have been subjected to that. Like what the hell. Maybe y’all wouldn’t be so tired and worn out if you just. Idk, threw a party. It’s certainly a lot less tiring.

I just spent some quality time with my aunt, so I’m mostly thinking about her while I’m coming up with this.

Do you think the triplets have ever fought about their kids going behind their backs with their aunt and uncles’ help?

Imagine Julieta told her kids to stay away from the river because “that’s where tragedy strikes”, but Pepa and Felix bring their nieces to it as a form of emotional healing, because Luisa suddenly became afraid of water after Julieta unwittingly hammered it into her head that water leads to death. And then they come back and Julieta and Agustin are waiting like “wtf Pepa, you know Papa was killed there!” I just feel like everyone’s had bad blood in the family at least once, and the kids are compelled to keep their parents together.

Given how literally EVERYONE collectively stopped talking about Bruno when he “left”, what else do you think they refuse to address? I noticed a big portion of the fandom saw how Pepa’s children have more of an age gap between them compared to Julieta’s, and theorized that Pepa either struggled to conceive or suffered loss of pregnancy. Personally, I think it was just to offer another form of representation to what families look like (ie a dark-skinned woman with a light-skinned man and a light-skinned woman with a dark-skinned man) but it’s understandable to believe that’s what the writers were going for, because it’s something a lot of couples do suffer from.

What if there was an instance where Julieta was too late, and couldn’t save her sister’s pregnancy? That would be absolutely heart-breaking, and it makes sense that nobody would want to bring it up so most of the grandchildren don’t even know it happened. But what if one of the younger family members discovered it, and brought it up in lieu of the movie’s ending where the parents encourage them to speak out more and be honest? Like the musical Next to Normal, when it’s revealed that the son was just a hallucination because he unfortunately passed away years ago and his mother couldn’t cope with the loss.

And I’d love more aunt/uncle moments in general, not just Mirabel and Bruno. Give me a younger Isabela who saw someone have a panic attack at school and knew how to help because of Pepa’s anxious spirals. I want Antonio to get stung by a bee (that sounded so mean, oh my gosh) and Agustin to make him feel better while they find Julieta. Let me see Bruno act as a director for Camilo’s school play, and give him honest critique.

When does roleswap!Mirabel realize she's in love? If it's not too spoiler-y

Ohhh anon that's such a good question ahh i have SOME ideas, not too spoilery I think. I think the first time Mirabel gets the idea that her feelings for Isabela may not be entirely of a platonic nature may be during one very specific scene I have in mind, or rather a progression of scenes, in reality it could be a whole chapter.

Basically: Mirabel and Isabela had a fight while at the treehouse, it gets bad, they're discussing very sensitive topics and Mirabel ends up having an anxiety/panic attack. She has NEVER had one in front of someone else before. She always kept everything so under control, that she never let them knew she even had them. It horrifies her that Isabela can see her while she's so weak and vulnerable, but it actually ends up being good for her because... well, Isabela used to have these too when she was Mirabel's age, she understands what it's like. After weeks of dismissing her sister as an annoying little brat she needs to get rid of, this is when she realizes Mirabel has a serious problem and could probably use some help. Right now, the only person around is Isabela - she realizes she crossed a line and ended up cornering Mirabel into a very stressful situation, and she really didn't mean to actually hurt her, she just wanted to get rid of her, but her reaction makes her stop on her tracks. This is the moment in which their relationship does a 180°, because Isabela sees a whole other side of Mirabel and it compels her to try to help instead of constantly telling her to fuck up. She inevitably sees her younger self in her and remember how alone and scared she fet.

She kneels in front of her and tries to help her in whatever ways she knows - she speaks softly, tries to get her to focus on something else, maybe makes her a flower and tells her to count its petals? She tries to help her breathe. I imagine this is also the first time she ever initiates contact with Mirabel, either to dry her tears if she's been crying, to brush her hair away from her face... maybe to hug her? If Mirabel leans in first in search of comfort? I need to see what their relationship looks like at this point in the story, and I'll see that when I get there as I write it. But it's generally a very tender moment in which they slow down and Isabela at least sees past her anger to understand her sister's position. I imagine she apologizes for not realizing she was going too far, to which Mirabel reacts with like, "wtf is an apology" my girl has never been apologized to before 😔😔😔😔😔😔 not to mention this is Big Bad Isabela the Wicked Witch of the Woods, evil gremlin, hates everyone, always mean, nobody likes her. But now she’s suddenly being nice and sweet and gentle?? it reminds her of the Isabela from before her big breakdown, when she was like 16 or 17 and still under Alma’s control, always so sweet and good and perfect for everyone, always happy, always bringing a smile to people’s faces - she doesn’t look happy now, she looks worried, but she’s being very careful with Mirabel in the way she speaks and the words she says, even in the way she touches her when she helps her back to her feet.

Now, it was getting late, so Isabela insists on escorting Mirabel back home, but Mirabel was only there in the treehouse because she snuck out, and if she comes back now, she’ll have to face the family at dinner, and she doesn’t feel alright enough to do that yet. So Isabela is like… “it ok let’s get you something to eat in town”.

So they go eat something, like, idk if they’re eating some bread on a bridge watching the river, away from town, or it’s a food place/inn/restaurant/etc, but if it is the latter, they’re eating on a table outside, where a few people give Isabela a bad look because, again, Big Bad Isabela, but she’s more concerned about her sister’s state. Her hands are trembling a little and she’s clearly still super anxious, looking down and not talking and fidgeting with something, like the cutlery idk, clearly doing better if still not great, she’s coming down from that spike of panic. It’s not like Isabela knows much about connecting with her or comforting her, so the best she comes up with is asking her to tell her about some artistic project she’s working on, to keep her mind distracted. Or like, asking if she likes the food, if she needs more water etc. If she feels okay. Look, Isabela has seen the prophecy, she never intended to get close to Mirabel, but she remembers being 15 and what it was like to be in her current position, and she can’t help but try to be the person she would have needed back then. She’s a bit of a bitch but deep down, she loves her sister, she’s just… in denial about it (in more ways than one :3). And Mirabel is kinda like :0 like this is too good to be true, she didn’t know Isabela had the capacity to be this nice, and it’s making her feel odd in her chest and stomach, like… a tingly warmth whenever she looks at her and asks if she’s still hungry or if she needs more time before they head back home.

Actually, I think Mirabel already had a crush on her before all of this - I’m totally translating her whole Longing and Yearning thing from the movie, but even though Isabela is widely considered as an unpleasant queer-coded villain in town, as she got to know her better, Mirabel came to greatly respect and admire her, because… despite everything, Isabela is independant, brave, strong… she fought so hard to be true to herself and went through hell and back as punishment. I think Mirabel always knew that Isabela being ostracized and mistreated as she is, was always cruel and unfair, but everyone else was just pissed at her all the time so clearly she must have missed something. Deep down though she sees Isabela today, and sees someone she wants to be like: free, true, unbreakable… not to mention her sister is still drop dead gorgeous, like oh my god she feels like she can’t look away. What Isabela misunderstands as judgmental staring is just Mirabel being completely entranced by her natural beauty, and when I mean natural, I mean that she looks beautiful when she’s wearing a comfortable dress and doing what she loves, which is taking care of her plants and painting. No makeup, no pink, no extravagant anything, not even magic - she just looks like she came from a different world, where people live different lives, like she knows a secret everyone else in the family ignores… she’s found the key and set herself free. At the same time, she lost everything, and Mirabel acts outraged and baffled - how could Isabela throw away everything Mirabel has always fought tooth and nail for, in exchange for… a dirty treehouse and some plants??? Clearly, her sister must simply hate everyone, but… God she really did sacrifice everything to get out of the family’s grip, didn’t she? She fought and fought and fought and sacrificed so much that it breaks Mirabel’s heart, even when she still wants to blame her. In reality, she is in awe of Isabela’s strength, and she kinda wishes she could have some of that strength, too, though she wouldn’t admit it to herself quite yet. She also wouldn’t admit that she kinda wished they could get along better, sometimes, because remember: Isabela is supposed to be a Bad Guy, like, she’s harmless, but nobody likes her because she doesn't like anyone… and there is Mirabel, who was already beginning to think there was more to Isabela than she initially believed. And if anything, this turn of event proves her right - and not only that, but having all of Isabela’s attention to herself, and to be seen with so much tenderness and care, perhaps for the first time in her life, is definitely awakening something in her.

Eventually, Isabela has to take her back home, and she grows her a sort of vine ladder to help her get into her room through the window. So they climb up, and Mirabel is inside but Isabela is still standing on the other side, and Mirabel is like, “you’re not coming??” Which baffles Isabela a little because she was planning to go spend the night in her treehouse (as she always does these days, seeing the state of her room). And Mirabel is like “no way” and Isabela is like “??? no way I’m sharing a room with you” because that was Mirabel’s plan, right, this happens like a month or two after Antonio’s gift ceremony, so she has a free bed there, and she realizes that she really, really wants Isabela to stay with her. She’s suddenly holding her hands and not letting go, still a little panicky from earlier, and then Isabela just… cups her face in her hand, says goodnight to her, and makes the vines bring her down so she can retreat back into the forest, leaving a dumbfounded Mirabel behind, still staring forward, eyes wide, mouth agape, blushing, and with her heart beating at 100 miles per hour.

And this is when she’s like “...is this a normal way to feel about your sister?” Is it normal to want to be noticed by her? To continue to be seen? To long for her attention? She’s had a taste now, and to her great surprise, she can’t wait to see her again because... oh wow her sister cares about her?? why does that make her feel so giddy?? And she was so nice and took such good care of her... she was sensitive, considerate, patient, empathetic, selfless... is this what Isabela is like when she doesn't feel under attack?

She doesn’t even say the words “in love” or anything like that in her head, she’s going to be in big denial for a long time before she even admits it to herself, but now it’s a terrifying reality that deep down she KNOWS is true yet she’s doing her damn hardest to run and hide from it :D

And for my 51st post, I give you the greatest news that I FINALLY FINALLY watched Encanto, so...

I watched the Steven Universe animatic for "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and...

This was born.

OK, OK i was inspired and i made my own little crossover. I'll break down why I chose each character:

Steven - Mirabel: Mirabel wants to know the truth about Bruno. Steven wants to learn about Pink Diamond. Both characters ask questions and act on their yearning to know until they get answers they want, and neither are happy when they do get them. There's more, but that's where i will stop and move on.

Ruby and Sapphire - Pepa and Felix: Who better to play a cute, wholesome couple that overcame unfortunate circumstances?

Lapis - Dolores: Pretty close with Steven, and keeps to themselves a lot. Plus, she was the best fit I could think of.

Amethyst - Camilo: Playful jokester who uses their shape shifting powers primarily for the lols. Sounds right.

Pearl - Isabela: The so-called "perfect" character that seems to have it altogether and be the only one who saw something positive (but subconsciously negative) about Pink. She also craves independence, and to do something for herself. And i just had to have her "not a sound out of you" to Mirabel reference her plea for Steven to not ask about Pink AND also offer irony in regards to Pearl's oath.

Peridot - "ISABELA YOUR BOYFRIEND IS HERE": umm.... I ship Lapidot. That's it. Also, i just see Peri walking into this house full of singing people going "wtf are you guys doing"

I don't know who'd Abuela be. 0.0

Miguel and Mirabel are nine years old.

"Falsa madrigals"

"Why do you even stick around?"

As always the two pain twins were getting jumped by bullies. They were down on the floor crunched up and trying to protect anything that might cause a severe injury. Once the bullies left they got up and dusted off their clothes. Mirabel looked over and saw Camilo standing right there staring at them in anger.

"falsa madrigals" he growled and walked away. they were used to this so why did it still hurt? why did it hurt to know that no one besides their parents cared for their well-being? why did it hurt to know that no one cared for CHILDREN?

"c'mon Miguel let's go patch up" Mirabel grabbed Miguel's wrist and walked down into the woods to their makeshift cabin. It wasn't much, it kind of looked like a chicken coop but with aid supplies in it.

They didn't want to disturb their mother for food so they bandage themselves up instead. At first, they thought Dolores would have said something but they lost that hope at seven years old.

<"When will this end?"> Mirabel thought to herself with tears on the brim of her eyes.

"Who knows," Miguel said out loud. They share this twin connection where they know what the other is thinking it's not magic it's just twin magic.

They always have spare clothes in the coop if they ever need something to cover up the scars. Mirabel has a white top with puffy sleeves and Miguel has a longer rauna and a shirt with puffy sleeves.

They tried their best to stay out of the way of their siblings and family. They really did but nothing ever seemed to be enough. Sometimes it felt like the family would seek them out to say something cruel...but they would never do that...right?

It was dinner time for the madrigals and when I say madrigals I mean GIFTED madrigals. Mira and Mig stayed in their rooms and what's sad is the fact nobody even noticed. Not even their parents. The ones who did notice didn't have the courage to say anything or just didn't care.

After dinner was over is when Julieta noticed that she didn't collect their plates.

"where's Mira and...Miguel?" she forgot her own son's name

"their sleeping in their room, they had a long day today" Dolores heard them getting beat up, did she care? no.

"oh" is all she could say, she went back to washing the dishes not having a care in the world.

Casita felt like Dolores knew something but couldn't put a tile on it. it asked the twins what happened today and they told it that they got into a fight and that it doesn't matter. Casita nearly crumbled, it told them that it did matter and frantically asked if they were alright at least 100 times.

Casita didn't want them to go outside ever again in life. When Alma would pull the two near the doors they were always reluctant but they can't disobey the matriarch's words. They would open the doors and pray that their little mariposas would be ok

Nah cuase. If this continues. I’m gonna riot. Ain’t no mf way they should be treating them (and even Casita???? Tf did the house do to deserve this) that way. I will 100 put on my fight shoes and beat all of the up, I don’t care how op their gift is, no one is safe <3

And if I was Casita???? Me personally. I would ‘t let that kind of disrespect slide. But that’s just me though.
