In the dub, this line is “I guess they can’t miss every time”, but the Japanese subtitles are somehow even funnier.

I’ve ironed out all the kinks in my ripping and re-encoding process, and have been getting results that I’m really happy with. Film grain tends to get smushed, which can affect colors in darker scenes, which is unfortunate, but that’s the price to be paid for files that are only 12% as large as the lossless rip. Plus, it still looks infinitely better than the really gnarly macroblocking I used to get with my old method.
On a related note: I suppose it shouldn’t be too big a surprise considering Miyazaki’s the series director, but for a TV anime from 1978, Future Boy Conan looks kind of immaculate. Even past the image quality of the rescan, done at 4k and then downscaled for the blu-ray, the animation is head and shoulders above anything else I’ve seen from the era. The dub is also really well done, which puts GKIDS at 2/2 on new dubs for older releases (the other being Tokyo Godfathers).
