The stinging bite of jealousy settles in Eddie’s chest, curling up like a wild creature behind his ribs. He only hates himself a little for it. Honestly, he shouldn’t even be thinking about who else gets to see Arsen’s* body. Who might call him over for a lap dance or to a private room. Eddie saw what he came for and got his fix. Now he can drive to Athena’s and ignore Bobby’s curious looks while he stress eats his now weekly peach cobbler. He begins pushing his chair away from the table when a familiar voice stops him. “Leaving already, handsome? Here I thought we could play a little longer.” Time feels almost suspended, syrupy and slow as Eddie turns towards the sound. He finds himself eye level with a sparse thatch of hair peeking out from an electric blue waistband. His gaze travels up, up, up to an equally brilliant blue.

That night, after Where the Wild Things Are, The Giving Tree, one too many Five-Minute stories, a cup of water (and a trip to the bathroom), Christopher finally agrees to sleep. Or at least to Eddie kissing him goodnight and leaving the room. He flicks on the planet themed night light before softly closing the door behind him.   His body begs him to stay in the hallway and sag against the wall. To slowly slide to the floor, rest his elbows on his knees and hold his head in his hands. But there’s perfectly chilled beer in the fridge and a Rangers game that should just be starting.  He sprawls on the sofa, one hand cradling the back of his head while the other holds his drink. “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me,” he mutters as soon as the game coverage starts and he remembers the Rangers are playing the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. Because of course they are. Why would it possibly be any other team?

alex/milex and 'a singer must die'

this song from Leonard Cohen is Alex through and through, especially the fact that he uses.... body paint, instead of showing the public his real self. of course, it also reminded me heavily of milex. i will explain in this stupidly long post:

the song is about people who criticise Leonard and his songs, but also his lovers:

"This song is for my critics and for my judges and for those who give marks to us everywhere, who evaluate our performance whether it is in the courtroom or the cloakroom or the bedroom. This is for the judges." -> we also know someone who is severely criticised by the media, right?

the songs starts with:

-> many British people, the 'judges' are bashing Alex for 'forgetting where he comes from' and not being proud anymore of his hometown. they think he's betrayed his people (who he once made proud with his debut album) by 'pretending to be American'

-> another thing that funnily enough, Alex is criticised a lot for, is him wearing sunglasses everywhere; which could be another way of him hiding who he truly is, feeling safer behind a pair of sunglasses. it can also make him braver, knowing that people can't look him straight in the eyes - like this, he might dare to face the judges. but at the same time, it's these sunglasses that he gets bashed for - they're not that useful after all

// whether it's literally sunglasses or body paint - they're a way for him to protect himself, but also a way to hurt himself even more: while he's avoiding the pain of looking the truth in the face, he's facing the pain of having to hide his true feelings and what his heart truly desires

listen, I know I’m not on here a lot but I needed a place to info dump my experience at the Eras Tour so here goes (and many apologies if this isn’t your thing)

OKAY SO I actually live in Arizona (Era-zona) and was stupidly lucky to get tickets to opening night(s) on 3/17 and 3/18; here are my feelings and photos (I guess spoilers if you don’t want to see / hear about the tour) 

my seats on night one were 400 level side stage view so I just vibed and took the majority of my (200+) photos on night 2, where I was sitting in the lower bowl. this is my PSA that if you are going to concerts where you aren’t going to be “at barricade” or front row, invest in a good digital camera. As “good” as iPhones are, nothing will beat a camera with a super-duper zoom, you will leave with photos that look like they were taken from five feet away 

FOR STARTERS, Gayle and Paramore were amazing. I grew up listening to and going to Paramore shows so I was super stoked to see them again IN A STADIUM. Despite what social media might tell you, the crowd was really receptive to Paramore on both nights, and Hayley is a freaking master of the stage 

NOW, MISS TAYLOR put on a THREE HOUR SET and believe me when I say it is a visually stunning, highly produced show. I can’t wait for the BTS to confirm her and her team planned this for years. Her work/effort shows and really cements her place as a PERFORMER in her PRIME. Between the light up bracelets making patterns to specific songs to the light up stage responding to her footsteps to the pre-recorded visuals on the mainstage screen... UGH

an attempt to organize my thoughts / reactions (followed by a photo dump):

the overwhelming realization half-way into cruel summer that I was one of the first (of 70,000 people) to hear it live and would hear so many more newly live songs that evening

THE FACT she had different colored outfits between night one and two made me so excited 

me feeling silly for thinking she’d play different songs from different eras like OF COURSE each era/album gets it’s own mini-set, DUH 

SHOCKED she only played one song off Speak Now (Enchanted)

the songs she chose for evermore? EXCUSE ME? MARJORIE?!! Taylor chose emotional violence by having it on the regular set list; I was speechless 

same for folklore; playing august into illicit affairs? EMOTIONAL DAMAGE

so there’s going to be a ‘surprise song’ played acoustically every night on tour. AWESOME. What does she play night one? MIRRORBALL (we were blessed)

Okay.

So, I'm currently reading Woke Antisemitism by David L. Bernstein and definitely realizing I can't avoid reading about Israel and Zionism if I want to understand anything about this topic on a genuine level. The book is super interesting, and I think it's a great read with a lot of very hot takes that are definitely at times a bit...questionable at first but if you hear him out, the points do make a lot of sense. I'm not talking about the antisemitism points, which I already agreed with. But some of his takes on white privilege, black culture, and feminism are a bit interesting.

One topic does keep coming up in the book, likely because it's very important. While I understand the points that he's making about how anti-Zionism, while not inherently antisemitic (from what I understand, like I said, I still need to do research), is often used as a vehicle for pretty blatant antisemitism on the left. He also talks a lot about how the left allows antisemitism to run rampant because of some of the topics I named above, and I actually agree with him. I can definitely see how an oppressor/oppressed hierarchy leaves out a lot of grey areas that Jews would historically fall into. It's an interesting take, and I'm glad to read it and get closer to understanding a bit about what it must feel and be like to be Jewish today. Obviously, this is only one man's opinion, but I do value every opinion I read because it matters to me that I read about this from every angle that I possibly can so that I am well-informed on how to be a better ally. To add to that, this man isn't just some guy. He's extremely qualified to speak on these issues, not just because he's a Jewish person living in the world today experiencing these issues, but because of his education and experience as well.

In 2016, He was President and CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), Executive Director of The David Project ( from August 2010 to September 2014, and held senior roles with the American Jewish Committee (AJC). During his undergrad at Ohio State studying Philosophy and Jewish studies (he later goes on to get his masters in International Relations), he served on the National Jewish Student Leadership Board and was a huge pro-Israel activist on campus. Just after undergrad, he worked with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington. It goes on an on, and his work has been centrally about progressive values, diversity and inclusion. He has also written tons of articles about antisemitism in the left since at least the 80s, and did a 44 minute interview regarding his book with a talk show.

His book heavily focuses on antizionism being used as a way to be antisemitic in the left, so I'm not even more interested in reading more about this subject than I was before so that I can understand his arguments more critically. I can't really form an opinion on something that I am neither affected by or know very little about, but I can say that his book is an incredibly insightful starting point (so far, I'm only on chapter 5 of 16) for anyone that wants an idea of different things to look into and research independently in order to gain a better understanding of the issues he's discussing (not just Zionism and Israel, but also Jewish life in the United States specifically).

Anyway, online, I found a few videos that explained the Israeli-Palestinian conflict really concisely, but I'd rather read about it a bit more than just depend on a few videos and documentaries on YouTube. I asked my friend about any suggestions she may have, and she told me that Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor by Yossi Klein Halevi was a good one (but warned that it wasn't a great intro book to everything), so I've added it to my list.

With that, here are a few books I found that (tentatively) seem to explain some things. I really want to have a well-rounded view of this subject, so I'm looking for books that discuss Israel and Palestine from all sides of the conflict. In this list, I'll separate Zionist related books from books that have to do with Israel, because from what I understand the two get conflated often even though they aren't interchangeable (as in the terms 'Jew', 'Israeli' and 'Zionist' are not often used today to mean their respective definitions, but rather the same thing, which they are not).

These books are a mixture of like textbook explanations and narrative accounts, since I like to get an idea of both the academic aspect of sensitive issues like this and the personal accounts from real people who are experiencing these things or who believe in specific things.

Notes:

I mostly chose the Short History of Christian Zionism so that I can examine my own bias in regard to Israel. I come from a conservative-lite, Catholic/Baptist, German (and African)-immigrant family, so when I was growing up, the only thing I learned about Israel was that it rightfully belonged to the Jews and was given to them after the Holocaust because of their suffering. My mom really stressed to me as a child and teenager that this was promised land.

That being said, I never learned anything about Palestine, or the conflict. A large portion of this was explained to me when I was like ten. If I did learn anything about Palestine, I think it was usually along the lines of, "Well, some people don't believe that, and they're very mad about it." Very they can stay mad sort of energy.

Now, this was my family's opinion. If I'm being honest, I didn't care one way or the other when this was explained to me as a child. But I did think, since this was the only real contact I had with the subject, that it was nice that Jews got to have Israel after so much suffering, and that they were very deserving of it since the Holocaust was so horrific. So, this was my thinking for many years until, honestly, I think when I got to college and met actual Muslims and Jews. At that point, I was actually incredibly shocked to learn that there was a whole conflict, it wasn't half as simple as it had been explained to me, and that conservative families straight up do not prepare their children for any real world understanding of international relations.

Anyways, so now here I am playing catch up to the rest of the world, per usual.

The title for The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917–2017 by Rashid Khalidi interests me because of the use of the words "settler colonialism." In a quick google search, I found that one argument is that "Jewish Israelis are 'settlers' who want to conquer more and more Palestinian land." I have no idea if this is true, but the term used in the title is a big part of why it's on the list, because you can immediately tell what the author's stance is and how the book may be framed. I chose My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel by Ari Shavit for similar reasons.

As I've said many times, I know very little about this and have no personal opinions about it as a result (meaning that I literally am not neutral, for or against anything rn because I need to do more research. My goal is just to understand rn.), so any titles that I choose are purely because of the reviews, popularity of the books, and/or any possible bias that I can detect naturally rather than from any real understanding of the issue. That's also why I chose a book on Christian Zionism as well, because I'm interested in how Evangelists have affected this issue as well and want to make sure I fully understand the thinking behind what I was taught as a child. Quite a few of the books I've chosen written by Israelis appear to be rather biased as well, so I think I'll be learning a lot historically and politically about this topic in such a way that I'll be able to really understand a lot of it from many different points of view.

I heard Harry believes in karma, and I do too, so I'm just going to say that if it's real, Olivia is definitely going to deal with her side of things once Harry dumps her back in the trash where she belongs and she doesn't have a successful person to leech onto anymore.

Like even if you don't believe in the mirrorball esque energy harboured by the universe, you need to believe in the fact that you're the master of your own fate, and Olivia has sealed her's the moment the greed popped up in her eyes as she saw Harry and decided to use him as an easy climb to temporary fame.

There's only one direction this can go—downhill. Think about it, she's not working hard, she didn't stay professional onset and she doesn't have any actually long term connections in the industry. Plus, she doesn't have a loyal fanbase to back her up for a certain amount of time even if she's not doing well on her projects, like most likeable and well known actors and artists do today.

I really, really hope all her nasty deeds catch up with her eventually. Our man Harry's bigger than ever before, you look away from him for a second and he starts a new successful career, I'm sure he'll be more than fine even if DWD flops. Guess who wouldn't be, Olivia, who's last resort at fixing her irrelevant career is DWD, and she's just made things worse for herself by messing with the wrong man with the wrong fandom. She's overexposed herself which a massive career blunder, is an absolute joke now to the gp who either simply don't take the relationship seriously or can't care less—a loss either way for miss Flamingcock, and a huge fanbase can't stand her and even the so called stupid respectful fans are at the periphery of not even tolerating her any longer.

Hope this C-list actress falls back into irrelevance the second Harry yeets her out of his life and acts like she never existed, would serve her problematic, pathetic ass right.

I really do believe in destiny and how what goes around comes right back around, say the TS and Kanye mess for example. Kanye lied and it was a hopeless time for Tay I would imagine, but karma eventually did deal with it. Because Taylor didn't even do much but Kim K got exposed eventually for lying and Reputation tour was a success like she deserved and she's still rocking to this day and that mess didn't affect her because she wasn't in the wrong then.

I really want something like this to happen to Olivia for the horrid person that she is. Maybe a career setback, maybe someone putting her on blast publicly and exposing something major about her like it was done with Ellen and now everyone's eyes are open and they dislike her. I wouldn't normally manifest something like this on another woman, but her dirty antics need to come to light immediately because it's definitely hurting other people, her careless behaviour with her kids and her sucking the living soul out of Harry.

Hope Jason takes care of her kids and an awful person like her doesn't get to be a bad influence on those young children, honestly, this would otherwise be very unrealistic but Olivia deserves every single bit of it, I don't think I've ever despised another individual this much but she's really gotten me there(along with a lot of other people).,

“Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed,” Taylor Swift posted on social media on Thursday. Normally a meticulous record release strategist, Swift uncharacteristically gave fans just 17 hours to digest the announcement of her eighth effort, Folklore, released just 11 months after her last album, Lover.

The early information provided an intriguing list of collaborators, including indie bigshots Aaron Dessner (a core member of The National, who co-wrote 11 of the record’s 16 tracks) and Bon Iver. Those names, coupled with the bucolic album title, brought with them a suite of preconceptions.

On first listen, Folklore sounds like a National record sped up, glossed with a sheen of reverb and Swift’s self-reflective lyrics that capture a single, fleeting moment. “I thought I saw you at the bus stop, I didn’t though,” she sings on opening track The 1. Strings and piano drench most of the songs, lending an ethereal quality to the record that floats the listener through its 63 minutes. The whole thing feels like a fever dream.

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon steps in on Exile, a rich, textured track that blends two unlikely voices together in glorious harmony. The liberal use of autotune throws back to Vernon’s own Bon Iver, Bon Iver record from 2011 – it’s a strange mirror, as the first Bon Iver album was conceived in the woods after a breakup, and quarantine conditions give this record a similar isolated mythology. The effect is mesmerising, a whole world built in under five minutes. These moments build to climaxes and then die down again, creating a spectrum of sound and emotion across the album as Swift carefully catalogues her pains.

These sidesteps into indie-folk territory don’t stop Folklore from being a pop album and a good one at that – Mirrorball and August slot perfectly into the dream-pop genre, employing shimmering vocal reverb over a comforting aural blanket and Swift’s knack for catchy melodies and perfectly-timed key changes persevere.

Swift has been a master of reinvention across her career, and this album brings together all the threads, as well as adding new ones – Illicit Affairs, with its fingerpicked acoustics and soft horns, the banjo-driven Invisible String and the country-tinged Betty, harmonica and all, hark back to the days when it was just a girl and her guitar. In many ways, the record feels as though Swift is returning to her roots – there’s little trace of the mean-girl energy of 2017’s Reputation, or the sickly bubblegum cringe of Lover’s lead single ME!

There’s a feeling of expectations falling away, too – on Mad Woman, Swift drops the first-ever "f-bomb" in her decade-plus career, suggesting that despite the softness of this album, she’s developing her own steel. As the first album of her 30s, it feels fitting that Swift is putting boundaries firmly in place, both for herself and her audience – she’s more mature and measured than ever.

There’s something beautiful about the fact that this album was germinated, written and produced during a global standstill, and it does feel as though it could only have been made during this slow, reflective time. Swift’s currency has always been emotional honesty, but now it feels less like showmanship and more like a personal reckoning. Folklore is a clear-eyed, subdued affair that reveals a little more magic with each listen.
