Insufficient, Chapter Three

Summary: 9:30 Dragon. The nation of Ferelden is on the brink of war, with the machinations of those with ulterior motives setting the stage for all out conflict as the Blight looms on the edge of the Korcari Wilds.Transported into Thedas, one woman is found by a group of Avvar and brought to their hold, where she is given a chance to live under the name of Heda Snow-Walker. Any plans she had on staying uninvolved with the Fifth Blight, however, are shattered when tragedy strikes, and now her only chance at survival lies within the armies at Ostagar. Too bad she already knows how that will go.

Excerpt: He turned to look at her. “There are those among us who would believe the presence of a lowlander in our hold to be an ill omen. Word already spreads of the ganger’s appearance in the mountains.” Stigandr raised one withered hand, silencing her just as she opened her mouth to speak. “Tell me, Snow-Walker: what do the gods say of these strange times we now live in?”

How in hell was she supposed to answer that? Once, he had come to her to speak with Hope about matters concerning the hold. But he’d never asked her to interpret the will of the gods. She felt like a student being given her final exam at the start of the semester.

“I can’t speak on behalf of the gods,” she said, when it appeared he truly expected an answer from her. “Only myself.”

“Then what say you?”

RULES:

Basics:

Mun is Winter (they/them, 35+). DNI if you’re under 20.

Bucky and Steve are MCU and HC based, with some comics influence. 

Bigots of any stripe will not be tolerated.

I will not follow rp blogs that do not have a statement of the mun’s age and basic tagging.

I love duplicates, and I’m happy to do same muse threads! 

I do not enforce reblog karma strictly, but please be considerate and don’t blast my notifs without ever sending anything.

Writing/interactions/formatting/etc:

I am MUTUALS ONLY for IC interaction!

Thread tracker links are HERE, along with all relevant info.

No major godmodding without discussion. You guys know the deal.

2-5 paragraphs is the sweet spot for me for plotted/continued threads, and sometimes I get on a roll and write novels for people. You don’t have to match my lengths, but don’t give me 3 sentences when I write 3 paras, you feel?

I dislike conversation splicing and will reply in a way to minimize it wherever possible. If we’re writing long threads and you’re unhappy with/don’t understand my style of reply, please talk to me. We might do better with shorter things in that case.

I am picky about child OCs and relatives of my muses, esp when a child OC’s backstory assumes a romantic/sexual relationship my muse had in the past.

I have a tendency to tense switch between past and present. If that’s going to bother you... move along?

Muse =/= mun.

I don’t require formatting or icons for interaction. That’s bullshit. 

Dropping threads happens if I get overwhelmed or overly stressed, and I might not tell you. Relationships developed in said threads remain.

My reply speeds vary greatly, from immediate to months later. You can reply at any speed you want to, but I do archive threads on a semi-regular schedule (see tracker link above for details).

There are a few fcs that I do not like for various reasons, but I will never shame/harass anyone for using a canon fc. I am, however, unlikely to want to interact with the following fcs as OCs or alts: Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, RDJ, Hayley Atwell, Jared Leto, Gal Gadot, Jennifer Lawrence, and probably others.

Messaging/Inbox:

Feel free to send me ooc/character development/positivity/etc and spam my inbox, whether we’re mutuals or not! 

IC asks from your muse are for mutuals only.

Mutuals can feel free to continue asks as long as you move it to a new post (tell me if you genuinely can’t). 

Asks are sometimes deleted for the same reason threads get dropped. It’s not personal! Feel free to send more at any time!

Please don’t send messages like “hi” or “wanna rp?” with nothing else.

Discord is available for mutuals for both ooc and ic. 

I have pretty bad unmedicated ADHD, so I forget ooc conversations are happening sometimes. It’s always helpful (though obvs not required) if people poke me occasionally, esp if I’ve dropped off the face of the earth in our chat.

Shipping/Smut/Etc:

GENERAL: 1) Shipping is one of my favorite things. I am a ship whore, with chemistry. 2) Both muses are bi, and Bucky is not cis. 3) If you are feeling chemistry between your muse and mine, please tell me! If you already know you ship your muse with mine before we even start writing, tell me that too! I can’t promise chemistry, but it gives me a direction to go. 3) If you send me a shippy/smutty meme and we’ve never discussed either, my muse may respond in a way that might not be positive. 4) This blog is pro-selfcest. I’ll always try to remember to tag it with “selfcest tw”.

REGARDING CANON SHIPS: I never do canon ships as they are in canon. 1) The romantic history between Bucky and Natasha as portrayed in the comics is tricky for me, as I don’t believe a brainwashed POW who doesn’t even know who he is is capable of true informed consent. I am open to plotting shared history, though, that may or may not include a past relationship, depending on mun comfort level with each other and with uncomfortable subject matter. 2) For EG related threads, Steve is divergent and did not stay in the past with Peggy. 3) I do not acknowledge Steve and Sharon’s mcu relationship beyond being neighbors/friends, but DO acknowledge their solid comics relationship and am open to shipping them with chemistry. 

AUTOSHIPPING: 1) Steve/Bucky is the only thing I will autoship with muns I don’t know well, but I prefer at least a little ooc chat first. 2) If desired, I will assume Steve/Peggy romantic shipping as far as the context of The First Avenger (they loved each other, but never dated and only kissed once). Beyond that requires writing/discussion and chemistry.

SMUT: I like writing smut, if muses are muns are comfortable with each other and of age, though I will get bored if it’s all we write. Do not expect either muse to be DTF in our first thread, though it may occasionally happen.

Triggers/Tagging/Etc:

Canon-typical violence/blood/etc. will not be tagged. 

I will try to remember to tag nsfw, and for other triggers as “trigger tw”. Message me if I’m missing something I need to tag.

This blog is SALTY regarding the ending of Endgame. I will tag “anti endgame” and “endgame salt” when I feel like bitching about it.

2017 Louden Swain SPN Mini Bang

Last year, we had such a great time with the Louden Swain Writing Challenge (which turned into a mini bang) and the band LOVED seeing the results so we’re going to do it again! (Please be gentle with me as host, as this is my first time being involved with any kind of bang, much less hosting one.)

Let’s show Rob and the band some love by letting their songs inspire us!

I’m looking for BOTH writers and artists for this! Last year, we had art for every story (thanks to hours and hours of work by @leatherwhiskeycoffeeplaid ) and I’d love to do the same this year. Whether you’re drawing or making aesthetics or doing something else, WE WANT YOU. All art and stories will be put together, printed, put in a snazzy binder, and presented to the band at ChiCon!

Here are the rules:

Deadline for everything is June 30th. I will need time to put everything together, print it out, and assemble it. NO LATE ENTRIES! Last year I only gave myself a week, and I was still sorting through everything Friday night after karaoke. I’m not going to make a deadline to sign up, but if you sign up the week before the end, you will only have a week to complete your part.

Artists: - You will be expected to work with writers so the art reflects the story. Whether you pick a song you like and get together with the writer, or pick a writer you like and get together on a song, it doesn’t matter to me.  - If you’d like me to pair you with a writer, let me know, and I will match you up with someone. - When you’re making your art, keep in mind that it will be pasted into a Word document, printed on letter-sized paper, and put into a sheet protector in a binder. You might want to print out what you make to see how it looks on the page.  - You can post your art in your own post and tag me and #2017 Louden Swain SPN Mini Bang or submit it to me through my blog or send it to me via carrier pigeon (please don’t send it via carrier pigeon, I have cats) or drop me a line and I’ll give you an email address to send it to. - I will need cover art! Last year’s cover was beautifully drawn by @vyles-ray as a favor to me when I freaked out about needing a cover. If you have an idea for cover art, let me know, and we can talk!

Writers: - Can be any pairing or ship, reader-insert or OC, or even no pairing, whatever floats your boat. Please no RPF.  - Please no smut. Anything else is up for grabs. Or maybe just a headcanon kind of thing. - Pick a song and SEND ME AN ASK with the song you have picked to sign up. I will update this post with the songs taken. Songs will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis. - You can’t write for the same song you wrote about last year. This is to ensure variety in the stories from year to year. - Tag me in your fic, plus use the tag #2017 Louden Swain SPN Mini Bang. You can also submit your fic to me through my blog, or send me a message and we can discuss the pigeon and email options. (Really prefer no pigeons.) - You must use a Keep Reading feature if your fic is posted to Tumblr and over 500 words. - Your fic can either be a story based on the song or just have it somehow highlight the song. Since Rob will get to read these, I’d rather the fics be more relevant than just a song playing on the radio in the background, but do what you can. - Your fic can also be a part of another challenge, BUT make your fic relevant to the song you choose, please! (Basically, please do more for this challenge than having a Louden Swain song playing in the background.) - If I haven’t liked or reblogged your post within a couple days, let me know I missed it!

I have been convinced to add audio/video submissions to the project! What I will do is link them to the masterpost for the whole project, and dedicate a page in the book directing the readers to the masterpost to find links to the other submissions. (I’ll list the submissions, too, with whatever description you’d like me to add, so it won’t just be a throwaway line, it will be clear how many videos, etc are there to be seen.)

Excerpt:“It gets easier after this.” Ragna’s voice broke through Heda’s shyness to pull her gaze back to the huntress. “The first time I left, I feared I would never return.”

“But you did return.”

“Aye, that I did,” Ragna looked ahead, to something in the distance. Heda wondered if she looked towards someone ahead of them in the caravan line, or something less physical. “Never forget, kinsman: just as the falcon can always find its way back to the nest, we Avvar can always find their way home.”

Heda huffed out a laugh.“Too bad I’m not Avvar, then,” she muttered.

Worldbuilding Wednesday

I’m going to use this as an excuse to worldbuild for an idea that’s been floating in my head. Thanks go to the lovely people at @a-productive-manor for the questions!

Today, let’s explore a bit of the Free Marcher city of Hasmal, shall we?

1. In your story, what is the single most important natural resource? How is it obtained? What is it used for? How prominent is it in your narrative?

The Free Marches are considered the breadbasket of Thedas. As such, Hasmal has several natural resources, such as water from the Minanter River, fertile soil, and even a few mineral deposits along the outer reaches of the city’s territories.   

However, the most important resource is people. Thanks to being situated near the border of Tevinter, Hasmal is usually the first stop for refugees from the magister-ruled nation. There is a great deal of business in moving desperate people trying to escape slavery and other such unpleasant things. It is that sort of business that plays into my story. 

2. Is there magic? Where does it come from, and what are its range and costs? What impacts does it have on your story and characters?

Considering this is Thedas, of course there’s magic in Hasmal. It shares the neighboring Tantervale’s approach to magic, which is to say that it is tightly regulated by templars and the city guard alike. 

While many characters are not mages themselves, several have personal histories that have been shaped by magic and mages alike. This is part of the driving force behind the story.  

5. Are there non-human sentient beings? If so, what are their biologies and physical appearances? What makes them distinct? Do these distinctions matter socially?

Elves are a large group within the population, particularly since many of them would be on the run from Tevinter. There are also a few dwarves. Qunari usually do not make it this far into the Marches, though there have been a few spotted in recent years. 

Socially, these races are pretty much treated like they are elsewhere. Elves in particular aren’t trusted by many, because they often bring trouble.

6. Languages! Is your world monolingual or multilingual?  Is there a lingua franca, and if so, whose is it? Is there language loss? How does language (and communication more broadly) come to play into your story?

The Trade Tongue (otherwise known as Common) is the most common, but Nevarran, Orlesian, and Tevene also have appearances in local dialogue. 

Language is important in that it is dangerously easy to be taken advantage of by unsavory groups if you are not familiar with Common. Even more important, however, is being able to read between the lines and gauge what others’ intentions are. If you guess wrong, your life could be on the line.

10. Religion & Divinity. What religious beliefs and practices exist in your story? What are their tenets? What role do their play in the narrative?

As mentioned before, Hasmal shares similarities with Tantervale in how the Chantry is involved. Which is to say that it has a great deal of control. Chantry law here is absolute. Even if you are not one who worships the Maker or Andraste, you must follow their rules or face the consequences.

They had barely stepped past the threshold of their cabin before Thorvard was upon them, the large man looking more nervous than Heda had ever seen him.

Sparing her only the briefest of glances, he told Tova, “Come. Our Thane wishes to speak with the hunters.”

“Now?” Tova frowned. “Did something happen?”

His eyes darted back to Heda, who eased behind her companion in response. “I do not know for certain.  Thora told me to collect the hunters, so I am here following orders. As you should be.”

Well, someone was feeling pissy.

She broke through the water’s surface with a loud gasp. Each breath she took was better than the last, but there was no time to appreciate it. She could feel her body already start numbing itself against the frigid waters of the Sea of Ghosts. If she wasn’t careful, she would be joining the sea’s denizens in the afterlife.

Most of what remained of the cabin was flooded. She thought fleetingly of her things--of her dagger and that satchel of gold she had earned after a dice game in Rihad--before she pushed herself to swim towards the opening ahead.

Up and over she went, and suddenly she found herself sitting on the ceiling of what had once been one of the ship’s corridors. Everything about it had her brain screaming of the inherent wrongness of it all. She stumbled forward, her soaked clothes weighing her down more than they protected.

It didn’t take long before she found more water blocking her path. The idea of going back into the water was terrifying, but what choice did she have? Either stay here and freeze or go back in for a slim chance of finding help.

She went back in.

Six Sentence Sunday

Slowly working on the next chapter to Insufficient. And yeah, it’s more than six sentences, but context is important. :P

Sighing, she dropped onto her cot and let the stress of the day slough off her.

The voice was gentle, reassuring. A warm feeling washed over her, soothing the aches of her body that had not fully healed from her ordeal in the wilderness.

I think you mean I sucked. Her eyes drifted towards the fire, the flames dancing happily around the fuel she had tossed on it. Stig had to correct me so many times.

How in hell was she supposed to answer that? He had come to her before, wanting to speak with Hope, but never had he simply asked her to interpret the will of the gods. She felt like a student being given her final exam at the start of term. 

“I cannot speak on behalf of the gods,” she said, when it appeared he truly expected an answer. “Only myself. And I think that we should remain vigilant, lest we find ourselves victims to the whims of fate.”

Excerpt:

After months of sleeping in tents, it’s a novel thing to be able to look forward to sleeping in an actual bed for once. Not that Bekah’s had time to think about sleep, what with all of the celebrations taking place.

As it turns out, if you help save the country from being invaded by darkspawn, people will want to invite you to all of their celebrations. Who knew?

It’s hard to say no, and not just because it’s easy to guilt her into doing something if the right buttons are pushed. After everything that’s happened, it seems almost disrespectful to turn down someone’s offer of free drinks and taking part in the revelry. So she goes out with her companions and enjoys the hospitality that only Ferelden can offer.

The next morning begins by sleeping in late. To be able to do so is a luxury, one that Bekah is only all too happy to indulge in. Her dreams are no longer plagued by memories of dragon’s fire raining from the sky, of the oppressive weight of being miles underground. Instead, she dreams of the future, of all of the possibilities that are now open to her. It’s addicting.

There are only a handful of servants in the kitchens by the time she leaves her chambers. Breakfast has long since come and gone; now they make preparations for the arl’s evening meal, the first proper one since the archdemon was slain. She wonders what sort of strings Tegan had to pull to get the food she sees laid out on the table, but figures it’s better not to ask.

Waving at the servants in greeting, Bekah goes to a part of the kitchen where she won’t be in the way of their work. There’s sure to be something around that she can cobble a meal from. Finding some bread and cheese in good supply, she nabs a loaf and wedge before grabbing a plate and adding some cured meat to it. Figuring that is a reasonable bounty for now, she turns to retreat back to her room…

...and finds Zevran watching her from near the door.

And following other people’s headcanons about the DAO timeline threw a small wrench into my original plan, before I realized I was being dumb and shifted my timeline a little and that somehow made it work better.
