Petra Arkanian SHC Sorting
I'm sorting Petra from the Ender's Shadow series. I'm going to be focusing primarily on Shadow of the Hegemon, since it's the only book that's partly from Petra's perspective, and it does a lot to define her as a character. A basic explanation of the system that I'm using by @wisteria-lodge can be found here. Ender's already been sorted as a Badger Snake, and Bean as a rare non-villainous example of a Snake Bird, I believe.
Petra's a Snake Lion, which would be really obvious if I were taking the end of Shadow of the Hegemon into account, where she confesses to having a crush on both Bean and Ender despite there not being any evidence of that before that scene. And then her sole motivation for the rest of the series is to…have babies with Bean? I'm just going to chalk that up to Orson Scott Card's Mormonism. The belief that the purpose of life is to have kids is a core tenet of the series, for some reason. As such, I'm looking at everything before that scene, because I think that's the "real" Petra.
Petra's one of the most obvious Lion secondaries that I've ever seen, which is really surprising for a series that's inundated with sexism that started in the 1980s. She's not interested in competition because she just assumes that she's going to win no matter what, and the popular girls at school dropped her from their group for being too outspoken and blunt. She tells someone with a gun to just go ahead and kill her to call their bluff. She stayed in solitary confinement for five weeks when everyone else only lasted a week, and she despairs a lot about "not being able to shut up" (but only when it gets her in trouble). She considered killing the villain twice, and the only reason that she didn't was because it would kill her, too, and because Bean told her not to. She agreed with someone who described her as a "bossy, nosy introvert who likes to piss people off".
I thought that she was a Badger Lion at first, because she thinks about groups all the time. Petra failed her group when she fell asleep in battle, which weighs on her pretty heavily (I assume that falling asleep in battle means one of those uncontrollable mini-blackouts that people get after not sleeping for three days). She feels guilty about an uncontrollable biological mechanism, because she was the one who broke first. She focuses a lot about how the group feels about it, saying that the "others who had fought with her knew it" and that "she was not reliable, they did not trust her, and she did not trust herself." She keeps falling asleep during battle a secret from her country of Armenia, her family, the press, and the military because "Armenia needed a hero".
However, she doesn't care about some groups at all. When the popular girls and the nerds get sick of hanging out with her after a few weeks, she doesn't care. She says that "all the friendships here, all the social concerns seemed so trivial to her." This could be a product of her Lion secondary discouraging her from pretending to be someone that she's not, but the scene seemed really non-Loyalist when I read it for the first time.
She finds her group among the rebels and the misfits, where she feels like she belongs. She talks a lot about feeling like an outcast, and feeling a kinship with them. She always makes "a point of speaking to new kids who were getting the pariah treatment, since she knew they needed friends". It could just be an issue of Petra wanting to control her friendships through a Snake's vetting process, or she could be a Badger who dehumanizes everyone who hasn't experienced war and hardship as an "other", like how real-life military veterans do, because civilians can't understand what they've gone through.
She needs other people to function. Even though she got through five weeks of solitary confinement through sheer willpower, she slowly loses herself in the process. She thinks about how people are like machines with levers, and "if you just cut them off from the network of people who give shape to their personality, the communities that form their identity, they'll be reduced to that set of levers." This is true for anyone; humans are social animals, and isolation has been shown to cause massive psychological problems that are sometimes permanent. It would be especially hard for a Loyalist, though, and it causes Petra to break down. Even though she's a Snake, I believe that she has a Badger Primary model, and it burns here (despite it already being Exploded). She "just went along, becoming the machine they wanted her to be, pretending to herself that by only pretending to be a machine, she wouldn't actually become one, but knowing at the same time that whatever people pretend to be, they become." That's a long-winded way of saying that she doesn't believe that she has an identity anymore, hence her Badger primary model being exploded.
When a group of people try to rescue her, Petra doesn't want to put them in danger. She shows a distrust of people and even demands for them to let her out of the van so that she could take her chances alone, which could either be not wanting innocent people to die or a suspicion of people. This points to her Badger primary model being burned.
She talks about being selfish a lot, probably because she's a Loyalist. When she doesn't want to kill the villain alongside herself because she doesn't want to die, she calls herself a "selfish coward" when it's just self-preservation? When the villain lies about Bean's death, she immediately thinks about how her chances of escaping are nonexistent and feels guilty for thinking about herself.
Despite thinking about groups all the time, she's incredibly devoted to specific people. Bean's messages to her kept her hope alive, because it was proof that she had not been forgotten. She had someone who cared for her enough to not give up on her, and she repays his loyalty in kind.
She has a few models that she plays around with, like a Snake secondary model. She flatters her enemies about how strong and powerful they are a lot, and she faked a mental breakdown to get out of solitary. She kissed the villain so that he wouldn't kill her, even though she didn't have feelings for him. All of that is vaguely sexist, or at least Petra using the fact that other people view her as stereotypically feminine just because she's a girl to her advantage, but like I said before, Orson Scott Card's pretty sexist. She has a secondary Bird model, using Actor Bird specifically when she gets kidnapped, pretending that she's a character out of a spy movie. She uses her Bird secondary model a lot to analyze situations before she acts. She is a tactical genuis, after all. Bean says that "even Petra could keep her mouth shut if every time she spoke up it cut her off from more and more information and opportunities." Obviously it's not her preferred way to act, but it's an option in her arsenal.

Would you ever write a sci-fi AU of lost souls?
It’s honestly just Karlach with a big ass gun for me, but could you imagine Astarion—
Oh, so I've never considered this and I kind of love it. I have pondered a modern AU, and a far off into the future fic looking at how Astarion fares in a contemporary world long after all of his friends/family have died. My conclusion is that the man has learned how to use a gun - and is a good shot, but laments that the days of daggers in a large fight are over. He prefers killing up close, and I'll bet he gets a TON of side eye when he's like, "I used to be able to watch the life leave people's eyes as I buried my blades into their guts" because he's still a little feral, even hundreds of years later.
So, sci-fi AU? We'll have sharpshooter Astarion (who gets stabby whenever he possibly can because see above). Petra is a lounge singer in a dive bar on a space station singing for room and board. Karlach is a bad ass with a big gun, because of course she is. Something happens to get the Tadpole gang together (space tadpoles? Sure!), and Petra somehow winds up the leader of this crew of misfits. Astarion steals them a ship and they take off in search of a cure for their alien infection.
Antics include: A space chase because Astarion accidentally stole a police ship (the man cannot plan his way out of a paper bag), Gale getting them out of trouble with a well-placed bribe after Wyll name drops his dad because in this universe, fancy magic types make good credits, legitimate concern that Karlach will burn a hole through the hull and they'll all wind up spaced, and Petra whining that it's tough to dye one's hair purple when your timed shower is only 3 minutes.
Astarion recognizes Petra's hardship, but everyone else thinks she's being a princess.

LeFou Deux Headcanons;
Lefou Deux and La Foux Doux are separate people and brothers. Lefou Deux is the older of the two.
He is the son of Lefou, Stanley, and Paulette.
He is the older brother of Petra, La Foux Doux, Felicity, Fleur, and Sylvie. And the little brother of Lilette Leprince.
He is the older cousin of Gil, Claire (Purple pirate girl), Gemma, Curtis, and Cat.
His last name is Beaumont-Leprince.
He's the younger cousin of the Gaston Twins.
He is two years older than the main aks and vks. A year younger than the Gaston twins and a year older than his girlfriend, Claudine.
He's had a crush on Claudine Frollo ever since he was in the 1st grade after he saw her in the market.
He's been writing her silly little poems ever since.
Lefou Deux is one of the only people not afraid of Claudine's rats and builds them tiny furniture so they're all comfortable.
He's Harriet's 2nd mate.
He works with Harriet at Hook's inlet more ever since Clay and Rick got banned.
He also works at Gaston's pub and Gaston's 'Duels without Rules'.
He is a hardworking big brother who does his best to help support his family while still being stuck under Gaston's thumb.
Lefou Deux goes by Lee, L.D, and the fool. Mainly Lee.
Lee fights with a pitchfork as well as a bow and arrow—he's an excellent shot.
He's a poet, a toy maker, and an inventor who records everything in his journal alongside Sammy.
He loves sailing, farming, gardening, and reading as well as French food.
He also loves looking at the old pictures his friends have collected and dancing.
He makes and fixes toys for the isle kids free of charge, and has no problem fixing things for the ones he loves.
His friends all use to joke he was a long lost elf back when they still believed in Santa.
Speaking of which, when Lee got a little older (about 8) he started handing out gifts to all the children and some of the adults on the isle-- pretending to be Santa. Because of this, some people of the isle still believe in Santa.
No one other than Sammy, who helps him do it, knows that it is him doing it.
He goes to open poetry night in Auardon.
He wears handkerchiefs alot and is deathly clumsy.
Lee has honestly tripped off the pier more times than he can count. Usually to be saved by Rick.
His cousins, the Gaston twins, found out that he was the one leaving Claudine poems and have teased him ever since.
Lee joined Gil's rat trapping club as a kid so he wouldn't feel too sad when no one joined it.
His favorite thing about Gil and Claudine is that they always manage to brighten whatever room they're in.
Lee had to drop out of school to escape Gaston's wraith and has to hide when he's reading so he doesn't get punished when caught.
He still misses Gastons 4-9, Curtis, Lilette, and Petra dearly after their deaths.
His favorite songs are 'Santa Claus is coming to town', 'Wellerman Sea Shanty' by 220 KID x Billen Ted, and 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables'.
He and Claudine's song is 'She's got you high'.
Lee's favorite books are 'WIZARDS TOME I- L'INITIATION' by LUMEN and 'Dangerous Liaisons' by Choderlos de Laclos.
His favorite movie is 'Les Misérables'.
His favorite TV show is '1941, Vivre ses Choir UN VILLIAGE FRANÇAIS'.
His favorite musical is Hamilton.
He can't play an instrument to save his life.
When he was little, he was obsessed with the movie 'Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer'. Mainly the misfit toys.
Infact, most of his toys growing up were toys his parents made for him. Based on those exact same toys.
He loves them and still has them. Especially the little boat that can't stay afloat.
His favorite colors are red, blue, and brown.
Lee always felt bad for the Misfit toys and related to them. He even wrote poems about them.

An Alternative to the Studio System?: Indie Animation Forges Ahead [Part 2]

Otherwise, Shannon Mowatt's 16-minute animatic of Revamped, has been released in advance of the full animated pilot. It is an upcoming short queer film about four high school sophomores who deal with school life, vampires, and the supernatural world.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the eleventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on July 15, 2022.
There's the Lackadaisy film about 1920s gangster cats, based on Tracy J. Butler's webcomic. Another series, Outcasts, has cats as characters. Shou Tuzi's Tallyho! series continues to develop. It is inspired by steampunk, fantastique, and other media. Tuzi's studio, Skull Hare Studio, is also working on Arthur: The Timeless Knight.
Daniel is continuing to pursue his action adventure series, Lumeon Lands, which has begin production. These series are important to highlight when Hollywood continues to end projects and sack animators. Some have put hope in indie animation, noting it has the promise to allow creators to have "creative control" unlike working under major studios.
While there are many indie animations I could mention. [6] However, I'd like to focus on a few series in development. One of those is Sam Sawyer's SALEM, also known as Salem or S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters. In May, SpectroliteAAA, the lead storyboard artist said that she could talk about it soon, but not yet. In January, Sawyer, when asked by a fan, said the same thing.
The series has been fully funded. The now-fulfilled Kickstarter defines the series as an animated story about "a cryptid with a big heart and even bigger questions, on a quest to discover their true origins".
Apart from having high-profile voice actors like Laura Bailey, Rob Paulsen, and Adam McAarthur, a tweet from the show's account confirmed Petra as asexual, Salem (who is also non-binary) as pansexual, and Oliver as gay. The series has Randy Abrams as executive producer. It is being animated with help from Surfer Jack Productions, a company said to specialize in "ingenious storytelling". The company was founded by animation industry veterans Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, Lance LeCompte, and Bernie Petterson.
There are other series in development. This includes Georden Whitman's pilot named Port by the Sea on two kids who are "sailing the seas to fix a now broken moon", Matt Acuña's fantastical adventure The Garden Age, and the Far-Fetched Show, an animated series "about a rock band of misfits" by Ashley Nichols and Dave Capdevielle.
In addition, there's a demon/vampire themed series in the process entitled Bloodgore, the psychological horror dramedy named Please Stay Tuned, the ghost-themed Ghost Hunt, a sci-fi themed SpaceAges, and many more. These are a small sampling of the indie animated series out there. [7] These persist despite the problem of distribution and funding to "make original stuff", and possible iffiness of crowdsourcing, as writer Chris Hill pointed out.

Port by the Sea's pilot will likely come out sometime later this year. The Far-Fetched Show is also moving ahead, with comics to go with the series like Wild Card. The Nichols' Patreon notes that a lyrics video for the series band, Sesemoid, is coming out later this year. This also noted they are still working on the pilot. Currently, there is wonderful fan art of the show's characters, including putting them in a Steven Universe setting, and much more.
The fact that Port by the Sea has over 1400 followers and Far-Fetched Show has over 67,600 followers, along with 406 Patreons of Nichols, proves what animator LanceArts pointed out: that the indie animation scene is "exploding with greater popularity now more than ever."
More episodes of Alpha Betas are currently in production, with recording for new episodes. Four episodes are set to be released in Fall/Winter 2022. Additionally, Lucha Vandross is fundraising for various indie animated series. This includes those inspired by 1980s Hong Kong films (Project Icarus and Project Icarus X) and a modern take on Robin Hood. The latter is about friends "robbing the rich and giving it to the poor" (Samson). [8] Animator 9Hammer is actively releasing series in Newgrounds, of all places. This includes series such as Chaotic Heart and Solace, with new episodes in production.
Others, like Warlord-of-Noodles, have ongoing series as well, which is also posted on YouTube and has a Patreon. Series like Deep States, by Molly, are on YouTube. There is the exciting 2d indie anime in development entitled Broken Beat, made by animators of prominent anime series, like Creative Theory. The series is about a protagonist, Sin, tasked with stopping the reign of the creator god, and challenged by an "endless conflict between humans and manifestors". Sin masters his form along the way.
Newgrounds is a weird place. There's a lot of terrible (and amateurish content) there, mixed with sexual content. It is more than what would YouTube would permit, and includes pornographic material. Apart from the series on hiatus by 9Hammer, Beyond the Fog, there's The Looter, and Zack and Alex. The latter, by Jayevin Abad, had its pilot posted on YouTube as well. Otherwise, there are various other series, films, and more, which have aired on the site. [9] Some shows I've noted before in this post, and elsewhere, like Ollie and Scoops, Eddsworld, Tales of Alethrion, and Satina all have pages on the site.
Apart from Newgrounds, are further series in development. This includes The Art Of Murder, produced by an Australian indie 2D animation studio named Choc Chip. It is produced by Anokhi Somaia and directed by Nirali Somaia. Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli are the series composers.
The Art of Murder is a murder mystery, musical, and pop culture parody where "sketchbook characters come to life" when the clock strikes midnight. It features voice actors like Lizzie Freeman, who also voices a character in Gods' School, Lauren Lopez, who founded a popular online musical theatre company named Team Starkid. There's also Joey Richter (part of the same theatre company), Joey Bizinger, a well-known Japanese-Australian voice actor, YouTuber, and more, and Megan Lee, a Korean-American singer-songwriter.
There's further projects of note. This includes various series by LGBTQ creators. [10] For instance, there's an animated series such as Scrappers, Swift Spark and the Defense Five, Birdboys, and Novas. Scrappers and Birdboys are by trans women, Charlie Gultiano-Wyton and Danielle Maxine specifically. Swift Spark and the Defense Five is by a trans man, Pan. Novas is by a queer and trans artist, Jesse. Scrappers is being produced by Gultiano-Wyton's animation studio, Variation Media.
Swift Spark and the Defense Five is by artist and animator, Pan, who loves Phineas & Ferb, and is based on a comic of the same name. Birdboys is by artist and animator, Danielle, with some teasers posted on her YouTube channel. Novas is the personal project of Jesse, a SCAD student, who posted a casting call for the animation on Tik Tok. What Avara, mentioned earlier in this article, stated is relevant here: support for indie creators is necessary if you "want to see diversity in animation". Part of that is LGBTQ representation.

Let's start with miss sunshine, aka, Irisa: Yes, there actually is one character I wish to see pop up again: Levi. The Levi's I have interacted in the past with, had such chemistry with her. It was insane. It was not per se in a shippy way, but my god, the paragraphs I have written for her and other Levi's.
For Levi, I wish to see a few: Erwin and Petra. Petra did not make it past season one, but fucking hell I loved her. My Levi has been pining after her for years now, and it is god-damn heartbreaking to see. As for Erwin… Erwin was someone important to Levi, and he had sworn fealty to him. So, yeah… ouch.
For Silco: Mel Medarda. The mindfuckery of these two would be out of this world. I want to see how two opposite worlds come together, only to tear each other apart through wits and manipulation. These two would set the world on fire, just out of spite for one another. Silco would make it his personal goal to tear her down from the inside out, as slowly and as bloody as he can. Will it end in death? That entirely depends on her.

You two, I have an emergency. Well, two emergencies. First, I think I saw Sasha and Connie going in our food crates a while ago. And then I think I saw Jean follow them... Second, Mikasa here needs help with winning Eren's heart.
Mikasa: (blushing intensely) No, I didn't! How many times do I have to tell you, we're just family!
You're blushing, so that means you're lying. Petra, you must know what it takes to woo a man. And Levi... Well, actually, I don't know how you'd help in this department, but what the hell?
Mikasa: I swear, I'll f***ing kill you when you least expect it-
Levi pauses, his tea cup pressed to his lips. Grey-blue eyes narrow into slits and an angry exhale tumbles from his throat. "Those fucking brats," he growls. His eyes narrow at the anon. "How long ago is a while? You only just telling someone now?" He folds his arms. "Sounds like a diversion tactic to me."
He eyes Mikasa after a moment. "Go and check the kitchens once you're done here."
Petra chuckles. "That Sasha really is something."
"A selfish brat is what she is," Levi grumbles.
"When it comes to food." Petra corrects him.
The pair of them watch the exchange between Mikasa and the anon. Levi continues drinking tea although his expression grows steadily more annoyed, his eyes full on glaring at anon after the crack about his romantic advice capabilities. "I'm not sure what help you're capable of being other than the department of meddling in someone else's love life, so I guess that makes two misfits in this situation."
Petra frowns at the anon. "Maybe she's blushing because you're making her uncomfortable. What Mikasa's feelings are are here business? Why does it matter so much to you? Is this just you fishing for gossip?" She then looks to Mikasa with a smile. "Whatever your feelings for Eren are, I'm sure you know better than anyone else and if you don't, you'll figure them out."
