I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.

This is something out of a horror film.
She’s just been staying at an isolated castle with only a droid for company for how long now?
Strong Miss Havishman vibes.

Hi! You mentioned in one of your responses to a question about your opinion on the new bbs adaptation that you have an edition of the book with additions in the form of Dickens work notes. About little Pip being 7 years old and so on. And I was wondering if there was anything else interesting in there? Maybe more information about Estella, Joe.
Especially about Herbert.
Basically, anything that you personally found curious
hello (and thanks for your patience)! I'd love to share more! 💖 for those curious, my copy of great expectations is the oxford world's classics edition with introduction and annotations by robert douglas-fairhurst. it's not a fancy or expensive edition at all - I bought it at a bookshop while on holiday several years ago and the extra material inside was a nice surprise! you can get it in paperback on amazon for like £5.99. the annotations throughout are also very good
dickens' notes include: the original ending that got changed before publication, some notes on timelines and character ages, a brief outline of the final chapters of the story, and research on tidal activity for magwitch's escape. I'll include screenshots of the ebook pages under the cut because it's all very interesting, but my favourite tidbits are:
pip, herbert and estella are all around 23 at the climax of the story. so young! and all the same age! 🥹
miss havisham was 56 at her death, about 40 when pip first met her, and 26 or 27 when compeyson jilted her.
joe is 45 at the end of the story, which makes him only around 29 at the beginning! not sure why that got to me so much haha. these characters are a lot younger than I expected to have such grim things happening to them
dickens keeps calling compeyson comp or compey. L + ratio + you fell off (the boat) + the author can't be bothered writing your full name as he brainstorms your villain origin story
as a writer, I adore reading the working notes because you can so clearly see his thought process in action. writers have not changed at all! he was messy, he underlined things and crossed things out, he was not immune to frantically trying to figure out everyone's ages 2/3 of the way through the story and putting too much thought into local tidal patterns that no average reader was going to notice or care about. rip charles dickens you would have loved writeblr memes
seriously the disjointed nature and the sheer humanity of his working notes bring me so much joy. nobody's initial brainstorm is a masterpiece!

I also love that he did the thing where he thought of a great line early in brainstorming, knew it was gold, and didn't want to forget it. so in the middle of these brief notes you get a full sentence that appears in the final manuscript with only a little alteration
Tumblr media
It was the only good thing I had done, and the only completed thing I had done, since I was first apprised of my great expectations.
and finally: 🥺

“I’ll tell you,” said she, in the same hurried passionate whisper, “what real love is. It is blind devotion, unquestioning self-humiliation, utter submission, trust and belief against yourself and against the whole world, giving up your whole heart and soul to the smiter—as I did!”
