Naruto AU where instead of Sasuke leaving due to Itachi, he resolves to be Itach’s opposite and ends up devoted to Konoha.
Instead, Naruto AND Sakura leave, Naruto because 1) He hates how he’s being treated and 2) he’s heard something about an Uzumaki cousin or two that are working for a change.
Sakura because 1) I see so many “Naruto leaves” or “Sakura leaves” AUs but rarely just those two without Sasuke and 2) She’s resolved to get stronger, stronger than what Konoha can make her and she’s accepted Sasuke’s rejection. So now she’s going to follow a friend who didn’t reject her, who also wants to be stronger, and she’s going to make a name for herself as more than a faceless civilian born shinobi.

I have such a fear of finding another like myself, and such a desire to find one! I am so utterly lonely, but I also have such a fear that my isolation be broken through, and I no longer be the head and ruler of my universe.

on itasaku: there is some interesting meta to be made about sakura's apparent need to fix sasuke people emotionally and also her world-class ability to fix them physically. but mostly what i like is the idea of her being extremely I CAN FIX HIM about itachi and then she does get to fix him!! physically. and it took so much work she forgot along the way all the problems with his personality and insane worldview which no force on earth is fixing. and also itachi agrees with her
sakura: I FIXED HIM
itachi: she did. she fixed me.
sakura: WITH MY LOVE
itachi: with her love. and also her highly impressive jutsu

Neglect..

Neglected... TO POST THIS HOLY SHIT.
Sorry I've been super inactive, life has repeatedly kicked me in the ass, and more than half of those times, it was really me kicking my own ass. BUT I'm here now with some more Missing Nin content. It isn't a whole lot, just a little sketch I did to get back into the swing of things, but I've noticed that people as of late have been kinda drawn to this au, so I thought it'd fuel the fire a little. I hope you guys enjoy!!
(What? Obito manipulating Rin so that she believes that Minato and Kushina don't have her and the villages' best interest in mind? So that Obito can play the knight in shining armor? Yeah, this will go over well..)

So Kisame's often considered the fourth most powerful Akatsuki member, but the top three are pretty unanimously Obito, Pain and Itachi. And with Kisame's motto being survival of the fittest and MO being taking out the weakest links, it’s fascinating to see him end up as one of the most well connected members of the Akatsuki. And since the top three never openly get to clash, technically speaking, he stays loyal to all of them. He's;
- Working broadly for Pain, Akatsuki's open leader, who wants to create peace through traumatising the world through a cycle of war
- Working secretly for Obito, Akatsuki's real leader (and by proxy, Madara and Zetsu, Akatsuki's real-real leaders), who wants to create peace through trapping the world in a dream realm
- Working day-to-day for/with Itachi, the Akatsuki's biggest name, most powerful field member, and a secret double agent, who wants to create peace through becoming the most powerful shinobi that's ever lived,  and through using that power 'as much as he wants', 'lead the world to subjugation'
So either Kisame is the ninja equivalent of the minions, or the dojutsu wielding top three of the Akatsuki all looked to him and went 'yup, he's Henchman Shaped'

I have a client meeting today to brief in some work and provide a quote and all that, so I'm thinking about how missing-nin do these things.
I think Red basically has to be right when she says that her research shows missing-nin need big professional networks to be successful.
For example, someone might have worked with a really good combat ninja to escort their black market goods from village to village, but then they say "now I need a spy and a saboteur, my competition is killing my profits!' And the really good combat ninja might go "well can I interest you in a murder instead?" but if they hold fast, that combat ninja probably has a guy they know, somewhere, who is a really good spy and saboteur.
So the goal for many missing-nin (who want to make ends meet by actually performing services in the semi-legitimated black economy, rather than just living as a source of mayhem (the downside to that lifestyle is that authorities will not turn a blind eye to it for long)) is to enter the professional networks of other, like-minded missing-nin and clients. They want to be the guy someone knows!
So how do you do that? Where do missing-nin meet? How do they connect with clients? Thinking emoji, thinking emoji, thinking emoji, etc.
Some ideas:
People think old or seriously injured missing-nin don't have long to live but actually a lot of them become ambulatory (...maybe) information exchanges, serving a supporting function in connecting people with people or people with work, in exchange for a cut. They're old, they know everyone.
In select towns there's an exchange point, much like the one where Kakuzu turns in his bodies for money? Maybe they're the same thing.
Possibly the people from the first dot point operate the establishments in the second one.
Actual official ninja villages use missing-nin sometimes, so sometimes if you're an elite you'll run away from your masters and someone else will step in like "we don't want to offer you the security or resources of a village, but we have a really ugly and dangerous job for you if you want to take it." Hooray for the life of a contractor!
Really informally: Say you fight one guy when you're doing a horrible job, and then you run into him on the streets six months later and he's like, 'Oh, you? I remember you,' and then you just tag along and end up meeting all his other acquaintances who also tried to kill him sometime. He has vetted you. Now you start introducing yourself with 'Do you know X? No? Y?' and then suddenly YOU know all the people, too. Three years later some new punk tries to kill you and you run into him in the street later and YOU'RE like, 'You? I remember you,' and you vet them. The first guy you met is now missing a leg and collects cash for dead bodies. It's the circle of life.
There's overlap between "really informally," and "really formally," with loosely organised groups of missing-nin (arguably like akatsuki) having sponsorship and enforced nominee periods. Missing-nin are some of the least trusting people on the planet, of course, but they create these artificial systems that are supposed to help them establish rapport and trust over time. Some work better than others.
