You shivered, “Ugh I hate Imp bases” You groaned as you followed BD and cal through the dark hallways of the base, your lightsabre gripped in your palm as you kept alert for any stray stormtroopers wandering around. 

The slight click of your boots made you jump every so often, on edge and exhausted as you spent the past few days going out nonstop with Cal. Leaving early in the morning and not returning till long past even your crewmates retired to bed. 

Cal had noticed your recent fatigue and promised today would be the last day before you both took a few days off, catching up on some much needed rest and proper cuddles. You suddenly stumbled as your eyes drooped, tripping over your own foot. 

Cal was quick to look over his shoulder as you tumbled to the ground. Pain shooting up your thighs as your knees hit the cold metal of the hallway floor. You groaned as you braced yourself with your hands, hearing the clattering of your lightsabre as it slid across the floor and feeling Cal’s gloved hand grip your shoulder. 

He immediately jumped to check you for injuries as you rocked mack to sit on your heels, “I'm fine Cal, just took a tumble that's all” You assured as you spoke softly, watching his brows furrow in worry. 

“Are you sure? You can barely keep your eyes open…” His tone was laced with worry as his other hand came up to your face, his thumb swiping under your eye, where you knew deep eyebags were sunken and dark in color. 

“I'm just a bit tired, lets's finish clearing the base and just get out of here okay? Merrin promised to make dinner and I can’t wait to see what she cooks up” You gave a light chuckle at the end of your sentence, assuring your very worried Jedi boyfriend that you were okay. 

You knew he didn’t quite believe you but he smiled and helped you off the floor anyway, BD crawling off his shoulder as he stood, opting to run a bit further down the hall. You brushed off your pants and summoned your lightsabre to you, continuing through the base.

After another hour or so you and Cal had finally made it back to the exit, only running into two groups of stormtroopers, and some droids. Now you were both making a beeline for the exit with a purge trooper hot on your heels. BD had quickly run out of stims between the two of you and Cal decided he’d rather not risk either of you coming out of it any more banged up than you already were, thus deciding to hightail it out of the base for the time being. 

You didn’t know the extent of his injuries but you were sure they were worse than yours. He had taken the brunt of the blows for you, seeing as the fatigue of your recent journeys was hitting harder on you than it was on him. 

You were racing ahead down the hallway with BD on you shoulder to get the service elevator while Cal staggered behind, trying to keep the Purge trooper occupied with a blaster you had picked up off of one of the troopers you killed. 

Adreniline was pumping through your veins as you rushed to the operating pad, allowing BD to jump off your shoulder and start tinkering with it to call the elevator. Your head whipped around to see Cal rounding the corner at mock speed, his eyes wild as he sprinted towards you. As you turned your head back to BD to see the progress, the corner of your eye caught a glimpse of black and purple rounding the corner after him. 

“How much longer BD?” You shouted as you heard the furious thudding of boots approaching. BD didn’t answer as the doors opened with a ding. BD quickly scampered inside and you stepped in placing your had on the door to hold them open, turning to see your companion closing in on the elevator. 

Your heart dropped as you saw the purge trooper dangerously close behind Cal, you bit the inside of your cheek as gauged the distance Cal had and your chest tightened at your realization. He had a good fifteen feet before he would be in the clear, you could see the way his chest heaved and you knew with the way the purge trooper was gaining on Cal that he wouldn’t make it. 

You moved to step out of the elevator to help Cal but winced and clutched your side, where a storm trooper had nicked you in the side with their blaster. You looked at Cal and outstretched your hand, using the force to pull the blaster from his grip and bring it to you. 

Once the blaster reached your hands you wasted no time using it to shoot at the purge trooper beind Cal, and barely moved quick enough for him to get in the elevator, and usher BD to close the doors. 

The last thing you saw as the elevator doors sealed was the Purge trooper slashing their staff across them, leaving a red mark streaking across the doors. You sighed and slumped down against the side of the elevator next to Cal. Leaning your head against his shoulder and clasping his hand in yours.

He gave your hand a gentle squeeze and kissed the crown of your head, chuckling as BD settled into your lap. “Thanks for the save, that was a close one,” He said lightheartedly as you hummed, you eyes falling shut. 

The gentle hum and passing lights of the elevator came to a jolting stop and the scraping of metal wretched your ears. Cal shifted and BD jumped up, tinkering with the command board. He beeped and you groaned, “Great, now were stuck, and in an elevator of all places” you grumbled and curled into Cal’s side. 

He simply chuckles “Yeah, yeah. Just rest a bit for now, me and BD will fix it and ill wake you up when were ready to head back to the Mantis” He said and you made a noise of agreement, your body ached and your head was pounding. A nap sounded just right. 

- The next morning you awoke to find yourself in your and Cal’s shared courters, your wounds delicately bandaged and your clothes changed to something comfy. You smiled and curled back into Cal, who was laying next to you in a similar state, ‘Of course he carried you back’ You rolled your eyes internally but couldn’t help the smile that was plastered on your face.

not every fic that causes you some form of distress does so due to negligent or otherwise inadequate tagging. sure, i agree that there is a real problem with people not tagging their works properly, and it can be very annoying to exclude something out of your search and stumble upon it, anyway. but please remember that all tags are is a set of words - and this is art we're talking about, this is people we're talking about. you cannot summarise an entire work or an entire human interaction down to a couple of words. if you could, then what would be the point of writing the fic in the first place? when you buy a new book, you usually don't get more than the summary and genre, and maybe a couple of key words and reviews. do you see people going on and on about every little thing they find in a book that they think should have been warned about ahead? no. so don't place those same expectations on fanfic writers. don't expect us to tell you everything that happens in our fic, down to every last detail. don't expect us to miraculously know what you'll feel like after reading it, and warn you about that as well.

tags are a great way to get across the general gist of a fic, warn for possible triggers or things that can commonly be found anywise upsetting. but they're not the end all be all of everything. sometimes you have to click on a fic not fully knowing what to expect, and sometimes someone will mistag something, but sometimes you just won't like a fic and that's all there is to it. and then instead of bitching about those nasty authors who refuse to tag their works, you calm the fuck down and click away.

I think I need to do one of these but uhh, hey I’m Thorn, you can also call me Thorny! I’m a bit of a fandom elder in warriors I guess? Not in the sense that I’m old, but that I’ve been within the fandom since I was a wee whelp though comparatively I’d say I’m slightly older than the average fan.

I’m a young adult (saying this for clarities sake, I do not want anyone to be uncomfortable near me), and I try to be as clean as possible on my account, but I’d say rating wise, everything here is pg13 and if it notes of anything outside of that, it’ll be tagged of course to avoid those uncomfortable with said topics stumbling onto them! If I mistag something or forget a tag, please let me know, I’ll try to correct the error immediately! That being said, content on this blog will dip into darker topics, but mainly topics I’ve already seen in media targeted for all ages or younger ages. I will also cuss a fuck ton, nothing explicit of course, but I have a vocabulary that would likely make a sailor blush, so know that I’m trying to be inclusive and safe for younger fans whilst still keeping my own edge.

After seeing @nixster627​ post on the most popular ships under the MDZS novel tag I got curious about the Donghua. I looked at the 10 most poplar relationshp tags, 10 most popular romantic relationship tags (where a A&B made top 10) and 10 most popular platonic relationship tags (gen only).

Quick house keeping about the data 

Some of these fics are likely mistagged, I have not accounted for, nor attempted to address this issue when recording the data

This is referring to fics that are tagged with the 魔道祖师 | Módào Zǔshī (Cartoon) tag excluding ALL crossovers, both with MDZS Novel/CQL/Audio Drama and other fandoms. This is partly because almost all fics tagged donghua are also tagged novel. There were a total of 275 fics.

To determine the next most popular ships I did this by removing popular tags from the search function. This means that fics tagged with multiple ships etc would have been removed and may have skewed the dataset

The breakdown of tagged relationships by category has not been expanded beyond the top 10 to include fics with the same number of entries. This is because it quickly got real tedious and also confusing trying to work out how many fics had one entry in a category. Who knows how the ao3 sorting system works with the same number but sorry not sorry for that priotising of some ships above others.

All data is correct as of 13:30 UST, 23/02/2023 when viewing with an AO3 account

TOP 10 MOST POPULAR RELATIONSHIP TAGS

First we have the top ten relationships with both their absolute value and percentage within the fandom. Shockingly Wangxian is not top. 

Pretty similar to above but this time we’re only looking at Romantically tagged relationships, bye bye JC & JL. There are actually 12 relationships here because the bottom 3 all drew and it felt unfair to exclude them.

Stats on Categories

There’s also quite a lot of interesting information if you look at the categories invididually. Some ships that aren’t in the top ten get a day in the limelight, it’s easier to see what relationships really like what ratings etc

Each table has 3 columns, the total number of tagged fics with the ship, the percentage of tagged fics with the relationship as a total of the rating category, and the percentage of the tagged relationship in the rating category as a total of the tagged fics with that ship across all ratings.

Here we can see that while Wangxian is the most popular gen ship, people who write JC & LXC really like gen fic, 100% of their fics are gen. Wangxian on the other hand is not very popular as gen at only 13%

Interestingly the Cangse Sanren/LQR tag is only popular as gen. Also look, a wild OFC/OMC ship

Top 10 platonic is only a datset for gen for obvious reason and its only top 9 but still, interesting to see what’s popular

Teen

In comparisons to the total it’s interesting to see Wangxian leading the charge in the lower category ratings, leaving JC/WWX far behind when overall JC/WWX is actually one fic ahead. Probably because a lot of fics are tagged Wangxian even if its not really about them because they’re just that sickening couple. Also hello NMJ. It’s also nice as a big gen fan to see some platonic relationship tags here hello.

switching over to romantic adds Jin Ling/Lan Sizhui, Nieyao, Sangcheng and WWX/OC to the mix

Mature No platonic relationships made top 10 for mature so one table only

Those JC/LWJ/WWX truthers really like mature. JC/WWX is leading the charge once again but as seen by ship% mature maybe isn’t their thing. Or maybe it is considering there are five categories. Also sangcheng, nice, my guilty pleasure to read of my two favourite characters who I don’t think like each other very much but sometimes I like indulging myself and pretending they do.

Explicit Once again, no platonic ships made it this far

XXC/XY fans like writing explicit, which really doesn’t surprise me like, hmm. Don’t think they have a gen, suitable for all audiences, romantic relationship lbr.

Shout out to that LQR & LWJ uncle nephew relationship, actually do rate LQR as an uncle, Deserves more love and attention. Interesting to see that the majority of the JC/WWX and WN/WZL falls into unrated, while its much lower for Wangxian. There were a lot more ships with only one entry but ao3′s ranking system was not in their favour.

Pushing LXC/WWX into the charts with that romantic. Interesting to see that 2% there tbh that’s probably an error, flame me later. LWJ/ALL is a not rated delicacy

You Could Never Hurt Me

This is my next Whumptober prompt for Day 15: Possession, starring rogue sorcerers, mind control, and a whole lot of angst!

Excerpt:

Those cold, white lenses snapped up to lock onto Tony again, narrowing like a hunter who had spotted its prey, and the man felt his heart drop into his stomach with realisation.

This was his kid anymore. This wasn’t Peter.

The sorcerer -that bastard­-, he’d done something to him to make him wild. Make him violent. Tony could see it in the way that the boy’s breaths had grown ragged and the muscles under his suit flexed with raw strength, strength that Peter had repeatedly confessed he was afraid of ever letting out of control. There were no smiles, no quips, no “Did you see that Mr Stark?!”

Instead there was a husk of the boy Tony once knew, crouched on the ground and rearing for an attack- an attack on him.

as someone who’s been using the site basically as long as they’ve been trans (which is a pretty long time at this point), Danbooru’s relationship with trans issues is fascinatingly complex

like, once upon a time, they had a “trap” tag. they eventually replaced it with the far less problematic “otoko no ko” tag (”otoko no ko” is Japanese slang for anyone who is AMAB but appears to be female; it’s a blanket term that covers both trans people and crossdressers, and it’s basically a pun on a masculine term and a feminine term). this isn’t that strange... until you consider that they did this in like 2010, long before being at least slightly cool about trans people on the internet was as normalized as it is now. they were kinda ahead of the curve on that one. i wasn’t that cool about trans people yet in 2010 and i’ve been trans for almost nine years now

and they’re not shy about it either- this is from the Danbooru wiki page on the otoko no ko tag: “English-speaking fandom has traditionally used the word "trap" for this concept. Due to the negative implications of the term and its history (which otoko no ko largely does not share) as well as the term's ambiguity in English, its use is inappropriate for tagging purposes and it has been aliased.“ (”aliased” meaning “if you try to search “trap” on Danbooru, the system will automatically redirect you to “otoko no ko”)

but yet despite the fact that they were ahead of the curve on getting rid of the “trap” tag.... to this day, they still have a “reverse trap” tag. it’s literally been like twelve years since they got rid of the original tag because it was offensive and they still haven’t fixed that one? fucking bizarre.

and then there’s the community. the community isn’t actually that complex- it’s a fairly standard situation where the majority of the community is pretty good about being cool to trans people, but a pretty large chunk is still extremely not decent about it, and it’s rare for things to get above pretty good. i’ve been in tons of internet communities like that, like Dynasty Reader for instance. but while the community’s not that complex, it’s complex at all and still reflects the rest of the site’s relationship.

and then there’s...... how trans characters are tagged. Danbooru has an extremely strict tagging system, which for the most part is good, but becomes a nuisance in any situation where things are not black and white, and trans people very often fall into that.

mainly: Danbooru’s “boy” and “girl” tags. hoo boy, are the “boy” and “girl” tags a doozy when it comes to trans people.

for one, it’s just not entirely consistent across the community. some people will always tag a trans girl with the “girl” tag no matter what, but they’re a small minority. but at the same time, while they’re a small minority, they’re also often left alone. Danbooru is usually pretty harsh about mistagging things, but in this case they’re a lot more lenient.

but there is a pretty consistent trend across most of the community... and even then it’s pretty complex. hell, it varies from character to character sometimes (there’s a pretty big spectrum of how consistently they’re correctly tagged- an internet person’s OC is on the “pretty much always tagged properly” end (because the internet person is probably very vocal about it), Ruka from Stein’s;Gate and Naoto from Persona 4 are on the “pretty much never tagged properly” end (because even Stein’s;Gate itself can’t seem to decide if Ruka is trans or just a femboy and Persona 4 is extremely transphobic), and Lily Hoshikawa is somewhere in the middle, leaning slightly more towards “tagged properly” than “not tagged properly” (because Lily is pretty firmly trans, but because they don’t explicitly say the word “transgender” in the show, there are people who say “i’m not transphobic but Lily isn’t trans”))

the biggest trend i’ve seen, though, is that when a character is canonically a trans girl (especially if this character came into prominence in circa 2016 or later), then she’ll get the “girl” tag in SFW posts and the “boy” tag in NSFW posts. the rule seems to be that if the post is explicit, then “boy” and “girl” really just mean “amab” and “afab” so you shouldn’t take it too seriously if a trans girl gets tagged as “boy” because we’re not actually calling her a boy we swear; but if the post is safe, then “boy” and “girl” mean “boy” and “girl”- after all, if she looks like a girl and identifies as a girl and we can’t see what’s in her pants (even if we know already anyways!!!), then of course she’s a girl!

there’s also the “other” tag for nonbinary characters, which does actually see a fair amount of use.

i would propose they make an actual decision to overhaul the system to make it more consistent......... but “boy” and “girl” are easily like the most common tags on Danbooru, and they already have like six variants depending on how many people are in the picture. it would be the biggest undertaking they’ve ever taken. with replacing “trap” with “otoko no ko”, they just had to do a search and replace; for this, they’d need to comb through every picture to figure out what “girl” and “boy” means in each individual one. i’d say that’s worth it, but it would take more than being “pretty good” about trans people to fix this deeply broken categorization system, that much work would require that they be extremely good.

now im not quite sure if you want only writing tips or writing blog tips, so ive included tips and tricks for both!

WRITING BLOG TIPS :

have a masterlist. this might seem stupid and obvious, but ive seen people with no masterlist. people are lazy, so if they cant access your writing easily, they will just click away.

have a clean theme. aesthetics are important. they are. people love clean and easy to navigate themes. again, people are lazy, so if you make it easy to click through your blog and get to your writing, youll increase the chance of people reading your stuff!

how to get your work show up in general. putting links in your fanfic might lead to your story not showing up in the search. ive also heard that a banner thats too big can cause that. even using too many tags can lead to your work not showing up. its complicated.

the first five tags. im sure youve heard abt this already but the first five tags are the tags that will actually show up! so if someone follows #bts fluff and you tag your fic with that, your fic can show up on people's dashes as a recommended post!

tag accordingly. speaking of tags, please tag accordingly! theres nothing more annoying than finding a jimin fanfic in the taehyung fanfic tag. i really discourage you from mistagging your stories. if im scrolling through the taehyung fanfic tag and find a jimin fanfic, it makes me want to not read it. just tag your fics accordingly.

reblog your fics. i mean it. seriously, reblog them as much as you want! people live in different time zones or sometimes forget abt wanting to read your stuff, so reblogging it consistently for a week or so to get it on people's dashes helps!

teasers and taglists. i recommend doing both! teasers help to get people excited for your story and taglists ensure that people will read it, or at least remember to!

dont stress abt notes. now, this is less of a tip but rather something i just really really really want to tell you! i know youve heard this before, but please do not stress about notes. tumblr fame does not exists! it doesnt matter if your writing gets 2 notes or 300 or 5k notes! i do understand how getting a lot of notes can be motivating (every fics deserve all the love in the world by the way!!) but in the end, it should not be your motiviation to write. focusing on notes will ruin writing for you. it will. the amount of notes your fic will reach has nothing to do with how good your writing is. dont let something as superficial as notes ruin the fun of writing for you. its seriously not worth it! write for you and no one else!

WRITING TIPS :

write self indulgent fics. i seriously think all fics should be self indulgent. writing fics should be fun, so please write whatever you want! also, theres no such thing as an overdone trope. if you want to write a fake dating enemies to lovers fic, please write it! you might think there are already a bunch out there and its not worth writing another one, but youre wrong! there isnt one out there thats been written by you yet. go write it!

make playlists. now this is a bit specific to me because im absolutely obsessed with music, but making playlists that fit the mood of the fic has always helped me while writing and gotten me out of writers block before!

take your time. writing is freaking hard and when writers block hits, theres rarely ever something that you can do. try not to stress too much abt it! it happens to the best of us!

balance dialogue and detail. its important to find a middle. if im reading a fic and theres paragraph after paragraph after paragraph of detail, the chance of me just skipping that part is really high. because even though i love detail, it does get boring. so use dialogue to spice it up!

reading. okay, this sounds weird because youre asking for writing tips, but reading seriously help your writing so much! if you wanna improve your writing skills, reading a lot is going to be key. now, im not saying reading is necessary, but i do think that it can help you to better! whats even more important though is that you try to analyse people’s writing while reading. when i say you should analyse people’s writing, i do not mean you should write an entire analysis of a book, but to take a second and think to yourself how the authors just did that. how did they convey oc’s sadness? why did they just describe the weather? whats the purpose of this scene?

switch up sentence/paragraph length. shorter sentences/paragraphs = emphasise something and pick up the pace. longer sentences/paragraphs = slow down the story and allow for more detail. its important that you do a mix of both. utilise the length to your advantage. a well placed short sentence/paragraph can pack a lot of punch and turn your sad story in a heartbreaking one.

outline your fics. look this is very personal again because some people dont like to outline their fics, but i recommend outlining your fics. and when i say outline your fics, you can do it as little or as much as you want! it can be a few notes, or a long list of every detail you want to include. i just want you to know where this story is headed. its so easy to write yourself in a corner and trust me, you dont wanna end up there.

allow yourself to be free. this connects to the previous point i just made. even though i do recommend outlining your fics, i am also a firm believer of taking the story somewhere else if you feel like it. ive scrapped complete outlines before. half of the scenes i write also arent in my outline at all. you dont have to stick to the outline. if you think that a specific scene would add something to your story, then please go ahead and write that scene. just always remember where youre headed and dont loose focus.

have fun. i just really wanna reiterate this point again. its just so important to me that you have fun while writing! seriously. its just fanfiction. it should be fun. go crazy. i support you!
