The Side Hustle: Second Jobs To Make Extra Money
A side hustle is a part time job, a second job, or alternate way to earn money – outside of your 9 to 5 career. The economic downturn left many well-qualified adults scrambling to earn wages that would continue to put food on the table, with many taking on a second job just to make ends meet.  According to FOX News and the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. job outlook remains dismal, with wage incomes improving by just 1.4%, and the economy expanded by only 1.9% during the first quarter of 2012.
Whether you’re trying to pay off bills, add to your children’s college fund, or save for a special event, taking a second job is a route many working adults take in order to get ahead financially.
Freelancing Freelance jobs are plentiful across the World Wide Web. However – unless you live in Pakistan and are able to work for pennies on the dollar – quality freelance jobs take some digging to find. I have freelanced for Yahoo and Demand Media Studios, edited web sites for small web publishers, and worked as an independent freelance writer. Of these choices, editing web sites paid the most… writing web content as an independent was the most flexible and pays well, and working for the “content mills” pays – but does it pay what you’re worth?
Demand Media Studios strict content form and requirements hardly make it worth the $25 per article you’ll receive… if you’ve spent an hour writing the article and it’s accepted as-is, $25/hour is awesome. However, this is rare with DMS, so in reality is takes more like 2 – 3 hours to earn the $25. Yahoo Contributor Network is the most user friendly place I have found to write for money… but at $15 per post you really need to have the concept down pat, write fast with few errors, and produce cookie-cutter content that can make your eyes cross by the end of the day. Freelance writing for blogs and websites is a good choice as a side hustle – IF you have the skills needed to turn content fast, and with few mistakes.
Blogging For Money – Side Hustle or Hype? My full time career is as a Blogger. I blog across several websites, and those sites make money through paid advertising, reviewing products, and creating interesting articles and content that make readers want to come back for more. When I first began blogging, I was also doing a lot of freelance writing and editing to put food on the table. I could go on and on about how to become a successful pro blogger, but the truth is that I followed the wisdom of another highly successful blogger, who recently rolled out an e-Book on making money as a blogger.  The eBook, How I Make Money Blogging, is a no-holds-barred tutorial on how to start, and how to create a viable income as a blogger. Since I know the author – Crystal Stemberger – have worked with her as a colleague on several projects, and have personally followed her success on Budgeting in the Fun Stuff, I highly recommend buying this eBook. Her actual website, How I Make Money Blogging, gives details weekly, but the book is one of the best places to start for newbies… of an excellent way for current bloggers/freelancers to get back on track and tuern their blogs into a lucrative business. I know that this eBook is in the up and up, and I couldn’t even say it better – or detail the steps Crystal outlines –  myself. I have watched as Crystal’s monthly earnings went from a level where she could quit her day job… to the point where her husband has been able to quit his own job to work alongside her from their home office. These people are solid, intelligent, hard working folks – and Crystal’s template for success is not to be overlooked. If you’re even remotely interested in creating a work-from-home career, please take a moment to check out the eBook… Click here to visit How I Make Money Blogging.
I do earn a commission for telling you about the eBook — so let me thank you in advance for clicking through my link (above) when you go to buy the eBook. Be sure to come back here to Thriftability and comment on your success with the tips in the book – or email me directly to share your story. If you are having trouble getting started, I’m happy to help. I have 8 years experience as a web dev/web editor, and have been a professional (paid) blogger for the last 3 years. I know that sometimes getting started can be frustrating, but it is definitely worth it for people who have the drive and determination to make it happen. so if I can help or answer a question, feel free to email: Lisa {at} Thriftability {dot} com. The book, How I Make Money Blogging is the true story of Crystal Stemberger’s experience in leaving her day job to work form home as a full time blogger and web ‘preneur. Definitely worth the read!
Side Jobs: Seasonal and Temp Work Taking a job during the holiday season is a good way to earn money in a short period of time. As long as you’re not paying for child care while you work (perhaps your spouse or a relative can keep the kids), you can earn decent money in retail during the holidays. Seasonal and temp work can pay off as well – as long as you’re OK with the reality of becoming involved with a company or project for a short term period. Keep in mind: with the unemployment rate hovering at 8.2% nationwide, you’re up against other adults who have no jobs at all, while those looking for the side hustle are out to supplement their primary source of income. Bring your “A Game”, and treat the interview for a second job as seriously as you would for any other. Dress for success, and be enthusiastic.
Put Your Skills To Work For You Perhaps taking a second  job is out of the question, because you have kids at home, your primary job is time consuming and you only have random hours in which to work, or… (be honest) the thought of taking on a second job makes you feel ill. I can relate to this! This is why I started working from home in the first place: I needed extra cash, but I was also needed at home as a single mom with three pre-teen and teen-aged kids. Think outside the box. Maybe you have valuable skills that could bring in a secondary income without ever leaving the house. Can you sew? The number of young professionals who have mastered the tasks once taught in Home Ec has dwindled sharply over the years. One of my neighbors takes in ironing – clean clothes brought over just to be presses – and makes $40 in an evening… ironing while watching her favorite TV shows or movies. Lawn care, auto maintenance, child care and supplying home-cooked meals are other ways to earn money from home. My latest hobby has just started bringing in extra (unplanned!) cash… I have a large organic garden, and sell produce at the local Farmer’s Market. Regardless of where, how, or how much, the side hustle is becoming more the norm for many Americans.

This might sound very silly but I just don't know how to be more proactive. I've been very passive all this years until this point where I feel like I can't anymore. I wish I could be more hardworking for the things I want but I get all overwhelmed and don't even know how other people have the energy or the motivation. People think Im just lazy. I don't have almost any skills let alone any that I can monetize, I feel like Im going to be a looser forever.
I think this is a problem that a lot of people - especially younger people - are struggling with right now. We want to achieve great things, and we feel like we should be achieving great things, but many of us are so paralyzed by doubt/anxiety/apathy/uncertainty that we have a hard time mustering up the motivation to run basic errands, let alone chase our dreams. I’ve certainly spent more than my fair share of time beating myself up for the countless days that I’ve fucked around on Reddit all day instead of actually achieving anything, even when I was fully aware that I was sabotaging my own dreams and goals by doing so. I just couldn’t always muster up the ability to care about the things I needed to be doing, even if there were dire consequences for not doing them. The good news is, there are definitely ways to overcome this issue, and reach a point where you are happier with your progress and your life. To get started, I recommend:
Decide what it is you actually want. Telling yourself to “be more proactive”, “work harder” or “have a better life” is not helpful if you don’t actually have specific goals that you’re working towards. It is very, very easy to find ways to be “busy” for 8 hours per day - but being busy doesn’t necessarily mean progress. Take some time, and think about some rough goals that you’d like to actually work towards. Don’t worry about how much work or effort it would be to achieve those goals, just start thinking about what you want in life, and what’s the most important to you. Think about the kind of life that you would like to have someday, and start figuring out the steps you need to take in order to get yourself from your current life to the life that you envision. It’s okay if those things are very far apart - the point is not for you to get overwhelmed, but for you to have something to be proactive about.
Start slowly. You cannot go from “spending 8 hours per day mindlessly browsing the internet amidst a pile of old take-out containers” to “running 5 miles every morning before making art for 8 hours in a spotless apartment with a fridge full of vegetables” overnight. Trying to change your routine too drastically and too quickly will lead to you burning out in a couple of days and going right back to your old ways, with an added dose of self-hatred because you tried and failed. Trying to be more productive and more functional is a process, and a long one at that. It’s not at all unusual or abnormal to take several years of work before you get your life to where you want it to be. Start slow. Start with incredibly tiny changes, and slowly build up those changes over time. If you currently live on a diet of fast food and candy, and you want to be a shredded, clean-eating fitness guru, you can’t rush into that all at once. Start by swapping out full-sugar pop for diet pop for the first month, and trying to drink more water. That’s it. Don’t make any other changes. Then the second month, switch out diet pop for flavored water. And so on. Change only sticks when it’s gradual.
Focus on one thing at a time. Again, trying to do too much, too soon is a recipe for fast burnout and self-hatred. Start by trying to change one area of your life, and one area of your life alone. Once you feel like you have a pretty solid handle on that part of your life and you have established some new habits, then you can add on a second area of focus. Spend some time, and really think about which area of your life is the most important for you to change, and which area of focus will improve your life the most. If it helps, envision your problems as rocks that you are carrying around in a backpack with you at all times. What’s the heaviest rock in your backpack? If you are overweight, unhappily single, making no progress building your YouTube channel and failing out of college, then your college grades are probably the thing causing you the most stress in your life, and they’re your most urgent concern - focus on that, and give yourself permission to let the rest of it sit on the back burner until you have boosted your GPA. Only then will you be ready to start changing something else.
Go easy on yourself. I think one of the pitfalls that many young people face these days is that they absolutely crush themselves with unrealistic expectations of what they “should” be doing with their lives; it’s hard to get up the motivation to do anything when you’ve convinced yourself that the bare minimum for success is an impossible ideal. I have friends with master’s degrees who still consider themselves failures that haven’t done anything in life. Remember that you are not a machine. Even at your most successful and high-functional, you will not be perfect and productive 100% of the time. You will still have lazy days where you don’t get much done. You will still occasionally order takeout instead of making a home-cooked meal. You will still occasionally procrastinate. Don’t set yourself up for failure by comparing yourself to an unattainable ideal - just aim to be a slightly better version of what you are right now.
Get used to tracking, even without making changes. It’s hard to set goals for improvement if you don’t have a solid idea of what you’re actually doing right now. Telling yourself things like “stop being so lazy and do more things” is setting yourself up for a spiral of self-loathing if you don’t actually track what you’re doing, because you won’t be able to see the small, gradual progress that you’re making. Being able to actually see yourself taking baby steps toward your goal is important for keeping you motivated, and keeping you from beating yourself up. Don’t track absolutely everything in your life - that becomes obsessive after a while - but keep an eye on some of the major things that you might want to change in the future. Install apps on your phone and laptop that track how much time you spend doing what. Set up the step tracker on your phone. If you want to eat better in the future, start tracking roughly what you eat now. I’m a pretty avid bullet journaler, I track a lot of my daily habits. Keeping track of the things you do, even if you’re not proud of them, and even before you start to work on them, gives you a baseline to work with, so you can establish how bad the problem is and see when you’re heading in the right direction.
Forget the obsession with monetizing. A lot of us have gotten this idea in our heads that we need to find ways to monetize everything that we’re even remotely good at, or doing that thing is somehow a waste of our time. I don’t want to generalize about millennials and gen z too much, but I do feel like our generation was raised on the belief that “doing what you love” is the most important thing in life; I personally have many friends that are obsessed with monetizing, to the point that they no longer do anything unless they can find some way to funnel it into advancing their blogger/influencer/creator career. I think this is a mistake. When you monetize something that you love doing, you turn it from a hobby into a job, with all the stress that comes with that, and I think it’s important for everyone to have at least one thing in their life that they do just for the joy of it. It’s okay to let work be work, and play just be play. And I say this as a person who has monetized one of my hobbies; I love true crime and forensic psychology, and I co-host a true crime podcast that has recently had a huge surge of popularity and is on the cusp of being monetized. I could write an entire post about the mental health side of being a creator with a public online presence, but in a nutshell, turning my podcast from a hobby into a business has required me to take it a lot more seriously, and it now falls more into the category of “work” than it does “fun”. My enjoyment of life requires that some of my other hobbies - like playing music - just stay un-monetized hobbies. Let yourself create and do things that don’t have economic value.
Don’t compare yourself to what you see on social media. I have had both personal friends and followers on this blog tell me that they feel bad about themselves because their life doesn’t measure up to what they see on Instagram, or because they feel that their own lives would not be worthy of posting online. This is a toxic mindset to get into. The things you see on social media are not reality, no matter how much they appear to be - people put incredible amounts of effort into carefully cultivating an online persona that makes them look more productive and accomplished than they actually are. I have a brother who who is a somewhat successful Instagram “influencer”, alongside his more successful girlfriend, and I could write an entire post about the lengths they go to to fake having perfect lives on Instagram, and the toll that their Insta careers are having on their mental health. If you are looking to be a more productive version of yourself, it’s best to steer clear of “motivation” from people who are paid to pretend to be successful online.
Set measurable, achievable goals. Goals like “be healthier” and “do more stuff” won’t get you anywhere - they are so vague that it’s not possible to tell when you’ve actually achieved them, or how much progress you’ve made. If you want to be more productive and feel like you’re getting more done, you need to set goals that can actually be worked towards and checked off when they are done. Instead of “go to the gym more”, aim for “go to the gym 5 days per week” as your end goal, and start with a solid couple of months with “go to the gym at least once per week”, and slowly increase from there. If you’re aiming for something big like “have an awesome job”, break that down into medium-sized goals like “finish an undergrad degree”, and then break that goal down even further into “hand in all my assignments on time this semester”, and break that down further into “write the first 10 pages of my paper by the end of the week”. Set tiny goals for yourself that you can easily achieve, and that will gradually accumulate into big accomplishments.
Remember that slow progress is better than no progress. If you write one sentence per day, it is going to take you a really long time to write a novel. It will take you a whole lot less time, however, than if you get overwhelmed at the thought of writing a novel and never write at all. Sometimes you need to break goals down into steps so small that they also seem not worth doing. It can feel a little silly to congratulate yourself for things like “brushed my teeth today” and “texted someone back today”, but those are little habits that add up into bigger things, and giving yourself that positive reinforcement is important. “Greatness” and “success” are not things you achieve all at once, they are made up of tiny habits that you’ve been working on for months or years at a time.
Take care of your mental health. Not feeling the motivation to do anything, even things that you enjoy, can be a symptom of depression. Everyone beats themselves up from time to time for not being more productive, but if your brain is constantly on a feedback loop of “I’m human garbage and I’m wasting my life”, that’s a pretty serious problem, and a solid sign that it’s time to seek out some professional help. Trying to make major life improvements without addressing underlying mental health concerns is kind of like trying to drive a car without wheels - you’re just not going to get anywhere until you’ve dealt with the obvious problem.
Remember that setbacks are okay. Even the most highly proactive and high-functioning people have days where they say “fuck it” and order takeout to eat in front of the TV. Everyone occasionally misses deadlines or leaves things to the last minute when they shouldn’t. Everyone shows up late occasionally. These things happen - we are humans, and none of us are perfect. The key to long-term proactivity and productivity, though, is not to let those small setbacks define you, and not to throw away all the progress you’ve made over a bad day or a bad week. Eating healthy six days per week will put you in a much better position than deciding “fuck it, I blew it” after one bad meal and returning to eating unhealthy meals 7 days per week. As the saying goes, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good - in other words, perfection is not attainable, and getting hung up on being perfect will prevent you from achieving many things that are good. The idea is not to be perfect; it’s just to keep striving to be a slightly better version of yourself.
Best of luck to you!

33 Legit Online Jobs That Pay $50,000+ From Home
Working remotely doesn’t have to mean taking a pay cut. There are more legit online jobs than ever. All it takes is being aware of the possibilities.
Below are 33 legitimate online jobs where you can earn over $50,000 a year — and most of them allow you to make your own schedule.
Plus, included are a number of valuable tips and resources that will help you land and succeed in your ideal online job.
Best Online Jobs
These top online jobs have the ideal mix of high demand, a low supply of talented individuals, and the ability to start earning fast. All you need is an internet connection and the motivation to get started.
#1. Proofreading
Quick summary: Earn money by proofreading books, academic papers, website content, audio transcripts and more.
Average pay: $17.50 per hour.
Pros: With no certification requirements, you can start earning fast.
Cons: Limited upside unless you decide to transition to a related high-paying field (such as editing).
If you’re the type of person that spots every typo and grammar mistake in the articles you read, consider a career as a proofreader. This is a great example of a job that needs no certification, and you can use your set of eagle eyes to make solid money.
With the explosion of web content that has occurred in recent years, it’s a job that’s in super-high demand. That means you can land your first client today, if you’re ready to start.
#2. Bookkeeping
Quick summary: Record and continuously update financial transactions for small businesses.
Average pay: $17.50 to $40+ per hour.
Pros: You’ll typically work with clients on a retainer basis, allowing you to earn a steady base of income.
Cons: Will need basic training to earn your first client.
At the top of most business owners’ list of “Least Favorite Work Activities” is bookkeeping. Of course, it’s a critical task for ensuring that a business runs smoothly and survives into the future.
If you’re someone who loves to work with numbers, you can earn very good money in the field. There are also a lot of opportunities to charge higher hourly wages the more you specialize.
And, just like proofreading, bookkeeping doesn’t require a certification.
#3. Start A Blog And Become An Influencer
Quick summary: Create a website that provides valuable information about a topic you care about.
Average pay: $0 to $10k+ per month.
Pros: High income potential.
Cons: Even experienced bloggers take nearly a year to earn a full-time living.
I started my first blog in 2009 and sold it two years later.
I launched this blog in August of 2016. Just over a year later, it was generating enough revenue that I felt comfortable leaving a job I’d held for over 10 years.
The great thing about a blog is that you’re building a sellable asset. A quality website sells for around 30X its monthly revenue. Therefore, if you’re able to make $1,333 per month, you have a $40,000 asset.
As for how to make money blogging, there are a number of ways.
These include:
Advertising — earn money by placing ads on your website.
Affiliate marketing — make money promoting other businesses.
Products and services — sell your own products and services to others.
Sponsored content — you can get paid for partnering with brands
One big upside to blogging is that it can be a great source of passive income. On the other hand, one downside is that it can take time to get up and running. As such, if you need money today, you might want to consider a different online job instead.
#4. Online Tutoring
Quick summary: Tutor students worldwide in English or other subjects.
Average pay: $18 per hour.
Pros: The ability to start earning in as little as a few weeks.
Cons: Limited upside.
One high-growth business industry right now is online education. And one of the fastest-growing niches within online education is online tutoring jobs.
There are now multiple websites that connect you with students all over the world who are looking to be tutored in a range of subjects.
When we ranked the best online tutoring sites, one of the top options was Education First.
EF is a U.S.-based company that pays as much as $20 per hour to start and offers cash bonuses for reaching certain teaching milestones.
Here are just a few of the benefits of working for EF:
The lesson plans and course materials are provided.
You can start teaching classes as quickly as two weeks after applying.
You can work when you want, where you want, with no need to worry about marketing your services.
No teaching experience is required, as EF considers your entire professional background and resume.
Apply with Education First.
VIPKid is another great online tutoring opportunity, although they get a lot more applications. As such, it’s better suited for those with more teaching experience.
You’ll need a bachelor’s degree to work for either company, but it doesn’t have to be in education and you don’t need an active teaching certification.
Apply with VIPKid.
Best Legit Part-Time Online Jobs (With No Fees Or Startup Costs)
What makes a great part-time online job?
Flexibility, fulfilling work, and the chance to earn as much by working part-time as others do from working full-time.
Here are the top part-time online jobs that meet these criteria.
#5. Social Media Marketing
Quick summary: Handle all social media tasks for small business owners.
Average pay: $20 to $100+ per hour.
Pros: Most social media clients are on a retainer basis.
Cons: Limited upside unless you’re willing to learn paid advertising, which can take time.
Many business owners don’t have the time to make consistent updates to their social media platforms, or to respond promptly to customer requests made via social media.
That’s why so many businesses today are looking to hire social media managers. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an 8% job growth rate is expected for social media marketing managers through 2028.
As long as you have the ability to post, curate and manage content on social media channels, you can start taking on clients today.
But the big money is in learning how to effectively deploy paid advertising, such as Facebook ads. Businesses need new customer leads, and you can earn premium wages if you know how to use things like micro-targeting to deliver ads to just the right audience.
This can be a great opportunity for college students, because the amount of time you need to spend on a project each week can be quite small (especially if you utilize automation), and the required schedule tends to be extremely flexible.
#6. Virtual Assistant
Quick summary: Work as a remote executive assistant doing a range of tasks.
Average pay: $18 to $35 per hour, according to Upwork.
Pros: The more efficient you become, the more clients you can add (and the more money you can make).
Cons: Most employers will want you to work certain hours of the day.
For years, most people thought of virtual assistants as low-paid overseas workers that could be trusted to handle basic administrative tasks.
But now the trend isn’t to hire a VA for $5 an hour. It’s to find the highest-quality VA possible. Someone who will really add value to your business.
And because of that, people are willing to pay significantly higher wages to the right person with the right skills and work experience.
So instead of just doing boring, repetitive tasks, you’ll be working for a successful business owner as a remote executive assistant.
Common tasks carried out by VAs include:
Answering email
Booking travel
Managing social media
Scheduling appointments
And more, depending on the field
Some VAs take on multiple clients, allowing them to earn over six figures a year from home. This means it can be one of the most lucrative remote jobs you’ll come across.
#7. Freelance Writing
Quick summary: Online writing jobs include things like drafting blog posts, articles, advertisements and more for clients.
Average pay: $15 to $40 per hour for beginners.
Pros: It’s a field that’s exploding in demand due to the growth of online publishing.
Cons: Standing out when you don’t have a lot of experience is difficult.
Freelance writing is one of the more lucrative side hustles I’ve tried. I started small, but in a year I was earning over $100 an hour.
Thanks to the growth of content marketing, it’s also a skill that’s more in-demand than ever.
#8. Photography
Quick summary: Supply stock photos that will be purchased and used by businesses.
Average pay: 20 to 50 cents per image sold.
Pros: A fun, fulfilling hobby that can double as a business.
Cons: Will take time to build up your inventory of photos available for sale.
One of the fasting-growing online markets is stock photography.
Businesses need quality stock photos for their websites, client presentations and more. If you love being behind a camera — even the one on your smartphone — you can get paid for uploading quality photos to stock photo sites.
You’ll earn anywhere between 20 and 50 cents per image sold. So, the goal is to have dozens of photos for sale, each generating daily commissions. This makes selling stock photography a great source of passive income, because you can get paid over and over again for work you only did once.
#9. Search Engine Optimization
Quick summary: Help small business owners get found online.
Average pay: $25 to $40 per hour for beginners.
Pros: Quality SEO specialists are in high demand.
Cons: Proving your value comes down to showing proof that past projects have worked — which makes it hard for beginners to land a job.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of helping businesses get found online — primarily on Google.
In fact, a recent study by Microsoft listed SEO as the most important hard skill for marketers to learn going forward in 2020.
In my experience, having managed local SEO campaigns in the past, there’s a lot of low-hanging fruit. That means you can drive a lot of revenue to a business just by implementing a basic set of SEO “best practices.” Therefore, you can charge a high hourly or project rate, knowing you’ll deliver results.
The best way to learn SEO is with hands-on experience. Personally, I learned SEO by starting a blog and seeing what worked and what didn’t.
With real proof of results on my resume, I was then able to obtain clients and earn a high rate for my work.
#10. Scoping
Quick summary: Edit transcripts for court reporters.
Average pay: $20 to $30 per hour.
Pros: Very flexible hours, as often you’ll be working off recordings.
Cons: Contracts can come and go based on your client’s hours.
Scoping is a little-known work-from-home job that’s been around for 30+ years.
A court reporter’s job is transcribing what’s said in the courtroom into written form, using a special system of shorthand so that they can keep up with the fast-moving proceedings. Court reporters then hire scopists to edit their transcripts.
Court reporters make money per page, not per hour. That’s why outsourcing the editing allows them to increase their earning potential.
Similar to proofreading and bookkeeping, no certification is required, there are very minimal start-up costs, and the earning potential is high.
#11. Graphic Design
Quick summary: Design engaging graphics.
Average pay: $25 to $40 per hour for beginners.
Pros: Pick your own clients and work in niches that interest you.
Cons: Will be a lot of project-based work, which can vary your income.
For the artists out there, graphic design is a great way to monetize your hobby. The web is becoming more and more visual — especially as mobile devices become the primary method of browsing.
The highest-paid graphic designers combine multiple skills into their designs. Knowledge in branding, sales and direct response marketing allows many graphic designers to charge over $100 per hour.
#12. Video Editing
Quick summary: Create engaging videos for social media, YouTube and websites.
Average pay: $25 to $35 per hour for beginners.
Pros: Growing in demand as the popularity of YouTube, Instagram and other video platforms increases.
Cons: Video editing requires a lot of focus, so it’s important you have the work environment and discipline to log longer hours.
Another online trend that’s picking up more steam year-by-year is video editing. Video editors with prior experience are in high demand today, with the potential to earn over $50 per hour the more you specialize.
#13. Marketing Automation Specialist
Quick summary: Design and implement automated digital marketing systems.
Average pay: $40+ per hour for beginners.
Pros: High income potential, with the ability to scale into an agency.
Cons: The best in the field have a range of skills, from copywriting to understanding the technical aspects of a particular software. These skills tend to have a longer learning curve.
I’m in a mastermind group that’s been meeting since 2009. We all do some type of marketing work as independent contractors for a range of businesses. We’ve each had our ups and downs. Yet, as I write this, things are going well for everyone.
Connecting the dots, we realized that once we committed to specializing in a growing digital marketing platform, we had to actually start turning clients away.
One of the fastest-growing segments is marketing automation, on platforms such as Ontraport and HubSpot. These platforms are experiencing explosive growth, and more are emerging all the time. Some other examples are Aweber, Convert Kit and MailChimp.
Taking a certification course to become a specialist can often land you in the $60 to $100 per hour range fast.
#14. Medical Transcriptionist
Quick summary: Edit medical transcriptions for local healthcare providers.
Average pay: Transcription jobs typically pay $10 to $25 per hour.
Pros: Steady source of income.
Cons: High startup costs to earn a credential.
There are dozens of data entry jobs online. Sites like Clickworker and Amazon’s Mechanical Turk provide typists with a lot of work opportunities, but they’re often micro jobs — quick tasks that pay almost nothing.
In order to make over $50,000 per year with data entry jobs, you’ll need to specialize. And beyond scoping, one of the best ways to specialize in data entry is by focusing on medical transcription.
The first thing to know about medical transcription is that it requires a certification, which you can get through a company like CareerStep. CareerStep offers a range of certifications in multiple work-at-home opportunities within the medical field.
With their medical transcription certification, which is approved by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity, you’ll prepare yourself to land an online job as a transcriptionist in an industry that’s hungry for qualified talent. CareerStep courses are not cheap (they start at $2,999), but they do offer both payment plans and discounts for military spouses.
If you’re not looking for a career and just want to make some extra income, there are a number of websites where you can get started with transcription jobs on a more casual basis.
The most popular sites are:
Rev — make 36 to 65 cents per minute of audio transcribed.
Go Transcript — earn up to 60 cents per minute of audio transcribed.
Scribie — pay starts at $5 to $25 per hour of audio transcribed.
DionData Solutions – hires only U.S.-based workers.
One thing worth noting about medical transcriptionists is that they’re seldom out of work for long, as more and more healthcare companies are looking to outsource tasks to keep overhead costs as low as possible.
#15. Voiceover Artist
Quick summary: Provide vocal recordings to be used in audiobooks, videos, films and more.
Average pay: $20 pay per hour.
Pros: Flexibility and freedom to work your own schedule.
Cons: As most work is contract-based, your income can vary drastically from month-to-month.
Voice acting is the art of reading a script and using your voice to bring that script to life. Quality voice actors are in especially high demand in the marketing field, as video marketing has exploded in popularity in recent years.
A good site to get started on is Upwork. There, you can gain experience working as a voiceover artist (and ideally find your niche).
#16. Technical Writing
Quick summary: Synthesize complex, high-level information for a specific audience to understand.
Average pay: $20 per hour for beginners.
Pros: One of the higher-paying freelance writing niches.
Cons: The work isn’t very creative compared to most traditional writing jobs.
For those who like to dive deep into learning new things — and aren’t afraid of tackling super-complicated topics — technical writing can be a great way to generate extra income.
As a technical writer, you’ll be responsible for writing user guides and other documentation.
Aside from being interesting work for those who love to research, it’s also widely recognized as one of the best-paying writing jobs available. Furthermore, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects growth at 8% per year through 2028.
#17. Customer Service Representative
Quick summary: Provide service to a businesses’ existing customers.
Average pay: $12 to $25 per hour.
Pros: Opportunities with Fortune 500 companies, which may provide benefits such as health insurance, 401(k), and paid time off.
Cons: You may have to work irregular hours (especially when just starting out).
Most customer service jobs will not pay you $50,000. In fact, according to Payscale, the average hourly wage for work-at-home customer service jobs is $13.92.
However, if you’re smart about where to look and the skillsets to master, there is a path to becoming a high-earner in the field.
For starters, because there’s a large supply of customer service jobs, I’d avoid looking for jobs under the name “Customer Service Representative.” Research by TheJobNetwork showed that terms like “Customer Experience Associate,” “Customer Engagement Representative,” and “Customer Service Advisor” actually paid $18 or more per hour — well more than your average customer service job.
Two fields with a lot of overlap (and higher pay than customer service) are “Account Management” and “Customer Success Manager.” In these fields, you’ll be doing a lot of customer service work but other skills — such as cross-selling and retention —  are required. As such, if you’re looking to become a high earner long-term, finding an entry-level position in account management or customer success might be your best bet.
Online Jobs That Pay Well For Entrepreneurs
The goal of a freelancer is to get good clients, do great work, and increase their value over time.
The goal of an entrepreneur is to build a repeatable system that provides value with or without the owner.
As an entrepreneur, you’re no longer working on projects for a set rate (or by the hour). Instead, your income correlates with the amount of value you can provide.
There are no limits to what you can and can’t do. But to narrow down your choices and help you figure out where to start, here are 10 ideas.
#18. Authority Sites
Quick summary: Build an informational website that helps people make purchasing decisions.
Pros: While working to build your authority site, you’ll learn very valuable, in-demand skills that can be transferred to your existing career.
Cons: Similar to a blog, it often takes a year or more to see a significant source of income.
A popular, highly-profitable and low-cost online business idea is building authority sites.
Authority sites are content-driven websites on a specific topic. They most often exist to help people like you and me make purchasing decisions.
Authority sites are a lot like blogs. Actually, if you were to build an authority site, a lot of the work is the same. The big difference is that blogs are more personal in nature. With a blog, you’re looking to build long-term relationships with visitors. Authority sites are much more transactional.
To best understand the idea, think back to the last time you searched for a review of a product. When you visited a website that had the review, that was likely an authority site.
As an example, I’m in the market for a sauna. So, I’ve visited different authority sites in the sauna niche, reading buyer guides and reviews.
The most popular way authority sites make money is through affiliate partnerships. With our sauna example, if I were to buy a sauna recommended by a particular site, that site would earn a commission.
And therein lies one of the big benefits to an authority site: since the owner doesn’t need to be present to make money, and they often drive traffic through passive sources like Google, such sites can be a source of passive income.
#19. Dropshipping
Quick summary: Sell items via a website and have them shipped directly from the manufacturer or wholesaler to the customer.
Pros: Can test the business model with very little money.
Cons: The dropshipping field is loaded with spammy marketing, so stick with learning the ropes from reputable sites like Shopify.
Shopify has created hundreds of opportunities for online entrepreneurs. Why? They made the process of selling online easy. From products and digital downloads to consulting services, over 1 million people use Shopify to run an online store.
One of the most common ways people get started is through dropshipping. The benefit of starting a dropshipping store is that orders are sent right to the customer. That means the store owners (like yourself) don’t have to hold inventory or deal with shipping.
And since you only need to order a product after a customer has bought it from your store, it’s a very low-cost business to start.
#20. Retail Arbitrage
Quick summary: Buy low and sell high.
Pros: A way for hobbyist and collectors to use their knowledge of a particular niche to make money.
Cons: Takes time and skill to find the best deals.
Do you love going to flea markets and garage sales, and browsing thrift stores? If so, you can make money online by flipping items for profit.
Think of this online business idea as buying an asset and selling it for a higher price. Your inventory can be anything you find at a garage sale or on a clearance rack.
The goal — and the key to making retail arbitrage work — is having an information advantage. This means understanding the market for what you’re buying better than the person who is selling that item.
Remember, the concept of arbitrage is based on the principle that a particular good has a higher price in one place than it does in another. That might mean it sells for more in California than it does in New York. But it might also mean that it sells for more online than it does in a brick-and-mortar store.
Winning at arbitrage means knowing how to figure out which items to buy and which ones to walk away from.
#21. E-Commerce Store And/Or Amazon FBA
Quick summary: Create your own online store or use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) to sell physical products online.
Pros: Very high potential in a fast-growing field.
Cons: Higher startup costs. Money often has to be reinvested in the business.
Amazon FBA is a business idea that’s getting a lot of attention lately.
The idea is to buy products directly from a manufacturer or wholesaler, then sell them online via Amazon. The most popular option is to use Amazon FBA, which handles all the warehousing and shipping (the “fulfillment”) for you. In fact, you can even have the manufacturer or distributor ship the products directly to Amazon, so that you never have to physically touch the items.
But you don’t have to limit your selling to Amazon. You can also use FBA to ship products you sell on eBay or your own website. It’s much easier than packing and shipping everything yourself, and the shipping rates Amazon charges you are much lower than you’d pay to UPS or FedEx.
#22. Etsy Store Owner
Quick summary: Create and sell homemade crafts and digital products on the world’s largest creative marketplace.
Pros: You’re taking advantage of a fast-growing platform.
Cons: As Etsy has grown it’s become more competitive, with large companies creating stores on the marketplace.
When it comes to legit work-from-home jobs for moms, Etsy is near the top of the list.
Think of Etsy like eBay for creative people, as some of the most popular products on the platform include arts, crafts and jewelry.
You can either do Etsy as a business (there are many full-time sellers) or use it as a way to make extra money in your spare time.
#23. Create A Course
Quick summary: Create an online education course.
Pros: Can test demand for ideas fast by utilizing online teaching websites.
Cons: The below sites, which have an audience looking for courses, often take a large cut of your profits. The best long-term business model is building your own audience, but that can take time.
If you have expertise others may find valuable, you can create a course online and sell it. This used to be very hard, as you had to build your audience from scratch.
But two websites, Udemy and Skillshare, now provide access to an audience of people who are eager to learn about almost everything under the sun.
There are all types of courses available, so it’s a great way to create a legit online job of your own.
#24. Home Health Agency
Quick summary: Manage a local team of home healthcare providers.
Pros: Demographic trends, specifically the aging of the baby boom generation, have increased demand.
Cons: High startup costs, including licensure.
A major trend in our economy is the need for qualified home healthcare. The aging population of the United States, as well as seniors’ increasing desire for care inside their home, is driving this trend.
A big benefactor of this trend has been local home health agencies.
A home healthcare agency provides qualified care to local residents. As employees are working at client’s houses, an office isn’t required.
This is by no means an easy business to start. To begin, you’ll need certain licenses and certifications. These vary by state, as well as by the type of care you offer.
Non-medical care agencies have the lowest startup costs and barriers to entry. This type of agency provides day-to-day living help, such as meal-prep and housekeeping. In contrast, medical care agencies work with Medicare/Medicaid and have more complex responsibilities.
#25. Virtual Recruiter
Quick summary: Find talented employees for businesses.
Pros: High income potential for those with large existing networks.
Cons: If working for yourself, income can vary widely as you’re only paid when someone lands a job.
If you love to network, this is a great low-cost business to start. What you’re doing here is finding talent for employers. Payouts can be quite large, as some placement firms charge upwards of 25% (or more) of the employee’s annual salary.
#26. Insurance Agent
Quick summary: Sell property, casualty or life insurance from a home office.
Pros: Some insurance income is recurring, making for a quality source of passive income.
Cons: Competitive field, often competing with companies with billion-dollar ad budgets.
Having been in this field myself for over 10 years, I’ve seen a lot of growth from individuals starting their own insurance agencies from home. Startup costs are low, the hours are flexible, and the commissions can be quite high.
If I were to start an insurance agency from home, I’d focus on selling small business insurance. The premiums tend to be higher than those of auto and home policies, and there’s much less competition.
#27. Travel Agent
Quick summary: Book and coordinate travel for individuals or businesses.
Pros: Fulfilling way to earn more for those who love to travel.
Cons: Income can vary, as travel tends to spike at certain times of year.
Believe it or not, travel agents are still in demand. It just depends on finding the right niche. This is an especially good business for you if you have personal or professional travel experience, because you can provide your clients with insights they can’t get from a website.

Online Job FAQ
How much do online work from home jobs pay per year?
When you work from home, you’ll usually (but not always) be classified as an independent contractor. That means you’re working on a per-hour or per-project basis, rather than for a set annual salary. As a result, your annual earnings can vary widely based on a number of factors. If you’re organized, motivated and efficient, you can often earn more money for the same amount of work as compared to a more traditional environment. But on the flip side, if you’re someone who finds it difficult to stay focused and has a tendency to coast through the day, you might end up making significantly less. That’s because as a freelancer or contractor, you’re only getting paid for the work you actually do. Being at home can be distracting, and it’s easy to end up with only four billable hours after an eight-hour workday. Your take-home pay will also depend on the types of contracts you’re able to win. You’ll make a lot more money as a paid social media manager than you will by doing online data entry jobs.
Where should I look for online jobs?
If you’re trying to get hired for a full-time position at a company, start your job search at FlexJobs — a great job board for finding remote work. As mentioned above, FlexJobs screens each listing before making it available to applicants. That’s a good thing, because the company’s research has shown that there are 53 scam job listings for every legit online job! Beyond FlexJobs, Indeed is another job board that’s worth checking out, as it has the most powerful search engine among job listing websites. If you’re looking for independent contractor or freelance work, sites like Upwork and Fiverr feature a bevy of legitimate online jobs.
How do I avoid work at home scams?
There are many scams when it comes to the advertising of work at home opportunities. That’s why, before applying for any job, you should research the company on Glassdoor, a site that allows former employees to leave reviews of the employer. You’ll find details such as average pay, growth opportunities, benefits, and more. A good rule of thumb is that if the company you’re looking to work for isn’t on Glassdoor, it’s not worth applying. If you’re searching for independent contractor jobs on Fiverr or Upwork, make sure to view the company profile before applying. On Upwork, you can even see how much the company has spent on freelancers, where it’s located, the average hourly rate they pay, and reviews from previous freelancers.
What are the qualifications to get an online work-from-home job?
As with any job, the necessary qualifications depend on the type of work you’re seeking. In general, if you need a certification to do the work in person, you’ll also need one to do it online. However, some jobs — such as freelancing writing and editing jobs — can be easier to get online if you have limited work experience. For example, while few newspapers will hire a journalist who has zero training, it’s fairly easy to gain a foothold as a content writer for a blog or website.
Legit Online Jobs With No Upfront Investment
The internet has made it much easier to make money from home. While many people are just looking for opportunities to make a few bucks here and there by taking online surveys or maximizing their cash-back shopping, you can also find legitimate work that pays just as much as — and often more than — offline options.
Whether your goal is to work full-time, part-time or run your own business, there’s no shortage of work-at-home jobs.
So get started today. Take at least one action: sign up for a free resource, update your resume, or even send that resume in. There’s a good chance you’ll be earning money online faster than you think.
Good luck!

Best Blogging Skills Required For A Blogger
There are great bloggers – there are also some who do not understand what should be a great blogger. Most of the blogs you will see are built and written completely incorrectly or for the wrong reasons. What’s more, according to the latest research, about nine out of 10 sites or blogs never make a penny.
So creating a successful website/blog to make you money is not a simple task, but it is not too complicated either. A successful website will always boil down to the skills that a blogger actually owns and uses.
The basic skill set of a good blogger There are only a few basic skills, but all of them are very important:
You must have the knowledge and a genuine interest in your website/blog subject
You must be prepared to study your market
You will need endurance, motivation and self-discipline
You will need the motivation to interact with other people
You must be ready to invest in your business
We will take a closer look at each of these elements in order to fully understand what is required.
1. Knowledge, passion and interest When creating a website or blog, the key element that will contribute to its success is interesting, useful and convincing content. This information must be written and downloaded regularly and consistently. So you really have to be interested in what you write.
If you do not, there is a huge risk that the initial enthusiasm for creating this website will quickly evaporate when you get tired of the subject. This is probably the biggest mistake made by people new to Internet marketing.
The “fuel” of your website is your content. You will hear phrases like “content is king” and it really is. If you have existing knowledge, a real interest and a passion for your subject, then writing becomes a very easy thing to do.
2. Research your market or niche It is important to take an interest in your market. However, there is always more to learn – and you also need to understand the intentions of potential visitors to your site or blog. This is where good market research can really add a lot of value to your website. Your market research should help paint a picture of who will be visiting your website and their interests.
The vast majority of Internet marketers do not include this step, and that is a huge mistake. While it’s not the most exciting thing in the world, by doing so, you can quickly spot current trends, understand what potential visitors to your website are looking for, and have a complete understanding of the market you are in. need to stay on top of your own market: initial market research can take as little as one or two hours, and it’s time well spent.
3. Endurance, motivation and self-discipline These three terms can easily be overlooked. However, internet marketing as a blogger can seem like a very lonely and uncomfortable place for many people. Sitting in front of a PC or laptop, ready to create a website/blog on a topic that interests you, the only person who can make it happen is you.
No one will say that you have done good or bad work. Nobody will hold you responsible for not having written your articles and having downloaded them. Only you can research your market, write the articles, download them and put it all together. To do this, it takes a lot of self-discipline, self-motivation and endurance to continue.
Many bloggers can overcome technical hurdles related to domain names and hosting and also get the first pieces of content. Yet a website with around 10 to 15 pages of good content will do nothing at all in terms of financial reward. The question is, can you continue? Do you have the discipline and motivation to keep writing and the faith to know it will work?
A website/blog of 50 to 100 pages will do much better than a site of 10 to 20 pages. It takes time, dedication, hard work, and persistence. It is a simple fact that most people are not very good at being their own boss.
4. Interaction with other people When you have great content on your website or blog, it is very useful to interact with your readers. If they take the time to leave comments on your blog, you should, of course, respond to them and be as helpful as possible. Remember to contact other bloggers in markets similar to yours. They may well be your competitors, but it doesn’t hurt to understand how they work.
5. Be ready to invest Some newcomers panic when they see the word “investment” because it involves spending money. However, investing isn’t just about spending a little bit of money: it’s mainly about investing your time.
Money If you want to start an online business, you must own that business. The costs of owning a website are low. All that is required is a domain name and hosting service. A domain name costs around $9 a year and hosting costs around $6 a month. So you can be set up for less than $116 a year – a small investment to start building a solid online business.
Time This is the real investment to consider. You will need to determine how much time you have or are ready to spend on the project to work. Each person’s available time is different, but I can at least explain how long it will take to create and manage a website.
The initial setup of the website takes approximately three to four hours; this includes domain purchase, hosting and configuration. It also includes the installation of a CMS (Content Management System) – the platform where you can write all your content. Then add content to your website or blog. The average page or article will take about an hour of your time.
Conclusion You should, of course, like to write and do it with your own opinion. You don’t have to be an award-winning writer, but you have to pay attention to grammar and spelling. You also don’t have to be a world-renowned expert. If you have a passion or interest in something, it will always appear in your writing.
Your website/blog should represent your own opinions and a bit of your own personality and style. Doing market research will improve the content of your website/blog. After that, it’s about believing that what you’re doing will work and eventually make you money. It requires a lot of endurance, motivation and self-discipline, a small amount of money and a lot of time.

I'm feeling like I'm at a point where i don't know what to do in my craft to expand my knowledge and fill my grimoire. What do you do in this situation? Do you have any resourses for different types of magick?
This is the second most common question I get (after “how do I start practicing magic?”), so first of all know that you are FAR from being alone in feeling this way. We’re in a “lifestyle” culture right now where we tend to show all the good aspects of what we’re doing “right” on Instagram, Facebook, etc, and when you look at other people (especially successful bloggers) you never seem to see the lulls, the days and weeks where they set it aside or didn’t feel it, but I promise that happens to everyone.
I draw a lot of parallels between art and magic, because personally for both practices I feel like a lot of it comes from the same place. The muscle I exercise to practice creativity is largely the same one I use to practice magic, so over time my practices for both have overlapped and criss-crossed and sometimes diverged, but run alongside each other. Because of that, a lot of my methods for dealing with creative blockage vs magical blockage (or “witchblock”, as I like to call it) are the same. I also draw a lot of parallels between witchcraft and baking, because baking requires a combination of skill and learned ability, but you can also make it your own. That’s probably for a different post, though.
I’m going to preface the rest of the post by saying that you can find a lot of what I’m talking about below in The Artist’s Way  by Julia Cameron. It’s a 12 week workshop that helps you to get through creative block and “revive” your creativity. A lot of people take issue with her manner of writing and the mention of “God”, but personally I was able to look past all that and found the core of it to be incredibly useful as both an artist and a witch. With that out of the way, here are the points I think are most important for witchcraft.
1. Input vs Output: I can’t tell if it’s just the way you worded your question or not, but it looks like there’s a lot of input and not as much output. Input being what you take in, the information you read, the research you do, filling your grimoire, etc. You can’t only  have input, though. There needs to be an outlet, a point at which you actually put what you’re researching into practice and trying things, making mistakes. Likewise, it wouldn’t be all that great if you had only output, and no input.
This one is really easy to think of from an art perspective. Someone who has only input will make a great critic, but a shoddy artist. Someone who has only output might have great ideas but terrible execution, or (and this one is worse in my opinion) great execution and terrible ideas.
Balance your input and output, and this will get the wheel spinning on its own. You’re giving yourself constant inspiration and getting yourself used to the “act” of trying things, and once you start trying things you give yourself new ideas to look up, new things to try, and your movement will just keep going forward like that. If you feel stuck, ask yourself when is the last time I had input? When is the last time I had output? and almost every time, one of the two has been missing for a while.
2. Brain Drain: The technique specifically used in Julia’s book is called “pages”, and the exercise basically consists of simply writing 3 pages every day in a notebook. It can be 3 pages of anything, the point is not for it to be “good” or poetic or anything at all, just to write. Ultimately, it’s a meditative tool. Writing three pages can be a great way to meditate especially for people who have a hard time meditating, people with AD(H)D, etc. I could have called this section “meditation”, but then I know half the five people reading this would have skipped over this entire paragraph.
That is what the function of brain drain is though, and I know we’re all sick of hearing how important meditation is in the community, but once you start finding the right way for YOU to meditate and achieve this “brain drain” function, it’s fucking life changing. I’m not over selling this. I have chronic anxiety and depression among other issues, and while I take medication for all of them there are limitations and side effects. “Brain drain” is one of the most helpful things for me to be able to deal with intrusive thoughts, get out of an obsessive thought loop, etc, and it also helps to get rid of the auto-censoring part of our brains that is constantly criticizing and over-analyzing everything we do. It helps you learn to tap into the sub-conscious part of your mind, and that’s crucial to both magic and art.
3. Witch Date: This is another technique from Julia’s book, which in there is called the “Artist Date”. The principle is simple: once per week, you have time set aside specifically to do something with your inner witch.
There are only two rules to this:
• It has to be something FUN. Something you actually want to do. This is not the time to sit down and write twenty pages of herb correspondences. This is a time slot reserved to do something your inner witch wants to do. Explore the woods, make a collage of 90s witch culture photos, do a love spell, pick flowers, etc. Your inner witch doesn’t want to do anything boring, or stuffy, or serious. And you love your inner witch, right? Take them out on a date to somewhere they would enjoy! • You are NOT allowed to cancel. This date isn’t for you, it’s for your inner witch. It’s for someone you care about (hopefully you care about yourself, too, but I know how much easier it is sometimes to care for other people than it is for ourselves) and that you don’t want to let down. You’ve set aside your time for them, and they have set their time aside for you. They’re looking forward to it, and they will always show up. Do the same.
The witch date is your time to really get in touch with what it is you want to do, rather than what it is you feel like you’re supposed to do. This is where you remember what it is you like about witchcraft, what it is that attracted you to it in the first place. This is where you nurture your relationship with magic, and the more that relationship grows, the more it can stand those times where you have to be apart.
Personally, between all three of these techniques I find myself having less and less problems with “witchblock” and it helped me feel a lot more confident in my craft (both magical and artistic). It’s always going to be a work in progress on both fronts, and that’s normal. I don’t think anyone ever reaches the point of “that’s it, I’m great, I’ve reached peak witch/artist and everyone can fight me” (except for the first few minutes immediately after finishing a project/spell, at which point that’s exactly what I’m thinking...) and stays there. We all have permanent impostor syndrome, even us practiced witches. The number of times I’ve had people say to me “well, I’ve been practicing for over ten years but I don’t know if that really counts..”.
I know you also asked for resources on different types of magic, but this post is long enough already and I don’t want to overload it with information. I am working on a video that will have a bunch of book resources for difference types of witchcraft, but for now that’s still in the research phase and I’d rather not post anything I haven’t looked at myself yet. You can always message me if you have one specific topic you would like a book reference on, though, and I’ll probably have something for you (I just don’t want to post a “masterlist” type thing yet).
I hope this helped answer your question!

A note on fictional jobs
Tumblr media
There's a joke that all fanfic characters are either baristas, teachers, lawyers or some denizen of the tattoo/florist au set. This isn't really fully true (there's also witches and vampire hunters!) but for anyone going for a realistic setting, let me at least, as someone who has worked a number of jobs in media, software development and catering, give some pointers on how that stuff works, because dear lord does Hollywood get it wrong.
This post is 2k words, so under the cut it goes.
Tumblr media
Journalism/Photography/Media
General tips
This sector seems to be pretty popular in old school comics, and for good reason. Clark Kent gets to go out into the city and be near events. It's a job women are historically allowed to do (and be sassy in) and even Peter Parker gets to just traipse around the city getting into adventures.
It must also be noted that all these characters were developed in the first half of the 20th century, and media has changed a lot since then.
If your character is a journalist, they will work long hours and not be paid *that* much. Carrie Bradshaw is the most unrealistic journalist character in the history of everything. Especially after, oh, 2010 or so, when the traditional press sales really started declining. No journalist is that well paid for that little. And none will have that much free time.
Journalists generally have a beat, and what they do and know heavily depends on that. Your character can get into the gritty streets of downtown chasing drug dealers, or they can go to theatre premieres. They won't do both. The Vast Majority of modern media have beats. A person can be a sports caster and then he will go to sports events to report them. They can be a jetset reporter or restaurant reviewer and go to swanky places. They can be a cultural reporter and be invited to premieres and shows. They can be a dedicated business journalist, reporting on IT, or cardboard logistics, or whatever, and go to conferences around the world. But they will rarely be all these things at once.
How wide this beat is, depends heavily on the 'range' of the medium. Big news rooms, like NYTimes, have a lot of journalists, and some very, Very specialised ones. This is deep dive, spend weeks trailing every leak out of the White House stuff. In contrast, a small regional tv station can have their reporter (with or without a camera man and sound tech) drive around the countryside reporting on pumpkin carving festivals one day, and grisly murder the next.
A lot also depends on the medium. If the character works for a newspaper, they will have a noon to eight shift as a writer, and a two to ten shift, most likely, as an editor, because papers need to get printed overnight. If it's a weekly or a monthly print mag, there will be a few days with relative freedom to do interviews and such, and then a few days of crunch time. If they work for a news website they will have a desk job and most likely work in shifts. TV and radio news people are the ones doing most of the running around to get quotes, but they are also on the tightest of schedules.
Speaking of schedules. Unless the character is a blogger, they won't finish an article and immediately rush it to the printer/publish it. Reputable news sources have, at the very least, a copy editor to check for mistakes and typos. Bigger newspapers and magazines and sites have a dedicated fact checker.
Very VERY few papers in the world have full time photographers on the payroll. If your character is a photographer, they will most likely be a freelancer and do corporate events or weddings on the side (sorry Peter Parker). What happens is, a medium will decide in advance which article or interview will require a picture, and book a photographer for that piece.
Any other pictures tend to come from news agencies. Think Reuters or Associated Press. These sort of agencies do use full time photographers, as well as freelancers who happen to visit an event. They'll take like two hundred picture and sell them to the agency, who distributes them to media all over the world.
Few media have the money for correspondents, so they'll pick only a handful. This means a foreign correspondent has a large area to cover. European news media tend to have one correspondent in the US, covering the Entire US, for instance. American media tend to have more moneys, but if your character is a respondent in, say India, expect them to trek along India a lot, because they're prob the only one in that vast country.
Having said that, coverage, especially war coverage, is super expensive. If they're sending a journo to a war zone, it will absolutely not be a rookie. They will have proven themselves capable, preferably speak the language and they'll be Very Prepared. Think local guides, vast networks of informants etc. A startling amount of war reporters and investigative journalists are also freelance. If they are trekking through a jungle and come across anything exciting, you bet they'll try to sell that story in several angles/versions to different media.
Have you considered:
Bread and Butter Freelancers: It's a gig economy my friends. Freelance writey people don't have a boss and usually work from home or from some coffee shop. If they are to be successful (enough to make a living), they'll still have a beat, and will actually have to be fairly good at this subject. Since these characters make their own shifts, they do have the ability to go out in the middle of the day to do superheroing or witchery or to investigate the disappearance of their best friend. Upsides: Freedom. Downsides: Usually very little money. Unstable hours, like one day nothing and then a week of 14 hour days. The crushing stress of looming deadlines ànd job insecurity.
Copywriters: The people that write the text on corporate websites, that fill mail order catalogues with entries for every picture, compose newsletters for various organisations, turn technical instructions into actually mildly readable user manuals. Upside: money. If they're good at it, they will have a fairly stable income. They have the same freedom as freelancers to go flirt with flower shop assistants. Downside: the crushing knowledge that with every piece you write, your soul sinks deeper into the void. Anyone who's ever read clientsfromhell will know what to expect of their clientele.
Lay-outers: The creative side of making media. The bros making the graphs, putting the text to paper,  photoshoping the head of Putin onto the body of a baby, whatever. Upside: artist character. This is a slightly more realistic character than the 'painter'. They're creative, but they have yet to sell their soul to the corporate machine (depending on the medium you put them in, of course). Downside: this is basically a desk job with stable hours.
Cameraman, sound technician: the people that hang out with the news reporter and trot all over the region with him/her. Upside: see the world! Without being instantly recognizable. Downside: they're probably stuck in their mission and they rarely have the power to go 'hey, let's investigate over there'.

 Software development
General tips
There's actually a few different environments for software engineers to work.
Start-ups: the hip one. Think Silicon Valley, the upstarts in sneakers and Star Wars t-shirts living on pizza and red bull and basically coding 20 hours a day. Depending on where they are in the growth of their start-up, these people will be nearly alone, or have a team of coworkers. Traditionally, start-ups start with like a founder (or four) and an idea, and some coding. As the company grows they'll hire a sales person to sell this stuff, a marketing manager to brand it, a support person to troubleshoot it, an HR person, etc.
A very Very VERY large part of start-up business is pitching, aka selling your premise to a bunch of venture capitalists and investors. It's Dragon's Den. Literally. Your super shy, autism spectrum character who hates public speaking and who can't even look at another person without blushing would make a super crappy start-up founder by themselves. They will definitely need their bubbly, motivational speaker best friend. On the other hand: this is an amazing environment for that suave, smooth talking character who could sell sand in the desert.
Second environment: corporate. The vast majority of software engineers out there just work for some big company. These are the people building and deploying management system software for banks, installing security in factories, that sort of thing. A lot of the time they're consultants. They wear a suit. They use something called the Waterfall method, which sucks out your soul, or the Agile method, which also sucks out your soul. There's a lot of managing and meeting and progress reports. If they're good enough, they're allowed to leave the tie at home.
Software needs to be tested. You don't just write the code last minute and put it live.
The coders are absolutely not the only people in a software development team. There's the project managers, the designers, the copywriters, the testers, the lawyers, oh god, the lawyers, etc.
Software Needs to be tested. It takes ages. I cannot stress this enough. It usually happens in India or some other Asian country where the wages are lower.
Will a lot of environments, even corporate, allow their creatives to come to work in like… jeans and a t-shirt, the only people realistically allowed to actually act like teenagers, in any environment (corporate, start-up, small business), are the ones with skills that are very hard to find. In essence: security experts and specifically white hat hackers. Yes, you're allowed to have a hacker character that acts dumb and comes to work in his pyjamas and it will be realistic that he does not get fired. Your clerk character that's super rude and deals in hurtful quips? Not so much.
SOFTWARE NEEDS TO BE TESTED
 Have you considered:
Researchers: you know those people that made a song that can give Alexa commands without the owner knowing? Those are university researchers. A lot of really cool stuff is being developed not by office workers, but at universities. This includes software. Upside: probably a looser environment, with a lot of young people. Downside: you're basically writing a college AU.
Venture capitalists: in a Silicon Valley environment, this is basically the 'wealthy businessman' stereotype of old. The dragons in the dragon's den, the people that traipse around the city talking to people and assessing the potential of their pitch, before throwing money at them (or not). There's a bunch of paperwork, but they probably have a small army of accountants to handle this.
Evangelists: the cool people that hold TED talks. They usually work for a big tech company, as a specialist, and part of their job is to be a spokesperson.  A good example of this is the tech researcher, who has a day job finding nasty hackers or viruses, and who also blogs about that and holds talks and presentations about securing your business. A character like this has the advantage of being a deep tech nerd hacker type. They're rarely the CEO, so they can go deep into the coding, while also travelling places and meeting crowds of press or business people.
Project managers: these don't tend to do the actual coding, but they do, well, the managing. Characters like this will be more social and creative, they're the ones making the reports and presenting their progress to the CEO, and they're the ones troubleshooting when stuff goes wrong. In general, there's a lot of planning involved.

 Bakeries/Catering
General tips
Mass production of food is gruelling. You think you're writing about your sexy pastry chef and how they're carefully, tip of their tongue peeking through their lips, putting a cherry on top of that little moeilleux, but in reality, there's two hundred more to finish on this rack alone and they need to be done in under an hour.
Say it with me, people: baking is a night job. Industrial baking, mom-and-pop rural French bakery, bagel shop, donuts. Someone is going to be making all that stuff before the first customer arrives and that someone is slaving in front of a hot oven at four in the morning.
Any type of catering is a time management business. You know this. You've all watched Great British Bake-off (or, like, Chopped or whatever). If your professional cake maker is only working on one project/wedding at a time, they're not going to be in business for long. Your line chef will be plating up several dishes per minute. Your short order cook is baking six pancakes and scrambling eggs at the exact same time.
Unless it's a very large kitchen, the people that cook are the same ones that clean. And since it's food prep, there is a lot of cleaning.
Have you considered:
Recipe writer: ok so we're kinda back to media but big tv chefs don't make all those recipes themselves. Someone, usually a freelancer, writes them and tests them. Imagine someone getting the request to develop a seasonal cronut recipe that involves peaches and charcoal, because it's hip, and then baking several batches until they find something edible. This is a somewhat realistic environment for your super creative baker to live in a small house and make some money while also working on a book on the side, and falling in love with the quirky … goat… herd… brewer, florist, whatever.

REFLECTIVE SUMMARY
Throughout my first year of university I found myself lacking motivation within the units that we had to do, which made me produce work of a quality that I knew I could do better at, I found that the units that we done weren’t of a great interest to me and when I don’t find interest in to my work I won’t put as much effort as I would in contrast. I also had a lot of personal issues in my life involving my friend passing which affected me mentally which also had an effect on my university attendance. From all of this I took it as a lesson to be learned for second year and to have a more positive approach and a better mindset when it comes to work. I have found that this unit has been the best project that I have done so far that I have managed to enjoy and stay motivated without force. I prepared ahead in the summer before starting second year to pick which brand I was going to use for my film, which didn’t leave me having to think within the first few weeks in at university. Learning from last year’s mistakes, I ensured that would keep myself organised by following weekly tasks as well as using and following my project management plan to help assist with anything I didn’t get to do that week. Knowing that the aim of the task was direct and edit the film ourselves, I was 50/50 on wanting to film it myself due to photography being my weak point as I have never been confident with the camera due to not trying to use it. However, long term academic goals for the year at university was to make sure I try things out of my comfort zone and to challenge myself better. So, I pushed myself and said to myself that I was going to do it. It was essential for me to understand the works of the camera and to get comfortable using it, so I made sure I attended every workshop that Colin provide to enable myself to get valuable information and the help required from it. I documented all the knowledge I learnt on. Research blog to look back on if I needed a recap on something. Being able to document our research on a blog is such a blessing as it saves more time for us alongside money which every student appreciates. Using Tumblr as way to project our research was a good choice due it being a popular networking site of our generation of today, therefore, me, myself who was very in to Tumblr years ago, still knows how to work it effortlessly without any trouble. I found that the only problem using Tumblr was that posts would get flagged for unnecessary reasons which meant you had to appeal for your posts to be kept on your page. This could cause problems if your research gets rejected and you are unable to retrieve it back. To improve on this for the upcoming year twos would be to use another blogger site such as WordPress which will eliminate the construction of flagging. It is very simple and easy to use just like Tumblr and is also free. When it came to the formative review, I was very on edge to see what Piers and Colin would think of my idea, however the feedback came very positive, the only concern was with Colin with the lighting and the settings on my film, as if I wasn’t to achieve the right lighting my film wouldn’t look the way I want it to. He told me “work hard to make the scene look natural in documentary as it is not easy to do, make sure the camera is on manual focus as the auto settings will not make the lighting natural” Everything he said made perfect sense I took on board on everything that was said by him. I did this by ensuring I filmed on a day where there was a grey overcast so they it provided the musky cloudy lighting. I then changed the settings on the camera to cloudy to also provide that grey image, I also brought the ISO down so that the camera focus made it darker to fit the mood and it worked perfectly. Another important point he made was “There is so much more going on at a rave that you might not be able to control”. This was something I always knew was going to be an issue due to a person who attends raves a lot I know how busy it can be. I made sure we got to the event early on when I knew it wouldn’t be as busy to enable more space to get enough footage of my model dancing. Within that time though it still got relatively busy. However, my friend who was dj’ing at the event allowed us to access the VIP room which gave me more time to film in a room with more space. This allowed me to experiment a bit more on the angles and view of filming. From Piers points, one I took in to action was “What points are you making, Is there a story behind it?”. Even though I had the research and rationale to state the meaning behind the film, if it wasn’t projected out from my film then it would have been pointless, so I made sure that the story behind it made sense by creating a narrative script which would be voiced over the film to gain a better understanding. The voice over was in polish due to the brand being polish. I felt that my story telling skills came to use and I was able to create something that was very effective, yet emotional at the same time. During post production I was able to master my skills in editing by putting my ideas in to creation. Having Simon and Chrissy every other week was beneficial as it allowed us to have two different people help in things that one of them couldn’t help us in. however due to many people wanting help, which would make Simon and Chrissy spend a lot of time with individuals led to me myself finding out how to do stuff via the internet, which I also felt in essence was a good thing to do as it saved me time having to wait and also saved their time having to come and help me. I now feel like I have excelled in editing and would definitely like to continue this as one of my talents in the career field. Having a study buddy to help support each other’s work was a beneficial way to help motivate each other and produce quality work. Having this task allowed you to build your communication skills alongside team building. I worked with my good friend Yasmin and due to having the same work ethic we managed to complete the work effectively, I feel like effectively working independently whilst having support on the side allows you work successfully. Yasmin’s main focus on her film was within PR and marketing, even thought she had a good amount of knowledge within marketing due to doing business at secondary school, me having knowledge in PR and marketing helped benefit for her film, I helped her to make sure the aesthetic that her brand has linked to her film and made sure it would match the audience etc; Yasmin also helped me within my film with the scripting ensuring that my grammar and everything was perfect for when it came to my polish narrator to translate it that it wouldn’t be a problem, this was very helpful for me as I am not as academic in contrast to Yasmin. Overall, I have found that the communication between the tutors and students this years has been amazing. MYUCA email, has been the best route for communication that Pier’s regularly uses to send us any important information. All tutors have been supportive by replying to emails effectively and continuously telling us to ask any questions regarding their work which shows us that they really do want us to do well. The handbook this year is definitely better in contrast to last year, it had everything that we needed for the project without anything missing for us to find out halfway through the project like last year which made it 10 x easier. To conclude, unit 5001 and 5002 have both allowed me to express my creativity without any limits which has allowed me to do work of my expression, this has allowed me to become more confident within my work and I believe that the quality of work I have done has been done with the help of the project management plan, my organisation and skills alongside the tutor’s support. I am happy with start of second year and I hope that this positivity and success can continue to prosper throughout the rest of the academic year.
