BOOK REVIEW: THE LAST CORINTHIAN by Mike Thompson (2023)

THE LAST CORINTHIAN details THE CRICKETING LIFE of MJK SMITH or Mike to his friends. In fact, this new book from PITCH PUBLISHING draws on extensive interviews with Mike, plus contains the entertaining views of ex-team-mates and opponents, many of whom Smith counts as friends, and in good humour: not just from the cricketing world as Captain of England, Mike Smith was also a English rugby international (1956).

The term Corinthian basically means having the highest standards of sportsmanship, essentially amateur values later made professional standards: good conduct and fair play, in short. 

Experienced author, Mike Thompson, brings this Corinthian theme out very well, beyond the book title, with the orderly way he builds the architecture of THE LAST CORINTHIAN with 27 pillars, or chapters, complimented with structured paragraphs and pages (288). Apparently, the book idea was put to Smith only last year, with the pairing’s first meeting in 1955 - you see , a lifelong cricket fan, Thompson played the same game.

Picture sections have many pleasant photos to back up the prose and overall Thompson has produced a highly readable hardback, which also includes fascinating batting & bowling stats from key Test Matches of the 1960s.

Touring is never boring as described here, as the wonderful writing captures the thrill of it all, with every throw or thwack.

The photo session with MJK & Rollins was for a duel interview they did back in '94, I think. Tool opened for Rollins Band and then Henry performed on "Bottom."
