Miraculous Enemies AU fanfic recs

So I was just thinking about one of my favorite Miraculous tropes, enemies au. Whether it's Marinette getting the wrong idea about Adrien from the beginning of school, or Chat being cajoled into working for his father, I adore most fics with these tropes, and I'm betting that a lot of other people do as well, so here's a list of some good ones for people to peruse!

Note: I am only listing fics that are currently completed, so you don't have to fear any of these being abandoned. They are in no particular order (or rather, they're in the order in which I was able to track them down in for this list).

I'm currently reading time travel fics for a rec list, and a really common trope is Marinette/Ladybug seeing future!Chat and losing her mind over how hot he is.

And there's nothing wrong with that trope because, let's face it, Chat IS going to grow up to be hot af

But it also ignores that Chat is ALREADY hot af. 14 year old Adrien is 14 year old Marinette's idea of physical perfection. She's just in denial when it comes to Chat. (Because of reasons.)

So I just feel like Marinette wouldn't get an immediate nosebleed upon seeing future!Chat?

Give me Marinette begrudgingly admitting (but only to herself) that Chat is KIND OF good looking. Maybe. A little bit. And being PISSED about it. Like how DARE that stupid cat grow up to be attractive?? Ugh, he's probably so smug about it too!

And then she's snapping at him even more than usual and Chat has no idea what he did wrong 😂

The lovely thing about the Lovesquare, is just how many insane identity shenanigans can result from these two people. In fact, there are so many identity shenanigans between them that I've begun to pile them into archetypes, so now I have to wonder:

Definitions:

The "OG"- Just the plain ol' confused, but endearing lovesquare (included in this are any power-ups or kwami swaps)

The "Snekmouse"- A situation where they know the identity of the other, but they don't know they know and have to act like they don't know. Yes, they are idiots.

The "Lovewalker"- They are both multiple layers into a secret identity and are secretly missing the person, who is in actuality, sitting right next to them(can alternatively be known as the "Ladywalker if just a one-sided facade)

The "Secret Acts of Service"- They secretly deliver gifts (barrettes, scarfs, etc.) and/or do acts of service (telling off Lila, Chloe, etc.) without the other person knowing because they love, they're such good friends 🥰

The "Super-Civilian"- They, as a civilian must interact with, and fight alongside with their superhero partner, although this time using different powers, and with varying success. They often use this time to distance themselves from their hero identity.

The "Inter-Universal Square"- "Is this girl who is flirting with me, my lady? She kinda looks like her-" They are interacting, with some alternate universe/timeline version of themselves and/or with their partner, varying results ensue.

The "They Never Met"- Any situation where these two didn't meet according to the original timeline. They could have not have met as civilians, only one of them could have gotten a miraculous, or they could have never interacted as superheroes. This can include several enemy aus, as they never really knew each other.

The "Chat Blanc"- Though this can arguably fit into the "inter-universal square", this holds distinction as it includes any scenario with akumatization. This can include any situation in which either of them, under any identity, get akumatized and then fight and/or interact with the other.

in all honesty, I think the four sides of the lovesquare are tied to me

Ladynoir - because of their banter, their partnership, they have each other as the superhero duo and Ladybug slowly falling for Chat is always *chef's kiss*

Marichat - because of their easy friendship, the hurt/comfort, they understand each other from a lot of different things and don't question much and both know unrequited love

Adrienette - Adrien is oblivious af but loves Mari all the same, he's always amazed by her and protects her at all cost, and even tho Mari can be obsessive sometimes, she really does care for Adrien a lot and listens to him

Ladrien - they are cute af, always flustered and trying not to act how they're used to act with each other, they love each other madly and trust each other implicitly and seriously they're cute af

if I really had to pick one I guess I'd choose marichat bc at the beginning that was my favorite and bc I relate more to developing feelings after getting to know someone real good, never been in love with someone I just met or barely know, so there you go 😅

(now that i think about it that's also maybe why I tend to also read a lot of ladynoir, I guess those two would be my favorites, I identify with Marinette slowly falling for Chat once she gets to know him lol)

mmmmmmm. MMMMMM. okay. there might be some recency bias in this, but in no particular order:

liededamp - as much as i meme it up myself i feel like i did manage to have some good character discussions in it and wrestle some real emotion within it as a crackfic, and i think it's resonated with some people a lot actually, which makes me very glad.

tried to touch you but you're cutthroat (stay to see it unfold) - obviously there was going to be a chloe(luka)-centric thing in this list because yes. i'm pretty satisfied with how the theming turned out in this one and my character work on chloe as well.

now this one sits here (whispers things to me) - also obviously there had to be an adrien piece there, and this is?? maybe my most popular one?? even though it's technically love square-focused. i spent like 20 mins trying to pick from the others and couldn't, and i am quite proud of that summary (and the rest of it, but the summary i think i did very effectively) and yes.

did you ever want it? (did you ever fight it?) - one-sided fabian pov fabriz fic. this one also really resonated with people who read it/seemed to leave an impression, and not just bc of the ship but a bunch of other things i put there, and i love fabian and it was so fun exploring the way i see his character and how he'd handle pining for his best friend, and i think i managed to pull off the theming around the five stages of grief reasonably well, so?? i'm happy with it.

saint, bastard, king - grisha fic where it's just. idk man something about the kaz/alina/nikolai (potential) dynamic makes the cogs in my brain turn. the way they're all leaders in their different ways and how they operate in different worlds but then they intersect and it's so??? fascinating to me??? but yeah i worked hard on this trying to figure out how to convey it and i think i managed to quite well??

ok yeah this was very difficult just because i do like?? a lot of my work?? like i always look at it and spot something to edit but overall i enjoy reading it and i'm happy with it and yes. i would've added circumscribe, eight-two-five (my kipps-centric l&co fic) as well bc it's the longest character-study/backstory/one-shot thing i've done and i'm very happy with it, but yes. oh look i did it anyway-

Cosmically wrong. What the fuck. Why would she take Hawkmoth's name? Why would he keep his abusive father's name???

So. Is anyone ready to talk about Marinette's actions in Elation vs. Chat Noir's choice to stop the kiss?

I don't meant this to be a salt post towards Marinette or anything. I genuinely just think it's an interesting difference that can tell us more about their characters and their personal mental and emotional states.

Because both Chat Noir and Marinette knew they were hiding important information from each other.

Marinette had just heard Chat Noir say he wasn't in love with Ladybug anymore, just the same as Chat Noir heard her say she wasn't in love with Adrien.

Maybe admitting her admiration and affection in her civilian form and seeing that he was thinking of her in her civilian form felt honest enough for the moment. Idk. But she still knows she's Ladybug. And she still started the kissy-kissy-meow-meow anyway. And didn't want to stop even when the secret identities thing was pointed out.

Only Chat Noir stopped the kiss. Maybe it felt more deceptive on his part because of the mask. Obviously she knows she can't know who he is. And obviously he has no reason to believe she has a secret identity, And since she claims to be a super "fan" clearly he sees himself as the only one at fault. Because he doesn't even realize she's his best friend and partner... And then we all learn that with Monarch out there, she's more at risk to public exposure... so that's important to note.

Maybe Marinette figured that Chat loved Ladybug once and now he's into her without the mask, and if it's all the same, who cares? Meanwhile it's possible Adrien figured that if she didn't like him as Adrien anymore, then surely she wouldn't love Chat Noir either if she knew he was the same. Not to mention the whole "fan" thing.

Still Marinette was willing to kiss Chat Noir anyway. And Adrien as Chat Noir was not. And I love them both for it.

I for one, am very excited that the special will be taking place around the time of the episode destruction

I’m happy for the ladynoir stans who will get to see more interaction and affectionate scenes

I’m happy for the adrinette stans who will get to relive the denial stage of early season 5

I’m happy for the marichat stans who will get to return to the mutual pining arc of the first half of the season

But most of all, I’m happy for the Ladrien stans, who once more get to look forward in denial to a scene will definitely happen this time
