Fandom Year in Review Asks - 1, 11, 13, 21, 25 😊

Fandom Year in Review 

1. Favorite fictional characters this year. 

Mary Poppins is probably the latest fave of my 2018. I saw Mary Poppins Returns the day after Christmas. Emily Blunt was just simply incredible in it, I’m still SHOOK. 

June Osbourne in the Handmaid’s Tale is definitely a character who really stands out to me. My lord, I admire June’s strength so much, I don’t know how she does it. Seeing her deal with her pregnancy in Gilead, was probably my favorite thing about all of last season. To see her love for her kids shine so brightly throughout is always such a heart warming thing to witness. I’m a sucker for soft parent-child things so. I love (1) badass mom. 

Can’t forget about June’s boy, Nick Blaine. He too is such an amazing character in his own right. I really enjoyed the character development he had this past season. Max did such a great job with all of it. I loved seeing everything with him, from his struggles. To seeing his softer side that we really saw at the end of season 1 continue in season 2, especially in regard to June and the baby. 

Gotta include Steve Rogers and Peggy in here as well because they are my forever faves. Seeing the compass make a comeback in the endgame trailer had me soaring! 

11. Biggest squee moment of the year. 

Nick, June and their baby daughter in the nursery. Literally the most beautiful thing I witnessed this past year. I don’t think I’ll ever be over it. 

This scene alone made my entire year! 

13. Favorite villain of the year 

Hmmm. The creatures in A Quiet Place creeped me out BIG TIME so I think I’ll go with them lol. 

And since I’ve been in a Harry Potter mood lately. I’m going to say Bellatrix Lestrange as well. 

21. Overall favorite fandoms of the year 

The Steggy fandom as always 

The Handmaid’s Tale fandom, especially that of fellow Nick x June fans.

I really loved my proper introduction into the Wondertrev fandom. Obviously, I’ve loved Wondertrev since Wonder Woman came out. My friend Mara @stevedianas encouraged me to join in on their Secret Santa. I’m so glad I did! I really want to became more involved with that fandom this year. 

25. Fandom predictions for next year 

I don’t even know what to predict for next season of the Handmaid’s Tale lol other than I can definitely see Luke finding out about Nick x June. And I really hope to see more scenes with Rita, Nick and June working together. 

As for the Marvel fandom we’re definitely going to be yelling when Captain Marvel comes out!

1. Song of the year?

The song I probably listened to most this year was either The Wreck of Our Hearts by Sleeping Wolf or The Night We Met by Lord Huron.

5. TV show of the year?

So I got into two really good shows this year: The Handmaid’s Tale and American Horror Story so I would have to say it’s a tie between those two.

7. Favorite actor of the year?

Honestly I’ve got to give it to Cody Fern. He was amazing in AHS: Apocalypse and I loved him! 

14. Favorite book you read this year?

The Devil in The White City by Erik Larson. It took me awhile to get into it but it was so good. As an avid history fan and a lover of all things weird, this book about the Chicago World’s Fair & America’s First Serial Killer, HH Holmes, was so interesting to read & I learned a lot of random little tidbits that I didn’t know about American History.

19. What’re you excited about for next year?

I’m just really hoping that next year is better than this one. 2018 has been one of the hardest years ever, a lot has changed in my life this year so I’m really just hoping that 2019 brings more happiness, hope, and positivity. 

22. Favorite place you visited this year?

I actually didn’t go anywhere exciting this year, but my favorite place is definitely just being home.

Nick + June Tag Game

 What’s your favorite Nick & June scene?

My fav is in season 1, episode 6 when Nick knocks on June’s door and then grabs her waist as she’s about to walk past him, pushes her against the wall, stares at her lips for a second and then kisses her like he isn’t about to send her off to the Commander’s office. That was very detailed right? lol I just live for that scene, also June totally puts her hands down Nick’s pants before walking away! I love a secret, doomed romance and this scene shows them at the beginning of their relationship when June finally has something of her own for the first time in years, and of course having a secret lover can be hot! lol They have this amazing connection and the start of their love story is so powerful and sexy and obviously terrifying since we know what could happen. Nick seems so lonely and depressed when we see his flashbacks and June has had everything taken from her, so seeing them together like this makes me happy.

I also love the scene in the finale where June FINALLY tells Nick she loves him. He’s holding their baby and she gets close to him and says it, it’s the perfect moment. It’s so romantic and sweet, and after everything they’ve both been through it’s beautiful to see their little family together.

Which scene between them did you find most heartbreaking?

This one is hard, but probably the scene where June gets to see the baby and starts leaking when she hears her cry. It’s so freaking horrible to see them in the same room with their baby, not able to hold her OR each other while that monster looms over them with her in his arms. I cried so hard during that scene for all three of them, June didn’t deserve to be humiliated on top of everything else going on, it was beyond heartbreaking. And Nick was standing there knowing he couldn’t do anything to protect his family except be silent and hope for the best. 

There is also a really sad, heartbreaking feeling I get in season 2 ep 5 when Nick pushes back the veil and sees Eden’s face and when he finds June bleeding out in the rain. First of all that entire episode is heartbreaking, but when all of these grown men see their wives faces for the first time and June and the audience see child brides it’s so shocking and unsettling. Nick looks sad and almost fearful and June looks like her heart is broken.

And of course we watch Nick’s own heart breaking when he sees the woman he loves pregnant and bleeding out in the rain. There’s also something almost hopeful about it, even though Nick is married and has new responsibilities we know he can still be there for June. That scene was so powerful and I love Max’s acting throughout, he smokes his cigarette in the rain and looks up at the door in this resigned way, bracing himself for his new life with a teenage wife, then he’s suddenly turning around and screaming for help as he finds June and holds her close to him. He doesn’t get enough praise for his acting in this episode.

Other than Nick or June, who is your favorite character on the show?

Aunt Lydia! lol I know that’s a bad answer, but I’m just so obsessed with her and her motivations. I see her as a cult member and I’ve always been very interested and attracted to cults, I also spent years in an evangelical christian school (I wasn’t in the religion btw)  and got to see close up how crazy some of the true believers are...and she is definitely a True Believer! Aunt Lydias can really happen in America and I see her as someone I could know, I believe that she believes in EVERYTHING Gilead stands for, she’s not a fake and I love and hate her equally for that. You can tell she really cares about the girls in her own fucked up way and wants the best for them.

8. What do you label yourself as?

Usually when I get this question I either go with my Myers-Briggs Personalty Type - INTJ or my Hogwarts house - Ravenclaw. 

11. Favorite age you’ve been so far?

That’s a good question. So far 27 has sucked big time, Honestly though I would have to go with either 18/19 or 23/24. 

21. If you were the opposite sex for one day, what would you look like and what would you do?

I have honestly never thought about this before. I suppose I would want to be attractive so nice hair and eyes, tall - definitely would want to be tall because I am short and it sucks. As for what I would do, I honestly don’t have a clue. I guess I would just experiment and see if being a man in today’s world really is that much easier than being a woman [duh we all know it is], but it would be interesting to see the difference in how men and women are treated first hand. 

26. You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, but you have to leave immediately. Where are you going to go?

United Kingdom and Ireland. This was the easiest answer ever. I have always wanted to visit London, Scotland, and Ireland and if someone gave me a free ticket, I would be there heartbeat. 

48. Do you hold grudges?

Kinda. I only hold grudges on people who have done something I find completely unforgivable. So it takes a lot for me to get to that point, but once it’s there it’s hard for me to get over it.

A few questions for all my fellow Nick & June shippers: 1.) What's your favorite Nick & June scene? 2.) Which scene between them did you find most heartbreaking? 3.) Other than Nick or June, who is your favorite character on the show?

Thanks so much for this ask, Allison. If I may, with your permission, convert this to an ask game (tag people) so we can get more opinions from fellow shippers :)

1. Favourite Osblaine scene - it will be the one with June in false labour, when they walk up the stairs to the Waterfords’. When I watched the script-to-screen video they released of S2, the “awwwww” expression was PLASTERED across my face the whole time. It felt truly like their moment. And when June gets off the ambulance, Nick takes one look at her and she says, “I’m okay.” I think it marked the beginning of when they started understanding each other’s facial expressions, that comfort level dialled up a notch, like, I don’t need you to tell me what you’re feeling now, I know that look and I here’s my answer to your question. I think it was a very sweet moment between the two.

2. Most heartbreaking Osblaine scene - I’m sure that there are a couple of other glaringly obvious heart-breaking scenes between the two (June bleeding out and Nick crying for help or Nick getting married, etc.), but my favourite one is a subtler moment in 2x06, where June asks Nick to sleep with Eden lest she, June, loses him. Two things happen here: a) for some reason, I always thought that Nick was a little more vulnerable of the two while June put on a strong face, but this was THE FIRST TIME she spoke her mind out to him, she said, “I can’t lose you.” Having her make Nick break the one resolution he’d made to himself in that moment broke my heart a little. b) Nick said I love you FOR THE FIRST TIME and she didn’t say it back, she couldn’t say it back, so that also broke my heart a little. Such canon moments deserve more recognition :)

3. Favourite character other than Osblaine - I’d say Moira, but that absolutely doesn’t invalidate my love for every single character on the show, they all bring their own individuality, flavour, charisma, and impact and that makes for tough competition in my feeble mind :)

Nick & June Tag Game!

1.) What’s your favorite Nick & June scene?

Honestly there are so many! How do I choose just one?!? But if I have to, I think I have to pick the scene in 1x10 when June tells him that she’s pregnant. That scene is just so full of emotion: fear, anxiety, apprehension, shock, happiness, joy, love. I just love how she thinks it’s this awful thing but he reassures her that it’s not because this is THEIR baby and OF COURSE this is an amazing thing! And it’s just a beautiful moment and it really shows that they’re in this together no matter what Gilead puts them through, no matter what devious plan the Waterford’s come up with - it’s them against the world. They’re a family now and neither of them are alone in this place anymore. 

2.) Which scene between them did you find most heartbreaking?

Most heartbreaking. I mean we all know this show isn’t all fun and games and happy endings and these two have their fair share of sad moments, but the one that sticks out most to me is the scene in 2x12 after Eden and Isaac’s execution and June tries to comfort Nick but he just walks away. There’s just so much about that scene that made me genuinely sad for them because here they are two broken people in this screwed up world, just trying to stay alive and this girl, this child, is thrown into the mix who neither of them really paid much attention to and then they see her executed for the one thing they have actually been given in this cruel world - someone to love and someone who loves you back. And it’s just so sad to see that in the one moment where they both need comfort and reassurance, they can’t be that person for each other - not right then, not after these events, not after seeing what this place does to people, to children. I think, again, it’s just another scene with so many emotions, and Elisabeth and Max play those emotional bits so well, but I think of all of their scenes, that one was the saddest to me.

3.) Other than Nick or June, who is your favorite character on the show?

Oh man there are so many! I think I honestly have to say Rita. I’m so intrigued by her and I want to know so much more about her backstory and the network of Martha’s. I feel like there is so much that can be done with her character and so much we don’t know that I’m just excited to see where they take it in Season 3.
