One thing I wish more abled people understood is that even with accommodations disabled people often struggle with finding and maintaining employment. A lot of workplace policies cater to abled people and the assumption that no one will ever be sick. For example , I just started a new job and will probably be terminated due to the fact that within the first 90 days of employment, a person can only call off 3 days. I believe it gets bumped up to 6 after that in an 8 month period? A doctor's note does not excuse it either. One of my call off days was used for surgery and recovery.
In other words , even for an otherwise healthy person, they expect them not to have any issues pop up that could require them to take an extended period of time off. "Oh, you broke your leg this morning?" I'm sorry you still have to come to work, or it counts against you, and you could face termination.
I, as a disabled person, get told to "stop being lazy and find a job," and these are the policies I'm expected to conform to.

Q: Accessible Garden Beds
Hey y'all,
I'm putting together a set of three table/garden beds for the Special Education classroom at my school. We're planning on putting Trax mats below it for wheelchairs, but I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for it's design!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've worked with the teacher for measurements, but want to double check the height will be alright.
Warmly,

Doctor Beverly Crusher @SpaceDocMom Many wheelchair users can move their legs, so just because you see someone in a wheelchair do so doesn't mean they don't need that mobility device. Some can even stand or walk but the chair alleviates pain from doing so. Spread the word about ambulatory wheelchair users! emojis: black heart, blue heart, masked, wheelchair 1:45 PM · Dec 5, 2023

By the way, I have mostly used my cane for indoor walking since I got it, and no, it's not a long way from my office to the kitchen. But when my knees are screaming, it sure fucking feels like it.
And you know what the cane does? It lets me better use the energy resources I have so at the end of the day I'm not fucking fatigued to hell and back because moving around was an absolute nightmare.
So, if you think to yourself, "Well, I don't really NEED a cane for my pain; I don't move all that much." GET THE FUCKING CANE.
(And consider getting it from fashionablecanes.com, which has a lot of great fucking designs but also lots of awesome search filters so you can really narrow down your scope if you have several qualifications.)

Hi there, Does anyone have a pair of M+D combo stix they’re willing to sell off?
I know I dont post much on here but I am in need of a pair of forearm crutches. I have FND which has caused me to have paralytic episodes and has also caused a lot of degradation of functionality in my right foot (so much so that i’ve started to need to stilt the toes on said foot because theyve begun to curl into themselves)
Reason I want the combo stixs specifically is because their unique ability to change modes and I think that they would be a good fit for me. Also because they’re very well built and I dont want to have to rebuy crutches for at least a few years because crutches are expensive and I am poor. I’ll also take other crutches that have similar functions to the combo stixs
I’m willing to pay up to the original seller’s price for the crutches, but a lower price will be extremely appreciated because once again, I am poor
If you’re willing to sell to me plz dm me so we can talk about it, thank you so very much for your time and I hope you have a good day

Survey for Past and Present Wheelchair Users
Hello, I am a university student that is part of a group looking to improve certain aspects of manual wheelchairs. We have created a survey for both manual and electric wheelchair users to learn about some of their likes and dislikes, wants and needs, and more about their experiences. Due to all the red tape around this project, I can only reveal so much but rest assured this survey is intended for educational purposes to better understand user experiences and to identify areas of improvement for manual and power-assisted wheelchairs. The survey is composed of 15 questions, many of them being multiple choice with a few short response questions. The estimated time of completion is 6-8 minutes. If you are a current or past wheelchair user and have a few minutes to spare, our team would greatly appreciate your input on your experience with a manual or electric wheelchair! Thank you in advance! https://forms.microsoft.com/r/fJZx2hC7MV

Hey, I have a few ideas bonking around in my head but I need some feedback, specifically from disabled people who have some sort of pyshical aid device (canes, insulin pumps, mobility aids, anything that you have to psychically have for your disability).
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they would appreciate aesthetic choices for their aids. Like for example, for insulin pens, aesthetic and cool insulin pen holders. I've been thinking of making those for a while, at least for myself, but I'm wondering what else I could try and make for other disabled folks. Maybe cane grips that look cool? Neat pillows for wheelchairs and walkers? I'm not sure, but I'd love to hear what other people want and think.
I'm just tired of everything relating to my disability never matching my style. I'm goth, I want something vampire-y to hold my needles, not professional, or one color, or bright, or pastels.

Hello! In my stories, I have characters who use mobility devices. I was wondering if people ever give names to their mobility devices like wheelchairs and prosthesis. Also, if people do name their prosthesis, do they carry the name over when they get replacements or does each one have its own name? Thank you!
Hi!! I definitely wouldn’t say that it’s universal or even particularly common, but there are totally some people who like to name their mobility aids. I’ve named one or two of my white canes (and then promptly forgotten lol), and I’ve met other people who get more into it than me and love to name every single one.
As for whether people prefer to give each new device a new name or carry the same name over to each new device, that is entirely up to personal preference. Personally I like giving new devices new names, and I haven’t yet met another person who likes to keep the same name, but some people might prefer to keep the same name. That will totally vary from person to person.

The downside to getting a cane is that it won't be feasible to drag along the rolly bag I keep my emergency illness supplies in (spare change of clothes, first aid kit with some prescription and some OTC meds, pain relief patches and ointments, pads, and, when I need to, my laptop and charger. I can't carry these in a backpack or messenger bag or large purse because my back is arguably even more fucked up than my knee and is prone to throwing out with the slightest strain and I've been flat out told by my physical therapist (and agreed upon by my rheumatologist) to never carry anything again. I sometimes use fanny packs but those aren't big enough for everything, especially the clothes. I can get a cane bag to spread the other things out, but still. The clothes issue.
Also damn. I just switched my BuJo (which is 80% medical based) to a larger padfolio format, and I wish I had bought a padfolio with a handle now so it would be easier to carry when I need to.

Doctor Beverly Crusher @SpaceDocMom Making artistic modifications to your mobility aids is a wonderful way to bring joy into your life and express yourself. I love to hand out extra lollipops to anyone who shows me their decorated devices! emojis: black heart, blue heart, masked, unicorn, sparkle 4:06 PM · Feb 15, 2024

People who "actually really need a mobility aid" aren't guaranteed to get them either. And they for sure aren't guaranteed to get one thats top of the line or even close.

Do I need to use a Wheelchair?
Do I need to use a wheelchair? How do you know you need a wheelchair? How to know you need a wheelchair? If you are asking yourself this question, then this is the video for you. For some of us who have a spinal cord injury, it can be obvious. But for others in can be a hard and difficult decision to make.
Super important points which apply as well to any other mobility aid.
