mythos au. the delanceys in this au are actually twins (marie is still older by like... three minutes), and they are both fae! specifically the scottish fae and they are super duper cool. they both live in the human world rather than with the fae. marie was a part of the seelie court, considered the kind and fair court. oscar was a part of the unseelie court, considered the tricksters and troublemakers. both courts have the tendencies that you would expect from fae, however the courts do matter when it comes to values and behaviors. oscar was banished from the fae world for reasons he refuses to talk about. marie left willingly, following her brother in his banishment.
elmer is a selkie! also specifically scottish, unsure why there are so many scottish guys in this au. selkies are typically female water spirits that have the ability to change into a seal using a seal skin that they shed every time they change between forms. this version of selkies are different than mythology, as some aspects have been changed. elmer is in college and swims for his school! his major is undeclared.
romeo is the coolest fr! he is a nykr (also named nokken (with the slashed o), nykur, naekki, etc), a scandinavian water spirit similar to the siren. typically male, these spirits are depicted as less violent than sirens in other mythology. they are shown to play the violin and lure women and children to the water. in some stories, they down their victims, in others, they are simply entertainment for humans. romeo's father was also a nykr, while his mother was human. he is a music major, and elmer's roommate.
davey is a human. there's not... much else about this. he's also in college with the group, although i'm not sure what he majors in yet. he's the lest developed character so far (aside from the very obviously unmentioned characters in this post), but expect more content from this au soon.

Powers or Paw-ers AU
It’s not like Character A WANTED to be a superhero; they were just a park ranger, for pete’s sake. There wasn’t anything that could have happened to trigger the mutation that they could remember: no spiders, no radiation, no toxic waste, nada. Up until the first time their powers came to them, they’d been (for all intents and purposes) completely normal.
That first night, Character A looked up at the full moon beaming through the window of their ranger station and felt something deep inside them begin to move and grow. Before they could think twice, they were leaping from tree to tree, enjoying the night air and never feeling so free.
The following morning, Characters B, C, and D stand dumbfounded in the front door of the ranger station, looking down at the sleeping, naked body of their co-worker, Character A, as they practically purred from the floor.
Clearly, Character A was a freaking werewolf, but no amount of convincing from Characters B, C, and D could sway their opinion on their new "superpowers." It goes without saying that the custom cape and spandex delivered from Etsy was the final straw.

THE CHANGELING BROTHERS 🗣🗣🗣
Some design notes under cut:
In mythology, changelings are humanoid creatures that have been placed by fae (broad generalized term) in place of a human child, though there are also some stories here and there of adults being taken and replaced by changelings.
Changelings, based on my limited research, only really refer to the creature left behind during some good ol cradle robbing. They are related to the fae, though. Fae, or faeries, cover a broad range of different creatures in all sorts of European mythos, however, from elves to trolls to imps. In more modern art and stories, fae are drawn as tiny little humans with bug-like wings and long, flowing hair. But there have been less flattering depictions throughout history.
Taking the origin of the mythos, and the obvious bug inspiration in the show, I've decided to redesign these two to look like impish little sprites! Changelings in my AU are smaller than the average pony, usually reaching their chin or shoulders. They have thin, flexible bodies that are protected by an exoskeleton! Their jaws are an odd mix of mammalian and insect, so they can expand and protrude their lower jaws while their upper jaw stays fixed to their skull. Their tongues are thin, based on nectar-drinking bugs and animals like butterflies and hummingbirds.
Most changelings have two wings, only Pharynx and Thorax have four wings (reformed form only.)
Pharynx is also a bit taller than the average changeling drone... Have fun imagining how tall Thorax is. Height chart coming eventually.
Their tails are loosely based on a scorpion's stinger, but I took more inspiration from cartoony imp/devil tails in art and cartoons! 😇

HI! hope your day is treating you well, i’ve been interested in doomreed for some time but cape comics are sort of daunting to me just because there’s so much content and i really don’t know where to begin. what do you suggest? thank you!
STRAIGHT OUT THE GATE ill say, read [ "My Dinner With Doom" ] (this is a rly high-qual upload, open it up on desktop!)
Tumblr media
It's a key issue oneshot with a lil bit of backstory retelling, featuring a private dinner that happens in the 00's - a good entrance point if you're curious about doomreed in summarization + generally speaking a Real Good Comic overall.
LONG POST INCOMING THIS IS A LONG POST / click readmore
the fantastic four are one of marvel's darling old founding teams so there is pretty much... endless archival, ongoing, multimedia and games content popping up all the time.
They are also kinda one of the rare teams where the growth of the characters is consistent? The kids are allowed to grow older and events from every major run are carried/referenced by the next author so if you want to do chronological there's a lot of incentive and fun stuff.
If you wanna dip your toes into the F4 as a concept, check out:
*the #1 issue of Fantastic Four By Waid & Wieringo (1997) *Mythos: Fantastic Four (2007) [ *The FF (1994) movie that is up for free on youtube!! ] *Fantastic Four (2022) by Ryan North as the current ongoing!
(Some) Singles centered on Doom/Doomreed:
*Fantastic Four (1961) Annual 2 is Doom's original backstory issue *Marvel Two-in-One (2017) by Zdarsky issue #11 & Annual #1 are both crazy good but they spoil big events/conclusions from previous runs if u care abt that!!! (My current fav fic came from these issues.) *Doomgate (novel) by Jeffrey Lang is a good option if you want something that is mostly prose, instead of a comic or movie
NOW BEFORE YOU JUMP AHEAD WITH ANYTHING I *am* following [ this reading guide ] which breaks down specific issues relevant to their relationship as a line through all the different authors over the years.
Tumblr media
[ There's also this 2021 guide w/ a few other story/AU highlights! The author said u can send the blog questions and theyll answer too ]
The 'Modern era' (late 90s/00s/10s/Now) Starts with Waid and McDuffie's stuff. The latter wrote My Dinner with Doom!
If you're scared by all the names, don't be - when searching for the issues, just pay attention to the year, # number & author/artist creds.
What I'm reading/liveblogging rn is Hickman's Secret wars era, generally regarded as yaoi ketamine; It's a good epic narrative entrance point if you want to jump into it, and it eventually led into this huge marvel event that changed the multiverse and even brought miles morales into the main timeline, so its BIG and it happened in multiple books - the best way to go about it is;
Pre-hickman:
Fantastic Four (1961) #551 #552 #553 ➡️ (these introduce main ideas we will touch again in secret wars)
Fantastic Four (1961) #558 to #562 ➡️
Doom appears in these too, first/last issues more heavily. Stuff here will be ref'd during the next era.
If you're having fun and want to keep reading you can! Just know that the next storyarc has gathered a largely mixed response bc..... its Millar going hammywammy....... not that necessary.......
Tumblr media
anyway when you see hickmans name in the cover STOP and
Jump to actual Hickman secret wars era:
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman: The complete collection➡️
(optional, side plot) If you like Val + Doom, read specifically; *Fantastic Four (2014) #3 & #5 + Fantastic Four Annual (2014) #1 *Agent of Asgard #6 & #7 *Avengers World (2014) #15 & #16
New Avengers (2013) ➡️ check issues on picture, or, if you're a completionist, look for 'Avengers by Jonathan Hickman; complete collection' and skim for the doom/reed relevant bits. There's a lot of characters here but this is a buildup to the big secret wars. Secret Wars (2015) ➡️ (All issues!) Infamous Iron Man (2016) ➡️bendis' doom writing is not very good but hang in there because right after him: Marvel 2-In-One (2017) ➡️ (All issues!) is a banger. Yaoi btw.
Tumblr media
You can basically read all the future/past ones as listed, or starting from the beginning of that author's period without worrying, bc they aren't as indebted to each other storywise.
You can also start somewhere else if you want or check out other single issues on the reading guides; It's not a crime! There's a lot of stuff with different takes and genres, I'm slowly chipping away at the secret wars era bc its just very thick and like a serious television drama attempt, except its also insanely funny sometimes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I'm still making my way through it so that's what I have at the moment!)

Okay okay okay so I have a VERY hot take...
I don't think the Sovereigns would like the creator. Cuz like it's more likely that the creator is the one that made humans, not the dragons before it. Because why would you create the dragons, and then later on just throw away the idea and push the dragons away when you could have created another planet to put the humans on instead, right?
Neuvi is the exception because he was reborn off on a human body and is technically created by the creator. HOWEVER, imagine that it's the dragon's authority that helps Neuvi realize the creator is the real deal. Like sure, the subtle power that they notice from the creator is there, but like with the authority itself (and being in tune with it as much as he would be when he obtains it), it would be MUCH more obvious.
That brings up the question as to why the archons aren't able to tell, and that's because of their own mind blocking it. How most people work is that whenever they think something is true, it takes a LOT to be able to like change their mind on something if they were wrong. So imagine that they hear of the impostor going around, but whenever they meet them, they feel that power and that pull. But because they've conditioned themselves to think of them as the impostor and not the actual creator, they stay stubborn and just push off that doubt in their minds.
Y'know who wouldn't be like that? FOCALORS (and Nahida cuz Irminsul). Think about it, she barely hears about any sort of like rumors or any badmouthin the cause she's been inside the Oritrice, and because she is made out of water (Oceanid stuff), they're more in tune with the authority. So without that block, they can tell right away during the trial on the "impostor" that they are in fact the real creator, which is why it will ALWAYS say they are innocent, no matter what.
Anyways, kinda went off on a tangent there sorry-
🍌anon
See this is where I ended up deep diving in the wiki by accident at one point that caused me to have this big brain moment.
So we know the Primordial One exists right? This is a canon god that created humans after essentially taking over Teyvat with the Heavenly Principles. That's canon.
So if the Primordial One is already canonically the one who created our characters (essentially)...what the fuck did our creator create?
My answer, Teyvat itself of course. But also the dragon Sovereigns themselves.
But I can already hear you asking, then how did we get to the modern canon of gods? Simple, Teyvat itself is an entity that can control and influence the elements, albeit very little. And with that influence the Heavenly Principles can't fully erase the authority of the creator, instead they rewrite history to favor them.
Saying the Dragons grew tired of being under the creator and chose to rebel, causing the creator to summon the Primordial One (which causes the creator to gain the title of Primordial Mother) to gain aid from. Then we essentially have our original canon mythos that's in the game itself. Essentially it's the same as with any history, written by the victors instead of what the full truth is.
And for why the archons can't recognize the creator is simply because the Heavenly Principles just won't allow them to. Because they've stolen (or attempted to for eons) the authority from the creator.
And here's my own hot take when it comes to the role of the Heavenly Principles, they aren't the creator's friend. They're more like a parasite that's trying to take over what the creator had originally made. Though the reasons I haven't fully thought up honestly. Could be jealousy, a twisted version of obsession, honestly it's up in the air for now.
But I like your hot take! Honestly most aus I've seen where the Heavenly Principles are on the creator's side would fit this very well. Actually it would be interesting if someone did an au where the isekaied protagonist is the reincarnation of the Primordial One and has to deal with the fact that they are trapped in Fontaine because the rage the Hydro Sovereign has would keep them there for all eternity just so he could enact justice on their past life's actions.

ya got any ideas for gawain in your au? came up with a neat oc idea for gawain and the green knight. there's a lot of potential for a cute little monster transformation story seeing as a lot of the mythos features the green knight as being somehow transformed by morgan ^_^
I'm so glad you asked this... I actually had an old concept of this...
After ditching the G.S.A..... Morgan took on another apprentice (after Sir Dragato), "Gawain," and he's come to claim the seat as leader of the GSA.
He knew he wasn't as strong as the other knights... and a part of him always knew he'd never reach the legendary status as the others, so he made a deal with the devil (Morgan). He was her pawn... her puppet to secretly control the GSA in her name.
Gawain was supposed to be Meta's call to action to return & Dragato's "ah- ha" moment (my mentor was a scumbag to me).
But in the end, Gawain (my OC)... I had to cut him from the story. They took away too much from Dragato's storyline... and Meta's call to action is a different one.
So, these are my HCs if Gawain were in "Metamorphosed."
And @camachine, if you want to use it in your story, please feel free, you have my full blessing~
And for those of you who haven't read @camachine's "Metamorphosed" please do so before you keep reading, there will be several references/spoilers. (and it's a good read)
Inspo.
I drew reference from Gawain's original story "Gawain & the Green Knight," his original story... But I also drew from the modern retelling of The Green Knight (2021) the film She's his mother.
This is also considered a continuation of the previous work...minus the Gwynn revival...
Okay, so in "Metamorphosed," Gawain is the nephew of Arthur. The son of his other half-sister (Anna)... another one of Sir Uther's illegitimate kids and Morgan's sister. Yes, their mother cursed the Pendragon's name.
In the OG Arthurian legend, she's called Morgause (sometimes she's called Anna)... and it's too close to Morgan for me, so she's Anna.
This means she cursed the kids too... (Morgan had to get her pettiness from somewhere), however, if they wanted to avoid the curse... they just had to carry out their mother's will.
However, Anna wants to move on and live in peace, so she cuts Morgan out of her life. She married the love of her life (King Lot). She gets pregnant with Gawain and BAM! She dies giving birth to him... (Again, being a Pendragon means you're cursed!!)
King Lot falls into grief: and guess who he blames... baby Gawain! Since then, Gawain has put a lot of pressure on his son from the moment he was born... he would say to his young son, "You better make yourself useful and make yourself worth it..."
From the start, little Gawain had such an innocent desire to just be a great knight... so he could earn the love of his father... but he was never good enough for him... he just needed to be the perfect heir & knight so maybe... just maybe for once, his father to look at him...
No, in fact, his King Lot would deny he even had a son... because it would remind him that his dear wife was gone! As a result, Gawain would hide away in some far part of the castle... so he wouldn't be seen by anyone.
Then, one night, a monster comes and raids the castle... a basilisk (they assume it's one of Nightmare's monsters), but Gawain sees a ghostly figure... a green knight?
Wanting to prove himself, he dives right in to save his father. Everyone else is afraid, but Gawain isn't (well, he is.... but he's not missing out on the chance to prove himself to his father!) He chases after this ghost knight... while Morgan puts out an illusionary spell.
Making it look like this basilisk has killed Prince Gawain instantly (petrifying & swallowing him whole) & King Lot is now full of grief and regret. His son protected him despite all those years of coldness... and still loved him. Desperately wishing he could see his son again and apologize to his son.
Meanwhile, the real Prince Gawian follows the green knight (who is actually Dame Morgan in disguise) into an abandoned castle... and defeats him. (In refer. to the film The Green Knight 2021)
The ghost congratulates him on having their test of bravery and virtue... and says, "Since you've defeated me, you are now the Green Knight... and have earned my axe & title." However, Gawain is not easily convinced "No-no, one ever gets anything for free in this life... that's what my father says..."
Telling himself there must be more to this...The green knight offers it to him three times, sweetening the deal each time: "Along with the axe, I'll give my castle as well, and you'll be the perfect knight that you've always wanted to be..."
Gawain is tempted by each one, but something in his gut tells him not to... just as he's about to leave...the third offer is him something he could never refuse... "You'll get to have a mother again~"
With this... they'll be a family again... THIS IS IT!? Gawain (like in the original tale, Gawain gives into his human desire but "the desire to stay alive,"... it's the desire to see his mother).
Without hesitation, he grabs the axe only to be cursed instantly... As a result, Morgan makes him the"Green Knight..." endowing him with her dark Faye magic (making him into a monster- Basilisk) and in the process, he also loses his memories...
With Morgan rewriting it to this narrative:
Morgan was his mother, and their father abandoned them after he was turned into a monster (by Nightmare). He was afraid to be associated with him because of Sir Uther's regimen in the G.S.A. (and wanted no retribution.) And his cruel father even wanted to prove his allegiance to Uther & the GSA... but his mother wouldn't allow it. His mother saved him from his evil father, and as a result, he (his father) left them. And plans to destroy the GSA and make it a safer world for her and her precious son!
Basically, this gives him (Gawain) reason to hate the Pendragons (Sir Arthur & his family) as well as having unwavering love & loyalty to "his mother," who did everything to protect him because "she loves him so much"~ Plus (him being half-monster) it's a great reason for keeping him from going outside so often so he's not recognized as King Lot's. (The curse altered his appearance, but if you look hard enough, you can see it's Gawain under there.)
Lucky for Morgan... (despite knowing they had a prince)... the kingdom barely knew what the young prince looked like. Only coming out when it was necessary... Gawain did this intentionally so as not to upset his father with his present. (Oh how convenient~)
(Almost if not all) Arthurian interpretations Morgan always uses her kids as tools for revenge... Gawain's no different~
Tumblr media
The orange color represents the Lothian Kingdom (King Lot), but after being cursed, the original color is turned red (red - Morgan).
Their name changed to Yvain (In Arthurian lore that is the name of Morgan le Faye) And then his monster form... Basilisk.
According to my source, a basilisk is a "hybrid chicken-serpent" but to make things easier for myself I just keep thinking about one one from Harry Potter (but @camachine feel free to change up the monster form for the guy already.)
But his smaller, default form would be a snake. (Basically, to symbolize he's a "snake" within the GSA.) He'd collect secrets and intel through the walls of the GSA and bring it back to Morgan.
She plans to destroy everything Sir Uther built (the GSA)... with Gawain being her most valuable chess piece. Taking over the GSA and installing him as the new leader... she's more than fulfilling her promise to help become "the perfect knight," she's basically ensuring he'll be that best. (She'll just happen to be rulering through him... Momma's gotta get something outta this!)
Not only that (despite having his memories erased), Gawain's core hasn't changed. He's still the same young lad desperate for love & praise... the thing he's never gotten from his father. And because of that, he was willing to do anything for his dear mother~
It's actually easy for Morgan to be, good to this kid... after all, she's still his auntie... (She's basically Mother Gothel from Rapunzel...)
A part of her is still upset with he sister (Anna) for abandoning her (for not wanting to get involved with their mother's curse). Using her sister's son as her pawn was just her way of getting back at her... dear sister... Speaking of siblings let's talk about Sir Arthur.
After finding out that she had a half-brother, she discovers that Uther actually acknowledged him (Arthur) as his son and denied her as his daughter... UNACCEPTABLE!
So what does she do... make him feel the same jealousy & inadequacy she's felt... all those years Uther denied her. And what does she do... she rubs her loving relationship with her son right in his face... (Kindly remind him of how bad he screwed up his relationship with his son...)
Dame Morgan rolls up with Gawain (now being called Ywain her son), who has just been accepted as one of the higher-ups... since someone got kicked off (Arthur) of the high council.
And how did Gawain manage to get it in such a short amount of time, you may ask?
Remember, our dear Gawain was a prince after all... he still had muscle & instinctual memory of his royal training. was clever, polite, graceful, respectful... (he's everything a prince should be... ) And Morgan can take credit for it all, for raising him so well~
(fake) Mother & son just happened to be off to celebrate, But then she sees Arthur as they're leaving and "OH HOW COULD SHE MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!"
Tumblr media
Sir Arthur (of course, was suspicious)... he never heard of Morgan being married before... let alone having a son. (Especially after flirting with his wife all those years ago...) Plus, this boy looked familiar...
(And he should... Arthur met King Lot and his son... years ago that twice even...)
But Morgan's a grade-A+ actress... and can play "the bitter ex-wife who's still trying to forget about her divorce..." perfectly. And doesn't miss the chance to remind him about his deceased wife Gwynn... who was killed by(Arthur) his own hand. And she ever so gracefully brings up her son... & ever so subtly shows off their bond, rubbing it in Arthur's face.
And Gawain (ever the faithful son) sees what she's doing and allows his mother to fawn over him in public. Even allowing her to call him "her his little apple." A nickname she'd call him ever since he was a little lad (that was his favorite memory of her). (TOO BAD IT'S FABRICATED... :')
I definitely wrote this within the timeline where Arthur stabs Falspar while he was trying to kill Meta Knight and fails... (or this could fit around where Falspar & Dragato leave the GSA after the wedding)
(But move it around wherever you want! :3 )
I'd like to think it's after the stabbing because in the sense Morgan's basically saying: "Oh look, it's my darling son that I love very much! Arthur, what did you do with yours... oh that's right, you stabbed yours... I'd never do that! Look at what you lost! SUCKS TO BE YOU!"
Arthur sees this sweet, touching scene between mother & son, and he can't help but envy them. (Reminding him all too well that he's all alone in the world, because of his own actions.) After successfully guilt-tripping Arthur, the two gleefully leave him in tears. Little did he know Arthur had just let the most dangerous duo in the galaxy slip from his grasp!
At that moment... had Arthur not been wrapped in his own personal problems he could have recognized (if he, looked hard enough) Gawain and saved him.
But even if he did... by then (after the incident,) Arthur's reputation had been already destroyed. Had he not wasted his time accusing an innocent man (Meta Knight) of treason. And now, because of his own decisions, a guilty woman walks free (Morgan), and the galaxy's gonna suffer for it (Dammit, Arthur!)
Despite putting on a "show" she's actually a good (evil) mom... she's supportive, kind, nurturing, loving, but not out of the kindness of her heart. She's merely fulfilling the end of the bargain...
To be still under her spell, Morgan must continue to fulfill her promises to him. Castle (given), perfect knight (taking over the GSA), and loving mother (check).
As long as Gawain believes her to be his mother, then he's forever under her spell. (Because that's what he wanted). He does have the power to save himself (the red flags are all there) once he realizes that he can break free... (but it's not that simple.)
Morgan poisoned his mind, yes, but this is a sweet poison. In the memories she created, he gave him the normal childhood he'd always wanted. A loving mother who adores him he loses that and will have to accept that he was a lonely prince who was ignored most of his life and is hated by his father.
As long as Gawain wants her love, he'll continue to be under her spell.
I wrote in a way that Gawain could save himself if only he'd realize that he doesn't have to be perfect... that he was always worthy of love, and that he doesn't need her (Morgan's) love, and that he was always enough. The spell would be broken!
(The original tale of Gawain & the Green Knight was supposed to represent one's acceptance of human flaws and that one can not be perfect... so that's why it's the key to set him free! SELF LOVE & ACCEPTANCE!)
Or if King Lot can find & recognize his son and snap him out of this mess. After the incident, Lot vowed to find the body of his son... but has yet to find it, so he's holding out hope that he's still alive. But then, again Lotty (King Lot) ... had you just loved your son properly none of this would have happened!
Those are my HC for Gawain, if he existed in "Metamorphosed," @camachine, thank you so much for your question! Even though I had scrapped him from KBASW, I'm so glad I got to revive him for your Kirby (au), it was so much fun! Hope you enjoyed it!

Anything you wanna ramble about?
Jfbdksjeekdj so many things!!
I’ve been rambling about my modern au for a while so maybe I’ll do the mythical creatures thing that’s been knocking around my brain. This time :D
Have you ever heard of a Peryton? They’re essentially winged deer who are the Guardians of the Forest. Fierce and intense, magically haunting. Very cool. Some people’s interpretations have them with these really wicked fangs.
And thunderbirds!! They’re like coated in lightning and I have got to get my hands on more information on them. They’re so cool!
Which of course made me go hmmm what if, what if. And I play fast and loose with everything when I write because it’s more fun for me that way… so LU mythical creatures. I’ve seen it done a few times and LOVE the concept;
Twilight is harder than expected when you don’t want to take the easy way out. I’ve been playing with the idea of a version of Peryton for him, more wolf than deer, BUT then I remembered that Black Shucks are a mythic, ghostly dog-like creature that exist and it kind of fits in the most spooky sense. Depending on where you look at the mythos, they’re either menacing (malevolent also but eh) or companionable omens of death that usually roam a coastline. There’s also church grims, which often take the form of a black dog, and guard church cemeteries. So playing fast and loose, as I do, I thought Twilight could be the more companionable, omen bearing Black Shuck in his Mythic form and then by the time he meets Wild in BOTW, he’s more spirit-like and is more akin to a Church Grim… just on a more personal level. I think it would be a fun little idea to play with instead of meeting Wild on the Plateau and have him be like “guarding” the Shrine… Wild meets him in Blatchery Plains where he actually died and that’s where they meet.
Sky would be some form of Thunderbird and nothing will change my mind on this. It fits. SO WELL. At least from what little I remember from previous research dives on the subject. I also originally had planned to have Sky be the reason that the Faron region changes from being a big growth forest in Twi’s time to the lightning infested jungle of BOTW/TOTK. It was gonna be because he was visiting Twi, who if I had left him as a Peryton would have been bound to the forest he guarded, which was planned to be Faron! Obviously I’ve changed that somewhat… but I still like the idea so I may find a way to work it back in.
I don’t like to take the easy routes when doing these kinds of concepts, not because I look down on them but more because I like the challenge. So Hyrule is giving me a little trouble because he’s canonically got fae blood. So like fae or even changeling… but changelings are a type of fae so of course I’m going to go all in on that (and get horribly distracted because doppelgängers are a type of fae, what that’s so cool) and it’s lead me down a rabbit hole. So more on Hyrule another day…
Wind is also giving me fits because he’s going to be something ocean related and it’s gotta fit his nature, so there’s Cephali which are a type of Sea fae and then there’s others that are more commonly thought of, but I could make him something wind related a novel idea I know which means more research to be done! I had some other ideas, like mythos or superstition believed by sailors to draw inspiration for but like I said more research.
Wild! Is! A! Church Grim! Also! But he’s gonna be an amalgamation like Twi. Dryad calls to me for him, but I want to do a little more digging because it’s gonna be a connection thing for him. He’s a church grim, but all of Hyrule is the cemetery :3c hehe oops
Time is 100% a changeling. Hands down. No explanation needed. He may become something else after events of TP, he may not, we will see. I will saying nothing else because mans needs to be mysterious. It may change if I stumble across something more interesting though
Legend is a kitsune (which is also!! A type of fae!! It falls into fae rules. Very interesting.) but they’ve got that same tenuous relationship with being perceived as good versus not good. In a lot of myths, they’re the messengers of the sun goddess… which feels fitting for Legend since he’s been on the most adventures! The more intense Good vs Bad in their mythos also feels fitting because Ravio is also a kitsune! While mythos says they’re fox spirits… I don’t follow rules so they’re bunnies. Heh.
Warriors is going to be my only one without anything as of yet. I want to do more research into mythic creatures and spirits more associated with war and just haven’t had the time yet. Maybe this weekend. Some of these wouldn’t have “true forms” while on their adventure through time together… so it would be interesting to have TOTK events happen post LU events and have Wild contend with how changed his brothers have become in the years (millennia for then really) since they traveled together.
This was rrreeeaaallllllllyyy long. Oops lol

Hazbin Hotel rewrite AU-adjacent hot takes: Not only should Alastor not be as powerful as the other Sinner Overlords, I think the identity of the Radio Demon should've started out as a Mystery, a voice on any and all radio equipment (yes even the modern shit, though Alastor hates it) that transforms (unsure how fast) the radio tech into old timey radio magitech versions or something. And if Alastor had to be there, then him pretending to be his own (see: the Radio Demon's) lackey might've been interesting? Him showing up carrying a big 30s radio that The Radio Demon speaks to Charlie & co through?
Idk, also the Radio Demon not being considered an 'Overlord' proper but still a threat who's identity and even true face (if they even have one lol) is a mystery to the public at large. Alastor maintaining a separation of personas could've been fun. Yes Alastor would still be an ambush predator, but if Alastor has aspects of a deer, one of their main survival strats is camouflage and hiding. Him being picky with his confrontations and controlling the where's and whens of how to stage it to build up on the Radio Demon's mythos and carefully building up his carefully curated collection of favors (and maybe a handful of ongoing contracts like Husk or Niffty) amongst the people of Hell while still maintaining the choice of anonymity.
Idk, maybe it could factor into one of several reasons he chooses to ally with Charlie's venture and not just purely boredom? Like yes, he technically People can have onion layers. Thoughts?
Ooh, I really love that second one, the whole camouflage and hiding like a deer aspect. It always seemed weird to me that he was grouped among the Overlords, since nothing he does gives the impression that that's the kind of title he's interested in.
Even if he shows up and we know his identity, I like the idea that most of Hell doesn't know what the Radio Demon looks like. Because that's usually how it goes with radio personalities, especially back them.
(Extremely random side note: I listen to a lot of 40s Junction on Sirius XM and the host sounds just like Alastor. In my heart, it always will be.)

The Clausa AU
The life of a Clausa is by far one of the loneliest in existence. Clausan are born to be feared; mere months after being born, they’re trained to live by the Clausan Guidelines:
Avoid light sources.
Hide during the day.
Never cross beyond the doorway.
Clausan are supernatural creatures that live in closets and deliver negative empathic energy to their homeworld. Due to their high caliber of performance in training, Clausan Character A is assigned not to an orphanage or a hospital, but to a military housing residence where they view the difficult lives of different residents every year, enduring PTSD episodes, teenage rebellion, and more negative energy than even the Clausa can handle.

The ask from @inaconstantstateofchange about what characters my OCs would like if they were in the modern world got me thinking:
What would my OCs be like in the modern world?
The two that jumped out at me the most in this set up were Sahed and Gardon, since they'd be human instead of dragons/dragonborns in this au, so I'm just gonna talk about them for now and maybe expand on the others later.
Sahed
Tumblr media
I see Sahed as a student at a university studying history and being very passionate about it. He does whatever he needs to on campus and in his research in order to get the results he wants, often stealing writings from classmates and faculty as well as taking advantage of other people's kindness. He's currently working on his thesis for his PhD and wants to go above and beyond with it because he expects nothing less of himself. He's studying mythical creatures and the folklore that surrounds them with a focus especially on dragons and the different mythos surrounding them from multiple cultures.
Sahed isn't always the most intelligent, but he's very well spoken and tries to act like he's the smartest in his department. It does not earn him any friends, and most people that know him well enough don't like him. He's made a point to distance himself enough so that people only see his charming facade and don't actually know he's a pompous prick with a superiority complex.
Gardon
Tumblr media
Gardon is an older professor with tenure that feels trapped at his job. He's wanted to quit for years, but doesn't have the means to quit. He was married once, but his wife left him years ago, and he never quite recovered. She told him that he'd never be able to change the things he hated about himself, and she just couldn't try to help him anymore. They never had kids, so Gardon truly lives alone these days. He's also a veteran that suffers from PTSD, so the poor guy is really doing his best to not give up everyday of his life.
He runs the historical department that Sahed is studying in and works with Sahed, but he hates it. Sahed reminds Gardon of all the things he hates about himself, but he does need to help the doctorate student with his thesis since he's the only faculty member with a relevant background. It doesn't help either that Sahed has a lot of features that remind him of his wife. They have the same hair color, same eye color, and even similar mannerisms. If only Sahed wasn't so frustrating to deal with, perhaps Gardon would find comfort in this student. Instead, he does his best to tolerate the younger man and get the work done with quickly so he can be left alone again.
---
Dammit, now I want art renditions of these two in human forms. Also the art of Sahed was a commission from @flavoredmagpie. Ya'll should check out their art if you like a clean and dynamic style.
Might also expand this into a fic of its own. Who knows? The dynamic between these two in particular is especially interesting to me...

The claim that writers are "giving Lex Bruce's traits" in fanfic or redemption arcs is so interesting to me because what traits are we talking about. And I’d also like to hear what these people think Lex Luthor's real, non-derivative traits are? (Because I wonder if they would end up listing traits introduced in post-crisis or the dcau, and whether they would be entirely negative/villainous.)
I've seen people say that sort of thing about Smallville's Lex before and I'm not denying there are parallels between him and Bruce, but assuming the portrayal must owe entirely to Bruce comes across as pretty ignorant to me as a fan of pre-crisis Superman. (And I don't think it helps that World's Finest stories historically have presented Lex in a very one-dimensional manner.)
SV Lex's (initial) compassion? That's originally from silver age elseworlds where Lex was a good guy, as well as flashbacks to his and Superboy's friendship. I understand not being aware of its origins in the comics because modern versions like Waid's have Lex lack compassion the whole time, but that doesn't mean SV came up with it wholesale and copied Batman.
His protectiveness? That's just a trait that Lex has (at least when he's being written with nuance). It originates with the stuff with Lena in the silver age, but would get extended to Clark and/or Lois as well in aus. And it's distinct from Bruce because even at his best Lex isn't really altruistic, he's only protective of people who are important to him. (Plus there’s the way that Lex’s protectiveness manifests in ways that the people he’s protecting neither want nor ask for.)
Him liking kids? This is also from pre-crisis. That Lex had surprisingly tender relationships with children who relied on him like his sister, nephew, and son. And it's also distinct from Bruce because Lex only tends to only care about children in his own family rather than about them as a category.
Look, Lex is an extremely intelligent, prideful man. He's been consistently depicted as wealthy since the 80s. He has great chemistry with Superman, as an enemy/rival, a friend, and a foil, and they're organically able to contrast and push back on one another. People are going to draw comparisons between him and Bruce Wayne. Even Maggin contrasted them in order to show off Lex’s faults.
And sure, I think there are some things that SV did probably did get straight from Batman! Like Lex using his money and power to get people help. The flavour his compassion takes in the early seasons is pretty Batman-ish. I'm also not sure how to feel about the concept of him being an heir to a fortune of billions, as it does make him more similar to Bruce on the surface, though the fact he's set to inherit an evil corporation built by his father and that he was abused and deprived of love as a trade-off for that privilege is definitely unique.
But god, this idea that portraying Lex as a better person is inherently derivative of Bruce's character or Clark's dynamic with Bruce drives me kind of nuts. It's ignorant, presumptuous, and disrespectful to the strength and history of both Superman's mythos and Lex as a character.
TLDR; Not everything is about Batman.

Long ago someone once told me that “Harry Potter is the ‘little black dress’ of [fan fic/crossover fic]”. I never really cared for HP as a story, and more (less?) so now because of the hate hole the author cannot dig herself out of. As someone still writing HP fic in the modern age, would you be able to explain the above adage? What exactly is it about HP mythos that’s so attractive for crossover fic?
Thank you for your insight.
I'm very tired so I apologize for what will likely not be a super coherent response but here we go:
I've never heard it expressed this way, but I think the sentiment is accurate. I can't answer for everyone, obviously, but the appeal of HP for me (despite JK Rowling's awfulness and the inherent problematic aspects of the material itself) is A. nostalgia and B. the HP world's ability to work as a foundation for a plethora of genres/tropes that can easily be adapted by writers while still being recognized by readers.
The A. is pretty self-explanatory. I read the first HP book when I was 12 and a new one was released pretty much every year after that. I grew up with Harry Potter and the HP fandom. I know a lot of queer folks my age have a similar attachment, and JK's terfness has actually encouraged us to write/create more fandom content as a way of reclaiming the material (I said in another post, we don't just believe in Death of the Author in this house, we believe in Murdering the Author and then rifling through her stuff to keep the good things and toss the bad). The B, which is more what you're referring to, I think, is the foundational aspect. HP is a cultural phenomenon. Most people in the US over the age of 10 at least have a basic knowledge of the world/characters, which means it's a great anchor point for people creating media. It also encompasses, or can support, a really diverse breadth and depth of genres/tropes. The world is large, which means the sandbox for transformative fans to play in is also large. And a lot of the sandbox is gestured to but unexplored in canon. The possibilities are endless. You can write a fantasy, a mystery, a romance, a sports romance, a buddy cop narrative, a kidfic, a coffee shop au, etc. and it's all, more or less, in-universe. Because the universe contains multitudes. The HP fandom is also VERY forgiving/supportive of diversions from canon within "canon" worldbuilding. It's probably the most supportive I've seen. I mean, the majority of fic I've read is proudly tagged as canon non-compliant and/or epilogue? what epilogue? Most fic falls into two camps, I think: "I love this, so I'm writing more" and "This thing has promise but you fucked it up and I'm going fix it." I feel like a good portion of HP fandom, at least today, is doing the latter. The first HP fic I wrote, and the one I'm working on now, play very fast and loose with the magical dynamics Rowling set up, completely throw out her shitty werewolf rhetoric, and are focused on trauma and creature politics--something Rowling didn't really address in any depth (and what little she did I'm ignoring). But I can do all of that while still being anchored in a familiar environment that folks feel comfortable in.
Hopefully, that makes sense. And if anyone wants to add to (or disagree with!) my thoughts, go for it.
