Silly Newsies Headcannons!!!

Most of these came from my current production of newsies! So most of them are about Finch and Mush.

- Modern Albert is either goth or punk, and he has a good amount of facial piercings

- Finch has ADHD (this is cannon cuz i’m playing finch and i have adhd)

- Finch has some sort of disorder that causes chronic pain in his joints (again this is cuz i’m playing finch and this is me fr)

- Finch and Mush are siblings (Finch is the older brother and Mush is the younger sister) and most of Mush’s clothes are Finch’s old clothes

- Specs can’t read (“I hope it’s real bloody with a nice clear picture” mf cannot read so he needs the picture)

- Mush is a lesbian and in love with Katherine (mush in my production says so herself)

- Morris is scared of Finch because Finch always shoots him with his slingshot

- Mush and Specs call Finch a thousand different nicknames that are close to finch but not finch. ex: fence, french, fench, fartch

- Crutchie and Finch are besties

- Finch is not so sure about Jack’s ability to lead a strike (this is pretty cannon based off of his dialogue)

- Finch got his nickname from birds always landing on his shoulder (he’s like a disney princess)

- Modern Race chews gum all the time instead of smoking cigars, it’s like a stim, and Albert carries around a pack of gum just in case Race forgets his

- Most of the newsies didn’t know Jack was an artist

- Jack mixes up the newsies names all the time

- Some of the newsies with a nickname (Finch, Specs, etc.) forgot their actual name

- Finch will pull a newsie’s hat over their eyes and/or knock it off their head

- Race chews on his cigar

- Modern Race wears lipgloss like chapstick

Finch for the character ask game?

Ooh I love Finch 🥰🥰

I'm not incredibly familiar with him outside of fanon but I still have thoughts

One aspect about them I love:

He's witty and likes poking fun at the other newsies, but knows how to stay strictly on the side of teasing whereas some of the others tend to venture slightly into making fun of

One aspect I wish more people understood about them:

He tries to act all brave and tough but deep down man is a scaredy cat and all talk. He will stay out of trouble for the most part (i.e. "I ain't scared of no turf, but... Spot Conlon...")

Headcannons I have about them:

Modern Finch definitely plays guitar but he isn't one of those guys who plays it at any given moment. Most of his friends don't even know he plays.

He tends to keep a level head and knows how to be sympathetic towards his friends. If anyone in the lodging house is upset for any reason, most of them tend to come to Finch for a shoulder to lean on

He likes dogs, fight me. Especially big ones.

He got his name because he used to fire his slingshot at pigeons just to see if he could hit them down (he never could) and the one and only time he managed to get one, it turned out to not be a pigeon at all, but a finch. He cried about it.

One character I love seeing them interact with:

Crutchie. I didn't get a chance to see uksies myself, but I've seen little clips and some other people's notes and I'm so in love with them

One character I wish they'd interact more with:

Race!!! They have that little interaction just before KoNY (F: why do old people talk? R: to prove they's still alive) and I just think their humor is so similar but different enough to work so so well together !!!

Headcannons I have involving them and other characters:

Sometimes the newsies will just be chilling around in the lodging house and someone will say something about another newsie and it'll just turn into Finch and Race going back and forth roasting the same poor soul

After Crutchie gets back from the refuge, Finch moves from his top bunk to a bottom bunk so Crutchie can stay with him and not worry about getting up or down a ladder (whether it be to a top bunk or to the pent house)

Finch and Albert like to go on walks around the city whenever they have some spare time. It usually ends with them just messing around and more often than not they both return with some new bruises and wide smiles. No one ever knows where the bruises come from, but they can guess it probably has something to do with the new dents in the nearest overpriced food stand and Finch's pebble supply being smaller than it was before they left

Modern Finch and Crutchie go on milkshake dates at least once a month, regardless of if they're dating or not

-has definitely been on at least one date with like half the newsboys. only enjoyed it with race and romeo. no i will not be elaborating -the only newsie too scared to ask him out is jack of course. -has no friends at school. cmon you wouldn’t be friends with him if he went to ur school be fr -^this is why he loves the newsies so much and feels so accepted around them because they actually like him for once -he has to dull down his vocabulary so much around them that he gets influenced by how they talk. sometime he gets home and starts clipping off the ends of words, using is instead of are, etc etc. all throughout dinner his entire family just looks at him like 🤨 -sometimes forgets the smallest words and continues to use bigger and bigger words to try and remember them (this one was from the discord :3) -hates school. he may be smart but still doesn’t like going. probably gets bullied -really trusts sarah with everything, she can definitely keep a secret and knows a lot more about davey than anyone does -is hopelessly inlove with jack kelly😭 -probably fantasizes about him before going to bed every night -the nights after he gets asked out, he thinks about the person the whole time. the next day he usually goes home and cries because he knows none of the dates will ever go well -kinda a hopeless romantic. if that wasn’t obvious. -has sworn off swearing but does it anyways

-laptop person -thinks taking grapes from the produce section is stealing and always yells at les for doing it -wears a hoodie over a long sleeve with sweatpants and 5 blankets to sleep no matter the weather -can never answer icebreaker questions. cat person or dog person? tea or coffee? favorite color? movie? food? he has no idea -he is def a cat person tho -makes the most jaw dropping, feral, downbad comments about jack and sarah just looks at him like 😨😨

Newsies Headcannons (modern day)

Jack

Is an art major, obviously

Bisexual 💗💜💙

He/him pronouns

Always has paint on his hands

Uses sign all the time to talk to Davey and Albert

Has entire sketchbooks full of drawings and paintings of Davey

Their friends tease him about being an obsessive stalker but Davey thinks it’s sweet

The only think Jack can cook is grilled cheese (and it took him three months to learn)

Sometimes he still burns one side and when that happens he wraps it up in tinfoil and makes another one because he knows Davey can’t stand when it’s burnt and is way too considerate to say anything.

Gives Spot the half burned sandwiches for Race and Albert when they forget to eat.

He definitely has anxiety

And minor PTSD from his early childhood

Mostly having nightmares/flashbacks about things he saw happen to Race or Crutchie.

Even though Race and Charlie are grown up he’s the most overprotective brother ever

Sprained his wrist once

He still complains about it hurting when it rains.

Davey

Majoring in English lit

Is the only person to still read the newspaper

But he’s usually all right because Jack makes sure to ask for the itinerary, bring earplugs/sunglasses, and drive him separately so they can go home of it gets overwhelming.

Hates having meltdowns in front of anyone other than Jack, even though their friends are supportive

Had never broken a bone, probably the only one in their friends group

Even though they’re all adults now

Has a ridiculous amount of pins on their backpack, funny ones, quotes, environmental causes, charities, art, pretty much anything he can find.

He occasionally has nightmares from certain foster homes but only like once or twice every few months.

But when he has them it’s bad, Jack usually has to drive to his dorm in the middle of the night when it happens.

Broke his leg in like four places when their Foster father (before Medda) pushed him off a two story staircase.

Race

Has no idea what he’s going to major in but probably something like Math or Physics

Will be taking Spots ear off about the most random stuff and then just fall asleep in the middle of a sentence.

Is the only person who can get away with calling Spot anything other than his chosen name (Sean, Seanie, Spotty, etc.)

Jack tried it once and Spot punched his shoulder so hard it was bruised for a week.

Race has PTSD from his childhood as well, before Medda took him in and he met Jack and Crutchie.

He’s usually okay as long as he can avoid his triggers but he’s insanely claustrophobic and will cry at loud noises.

He also has bad nightmares but Spot can usually call him down

He’s a fairly upbeat person in general but he definitely gets depressed sometimes.

Definitely has Anxiety

He always wears crop tops when he dances

He kind of wants to major in dance but he’s afraid to commit in case he can’t make the money he needs.

Even though Spot is like “married couples get joint checking accounts all the time Racer”

Race thinks he’s joking (he is not joking)

And sometimes he really struggles with his body, he doesn’t want to commit to wearing sports bras in tight costumes.

Eventually Race gets his top surgery

Medda has been secretly saving a certain percent of money from each of her shows since she adopted Race when he was thirteen because she knew he’d need it someday

It takes years but she surprises him after his first year of college and he gets the surgery at the beginning of the summer

After that he decides to major in dance (at Spot and Albert’s encouragement)

He starts wearing crop tops and going around the kitchen shirtless and it drives Spot crazy

Spot

Law (because he likes to argue way too much)

He/him pronouns

Half of his life is dedicated to reminding Race to do things, tie his shoes, shower, sleep, take off his binder etc.

Complains about it constantly but honestly doesn’t mind looking out for Race

Game of Thrones, Hannibal, American Horror Story etc. but secretly loves period dramas like Anne with an E and Bridgerton.

Spot will fight anyone who is rude to his friends, someone misgendered Race once and lets just say it didn’t end well.

He does NOT lose arguments ever.

He has PTSD from when he was a kid

When he gets triggered he pretty much won’t move or talk

But after a few months of dating Race he agreed to see Race’s therapist and it’s been helping him a lot

When it does still happen Race always holds him until he comes out of it.

He definitely has a lot of scars he doesn’t like to talk about

Race always respects this but he also kisses Spots scars when he’s shirtless around the apartment

He has a collection, mostly he buys boots and then cons Jack into painting them whenever he loses a bet.

He definitely takes sign as his language requirement

Race takes Italian, Spot takes Spanish, everyone else takes sign and aces it

Except Jack because he’s so distracted by Davey’s excitement at being able to sign in class that he literally forgets to watch the teacher

Albert definitely has some tattoo that Race convinced him to get when they were like fifteen, something really random like a flower and he had no idea why he chose it.

Again, nothing against people who indulge in these types of headcannons, but please don’t ask me to make one of these)

ABSOLUTELY I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED

his hearing loss is different depending on the fic i’m writing!

in (general) modern aus, he has congenital hearing loss (meaning he was born w it)

both of his parents are hearing, he was born with CMV (cytomegalovirus) 

his hearing loss progressed rapidly when he was young, ultimately leaving him with severe hearing loss

after he was first diagnosed with hearing loss, his parents decided they would all learn sign language

he can lip read somewhat, but only catches about 10% of conversation that way

when he’s young he also has an in-the-canal hearing aid, later switching to a behind-the-ear aid as his hearing loss had worsened

when he was a teenager he would regularly take out his hearing aids, sign to his parents that he couldn’t hear them, and continue ignoring them

when he’s in college, he and al are matched randomly as roommates and the first time he does it, after they’ve been living together for a few months, al is just. so taken aback

he teaches al, buttons, and finch asl, the other newsies pick up some signs but they obviously aren’t quite as fluent

specifically in my redfinch au, his hearing loss is the same but the situation is a lott different

races parents died when he was young and he was raised in foster care

fic spoilers lol but finch adopts him and becomes like his older brother, when he has enough money he buys race his first hearing aids :,)

in the apocalypse au, he has noise-induced hearing loss; his left eardrum ruptures after continued exposure to gunfire

he ends up with 70% hearing loss in his left ear and permanent tinnitus

race avoids guns as much as he reasonably can after that, and at the first chance they get insists the newsies do what they can to protect their ears from gunfire

as it's an apocalypse haha medical care isn't high on the list of possibilities so it becomes more of a "deal with it" situation unfortunately

the newsies get used to approaching him/talking to him from the right pretty quickly, and try their best to be patient as he often needs them to repeat things several times

canon era is kind of an amalgamation--it's congenital, but being a street urchin doesn't exactly make him first in line for care so he just has to adapt

sorry for the late reply on this but, romeo time!

- First off big headcannon is that my boy is Aro/Ace! i can just. see it so well

- Romeo is still a scruffy dirt poor newsboy but he does have some looks and has seinfeld he’s been a kid; picture getting all those weird “oh you’re gonna be a heartbreaker” one day comments comming to him a lot

- He’s always been very insecure about this and has been nervous about looking too badly or eating too much despite it tiny source of food income

- Back to the aro ace headcannon bit him being in a world where being gay or not straight is illegal and there is zero lgbtq community, figuring out that he doesn’t like women, but also dosent like men is horribly confusing.

- He’s a flirt, a complete egomaniac. But the fact is this is because he sees it more as a defense mechanism, something that gives him control and makes him feel somewhat normal. It can make nobody end up turing around and questioning him on his utter lack of Actual game.

- As mentioned Flirting is something he’s mastered to give him control. Even as a little kid when he was still with his single mother she controlled so much of his life out of fear, and when she either abandoned him or died being put in an orphanage and then later the lodging house made him feel as if he had no control over himself or his life. but being able to play with someone’s emotions where he’s in control is a near soothing power trip that lets him know he still has something going for him, at least. If all he had in a touch world is a nice face and smooth voice, may aswel let it be your weapon

- this man is an idiot but he’s a persuasive idiot. He can butter you up into jumping into a pool with all your clothes on but can’t lie for shit. He’s always been found out on anything he hides or lies about but usually the poor shmuck who finds out ends up getting roped in somehow.

- Modern au headcannons; Loves shitty romance Tv finds it the height of comedy

- also really loves horror

- Deapite his difficulties in the past with food he loves to bake goods when he’s stressed out and packages them all cute too.

I listened to the cast album in full for the first time during the summer of 2020, I had listened to a few songs every now and again previously but never in full and I became obsessed immediately and then it launched a snowball effect and now it is all I talk about.

🎀 High Times, Hard Times or That’s Rich?

I like That’s Rich more mostly because the first time I heard it my only thought was that it was an absolute banger and I listened to it in repeat for DAYS. Then when I watched 92sies and heard High Times, Hard Times it just didn’t slap as hard so That’s Rich has always been my favourite.

👀 Any Cut Songs That Deserved To Stay?

92sies isn’t my preferred version of Newsies but I love The Truth About The Moon. A lot. The News Is Getting Better is also so much better than The Bottom Line. I feel like it makes Pulitzer seem like less of a cartoon-ish villain.

💭 Any Headcanons?

I have very many headcannons but here’s some of my favourites.

Jack is very touch starved, despite being very physical with all of his friends. He’s always touching people in one way when he talks with them. Think hands on shoulders, sitting close so they are touching, that sort of stuff. But still he’s seriously touch starved so Davey makes sure to always hug him or hold him close when they’re together and especially when they’re in private.

In a modern au, Jack, Crutchie and Race are siblings, all adopted from foster care by Medda (it’s basic but I love it). Jack and Race frequently gush about their crushes or the partners and Crutchie just sits there and drinks hot chocolate in aroace.

Crutchie drinks exclusively hot chocolate. He’s got a massive sweet tooth but denies it.

Buttons and Elmer are basically platonic soulmates and I will die on that hill.

👔 Favourite Newsies Outfit?

Okay, so I have only seen one picture of this outfit but I am obsessed and will be making it to wear when I go see west endsies.

The costume in question is of course this one;

Modern Headcannon no 1 :

Sarah Jacobs loves photography.

While not being able to afford any kind of super fancy camera or anything, Sarah fell in love with the old family digital camera from a pretty young age. From family events to making little stories with her brothers through photos, Sarah was always able to create her own masterpieces. She always felt proud of this fact.

Days when Esther would take the kids to the pharmacy were always the best, because Sarah would scrimp save her money to have her photos printed. Every event was documented, from David loosing his first tooth to Les' first birthday. She became the designated family photographer.

Eventually, Sarah started taking more and more photos of the city. She wrote stories about her snapshots, made sure they were dated. She created beautiful photo albums and scrap books. Searching through thrift stores and coming across a disposable camera with film still in it was a golden opportunity. And suddenly, when David brought home a new friend, Sarah's camera role filled up even faster than before.

Photos of new friends, memories to be kept forever, surviving through film and tape. Random selfies on her walls, full family portraits to be hung proudly in the living room, prints of beautiful sunsets and natures.

But one thing Sarah would always photograph was the sunrise. Waking up early during the most quiet moments of the morning to take a few shots of something she can completely relate to, even if she didn't understand why. Whether the shot was blurry or totally clear, Sarah kept her little collection of sunrises close to her heart.

Modern AU Ike headcanons

Full name: Isaac Reed

Okay so he likes cats

He really really likes cats

It's probably a special interest

He knows all the breeds and the proper names for all the colors

He has a cat he always draws in the margins of his papers called Bonesy

(He has no bones)

His interest in reading started with Warrior Cats

When he was little he had a teeny black cat he named Dr. Doofensmirtz

(her first name was Katie because his mom did NOT want to call her Dr. Doofensmirtz)

She scratched him once

He cried for hours

He was like seven

He has a few of those ~aesthetic~ button up shirts with the cat theme

Ike HAS seen Cats the musical

He thought it was okay

If there was a production going on he'd definitely try out for it

Even though he can't dance for shit

He can kinda sing though

He started doing chorus in middle school

Didn't leave because he had friends in there and it was a safe space for him

(Mike took it for a year for an 'easy credit' but dropped out)

Ike keeps his hair short so he doesn't have to mess with it and so people don't mistake him for Mike, who keeps his long

He's Very Blind and has to wear glasses

He wears these big circle glasses because He Thinks He Looks Good In Them

Modern Mush Heahcannon

Ok so

This boy loves dogs

Loves them

Especially German Shepards

He ends up getting one on a whim

“Um…Mush that dog ain’t apartment friendly”

“It’s still a pup”

“It’s gonna get bigger”

“I’ll worry about that later. Look how cute he is!”

The Newsies just stare at Mush as he gives the pup a belly rub

All wondering who’s gonna break the news to him

About a few moments later Kid Blink is the one to say, “it’s a girl, Mush,”

Mush soon realizes his mistake and changes the pup’s name form River to Rainy

Within a few minutes everyone is petting or playing with Rainy

And so, Rainy Meyers was the newest member of the Newsies family

Rainy and Mush were like two peas in a pod.

Rarely saw one without the other

One day while playing while at the park Rainy gets off her leash

Mush freaks out and is chasing the growing pup

He eventually finds her getting petted by a pretty girl

But Mush didn’t know that

Yet anyways
