School Newspaper AU

Set in the present time, all the Newsies are a part of the school newspaper when they notice that the head teacher, Mr Pulitzer, has set up a new anonymous advice column called "The Bottom Line." Nobody knows who's the one writing everything and have been desperately trying to figure out who it is.

Jack, the cartoonist, has ended up becoming friends with a member of the exhibition committee, David. Though if you were to ask Katherine, Jack's best friend and head reporter of the paper, he most definitely has a crush on him.

As The Bottom Line grows more popular, and Jack starts to notice how distant and stressed David's becoming, he starts to put the pieces together and realises the pressure Davey's under by Mr Pulitzer to keep the column running with no help whatsoever.

When he looks around at the whole newspaper committee, he realises the stress everybody is under. The only photographer, Racetrack, is constantly running around the school to take pictures of everything he can, Katherine's running out of ideas for headlines, Crutchie and Albert, the editors have the shortest deadlines ever and none of them have any help in these positions.

So he declares a strike. They're striking until Mr Pulitzer gives them the help necessary to keep the newspaper running.

In the ‘I want everyone to think I’m stronger and tougher than I am to avoid being infantilised for emotion. Okay, but why am I actually obsessed?

Crutchie as a film maker who is watching all of his friends get sick and start dying. David as an angsty song writer, Jack as a crackhead stripper, Spot as a rebellious genius, Race as a gender-fluid drag queen, Katherine as an eccentric performer, Sarah as her manager, Morris as the asshole that ditched Davey and Crutchie and also dated Jack and probably treated him like absolute shit.

I love this AU. I think Crutchie dates Katherine and then Kath met Sarah through Crutchie’s roommate, Davey and left him but Crutchie isn’t sure he ever loved her to begin with.

Race is the only person Spot sees as worthy of fighting for. Spot is normally someone who just likes to mess around, but Race isn’t just some fuck buddy, he’s the love of Spot’s life and Spot is the love of Race’s life.

Jack is just a huge mess which I absolutely love.

“POOL” Les cried, excitedly when the Jacob’s family had arrived at the hotel they were staying at. “Les, it’s like, nine in the morning and we JUST got here.” Sarah told the boy, who’d stared at the hot tub like it was a piece of candy.

David Jacobs, the taller one to Sarah’s left, had laughed at the hyperactive kid that was his brother. In all honesty, he just wanted a day where no one talks to him whatsoever. He doesn’t think that’s what’s going to happen, but it’s fun to dream. And when that dream gets shipped away on the Reality Boat, you say ‘goddamit’ because that realization hits you. That realization hit David when they’d gotten to their room, and the people above them were jumping around or something.

This was going to be the longest week EVER.

Jack Kelly, on the other hand, was having the best time of his life. Race, his brother, was jumping on the bed like some kind of animal and he didn’t mind. Charlie sat in the corner, chastising Race for being rude to the people downstairs.

He wasn’t unhappy, he was… unsatisfied. Jack just couldn’t find out what to paint. It had been three days and nothing. No inspiration. There’d have to be a miracle to get Jack to paint.

“Why don’t you paint Santa Fe? You’ve done it millions of times before” Charlie suggested after Race FINALLY stopped monkeying around.

“It’s just, not what this canvas needs right now. Charlie? I think I have writers block” Jack said after a moment of silence.

There was a gasp that went beyond the room. ‘Dang it, these walls are so thin’ Jack thought. ‘I’m gonna alert the authorities if someone can get in my phone because I talked to loud.’

“Did I just hear the Great Jack Kelly, lost his natural aptitude for a day?!” Albert says in the room next to them.

“Well, Jack-be-nimble-Jack-be-quick lost his ability to paint!” Spot laughed.

“Shut up, it’ll be back in about an hour!” Charlie retorted and the others stopped. “But seriously, why are these walls so thin?!” Spot asked.

Jack was told by someone on the plane, Katherine Plumber? Well, who ever it was said that the man who owns this hotel is rich, and he basically tries to buy the cheapest stuff. Bless Katherine’s heart, because he now has a witness when he goes to court. +=+=+

David could hear the people above him talking about ‘artist block’ or something like that. But who is Jack, and what the heck’s going on up there? Guess he’ll never know.

Race is the type of guy to create a detailed guide of how he’s going to cheat on a test. Like he goes through the course syllabus and specifically picks out the topic they’re currently learning about, then looks at the course textbook and memorizes all the important events, dates and vocabulary. He writes them down in his notebook, adds annotations, jots down the causes & effects of each event and looks over everything the night before. Then when Test Day comes, he’ll know all the answers and the teacher won’t be any the wiser!

i do have to confess that one of my favorite jack spot dynamics to rotate in my brain is jack being a few years older than spot and knowing him in the refuge/as kids and spot having a Massive crush on him and being extremely pissed about that fact years later when they re-meet/reconnect. he doesn't have a crush anymore he's just angry that it ever happened. jack wasn't a jerk and was in fact completely oblivious to it so there's no reason for spot to be so peeved but he's steaming at the ears every time he remembers being infatuated with jack kelly.

Modern AU Race who is constantly forgetting to wear his retainer at night, and it gets to a point where Jack will just call him at random points in the night to put them in to get the point across.

One night, Spot slept over for a movie night, and at 3am, when both of them were asleep, Racetracks phone started ringing super loud. When Spot asked who on earth was ringing him at 3am, Race had to explain himself while he shoved his retainer in.

Spot has never let him live it down, but he has started reminding Race too.
