you have some knowledge of classic hong kong kung fu movies, right? like bruce lee, maybe john woo and jackie chan, I'm not really sure who the big stars are. do you have any you particularly recommend? I'd like to watch a few
I'm not actually an expert on this (or anything) and my experience is somewhat scattershot, which makes me wonder what I've even watched, hmm.
Bruce Lee, I've only actually watched The Big Boss in full as a movie, but seen enough clips of the others that they feel familiar; honestly despite the way he towers over the field I think he's more valuable as a conceptual inspiration than a maker of actual movies.
Jackie Chan is obviously incredible; his early movies might be a little cheap and silly but they're far more advanced than anything Bruce Lee had the chance to do and he made so damn many of them! he's not just a kung fu guy but a master of physical comedy, a modern Buster Keaton, and yes obviously the stunts wow.
John Woo fills in the "charismatic gun-fu" and "fluttering doves" side of Hong Kong movies and those are surely worth dipping into at least a little, especially if you appreciate Chow Yun-fat.
Stephen Chow is a personal favourite; a very funny comedian but his comedies include Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu, as well as the two part Journey to the West parody (Chinese Odyssey) which is fantastic.
Leslie Cheung wasn't a kung fu star but A Chinese Ghost Story by Tsui Hark is still the best version of that movie ever made.
oh and while we're on kung fu comedy, Eagle Shooting Heroes from 1993 is the funniest damn thing and has the best scene of toad-style kung fu put to film; allegedly made in a rush while Ashes of Time ran over budget, it borrows most of the cast and has both Tony's Leung and Jackie Cheung as well Brigitte Lin and Joey Wong and Maggie Cheung.
hmm actually these are all kung fu comedy recs but kung fu lends itself naturally to comedy (and the best comedies have a solid emotional core); Tin Ha Mou Seung (Chinese Odyssey 2002, no relation to the other film with a similar name) is a hilarious spoof of Wong Kar-wai films and classic Shaw Brothers movies like The Kingdom and the Beauty and The Butterfly Lovers, it's great!
oh turns out there is another film titled Chinese Odyssey from 2022, which was Ng Man-tat's last movie before he died of liver cancer; what a pity, that guy was great with Stephen Chow and made more than fifty movies in his career.
okay I'm rambling here and there's tons of other kung fu movie possibilities I haven't covered, like 36th Chamber of Shaolin or the first Ip Man movie, Donnie Yen movies in general, oh and anything with Sammo Hung in it, just go watch some movies already!

What is the correct French, not Americanized French pronunciation of Lestat du Lioncourt? What is its meaning?
This is a tough one, because technically, it's not a real name at all, so there is no "correct" pronunciation.
"Lestat" itself comes originally from a typo; Anne Rice was writing him as “Lestan”, after her husband Stan. "Le" being French for "the," and she literally just typed it with a “t” for "Lestat" incorrectly, so she has said. 😅 Later in canon, Lestat does use “Lestan” as an alias, and Rose knows him as Uncle Lestan, so that’s brought back.
Try looking up "Lestat" and you'll get something like: "Lestat in the French origin, means Estate, status, a name of the character in a novel Vampire Chronicles. Name Lestat is of French origin and is a Boy name."
Because in French, literally, it means the state. But that wasn't Anne's intention.
I’m going to link you to an older post with some more thoughts on his name… and one of our fandom’s native French speakers (who is also a language teacher!), @takemetocoffin-or-losemeforever, even made a video pronouncing Louis’s name (and Lestat’s!), but that’s missing now 😂, however, they wrote here:
The good side of pronouncing Lestat in the non-Germanic way is that you can make stupid puns with the determiner “les” in French. And that’s priceless.
More seriously, since I saw the movie before reading the books, I pronounce the final “T” of Lestat, while it’s usually not the case in French. So, theoretically, in modern French, the pronunciation would be something like “lesta”. But it sounds kinda silly, and there is an awful lot of exceptions to the “t” rule. Furthermore, “Lestat” hugely looks like the Occitan word “estat”, prononced “S-taT”. And guess where Occitan, an old language still used nowadays, is spoken? In south France, which includes Auvergne. So, in a very twisted way, “LestaT” as an old french name is making sense. At least if you accept the idea that “the state” is a decent name for a person.
From what I recall of their video, it’s:
LisTa(t): with less emphasis on the second “t”
de: “dih,” means “of"
Lee-ahn-core: with a bit more emphasis on the “r”
“de Lioncourt,” is also totally Anne’s idea. “de” in French is “of”. Lioncourt is the family name, and it’s barely French, “lion” is the masculine spelling for the same word in English, and “court” or “cours” is the French for “court,” the more accurate phrasing would be “cour des lions.” “Court” has a few meanings but it probably means “ a quadrangular area,” since last names are often about places, but I don’t know for a fact that she didn’t mean it in the other meanings of “court”: “be involved with romantically, typically with the intention of marrying.
“; or “a tribunal presided over by a judge, judges, or a magistrate in civil and criminal cases.” because interestingly enough, Lestat does those things, too!

EDIT #1: Yes, in canon, there are several instances in which it is pronounced Les-Dot. Anne Rice’s choice in the pronunciation there.

Zuko: as anyone who’s ever read one of my modern fics knows, I always give him a dragon or a phoenix or both. I also like him having flames up one arm and a Blue Spirit tattoo. I also think he’d have some kind of sun tattoo
Katara: she’d have an impressive tat of the Painted Lady on her thigh, the lunar phases up her forearm, and the Water Tribe symbol on her bicep
Sokka: He’d have a tribal wolf and a boomerang. Maybe one of those cool outlines of a mountain range
Toph: she’d have a sick tattoo of a boulder. Does it matter that she can’t see it? No, it does not.
Aang: he’d probably have the Air Nomad character for enlightenment or spirituality.

Summary: Azula, Ty lee and Mai decide to get matching tattoos on Valentine's day. Aang ends up being Azula's tattoo artist.

Ty Lee bounced ahead of Azula into the tattoo shop. Mai and Azula followed her in, with much less enthusiasm.
By the time Mai and Azula made it inside, Ty Lee was flipping through a portfolio and chatting with the girl at the front desk. Ty Lee chirped, "Well we decided fuck valentine's day, let's get tattoos!" "More like you decided," Mai responded in a bored tone. Ty Lee laughed and then the girl at the counter called out, “Jet, Snoozles, Twinkle Toes- your appointments are here.”
A tall lanky guy confidently strode up to the desk and peered over the girl’s shoulder, “Azula?” She recognized him from the video chat when they had first discussed her tattoo. She walked forward and followed him down the small into a room that was painted a nauseating shade of orange.
He sat on a low rolling chair and she hopped up onto the tattoo chair. His wide grey eyes looked up at her, “So I was looking over what you requested, a blue lotus tattoo?” She nodded. He was easy and relaxed, “You’re still wanting it on your inner forearm?”
She flipped her forearm and pointed to the center, “Here.” He nodded, “I think it’ll look perfect. Let me show you what I drew up.” He easily rolled over to his computer and she peeked over from the chair. It was better than what she had expected, but instead she replied, “That’s fine.”
He spun around and looked at her, “Is there something you want me to change? It’s gonna be on you forever.” She brushed a bang behind her ear, “No, it’s fine. We can proceed.” He almost looked like he wanted to ask again, but instead rolled back to the computer. He printed up the design and then pulled on latex gloves.
He smiled up at her and said, “You can sit back and rest your arm on the arm rest, we’re gonna be here for a while.” She did as she was told and watched him roll over to a cabinet and grab supplies.
He rolled back to her, “Alright, so I’m just gonna disinfect you here.” She didn’t flinch as he rubbed down her inner forearm with a cool alcohol swab. She watched closely as he applied the outline to her skin. He looked up at her, “Alright, go look in the mirror and make sure it’s exactly what you want.”
She bounced down from the chair and walked over to the mirror. The flower was centered on her inner forearm and it looked like it was meant to be there. She turned and sat back down. To appease him, she said, “It’s perfect.”
“Great!” He responded. “Let’s get this show on the road.” She settled back into the chair and heard him start up the tattoo gun. He asked, “Is this your first tattoo?” She looked up at the orange ceiling. “Yes, it is.” “Oh, cool, cool.” She bit her lip as she felt the first prick of pain.
He was bent over her arm intently at work, but his voice was carefree as he asked, “So why a blue lotus?” She really would rather sit here in silence, but she answered, “My friends and I always talked about matching tattoos. The lotus has meaning for all of us. I’m getting blue, Ty Lee is getting pink and Mai is getting red.”
He nodded along, “That’s so cool. Me and the other artist Sokka, we have matching tattoos, but you know what- actually we don’t need to talk about that.” A voice called from down the hall called, “Aang, don’t be ashamed of our bro tats!” He looked up at her, “Do you mind if I put some music on. I swear I can’t get any privacy here.”
The girl at the front desk yelled back, “The fuck do you need privacy for?” Aang rolled his eyes and Azula laughed, “Sure, go ahead.” He wiped down what he had done so far and then looked around, “Can you grab my phone and pick something on Spotify? It’s right behind you.”
She reached with her free arm and swiped open his phone, which already had the app open. She clicked on the playlist that said Tattoo Beatz. As she placed it down Lupe Fiasco played in the background. He waited for her to get settled and then went back to work, “Good choice.” She smirked, “You have your playlists pretty easily labeled.”
She watched him intently as he worked on the outline of the lotus flower. She looked around the room she was in to get her mind off of the pain. There was a happy buddha up on a shelf, plants were scattered all over the place and inspirational quotes were on the walls. She looked down at the artist as he was crouched intently working on her tattoo.
He was tall and skinny, but he had enough muscles that they flexed as he moved the tattoo gun. He was wearing a white tank top with the sleeves cut off and orange cargo pants. He was so different from her, in black jeans and a burgundy long sleeve crop top.
The tattoo gun hummed. She studied him as he worked, his face full of concentration and his bottom lip caught between his teeth. His body was covered in tattoos. It wasn’t haphazardly done, but seemed intentional and well thought out. She leaned forward without realizing, to get a better look at the blue pattern that covered him.
She was startled as his chipper voice disrupted her thoughts, “I spent a few years abroad, learning traditional tattoo methods.” “Oh,” she answered. She flushed a bit at being caught looking at him. He looked up at her, about to say something, when Ty Lee bounced into the room and poked her head over Aang’s shoulder, “Ohhh it’s so pretty.”
Aang wiped away excess ink and gently tapped Azula’s arm, “We’ve been at it for a minute. Take a break.” He unfurled himself from his crouched over position, stretching to his full height, his long arms stretching up towards the ceiling. Azula’s eyes scanned over him, until she felt Ty Lee yank her out of her chair, “Let’s go see Mai’s!”
It actually did feel good to get out of the chair. The girls walked into the small room. Mai was flipping her pocket knife with her free hand as the artist intently worked on her piece. Mai’s was the darkest, the lines straighter and more severe than the other two girls, but each of their tattoos were beginning to reflect their personalities.
Ty Lee and Azula each went back to their designated chairs. Aang snapped on a new pair of gloves and got back to work. He said thoughtfully,” You’re a really good canvas. You’ve got a great skin tone for colored work and the forearm is one of my favorite spots- not too much pain for you and I don’t have to be twisted in some awful position.” Azula’s brow furrowed, “Does that happen a lot?” His grey eyes went wide, “Oh yeah. People ask for the weirdest stuff. I’m just glad that you didn’t ask for an infinity symbol or something. Not that I have anything against it- just gets repetitive after awhile.”
She couldn’t hold back as she asked, “What’s the worst tattoo you’ve ever done?” He looked up at her mischievously as he switched to blue ink, “Worst in what way? Like worst design I’ve ever done? Worst thing someone has asked for?” She couldn’t help but be pulled in by him, “All of them.” He laughed easily, “Well, every tat Sokka asks for is easily the worst thing I’ve ever done.” A “HEY!” rang out from down the hall.
She looked around the room, at the decor, then at him and asked, “Do you think a lotus tattoo is offensive? You seem more spiritual than I am.” His brows pulled together, “I wouldn’t tattoo something I thought was offensive. I know some people think it’s crude, but you’re not doing it just because you’re into yoga this week. You’re doing it because it reminds you of who you are and your friends. I think that’s really sweet.”
Azula actually outright laughed, “No one’s called me sweet before.” He looked up at her, “Bullshit. Your friend, the peppy one, I’m sure she has.” Azula smiled at the description, “Nope. Never.” He shrugged and focused as he used the gun to spread white ink, “Well, I think you are. I mean you’re spending Valentine’s day with your friends. Seems pretty sweet to me.”
She rolled her eyes, “I was forced here.” “Oh really? ‘Cause we talked about this tattoo like a week ago. What would you be doing today if you hadn’t been forced here?” She looked down, “Probably watching cheesy movies with Mai and Ty Lee.” “See! You are sweet! Spending Valentine’s day with your friends.”
She sighed in fake annoyance. She really couldn’t be too annoyed when he was giving her a bright lopsided grin. He wiped down her arm for the last time and said, “Go have a look.” She slid out of the chair and when she saw the design in the mirror, she had never seen anything so beautiful, and it was a part of her now.
The flower looked so real, so delicate. The blue, white and yellow hues all blended seamlessly. He did beadwork that hung down from each petal and connected them. He had recommended it during Azula’s consult and she was enthralled by it. He stood behind her in the mirror, “I think a blue lotus suits you.” She was still staring in awe of it, “It means perfection of wisdom.” He added, “Lotus flowers symbolize a lot of things to different cultures. I like the idea that they symbolize the human condition. We can be planted in the dirtiest waters, but still grow to be beautiful. That we can grow past a difficult beginning and make a beautiful life.”
She normally would have made a snide comment, but she was thrown off as she saw the genuine look of interest on his face. Instead she softly replied, “I’ll remember that.”
He blushed and said, “Let’s get you bandaged up.” Azula realized she would miss how delicately he touched her. How good he smelled. This was silly, she had only known him a few hours.
He talked her through the aftercare and she took diligent mental notes. He easily slid back in his chair and scribbled on a post it, “Here’s my number, in case you have any questions or need anything. You can always come by so I can see how you’re doing. I’d be happy to take you to lunch sometime.”
The small paper felt heavy in her hands, but she nodded and slipped it in her pocket, “That would be great.”

Aang watched the group of girls leave the shop. As the door shut behind them, he heard the girl in pink shriek at Azula, “HE GAVE YOU WHAT?”
Toph rolled her eyes as she closed out the register, “You’ve got it bad, don’t you Twinkle Toes?”

Fanfic I'm reading, has Nazis. Specifically, space Nazis.
Descendants of OG Nazis who went into space.
The writer postponed a side story that would involve said Nazis because Nazis are a 'modern problem' and require careful handling.
They're not.
They're really not.
Even if I want to be really charitable and say neo-Nazis are a big concern, those aren't the same as real Nazis, and they still aren’t a real threat. Unless you're the type of NPC who treats neo-Nazis and real Nazis as synonyms.
Which may well be the case, considering the SocJus stuff that constantly comes up in the story. Specifically, the prominent theme of "sex slavery is bad, okay?" The POV lead does have a canonical “chauvinist” bias in favor of protecting women, but we only just got to see an Original Character pervert dude who likes athletic teen boys.
And, of course, absolutely no pervert OC women, IIRC. And the Boys guy doesn't get much of anything from our lead, except thinking 'wow, you and your entourage are awfully homoerotic!"
Even though he claims to be against harm to kids, AND was psychosexually manipulated as a teenage boy himself.
Oh, and the lead character just told one of his 'brides' - he wasn't married to her by choice, and his predecessor basically used them as sex slaves - that he would never touch her without her 'explicit, affirmative consent'.
I'm pretty sure that feminist term, didn't exist at the time the story is set. Also, the character's canonically not a feminist. Kind of the opposite. As he admits.
And then there was a time two canon ladies in the military got into a room together and started talking about the challenges of women in the military. Not plot relevant, not character development, it was just...there. I want to say one of the characters is feminist-ish in canon, but I'm not really familiar. Maybe it's justified.
Anyway, that side story I mentioned? One of the POV characters is a female character dealing with the US military who walks around basically naked. She's also gorgeous, athletic, and covered in tats and piercings for religious reasons. And she's irritated by the dudes who find her hot.
I don't know if this is commentary on slut-shaming or something or just a bad joke.
So the military posts female guards. And wouldn't you know it, the one who's there during the scene happens to be eyeing our lead in a...less than professional way. Again, no plot relevance (so far), no character development, unless 'the POV girl doesn't really care' counts.
Also, the lead character of the main story? His reaction to encountering a Space Nazi (or Spazi) was just plain disgust. The guy regularly mocks beings who could crush him like a bug in a hydraulic press built by Tim “the Toolman “Taylor, but he doesn’t make fun of Nazis. Not a single Mel Brooks reference.
It's a good overall story, but this kind of stuff adds up, like a bit of popcorn shell stuck between your gums and your tooth. I’m also reading the Jack Reacher novel Echo Burning, and Lee Child really goes hard on ‘racism against immigrants, legal or illegal, is bad, m’kay?’

Kim Eunsook’s rechte Kontaktlinse saß nicht richtig. Beziehungsweise war bestimmt ein doofes Staubkorn darunter oder so. Jedenfalls konnte sie sich, seit ihr Fahrer das gusseiserne Tor passiert hatte, nicht auf die idyllische Szenerie des ehemaligen Olympiageländes konzentrieren.
Sonnenstrahlen brachen durch mehr oder weniger exotische Baumkronen, der Mercedes fuhr geschmeidig in einer Reihe aus teuren Wagen, emsig die Hügel hinauf. In der Ferne sah man das Meer glitzern, es lag frisch und still unter der Morgensonne. Die gläserne Caféteria des Gebäudes reflektierte bis in die weite Ferne die Sonnenstrahlen, auf dem Campusgelände direkt um das Haupthaus waren hier und da Studenten zu sehen. Es war erfrischend, keine Uniformen mehr sehen zu müssen - auch wenn es bedeutete, dass man sich eventuell mehr Gedanken darüber machen musste, was man anzog.
Mit einem genervten Schnalzen blinzelte Eunsook ein letztes Mal, gerade rechtzeitig, um die Auffahrt mit der niedrigen Mauer drumherum betrachten zu können. Eingebettet in Bäume, mit dem Rücken zum Hügel, erstreckte sich ein modernes, helles Gebäude mit einem flachen Anbau aus ockerfarbenem Stein. Während sich vorn Rosen rankten und hier und da versetzt romantische Blumenkübel, Durchgänge und Efeu den Eingangsbereich einfassten, waren hinter dem niedrigen Anbau Palmen über dem Dach zu erspähen.
Da es noch früh am Morgen war hörte man nur ein paar erste Vögel und Grillen, doch das Schlagen von mehreren Türen und die lauten Stimmen von Son Chaeyoung und Kim Dahyun, die sich übertrieben enthusiastisch begrüßten, hörte man sicher bis zur nächsten Villa, die sich einen knappen Kilometer weiter die Straße runter befinden musste.
“Aaah, Chewie! Was ist mit deinen Haaren passiert?”, rief eine viel zu wache Minatozaki Sana mit ihrer nasalen Stimme, sie hing bereits an der gebürtigen Taiwanesin, die mit reservierter Miene einen Schritt zurück taumelte und verlegen den strawberryblonden Schopf der Älteren tätschelte.
“Farbe”, antwortete sie nur stumpf und warf Myoui Mina, die gerade aus ihrem Wagen stief, einen hilfesuchenden Blick zu. Diese wandte sich nur mit einem verkniffenen Grinsen ab, fand sich dann allerdings selbst in einer haarsträubend intensiven Umarmung wieder.
“Minariii~”, quietsche die Älteste, Im Nayeon, verspielt, doch ihre Augen funkelten diabolisch. Sie hatte die Türen hinter sich offen gelassen und mit lautem Bellen machte nun Momo’s Norwich Terrier, Boo, auf sich aufmerksam. Er nahm seine Aufgabe als Empfangskomitee sehr ernst und lief schwanzwedelt reihum und schleckte den Mädchen emsig die Knöchel ab, bis er gestreichelt wurde.
Auch Eunsook ging grinsend in die Knie und kraulte dem Hahn im Korbe der TWICE Frat liebevoll den Kopf. Eine verschlafene Momo tauchte in der Türe auf und klatschte eher mäßig konsequent in die Hände: “Oi, Boo! Komm her, na komm schon?!”
“ENDLICH seid ihr da~”, trällerte Park Jihyo hinter ihr und klatschte aufgeregt in die Hände, “na kommt schon rein! Es gibt Frühstück! Für Sie haben wir natürlich auch etwas bereits gestellt”, wandte sie sich zum Ende hin an zwei der Fahrer, die ihr lächelnd zunickten.
Und unter Geplauder und Gekicher betraten die Mädchen ihre neue Behausung. Eunsook erkannte Jisuk’s Cap und hing sich von hinten über ihre Schulter, erschrocken zuckte sie zusammen. “Na”, machte sie und grinste, Jisuk machte etwas luftleer “Na” zurück.
Momo war bereits seit einem Jahr hier während Sana und Mina früher angekommen waren und somit war Tzuyu die einzige Austauschschülerin, die das Haus noch nicht live gesehen hatte. Dahyun und Chaeyoung hatten sich links und rechts bei dem großen Mädchen eingehängt und zeigten ihr alles, während der Rest das Handgepäck auf die bereits eingerichteten Zimmer brachte.
Auf dem Weg nach unten kam Jisuk und Eunsook Yunhee entgegen, sie grinste und Eunsook stieß sie mit der Schulter an: “Na, Unnie, nicht geschlafen?” “Haha. Führ das Gespräch doch mit meinen Augenringen weiter…” Eunsook kicherte und stieß Jisuk mit der Schulter an, die grinsend die Augen verdrehte.
Die Küche, die aussah wie ein pfirsichfarbener Traum geträumt von wahlweise Marie Antoinette oder Jane Austen, hatte eine große, helle Tafel in der Mitte. Nach und nach trudelten sie ein und nahmen Platz. Es gab ein großzügiges Brunch und sie aßen, allen voran Momo und Nayeon, die von allen einen Happen anhaben wollte. Mina klopfte gerade Sana auf den Rücken, die vor Lachen beinahe erstickt wäre da sich Dahyun und Eunsook ein hitzköpfiges Imitationsbattle lieferten, da klatschte Jihyo erneut begeistert in die Hände.
“OKE OKE! Alle mal herhören~”
Dahyun beugte sich in Sana’s Richtung und machte unter tatkräftigem Einsatz von fliegenden Brotkrumen: “Psssscht!” , was Sana nur noch mehr zum Lachen brachte.
“Seid gefälligst leise, wenn eure Mutter spricht”, schnaubte Jeongyeon, musste aber selbst kichern, als Nayeon ihr schnaubend auf die Schulter schlug.
Jihyo zog die Brauen hoch und sah mit ihrem breiten Grinsen und runden Augen aus wie eine besonders passiv-aggressive Lokomotive aus dem allgemeinen Kinderfernsehen.
“Hört mal! Ich freue mich, dass wir endlich alle hier sind! Bis auf’s letzte Zimmer ist das Haus nun voll und ich hab mir einige Gedanken gemacht, wie wir unsere Frat nennen werden…”
“Frat”, wiederholte Jisuk, sie wirkte nervös. Eunsook tätschelte ihr beruhigend den Arm, allerdings hatte sie selbst eine zuckende Braue: “Jaaah, das heißt soviel wie Party-Meile, nur als fester Ort.”
“Wir sind der Club”, klassifizierte Yunhee trocken.
“Wenn du nicht abschließt, kotzen Leute auf deine Kissen aus spanischer Seide”, brachte Chaeyoung es ziemlich charmant auf den Punkt.
“Oh”, machte Jisuk ernüchtert und schien kurz zu überlegen, bevor sie die Schultern zuckte. “Fein. Was steht denn zur Auswahl?”
Jihyo’s Brauen wanderten wieder in die Höhe und sie beugte sich mit verschränkten Händen ein wenig vor. “Ne?”
“Es gibt keine Auswahl, God Jihyo hat entschieden~”, zwitscherte Nayeon und Momo hinter ihr mimte stimmlich einen Heiligenschein. Jeongyeon knallte die Handfläche dramatisch auf die Tischfläche.
“TWICE!”
Die Jüngeren warfen sich ratlose Blicke zu. Chaeyoung blinzelte träge, Dahyun’s Miene war ein versteinertes Grinsen und Tzuyu machte passenderweise einfach nur “Eh?”
“Ehhhh?”, zog Sana es etwas in die Länge und beugte sich auf den Tisch, ihr Haar verfing sich am Ende in einem aufwendig gegossenen Kerzenständer.
“Naja, die Leute werden nicht nur einmal herkommen, wenn sie einmal auf einer Party hier waren.”
“Sondern… zweimal”, schloss Mina tatkräftig nickend und hielt verstärkend zwei Finger hoch, “...Twice.”
Für einen kurzen Moment war es still. Dann wieherten Dahyun, Eunsook und Chaeyoung los. Nayeon, Jeongyeon und Jisuk ahmten unentwegt Jihyo’s Enthusiasmus und dann Mina’s nüchterne Wiederholung nach. Yunhee und Momo warfen sich einen Blick und schnaubten belustigt.
Nach einer Weile hatten sie sich beruhigt und waren bereit, Jihyo wieder zuzuhören.
“OKE OKE”, begann sie wieder, die Wangen diesmal etwas wärmer, und warf sich die aschblonden Beachwaves über die Schulter, “also nochmal: ihr seid nun alle stolze Mitglieder einer Frat. Es gibt drei-” und hier hielt sie bestärkend drei ihrer kleinen Finger in die Luft, “-und zwar uns, TWICE-”, hier war vereinzelt erneut Gekicher zu hören, “-und dann zwei männliche. BANGTAN ist den Hügel rechts runter, MONSTA den Hügel links.”
“Bang- eh?”, machte Tzuyu erneut, inzwischen lag ihre Stirn in angestrengten Falten.
“Monsta? Echt jetzt? Unser Name ist Premium!”, meinte Dahyun plötzlich sehr überzeugt und verschränkte mit einem heftigen Nicken die Arme vor der Brust und sah dabei wie ein älterer Herr aus.
Jihyo blinzelte mit einem unbeirrten Lächeln einige Male hektisch, bevor sie erneut die Hände zusammenschlug: “BANGTAN, MONSTA und TWICE also!”
“Wer is’n da so dabei?”, fragte Eunsook und rieb schon wieder an dem Auge herum, in dem die Kontaktlinse nicht ganz das tat, was sie sollte.
“Ich schicke die Mitgliederliste gleich in den Gruppenchat”, versprach Jihyo und atmete tief ein, “und heute brauche ich eure tatkräftige Unterstützung, denn als einzige weibliche Frat dürfen wir die erste Party des neuen Schuljahres schmeißen~”
Daraufhin klatschten und jubelten sie, bis auf Tzuyu, die völlig lost schien, und Yunhee und Eunsook, die sich einen bedeutsamen Blick zuwarfen.
Sie planten gemeinsam, wer was vorbereitete, und zerstreuten sich dann wieder. Jisuk und Eunsook folgten Yunhee auf ihr Zimmer und sie ließen sich alle rittlings auf das große Bett fallen. Jisuk verband sich gerade mit dem Bluetooth Speaker während Eunsook sich auf den Bauch rollte. Yunhee und sie sahen sich an, dann seufzte Eunsook und zog ihr Handy aus der hinteren Tasche ihrer Jeans und öffnete den TWICE Gruppenchat.
Mit einem theatralischen Räuspern las sie vor:
“Also. In der MONSTA Frat sind Son Hyunwoo genannt Shownu, Chae Hyungwon, Lee Minhyuk, Yoo Kihyun, ...Lee Jooheon...oh… und Im Changkyun? Sind das-”
“-ich glaub ja.”, murmelte Yunhee und deutete erneut auf den Screen des Handys.
Eunsook wandte sich wieder der weiteren Gruppe zu: “Und in der Frat mit dem charmanten Namen namens BANGTAN sind… ach du Scheiße…”
“...jap.”
“..Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Kim… Kim N-Namjoon…”
Jisuk und Yunhee vermieden geflissentlich, sich anzusehen, als Eunsook königlich über den Namen stolperte.
“...Jung Hoseok… Park Jimin und Jeon Jeongguk.”
“Ausschließlich Ehrenmänner”, schloss Yunhee spöttisch, Eunsook schnaubte, seufzte und ließ ihr Handy auf den Boden fallen um das Gesicht in den Laken zu vergraben und einen dumpfen, theatralischen Schrei auszustoßen.
“Ja, allerdings”, murmelte Yunhee und bei dem Gedanken, all die bekannten Gesichter heute abend in ihrem Heim zu beherbergen, wurde ihr ein bisschen übel.
“Also… ihr scheint ja nicht so gut auf die Kerle zu sprechen zu sein. Darf man fragen, warum?”, fragte Jisuk vorsichtig in die Stille.
Diesmal stieß Yunhee ein theatralisches Seufzen aus.
“Das ist eine ziemlich lange Geschichte…”
“...ich hoffe, du magst keine Happy Endings. Die hier hat keins”, begann Eunsook und hob den Kopf aus den Kissen, um Jisuk schief anzugrinsen.
Jisuk richtete die Kissen in ihrem Rücken und nahm sich ein Gudetama Plushie, um es im Schoß zu halten. Dann grinste sie die beiden aufmunternd an: “Ich liebe lange, komplizierte Geschichten!”
Yunhee und Eunsook sahen sich verwundert an, dann mussten sie lachen.
“Also gut”, begann Yunhee und Eunsook fuhr dramatisch fort: “Es begann alles damit, dass ich geboren wurde…”

summary: when a little baker moves to town, the sheriff finds that he can’t wait to sink his teeth in her.

warnings?: slight age difference between reader and lee (reader is mid-20’s, lee is late-20’s/early 30’s), pet name (sweet cheeks), not proofread (wrote this in an hour, so expect mistakes whoops)
note: while this is the main storyline i envision for modern tatted!lee, feel free to send in any ideas/concepts you’d like to discuss in my asks.
disclaimer: by “tiny”, i am simply referring to the height of the reader, which i am envisioning as being 5’2” or less. i am not commenting on the weight/body type of the reader. just how she compares in height to lee.
Moving to Knockemstiff was, perhaps, not the first choice you would’ve made when you got out of college. But, there was a thing about small towns: the cost of living was relatively low, at least when you compared it to the city. If you were moving to Cincinnati, for instance, you probably couldn’t afford the tires on your car. Not to mention how much more difficult it would be to get a job. In a small town, though? People were practically begging for workers. Plus, everything was so much cheaper. You were able to get a 2-bed, 1-bath apartment all on your own. And you wouldn’t even need a roommate! The best part, though? Your apartment was right above your soon-to-be-opened bakery.
It was almost funny how small towns sometimes would lack things that bigger cities would have. Knockemstiff only had the one grocery store, where they would get any sort of food that they needed. What more could they want with their typical grocery items, the deli, and the bakery that the little Mom and Pop shop had? Everything they needed, all in one place. They didn’t need, or really want, anything else.
Well, to that, you’d say that they hadn’t tried anything you’d made yet.
The bakery was cute. Not quite how you wanted it to look from the exterior, but that was the price you paid for putting it right on Main Street. Every building there was considered historical, and the local Historical Society would serve your head on a platter if you ever dreamed of doing anything to ruin the aesthetic of Main Street. So, you bit your tongue on the matter and worked your damned hardest to make sure that, if you couldn't have the outside of the building to your preference, at least the inside would be exactly as you wanted it.
You worked tirelessly to make sure everything was ready. And finally, finally, it was all coming to fruition.
The local newspaper had come down earlier to take pictures of the grand opening. Something about a bakery coming to town was a big deal. You thought it odd, but figured it was just another one of those small town quirks. And, besides, it was free publicity. Your bakery would be front and center on the front page of the newspaper. Anyone who hadn’t heard of your bakery by now certainly would by the time they read tomorrow’s paper. And, if you were lucky, it might even draw in a few curious folks.
You stayed busy most of the morning. While you had been working on getting the bakery up and running, word had spread throughout Knockemstiff about you, and there were more than a few people who, for better or for worse, wanted to know what the big deal was. And, so it seemed, you only had satisfied customers, if the looks on their faces as they dove into their chosen treats were any indication.
Most of the morning rush had died down when you heard the little bell above the door ring. You don’t look up, busy placing another tray of chocolate chip cookies in the glass case, calling out, “Hi! Welcome to Sweet Sensations! I’ll be with you in just a moment!”
As you straightened back up, you realized that you had a crowd of people coming into your shop. The entire sheriff’s department, so it seemed with their uniforms and tools of their trade.
One man stepped up to the counter, glancing over the treats you had out on display. As you looked up at him, waiting for him to say something, you suddenly became aware of just how small you were, especially compared to him. You barely were taller than the cases you’d ordered, but compared to this man? Shit, he could probably squish you under his boot.
Then your eyes zeroed in on the shiny sheriff badge on his chest, then trailed down his arms to the wisps of a tattoo peaking out onto his hands. When you finally looked back up, unaware that you were licking your lips, the sheriff was smirking down at you. “What can I get for you today, sheriff?”
“Well, what would you recommend, sweet cheeks?”
“Um, everything?” you squeaked. Your eyes dart over the top of the glass cases, trying to figure out what would be best to recommend. “I, uh, think my favorites would be the personal apple pie, the red velvet cupcakes, and the peanut butter cookies.”
He nodded, stroking his chin like he was thinking. Finally, he said, “I’ll take one of those pies, a half dozen of the cupcakes, and a dozen of the cookies.”
You nodded, grabbing some boxes to put each of the orders into. “You got quite the sweet tooth, sheriff.”
“Lucky for me that I got a sweet little thing like you to satisfy all of my cravings.”
You paused as you stacked the boxes into a bag for him to carry. Did he just? No, surely he couldn’t have. He was just talking about food. Right? There was no way he actually said that, was there?
“That’ll be twenty-four dollars and seven cents,” you said.
He reached into his back pocket, retrieving his wallet. It was almost like he was taking his sweet time in pulling out his credit card, like he was doing his damned hardest to make this interaction last as long as possible. It almost made you melt. You couldn’t remember the last time someone was this dedicated to spending time with you.
The card reader was on your side of the register, so he reached over, his fingertips brushing up against yours as he passed you the card. You fought the urge to squeak at the contact, focusing entirely on swiping the card and ripping off the receipt that spat out from the register. But, as you passed the card and receipt to him and your fingertips brushed against his again, the squeak fell out before you could stop it.
His smirk was wide as he slipped the card and receipt into his wallet, before returning it to his back pocket. “Now, what’s a sheriff gotta do to get your number, sweet cheeks?”
You weren’t sure where the confidence came from, the feeling odd as you found yourself saying, “You gotta share a cheesecake with me first.”
“Ah. Well, I get off work around four o’clock. That good for you?”
Wait, he was serious? And he wanted to see you tonight? What kind of cheesy Hallmark movie nonsense had you walked into? But, shit, as you looked into his soft blue eyes, you couldn’t help but wish it stayed as sweet as a Hallmark movie—at least, minus all of the drama that comes with a movie. If it could just stay like this, you’d never complain.
“Just peachy.”
“See you then, sweet cheeks.” As he turned, ready to leave, you called out, stopping him in his tracks. He turned, the smirk on his face prominent, as he asked, “Yeah, sweet cheeks? You need something?”
“Only fair that I know your name before you come over tonight. My name’s—”
“Lee. Lee Bodecker. And don’t worry ‘bout tellin’ me your name. It’s my job to know who everyone in this town is.”
You frowned. “You already know my name?”
“Like I said, sweet cheeks, I got quite the sweet tooth.”
And, with a final wink, he turned and left, the little bell above the door ringing as he went. You stood for a moment, trying to process what the hell just happened. But, that would have to wait. You had a business to run, and a cheesecake to pick out for tonight. So, you straightened yourself up, brushed off the invisible dust from your apron, and called out, “I can help whoever’s next!”
