Hi! First off your blog is such an important resource for me in kimono patterns, thank you for keeping it! Secondly, a question. What patterns are associated with death? I know of spider lilies, and pure black kimono accessories for funeral wear, but otherwise not much else. I suspect that kind of pattern would be more of a novelty item print than an estabilished and used pattern.

Hi and thanks for your kinds words! Off the top of my head, they are several patterns associated with death, mostly linked to Buddhism.

Tbh, mourning attire for women are for me more an affair of colors (black/muted) and discreet not-celebratory patterns (it also depends of ones means). Novelty "death-themed"patterns are more and more present in modern kimono, yet you can also find "traditional" ones - even if they are on the rarer side.

Formal mourning garb, as you note, asks for mofuku (black kimono and obi with a few white accessories). Obi usually have very traditional woven ground patterns - for example ryuusui (running water) which kinda symbolize "the flow of life".

For the Buddhist anniversary of one's death and rememberance services, ladies would (when they can afford it) go from all black to half-mourning dress in muted colors like dull greys or ashen purple. For such occasions, you can find Buddhist patterns like sutra (Heart sutra especially), lotus flowers, gorintô (stylized stupa), etc.

More seasonal items could reference Buddhist Obon (festival of the dead) or Higan (more especially autumn equinox Shûbun), but such patterns for very specific events are on the rarer side, and more a matter of taste and style.

Patterns can include higanbana (spider lilies) for Higan, and for Obon: lanterns, cucumber or eggplant "spirit horse", hozuki (ground cherry), nod to Kyoto’s Daimonji kanji, or memento mori-themed motifs (like skeletons, nozarashi or graveplates).

As a step further into morbid imagery, another pattern which can sometimes be found, especially on men juban or haori lining, are decaying corpses (referencing Buddhist meditation on kusôzu or "nine stages of decay"). This was a subject in Japanese art, you can find an example here (cw: corpse depiction).

Hinting at Buddhist concept of impermanence and search for enlightment, Hell courtesan (jigoku dayû) with uchikake coats depicting hellish torments could also enter the death patterns category. Same goes for Buddhist hell imagery of Hell king Enma, or Hell guardians Gozu and Mezu (I believe I saw them on men juban/haori linings + on netsuke).

Gothic Elegance

Monochrome outfits that focus on texture and light have always caught my attention, but pieces like that don't tend to show up on the secondary market very often. I decided I would just go ahead and work with what I've got, and I'm very glad I did! It was a bear to take photos of, and they don't show the depth and richness of all these blacks and textures combined, but hopefully the close-ups help a bit. I started with my juban with the black ruffle trim, which pretty much determined the colour of my outfit. I have to admit, it made my inner goth very happy. The mofuku kimono is smooth and solid, but it's such a rich silk that it has an almost reflective quality which brings in another layer of tones and textures. I also added a black lace collar underneath everything, which adds to that gothic Victorian vibe and works so well. I really love the look of a lace collar under kimono and I'm glad I've invested in a black one now. I bought a roll of eyelet lace and temporarily affixed it to a mofuku obi for another layer of lacy texture, and I could not love how it turned out more. I want to do it to a bunch of other obi now where it's more visible. Black obiage and obijime finish off the outfit. I'm not thrilled with how poofy the ohashori is here, because there's so much excess fabric from the hiked-up hem of the kimono, but aside from that everything turned out exactly how I'd pictured it in my mind! Kono hana wo mitsumete iru to, hai wo yande iru onna no, usui hifu wo sukashite jōmyaku no aomi ga mirareru yōna, kanashii kimochi ga ajiwawaremasu. Why are most mofuku that are sold second hand made specifically of ro weave? Most other second hand kimono are other than summer weaves

This is because "regular" mofuku can be repurposed into other clothing such as dresses or skirts or the kamon can be re-dyed easily to be reused for someone else. When it comes to ro fabrics it's harder to cover up kamon and/or remake them into other fashion items, so they're much easier to find in their original state ^^

Part 5 of the '(well now I've) scene it all' series is possibly my favouite kind of accessory which I'd wear every dang day! Arm warmers- I had pink and black ones just like in the preview pic which I made out of socks and they were such a go-to, aha. F only, Peggy arm warmers with ages added by @sushigal007 in 4 striped colours, and bloom gloves edited by @khal-ulti in 2 fingerless fishnet variations. They can be worn on their own or combined, but as you can see there's some minor clipping. you can have them binned as accessories, or as BV jewellery- the arm warmers binned as left bracelet, and bloom gloves binned as right bracelet!

I've revamped my much beloved formal kimono set! Thank you @holo-sims for reminding me these exist aha.

What's changed? They're p much the same decorative textures in tsukesage, houmongi, irotomesode, kurotomesode and mofuku styles- but cleaned up and repo'd, in a selection of curious b colours to match you game and with added haori options on my haori mesh!

Available for TF-EF + TM-EM on converted meshes (which you can find repo'd to original textures here and there) plus TF-EF on my haori mesh. All meshes are included. The Tsukesage and houmongi are everyday and formal, tomesode and mofuku formal, and haori versions have outerwear added. Options for standalone and repo'd to AF, everything's in labelled folders. this is p much entirely inspired by this one snap aha. polkadot denim recolours of @keoni-chan's conversion of the cottage living overall dress made top only by @deedee-sims for CF-AF, everyday, plus Julie J's conversion of Whysim's terra overall bottom and @taylors-simblr TF conversion (which has the texture a bit stretched on the lower legs as you might be able to see on the picture). He knew what day it was the moment he opened his eyes, laying in his bed for a while longer than he usually did. Uzui Tengen was a morning person on any normal day, the type that would bounce up and get his day started with a smile on his face and all the affection in the world for his wives ... but today? Was different. Understandably so. With his bed empty as his wives were out dealing with their own matters, Tengen was much slower getting out of his bed than usual ... and rather than dressing in his slayer uniform? He slipped the plain black mofuku kimono, carefully dressing himself as necessary before he grabbed hold of the large sake bottle and cups, tucking them in the bag (along with an extra sake bottle if the mood struck him just right). 

Making his way along with the sky still fresh with dawn, the breeze was gentle, musing his loose hair as he lost himself to his thoughts ... only drawn out of it by the sight before him. 

Iguro. 

Usually his wives joined him, and quite frankly ... he could use somebody there, even if it was the snake man. “Hey, Obanai!” lifting his hand that wasn’t holding the small bag of supplies, Tengen’s grin didn’t fit his manner of dress at all. “Whatcha doing? Got any flashy plans?”

-Por favor, contadnos cómo os conocisteis. Aki: Creo que fue cuando ambos estábamos en grupos diferentes y tocamos en el mismo evento. Por aquel entonces, ni siquiera hablamos (risas). -Crees, ¿eh? (risas) ¿Cuándo mantuvisteis vuestra primera conversación? Mao: Tras haberme separado de mi anterior grupo, Aki-kun se me vino de repente a la cabeza cuando buscaba nuevos compañeros de grupo, así que me puse en contacto con él pensando "probablemente no llegue a nada~". ¡Y entonces mordió el anzuelo! Así me sentí. -Esta pregunta es para Aki-san. ¿Qué fue lo que te cautivó y que te hizo aceptar tan rápido cuando recibiste la llamada? Aki: No me esperaba para nada que Mao-kun se pusiera en contacto conmigo, nunca antes habíamos hablado por teléfono. Pero es innegable que ya me había fijado en él desde que le vi cuando aún estábamos en nuestros anteriores grupos. Así, decidí "¡no puede ser de ninguna otra manera!". -En tu opinión, ¿qué tiene Mao que resulta tan atractivo? Aki: Podría decirse que no es como los demás, me gustó particularmente su voz. Sentí algo en él que era distinto a la otra gente. -¿Y cómo ve Mao-san a Aki-san? Mao: "Tiene mucho estilo, ¡nunca antes he visto a nadie así!" fue lo que sentí. (risas) -Descubrí SID antes de que iniciaseis vuestras actividades, cuando estabais repartiendo fliers antes del inicio de algún concierto. Solíamos estar en grupos que tenían un aire diferente al estilo visual actual de SID; aunque habrá gente que dirá "llevamos siendo visual bastante tiempo, ¿y si lo dejamos?", pensé que no habría tanta gente que diría "¡vamos a hacerlo!". Eso es todo. -Y entonces comenzasteis con vuestras actividades y ahora han pasado unos 5 meses. ¿Cómo ha sido? Mao: Avanzamos a buen ritmo, lo siento cada día. -Hace poco, el MD que lanzasteis se agotó inmediatamente, y me parece que sacasteis otro MD en un evento que encabezasteis en noviembre... La segunda canción, titulada "Ao", es una diferente a la del primer MD. Mao: Sí. Como se agotó en un día la primera vez, aumentamos el número a 2000 copias esta vez, así que la gente que aún no lo haya escuchado, por favor, hacedlo. -Bueno, entonces, para resumirlo con una palabra, ¿qué tipo de grupo es SID? Me da la impresión de que ponéis mucho énfasis en la voz. Mao: Aunque nos autodenominamos visual-kei, no queremos seguir concienzudamente lo que las personas que nos han precedido en el mundillo han hecho. Creo que hay muchas maneras en las que podemos expresarnos justamente porque somos visual-kei. -Mao-san, utilizas la expresión "visual-kei" con atrevimiento, pero ¿por qué? Creo que no se puede decir que algo tiene que ser de una determinada manera para que salga bien, así que quiero expresar algo que no puedes resumir en una única frase como "¡El sonido de SID es algo como ○○○!". -Veo que lleváis mofuku [kimonos negros de luto] como atuendo. Aki: Sí. Probablemente porque se ve a gente que lleva kimono en el escenario, pero nunca mofuku. Yo personalmente lo quería usar. -También hay muchas formas de llevar bien un mofuku. Ambos lo hacéis con vuestro estilo propio. Mao: Tenemos diferentes personalidades, así que supongo que nos salió así de forma natural. -Y después hay un concierto gratuito que realizaréis el 20 de diciembre... Aki: No todas las personas que asistan serán las que siempre vienen a ver a SID. Queremos que sea un concierto en el que podamos involucrar a todo el mundo. Y quiero que nos puedan escuchar adecuadamente. No quiero que sea un concierto que solo sirva para ser divertido. Mao: Como se llama "Concierto gratuito de aniversario de medio año", aunque medio año es poco tiempo, os mostraremos lo que hemos logrado hasta ahora (risas). -Es un cambio brusco de tema, pero ¿hay algo que os haya interesado últimamente? Mao: No tengo hobbies (risas). -(Risas) ¿Y qué hay de los paseos? ¿Ni siquiera sales a pasear...? Mao: Me gusta salir a pasear. Me hace sentir solo. Voy solo a lugares que se supone que tienen un aire solitario (risas). -¿Y qué hay de Aki-san? ¿Eres de los que salen? En cualquier caso, esa es la impresión que das... ■ESPECIAL■ Recuerdos de Año Nuevo y fin de año

Mao: Desde que era pequeño siempre iba a tocar la campana en Año Nuevo. Esto sucedió cuando estaba en Fukuoka, fui con una chica a una cita al parque de atracciones en Año Nuevo. El parque de atracciones tenía fuegos artificiales ese día. Pero cuando la cuenta atrás de los fuegos artificiales llegó a cero... Los lanzaron antes de que llegásemos, así que es un recuerdo del que me arrepiento. Aki: ¿Cuando era pequeño cero que solía ver la competición Kouhaku? Pero es un recuerdo del que me arrepiento porque nunca lograba aguantar despierto hasta tarde y me quedaba dormido a la mitad. Así que no tenía más remedio que ver las repeticiones para enterarme de los resultados. Supongo. Tampoco es que los resultados tuvieran importancia. Aparte de eso, supongo que estaría apurando para terminar mis deberes. Cosas como proyectos de investigación libre... ¡Oh! Una vez hice soba. -¡Eso es genial! Aki: Todo lo que hice fue hervirlo... (risa tímida) No es para tanto... Pero ese soba era rojo y blanco. -¿Eh? ¿Hay soba rojo y blanco? Aki: Sí. Es raro, ¿verdad?

―Please tell us how you met. Aki: I think it's back when we were in different bands and played at the same event. At that time, we didn't talk (laughs). ―You think, huh? (laughs) When did you first have a conversation together? Mao: After I disbanded my previous band, Aki-kun suddenly surfaced in my mind when I was looking for new bandmates, so I contacted him, thinking, "This probably won't work out~". And then he took the bait! That's what it felt like. ―This question is for Aki-san. What charm was it that made you agree so readily when you received the phonecall? We used to be in bands that had a different feel from SID's current visual style; although there are people who'll say, "we've been visual for a long time now, how about quitting?", I thought that aren't many people who'll say "I'll do it!" That's all there was to it. ―And then you started activities and it's been about 5 months now. How has it been?? Mao: We're moving ahead at a great speed, I can feel it everyday. ―Recently, the MD you released sold out immediately, and I understand that you released another MD at the event you spearheaded in November... The coupling song is a different track from the first MD, entitled 'Ao'. Mao: Yes. Because it sold out within a day the first time, we increased the number to 2000 copies this time, so people who've yet to listen to it, please do so. ―Well then, to sum it up with one word, what kind of band is SID? I get the feeling that you emphasise a lot on vocals. Mao: Although we call ourselves visual-kei, we don't want to keep strictly to what people before us in the scene have done. I think there are many ways of expressing ourselves especially because we're visual-kei. ―Mao-san, you use the phrase 'visual-kei' boldly, but why is that so? Mao: I like visual-kei a lot... (smiling). Aki: I love visual-kei too! (smiling). I like putting on makeup. Isn't it like becoming another you? I think you can't say something has to be a certain way for it to work out, so I want to express something that you can't sum up with a single sentence such as "SID's sound is something like ○○○!" ―I see you wear mofuku [black kimono for mourning] as outfits. Aki: Yes. Probably because you see people who wear kimono onstage, but never mofuku. I personally wanted to wear it. ―There are a lot of ways to wear mofuku well too. You both do it in your own characteristic way. Mao: Our personalities are different, so I guess it ended up like this naturally. ―And then there's the free live you're holding on the 20th of December... Aki: Not all the people who are going to show up will be the ones who always go to watch SID. I want it to be a live where we can involve everyone. And I want to let them listen properly to us. I don't want it to be a live that only serves to be fun. Mao: Because it's called "Half-year Anniversary Free Live", although half a year is a short time, we'll show you what we've compiled so far (laughs). ―This is a sudden change in topic, but there anything you've gotten into lately? Mao: I'm hobbyless (laughs). ―(laughs). What about strolls? Don't you even go strolling...? Mao: I like to take strolls. It makes me feel lonely. That amusement park sets off fireworks on that day. But when the fireworks for the countdown went off... They went up before we got there, so it's a regretful memory. Aki: When I was small I think I used to watch the Kouhaku competition? But it's a regretful memory 'cause I couldn't make myself stay up late and would fall asleep halfway through it. So I had no choice but to watch reruns for the results? I guess. Not that the results really mattered. Beside that, I guess I'd be rushing to finish my homework? Stuff like free research projects... Happy Halloween 2022!

Tomorrow his Halloween! The day we celebrate errant bloggers rising from the grave, apparently. I am actually working on an entry discussing my increasing absences, and a slight shift in the purpose and focus of this blog, so keep an eye out for that. Don't worry, it's not bad news! In the meantime though, I actually have a coordination for you! I bought this piece last time I was in California. I realise it's supposed to be a sunset over the landscape, but to me it absolutely looks like a spooky forest fire scene. The spindly black trees and bright orange background just felt very Halloween to me and I decided it would be the perfect piece to get back into the swing of things. I wanted to keep the Halloween vibe relatively subtle, but I did try to amp up the spooky factor with a black and silver spiderweb haneri and brass bat obidome made out of a vintage menuki. The obi is a solid black mofuku nagoya, paired with white and orange accessories. I don't have a catalogue photo of this piece yet, but that's a problem for another day. It is coming, I promise! What would happen if a gei/maiko were to unexpectedly die? Who would be invited to the funeral and what would it be like?

If a geimaiko were to unexpectedly die then it would be a great loss for the community. Since the funeral would be held in the woman's hometown, which is usually not Kyoto, it wouldn't be attended by many other geimaiko as they unfortunately have to work. Those who would attend would be members of the same okiya and the okasan though. It would be like any other Japanese funeral in that the mourners would wear all black kimono called mofuku and, should a maiko attend, the kanoko or tegara of their hairstyle would be white instead of red ^^

Shiho: Just because it does not have a house with 4 walls and a roof to return to, does not mean it lacks a home. Or do you disagree?

Shiho: In other words, this park could be considered its home.

Manager: You’re saying it lives in this park?

Shiho: And thus, the cat that lives in this park is no stray. It is simply a cat.

Manager: I’m guessing you’ve been taking care of it recently?

Shiho: That’s a little excessive. It would be more accurate to say that I’ve been looking after it.

Manager: Uh, sure, I don’t think it’s that different.

Shiho: To disappear on me after all the food I’ve given…it’s like it doesn’t even care.

Manager: They say cats take a mere 3 days to forget 3 years of caretaking.

Shiho: How cold-hearted…and on a day when I went and bought its favourite cat food, of all days…

Manager: (She’s taking this really hard…)

Shiho: Oh, but what if…!

Manager: What if…?

Shiho: What if it got taken to a wildlife shelter?

Manager: I think…you probably don’t need to worry about that.

Shiho: Do you have a basis for that claim?

Manager: Er, not exactly…but you’d have seen the animal control people around here if they took it, no?

Shiho: Oh, but what if…!

Manager: What is it now…?

Shiho: What if it got in an accident?

Manager: I think that’s also unlikely.

Shiho: On what grounds?

Manager: I mean, cats are pretty agile…

Shiho: Agile enough to never get hit by a car?

Manager: Er…

Shiho: Agile enough to never get attacked and hurt by a stray dog?

Manager: I don’t think stray dogs are a common sight these days…

Shiho: Can you definitively say they don’t exist?

Manager: Er, no, sorry, I guess I can’t…

Shiho: My apologies. I know you’re just trying to be reassuring…but I can’t help but worry…

Manager: No, it’s okay…

Shiho: Ahhh…Mofuku…

Shiho: It’s what I call the cat. Since it’s all black.

Manager: You named the cat after funeral clothes? How inauspicious…

Shiho: Whatever do you mean? I find mofuku funeral clothes to be quite stylish. World-class style.

Manager: Okay, I’ll help you look for Mofuku.

Shiho: I’ve already looked everywhere.

Manager: We’ll double-check, just in case! It’s a big park, you might’ve just missed a spot somewhere.

Shiho: You really think so…?

Manager: I can’t prove it’s likely or anything…but it’s still possible!

Shiho: Gamaner…

Manager: Come on, we’ll search for Mofuku together!

Shiho: Right!
