January 5th, Headcanuary prompt: Pet (Dreamling and Corinthiel)

The New Inn always seemed to be a beacon for the local feline population. It was begrudgingly accepted by the regulars, that their after work pint or weekend tipple would always be shared with one of London's many resident moggies.

Until recently, the pubs offical cat had been a large, jet black creature by the name of Murphy. Standoffish and haughty, but a beautiful animal. Often seen trailing after Robbie, the pub landlord. Or occasionally conceding to let visiting children pet his long furr, or tug at his ears and tail with regal exasperation.

Sadly, in the summer just passed Murphy had seemingly vanished. In his place however came the landlords new husband, Morpheus. A striking man, just as dark and unsocial as Murphy, but as similarly kind in his own way. And oh, it couldn't be missed how much Robbie glowed in his presence. How his smile lit his eyes, how he laughed freer and louder and how their beloved inkeep looked for all the world like a man so contented, he desired for nothing. As such, the loss of Murphy in exchange for Morpheus was eventually accepted as a worthy one.

It was in the following September that a new cat graced the doorway of the New Inn. A young little critter, barely passed its kitten years, with an immaculate white coat and vibrant green eyes. Friendly and curious, it would greet each patron in turn, accepting pats and all manner of affectionate nicknames from Snowy to Casper. Untill the daughter of the pubs chef declared him Dandelion, or Danny for short and it had stuck.

Unlike his predecessor, Danny would sit amongst the pub patrons, listening to their chatter with an enraptured expression. Or play with the younger visitors, bounding after them with an identical, youthful glee. But most often he'd be seen chasing the heels of the Morpheus, weaving between his black clad ankles and pawing his thighs for constant attention and affection. They made mismatched pair, Danny's bright, white furr against Morpheus's all black attire. But they never seemed happier then when they were together. Danny curled about Morpheus's shoulders, batting playfully at his wild locks as the other watched on indulgently.

As the Christmas season arrived, so too did what was generally assumed to be Danny's owner. An undeniably handsome blond with a natural charisma, that immediately endeared him to customers and bar staff alike. His strange obbsession with sunglasses in the depths of British winter notwithstanding. It was accepted that this must indeed by Danny's owner, for whenever this rakish fellow graced the inn with his presence, neither cat nor man could be torn asunder. Together they'd haul themselves up in this corner or that. Danny curled blissfully in the blondes lap, or held possessively against his chest. The man, seemingly euphoric with the undeivded attention and decidedly foreboding if anoyone dared come between them. Much to the evident amusement of Robbie and the chagrin Morpheus.

Unlike so many of its counterparts, the New Inn stayed closed over the New Year. But if any of its customers had chanced a peek through its windows at the strike of midnight, they'd have seen the hearth lit and a table close by, original designed for two and a little too small for four, occupied by two couples. To one side Robbie and Morpheus, cheeks ruddy with with wine and leaning into each other with a loving ease. And on the other, that same tall, blond accompanied by an angelic looking young man, pale haired and bright eyed. Clasping at each other with all the adoration of new love. Four glasses raised in a toast to happy endings and new beginnings.

do you know if theres any harmless tailless genes that can be present in american feral cat colonies? theres a big problem with feral cats where i live and recently a kitten (maybe 6-8 months) has appeared near my property but she has no tail at all, not even a little bob. im extremely worried that the manx gene might be present in the feral colony, even though she's the only one ive seen with no tail. she's too young for it to have been an accident or an amputation, i think, and it looks completely natural. she's super skittish so unfortunately i dont have any pictures

To the best of my knowledge there are 2 types of bobtail genes that have been documented.

The “asian bobtail” is caused by a HES7 mutation. This results in a short, kinked but not absent tail and isn’t associated with any health issues. This gene is responsible for Japanese Bobtails and likely the cause for other Eastern bobtail breeds such as the Kurilian and Mekong.

The “natural bobtail” is caused by a T-Box mutation. The expression of this gene is highly variable and not predictable, ranging from a decreased tail length to an entirely absent tail. This gene is responsible for the Manx and has also been documented in other Western bobtail breed such as the American Bobtail and Pixiebob.

The “manx gene” appears to be somewhat present in American feral populations, as evidenced by the presence of “manx syndrome” in affected moggies.

Bunni has a “stumpy” tail and is afflicted with manx syndrome effecting her gait and resulting in urinary incontinence, needing her bladder expressed manually throughout the day.

Cora has a “stumpy” tail and is effected by manx syndrome resulting in a degree of fecal incontinence which is managed reasonably well on a prescription diet.

Will doesn’t have a listed tail-length but is somewhere on the manx spectrum and has both urine and fecal incontinence due to manx syndrome.

Linguine has a “stumpy” or “longy” tail, based on the one image where it’s visible, and due to manx syndrome experiences urinary incontinence when she’s asleep.

Bob had a “rumpy riser” tail and is fully incontinent due to manx syndrome but wears a diaper without a problem.

Rumpie is a “rumpy” with no tail who has a gait effected by manx syndrome and a degree of incontinence.

Cece is a “rumpy” with no tail and has issues with constipation and doesn’t always make it to the litterbox as a result of manx syndrome.

Bunny, Monkey, Billy Cat and Olaf are all tailless “rumpy” cats with degree of incontinence. Bunny is also lame in a hind leg.

Research has indicated that tailless cats experience a significantly increased rate of manx syndrome - although it can effect any tail length where the gene is present, as seen by some of these adoptable cats.

So that does put your feral at a statistical disadvantage but it isn’t a guarantee she’ll have any clinical symptoms of manx syndrome. That’s part of what makes this gene so insidious, we know rumpy cats are most likely to be impacted but beyond that it’s anyones guess which cats will display symptoms and how severe.

I think these random-bred moggies being mislabeled as manx or manx mixes is the one time I’m not bothered by breed misrepresentation, as the issues the experience are the same as the real deal and it raises awareness of manx syndrome.

Previews of Savannah Reed and Brooklyn Hayes for my upcoming LPS: Popular inspired/based webcomic! For a quick snippet, the comic will be set in 2005 with our main characters being juniors (ages 16-17) in high school. The high school, O.C.D. (Orange County Day) will be set in Santa Ana, California, a real city in Orange County.

Savannah 'Savvy/Sav' Reed is a 16-year-old dachshund/beagle-mix born in March of 1989 in Red Lodge, Montana to her overprotective yet caring mother, a nurse, and mostly-absent father, a railway conductor. To quote her description, 'She is your stereotypical ‘homely-to-homegirl’ type chick... Savvy is, overall, a sweet-tempered girl with poor self-esteem who desperately just wants to fit in. Savvy hates lying and liars, which she quickly figures is one of the main ways to survive in her newfound dramatic high school life, even if it means lying to herself'.

Brooklyn 'Brooke/Brookie' Hayes is a 16-year-old Moggy (standard-issue) cat born in October of 1989. She is the most popular girl at O.C.D, and will do anything it takes to retain that status. Her family runs on generational old money, and her mother is one of Cali's best plastic surgeons, with her deceased husband having been one of the best lawyers in the state prior to his passing. Brooke was close to her father and is distant with her mother, and to quote her description, 'Brooke is deep-down a stray and scared kitten, who is afraid of criticism and who will not hesitate to bring out the claws if faced with vulnerability. Brooke hates herself, and knows that she is miserable, as the last piece of her true self still remains under lock-and-key within the darkest depths of her hardened heart. Popularity to Brooke is like a drug, and a drug that she must constantly supply herself with to keep that last, thinning thread of her sanity intact'.

More of the characters will be coming soon, I promise! As a full-time uni student with a job, things can be strained!

Are Vice and Malice certain breeds (or a certain breed since I'm pretty sure they are blood siblings? Might be mistaken in that belief) or just 2 cutie patootie DLH moggys

Mal and Vice are both street mutts, and with cats that means that their only breed is "domestic long hair." Cat breeds aren't like dog breeds; if they're not from a lineage the "breed" doesn't really apply. But for purposes of categorizing cat looks, Vice is a pretty textbook Nebelung. They're known for their mist-grey coats, green eyes, long straight facial structure, and lean athletic builds, which is Vice to the letter.

Malice would be either a Chantilly-Tiffany or a black Ragdoll. Black ragdolls aren't a formally accepted color variant of that breed, but she has the very passive-about-handling personality Ragdolls are known for, though she's got a bit more attitude than standard.

They're not actually related! Malice is about a month older than Vice, and came from a litter that included longhair tuxedo kittens (she's got a few white guard hairs to show for it, which you can see here.) Vice is from a litter of completely identical terrified grey dustballs, to the point that they had to check his microchip to be sure they were giving me the right kitten.

Lucan Brattleby: Selkirk Rex

Its main feature is its curly, wool-like coat, which is why it is sometimes called a cat in sheep's clothing. The breed is quite intelligent and learns tricks and commands quickly, as long as it receives a treat or affection in return. Many say that the Selkirk maintains its posture from kitten to adult, being playful and active for a long time.

Professor Fig: American shorthair

This is considered a docile and affectionate cat breed, which attaches itself to the family and gets along very well with children. Very intelligent and patient, the American Shorthair learns commands very easily. Known for its iron health and long life expectancy, it often lives into its 20s.

Professor Weasley: Japanese bobtail

This is an active, docile, kind and extremely intelligent cat breed, they are able to learn their own name and answer for it. They are sociable kittens and feel better in the company of people. Although they are not lap cats, they want to be around, they will sit next to you and sleep in your bed. Japanese Bobtail cats are house keepers and are not easily intimidated.

Professor Sharp: Somali cat

This breed has a wild appearance, with large ears, bushy tail, reddish and long hair, often resembling a fox. They are cunning and smart cats. Extremely observant, it is known to manipulate its human parents in order to obtain its desires, mainly a full pot of food. Because it is a fussy cat, it can be difficult to train and requires effort and dedication. They are not lap cats, generally don't like to be held and will wiggle until you let go.

A moggie is a non-pedigree cat of mixed or unknown ancestry. They can be the result of mixtures of different breeds, so they have some similarities with some types of kittens or they can have unique personality and characteristics. They're friendly, low maintenance and generally pretty healthy. This makes them ideal pets for everyone.

My favorite cat breeds are: British Shorthairs, Norwegian Forest Cats, and Turkish Vans. I actually made a character that was a Norwegian Forest Cat. He is named Rylie, the companion of a 7 inch tall man, Kyle. But truthfully, I think the cuteness of my own moggy cats blows them out of the water. Shiloh is the kitten in my avatar.
