favorite dish at lahpet? best show you’ve seen? rec a fic from another fandom? stories from your adventures lately?
You gorgeous darling you! Asking the IMPORTANT life questions.
Laphet is one of my favourite restaurants in East London serving Burmese food, and it's fucking amazing. Everything on that menu is to die for (I promise this isn't a sponsored segment). My absolute favourite dish is the Mohinga (Catfish & Lemongrass Chowder), the texture of the flesh is silken and smooth like tofu, the spices have marinated into the flesh and is juicy and sweet and flagrant and I feel like my mouth and tastebuds are having a sensual orgy in there everytime I order it.
Best show I've seen? OOOF that's a hard one, I watch on average two shows a week, but one of the absolute best I've seen this year is almeida theatre's production of Streetcar named desire starring Patsy Ferran and Paul Mescal, it was breathtakingly good.
Oh fic rec, god! I'm so poorly organised, one fic that has really stayed with me from a completely different fandom is Something Like This by Emmagrant01 from the Check, Please! fandom. Check, Please! is an online webcomic about Eric Bittle a vlogger and former figure skater turned hockey player who falls in love with his teammate, the captain of the team -- and this is like a fleshed out AU midway of the canon story. I still remember reading this into 5am in the morning and turned out WRECKED for work.
I don't know why -- but all I can think of in my feverish state is how despite having lactose intolerance I keep eating melted cheese, icecream and milk puddings while travelling and having to pay for the price when I risk shitting myself at sacred tourist attractions like how I recently went to Barcelona and sat in the pews of sagrada familia and realised. OH NO! I'm not doing so well... (luckily there are loos there).
ASK ME ANYTHING

Myanmar Luxury Vacations
The midday sun beat down on Yangon, its golden rays reflecting off the majestic Shwedagon Pagoda, a shimmering beacon in the distance. The air hung heavy with the scent of frangipani and the cacophony of street vendors hawking their wares. This was Myanmar, a land seemingly untouched by time, where ancient temples whispered forgotten stories and emerald landscapes beckoned the adventurous soul. But beneath this veneer of serenity lay a burgeoning haven for the discerning luxury traveler, a place where indulgence met exploration, and bespoke experiences unveiled the country's hidden treasures.
For those seeking an escape from the well-trodden tourist path, Myanmar offered a kaleidoscope of experiences unlike any other. Here, luxury transcended opulent hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants. It was about immersing oneself in a bygone era, a slow and deliberate unraveling of a culture steeped in rich traditions. It was about traversing the dusty plains of Bagan on a vintage motorbike, the wind whipping through your hair as you dodged stupas bathed in the golden hues of sunrise. It was about chartering a private boat across the ethereal Inle Lake, the rhythmic lapping of water against the hull a constant counterpoint to the symphony of birdcalls echoing across the mist-shrouded mountains.
Accommodation in this nascent luxury scene wasn't just about creature comforts. It was about embracing a sense of place. Imagine waking up in a meticulously restored colonial mansion in Yangon, its teak floors polished to a high sheen and antique furniture whispering tales of a bygone era. Or picture yourself nestled in a luxurious tented camp on the fringes of Indein, a necropolis dotted with crumbling stupas, where the silence is broken only by the hoots of owls and the rustling of unseen creatures. In these havens, luxury wasn't ostentatious; it was a subtle blend of history, comfort, and unparalleled access.
One couldn't embark on a luxury Myanmar adventure without delving into its culinary heritage. Forget pretentious tasting menus and molecular gastronomy. Here, the focus was on fresh, seasonal ingredients, meticulously prepared according to time-tested recipes passed down through generations. Imagine savoring a steaming bowl of Mohinga, a rich fish noodle soup, on a bustling Yangon street corner, the vibrant energy of the city swirling around you. Or picture yourself indulging in a private cooking class in a Shan village, learning the secrets of fragrant tea leaf salad and fiery curries from a local family, the laughter and clinking of utensils creating a symphony of genuine hospitality.
But Myanmar wasn't just about indulgence. It was about venturing beyond the beaten track, about unearthing the soul of the country. Imagine yourself on a private helicopter tour soaring over the plains of Bagan, the countless temples rising from the earth like a silent army, each one a testament to a forgotten era. Or picture yourself trekking through the verdant hills of Chin State, encountering remote villages where tattooed faces and vibrant costumes paint a picture of a culture fiercely clinging to its traditions. These experiences, meticulously curated for the discerning traveler, were more than just photo ops; they were portals to a world untouched by modernity.
Beyond the curated experiences, a sense of ethical travel was paramount. Myanmar was a nation still emerging from a period of isolation, and responsible tourism was key to ensuring the sustainability of its nascent luxury scene. Working with local guides and travel companies that prioritized community engagement and environmental consciousness ensured that your luxury experience contributed positively to the country's well-being. It meant supporting local artisans by purchasing their intricate lacquerware and silk tapestries, or contributing to the education of underprivileged children in remote villages. In this way, luxury transcended personal gratification and became a catalyst for positive change.
However, a veil of honesty needed to be drawn. Myanmar was a country in flux, its path towards democracy a work in progress. While the tourist infrastructure was rapidly improving, there were still regions with limited access to amenities. It was important to manage expectations; luxury here wasn't about five-star uniformity, but about embracing the unexpected, the deviations from the meticulously planned itinerary that unveiled the raw beauty and captivating spirit of the country.
Ultimately, a luxury vacation in Myanmar wasn't for the faint of heart. It was for the intrepid traveler, the one who craved a deeper connection, a journey that pushed boundaries and challenged perceptions. It was about leaving behind the trappings of everyday life and venturing into a land where time seemed to slow down, where ancient traditions mingled with modern sensibilities, and where the whispers of forgotten empires echoed across breathtaking landscapes. It was about the thrill of discovery, the satisfaction of venturing beyond the comfort zone, and the indelible mark Myanmar left on the soul - a testament to the enduring power of a land untamed.
This, then, was the essence of luxury travel in Myanmar: a tapestry woven with threads of history, adventure, and cultural immersion. It was a journey not just through
a country, but through the soul of a nation.
Just like Hemingway himself, who found inspiration in the raw beauty and unvarnished truths of the world, a Myanmar luxury vacation wasn't about airbrushed perfection. It was about embracing the imperfections, the unexpected twists that added a touch of Hemingwayesque grit to the experience. Imagine getting caught in a sudden monsoon downpour while exploring a hidden temple complex, the scent of damp earth mingling with the heady aroma of incense. Or picture yourself navigating a bustling night market in Mandalay, dodging motorcycles and haggling with vendors, the thrill of the unknown coursing through your veins. These moments, unscripted and unpredictable, were the very essence of the adventure.
The Hemingway spirit wasn't just about physical challenges; it was about a deep reverence for the natural world. Myanmar boasted a breathtaking tapestry of landscapes, each one demanding a sense of respect and awe. Imagine embarking on a private cruise down the remote Chindwin River, its jade-green waters reflecting the emerald embrace of the jungle. Or picture yourself venturing into the pristine wilderness of the Kachin Hills, where towering peaks pierce the clouds and diverse ecosystems teem with life. Here, luxury wasn't about conquering nature, but about coexisting with it, appreciating its raw power and untamed beauty.
Hemingway, a man's man through and through, would have undoubtedly appreciated the deep sense of community that permeated Burmese society. Here, hospitality wasn't a performance, but a way of life. Imagine being invited into a local tea shop for a steaming cup of Lahpet Thoke, a fermented tea salad, the owner sharing stories of his life with a genuine warmth that transcended language barriers. Or picture yourself participating in a traditional alms-giving ceremony at sunrise, witnessing the saffron-robed monks receive their daily offerings with quiet serenity. These encounters were a testament to the enduring spirit of the Burmese people, their resilience, and their unwavering sense of community.
Of course, no Hemingwayesque adventure would be complete without a touch of danger, a brush with the unexpected. Myanmar, despite its burgeoning luxury scene, remained a land of hidden corners and unexplored territories. Imagine venturing off the beaten path into a remote village accessible only by foot, the locals greeting you with a mix of curiosity and amusement. Or picture yourself navigating the labyrinthine back alleys of Yangon, stumbling upon hidden pagodas adorned with flickering candles and the murmur of fervent prayers. These moments, tinged with a hint of risk and a healthy dose of discovery, were the very essence of the thrill.
Just like Hemingway, who found solace in the written word, a Myanmar luxury vacation offered a chance to disconnect from the constant digital buzz and reconnect with the simple joys of life. Imagine spending an afternoon sketching the intricate details of a Bagan temple, the only sound the rhythmic chirping of unseen birds. Or picture yourself curled up with a well-worn book by the flickering light of an oil lamp in a remote mountain lodge, the silence broken only by the crackling fire. These moments of quiet contemplation, a stark contrast to the frenetic pace of modern life, were a chance to rediscover the power of introspection and appreciate the simple beauty of the present.
In conclusion, a Myanmar luxury vacation, much like a Hemingway novel, was an exercise in minimalism. It wasn't about excessive opulence or contrived experiences. It was about stripping things down to their core essence, about appreciating the beauty in the raw, unvarnished reality of a nation on the cusp of change. It was a journey that left you breathless, a little bit dusty, and profoundly moved. It was a testament to the enduring power of a land untamed, a place where the soul of a nation whispered tales of resilience, beauty, and the unyielding human spirit.
