Is show Moraine stilled stilled or did Ishamael like tie off a shield on her or something? Cause the way they're talking about it it seems like she's supposed to be stilled, but if she were Lan's bond would have been severed and passed to Alana, no? Pretty confused about that
So they seem to be very intentionally not giving whatever happened to her an exact name. When Rafe and others were asked behind the scenes, they very specifically didn't say exactly what happened. Within the show itself, they haven't actually used the word stilled to describe what happened either. The most they said is that she was cut off.
They way I'm currently interpreting that is that Moiraine and everyone else believe she's stilled, but she isn't actually and Ishamael just tied off a shield on her. A few reasons for that, Lan's bond being a major indication that she isn't stilled as he woulda felt something at the very least if that bond was gone-gone. For another thing, it seems like she still can't lie. That isn't completely confirmed I guess, but they seem to imply that she still can't lie a lot, which wouldn't be the case if she were stilled.
But a few other reasons I have is that I feel like they'd have no reason not to say the word stilled in the show if she was actually stilled. I feel like they're specifically not saying that word now because some viewers would take characters saying that as confirmation from the show that she were stilled, even if its just a character saying what they actually believe. I feel like its an intentional choice to not make things too definite.
They also very clearly reminded us of shielding with the moment with Nynaeve and Liandrin when Nynaeve gets shielded. Liandrin pointed out things like you can feel the source and see weaves, which are things we see Moiraine experiencing. I think you can still feel the source while stilled (don't remember 100%) but the Liandrin moment seemed very clearly like trying to show us this one thing you can do with the one power and the implications of it.
But also in terms of the actual moment it happened in season 1, it looks like Ishamael is tying off something and its sorta being set into Moiraine. It doesn't look like when Logain was gentled, and I can't imagine the process of stilling and gentling is so different that it would look dramatically different. And you also have to remember that Moiraine cannot see weaves from a male channler. She wouldn't have seen exactly what Ishamael did to her, she would have just felt it. So she is largely just working with assumptions on what happened based on what happened to her after the fact. Maybe she suspects it wasn't a stilling, but she might not have any way to be completely sure, since stilled women don't usually stick around to be questioned.
Also this might be completely bullshit because I genuinely don't remember for sure, but I do feel like there was something about tying of a shield on someone that wasn't common knowledge with the Aes Sedai at the beginning of the series? I don't always remember what was common knowledge and what was learned as the series went on and more lost info on the one power was discovered, but I really felt like there was *something* that present day Aes Sedai didn't know could be done that would mean they wouldn't know that a shield could be tied off on someone. Again, that could be completely wrong though, I don't remember for sure

Finally decided to indulge in the Siuan/Moiraine meta I've been wanting to write for ages now, musing on the differences in psychology ensuing from their significantly different arcs within the book and show and why Siuan's actions at season 2's apex are entirely in psychological sync with her show portrayal, even if they swerve wildly from the books.
Let's start with some Siuan back-story context. In the books, Tear was undeniably an unfriendly city for those with the One Power. But that translated, in practical terms, to Aes Sedai keeping their stays there brief, and girls who could touch The Source being quickly bustled off to the Tower. There were no Aes Sedai advisers, as in other kingdoms etc., but neither was there the virulent hostility of the show.
Siuan left Tear quickly in the books—the first day she was discovered to have the Power, but only because a sister was traveling through and didn't wish to delay returning to The Tower for such pesky things as sentimental goodbyes. Was that harsh? Absolutely. But the world of the books is exceedingly harsh in some respects, giving girls little to no choice about becoming Sisters, should they be discovered harboring abilities. (Much of Nynaeve's back-story involved hiding her powers precisely because she didn't fancy being ripped from The Two Rivers.)
Siuan faces a much different harshness in the show. The show doesn't do a great job explaining this, but The Dragon's Fang, which is etched onto Siuan's door before her house is unceremoniously torched, is a sign of immense contempt for Dark Friends. Within show Tear, a wary mistrust of Aes Sedai has curdled into something much more dangerous. All use of The Power is suspect, because if men's half was tainted, there's nothing to say women won't go suddenly mad, too.
It's worth remembering as well here that book Siuan was roughly fifteen when she went to The Tower. Now, I'm totally blind, and audio description doesn't give me an age for tiny show-Siuan, but if she's anywhere near puberty, I'll eat my metaphorical hat. And instead of being shepherded to The Tower, she had to flee for her life.
In her family's only means of support, I might ad. Book Siuan was by no means well-to-do, but she was firmly in the middling ranks of the working poor. Show Siuan's family are on the fucking destitution brink y'all. And she took her father's livelihood. Dying destitute ain’t fuckin pretty.
Siuan is not a stupid kid, and she clearly adores the shit out of her papa. The first thing that little girl did the millisecond she got any privileges? Wrote to her papa.
And more than likely, Berden never wrote back. It wouldn't take her long to figure out what'd happened. Moiraine is at great pains to tell Alana Jenny was not "her" support dog, and we laugh it off as oh, look at Moiraine being all adorably prim. Which in one sense, it totally is. But I'd almost guarantee you there's a deeper layer there: it wasn't "hers"; it was "theirs" because once Siuan found out her beloved papa was dead, they both needed something to cuddle.
This may seem like somewhat of a digression, but I'm maundering on because in the books yes, Dark Friends are evil. But they're evil because they caused a terrible cataclysm many thousands of years ago that killed lots of people, and they wanna do it again. There's no personal skin in the game for our beloved ladies, except they get thrust into the job through a convergence of some very complicated circumstances—I'd recommend any show-only watchers read "New Spring" because while I love almost all the changes the show has made ferociously, the way Siuan and Moiraine undertake the search is vastly more plausible as presented by Jordan there.
For Siuan in the show, by contrast, Dark Friend has _very personal ramifications. Dark Friends caused the corrosive mistrust that got her papa _killed! And Moiraine, better than _anyone, knows how that broke her.
And she _knows full well she could be deposed simply for having a relationship with Moiraine. The sensible thing to keep all the awful people from committing terrible crimes that will reverberate down the centuries to impact a little girl just as she was impacted would be to keep both their noses clean. And yet, she loves Moiraine so much that she'll take that risk to maintain not only an alliance about Rand, but a romantic relationship which could, realistically, be discovered much more easily.
And now, Moiraine, the woman who parroted back her beloved father's words of farewell about how Siuan was as clever as a pike and strong as the tides seemingly willfully lied; seemingly became a _Dark _Friend. Even her admonition that Lanfear is "too strong" must bring up so many awful questions: just how long have they been working together for her to know that? Because from Siuan's perspective, what it looks like is Lanfear coming in, guns blazing, to save her accomplice, Moiraine.
When Siuan says that there are rules and they have to abide by them, it's reflecting profoundly deep fears—not only about what Rand could do, but the kind of hatred toward those with The Power it could foster. For twenty years, she's put those fears aside. And now it appears that her going against Tower Law has lost her Moiraine to the Forsaken, and made terrible outcomes nigh on inevitable. And people are really confused about why she looks beaten?
Hell, from her perspective, forget Lanfear's entrance. The very fact Moiraine seemingly lied to her and is now talking about love must seem such a cruel mockery: laughing at Siuan's weakness; just as, perhaps, she was laughing at her with that parting comment in The Tower: an Amyrlin Seat still so swayed by what her papa told her so many years ago. (Yeah, we know it was as close as she could come to an I love you, but how the hell is Siuan supposed to know that, given everything?) This was not willful emotional abuse on someone she knew to be acting in good faith, but a reaction to the person she loved enough to risk the fucking Amyrlin Seat for becoming a monster!
Do I wish they'd picked _any other direction for their relationship? Yes, yes I damn well do. There was plenty to play with for angst factor by having the coup go down as it does in the books: Moiraine not being there to save her when all Siuan wanted was more time together, for one thing. Moiraine needlessly obfuscating in front of Siuan and  the other Sisters in S1, when Leandrin already knew! about the Two Rivers folk. Thinking she was being canny, when all she did was get herself pointlessly exiled so she couldn't protect Siuan? Quite enough of an angst sandwich, thanks ever so, without this new development. But! if they were going to include this, Siuan reacted precisely as I would expect her to, given the context I've outlined above, not in some madly ooc fashion worthy of the tags descending into emotional abuse discourse.

Characters who had the best scenes to help them flesh them out despite the changes (season 1):
Rand: (dishonorable mention: episode 2)
Nynaeve: (dishonorable mention: episode 4 and she sleeping with Lan)
Liandrin (she is so OVER the top just like the original, I love it!) (Season 2 ruined it)
Alana
Min
Characters who's fleshing out scenes were improved:
Logain
Characters who are in the middle:
Mat, Egwene, Lan, Loial, Tam (I call this level "I don't have enough information to tell who this person is yet" or "So many changes I don't know if they are the same character anymore" )
A lower level:
Moiraine: ( she was dumbed down, praying that season 2 reveals she has been fooling everyone around her (season 2: na mi cielo) (still the dialogue needs to get better with this "twisting the truth" thing instead of having her refusing to speak like a pouting five year old, it just makes her look stupid!! Especially if she is talking to country bumpkin like Rand! Arhghhhh!!!! ),
Perrin :(
Siuan: (wth was that authoritarian Creonte speech she gives to Moiraine??? That's something that seems more proper from Elaida... Or Agent Smith... Same her with Logain. Siuan has always been a harsh woman, but never cruel, yet is hard to difference her from the Reds in that scene. (Season 2: Oh boy she got even worse!)
The "Dark One" : (was that an Alien in the first episodes????)
Characters I downright don't recognize:
Lord Agelmar, Lady Amalisa, Eamon Valda, the Cauthon's, Padan Fain, Aram
Tumblr media
This is for season 1 only, if I had to do it now... Let's see 🤔
I think I'll have Liandrin stepping down to "barely recognize", Min to "barely recognize" (because of the darkfriend shit) Nynaeve to "acceptable" (lol) , Lan to "who is this?" ... And that's it 🤷 Mat saw some improvement thanks to the actor but again the scripts are the problem, they don't let the boys do anything! 😒 Same with Rand, is thanks to Josha he maintains his position.

I watched TWOT 2.01 and 2.02:
So spoilers below
Moiraine dumping Lan brutally and sending him with Alana back to Tar Valon was brutal and almost made me cry
When Moiraine said Lan failed her as if the man wasn't about to lay down his life trying to protect her 😭 ITS NOT HIS FUCKING FAULT BITCH NO ONE TOLD YOU TO GO OFF ON YOUR OWN
Watching Lan almost die stressed me OUT
Moiraine giving Lan the cold shoulder as if it's was HIS fault she got cut off from the One Power made me so fucking MAD especially because he's trying his best 😭
But Moiraine is serving CUNT this season and I am OBSESSED
Hope Lan gets to go to Tar Valon and reunite with wifey Nynaeve
Nynaeve deserves the world and I will cut Liandrin for putting her hands on my WIFEEE
Was that man Liandrin's son? I thought maybe past lover up until she said "my boy" which if that is her son then I understand her fear when she saw Nynaeve there - but touch my wife again and and I will end you
Jury's still out on Donal's portrayal of Mat but I have a feeling I'll fall in love with this portrayal just like I did the last one
Why do I lowkey ship Mat and Min 👀
WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON WITH PERRIN AND LOIAL WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ATTACKED THAT VILLAGE?!?!?!
I hope we get to see Perrin absolutely let go of his rage and destroy shit LET MY BOY RELEASE HIS WRATH PLEASE
Also what is with Perrin's visions? It has to do with his thing with wolves right? He's gonna become like the wise old tracker - but better
I hope we get to see Perrin rip Padan Fain apart
Rand sleeping with Selene (Lizzy Stark, my beloved) is so valid - but when she said there was a man she loved all I could think about was John from Peaky Blinders 🥲
LOGAIN IS BACK
False dragon with the real dragon 👀 what will happen?!?!?!?!
I don't hate Rand as much as I did in s1 so far but that could change
Currently my least favorite has shifted to Egwene
Egwene getting called out on her jealousy by the princess was great
I have mixed feelings about this "daughter-heir" princess bitch - I don't trust her
Egwene "walking in" on Alana and her wards was so fucking funny
Egwene and Alana's talk where Alana was talking about focusing in your own pleasure - ICONIC
I said it both times I watched s1 but I gotta say it again Fares Fares as Ishamael has my CONSENT
WHERE IS SIUAN?!?!?!?
Perrin, Lan, and Nynaeve are still my faves
Mat was a fav but that was because of Barney's portrayal but I have full faith in Donal that he'll be a great Mat
I'm excited to continueeeeeee

AJAH is the name given to one of the seven different groups of Aes Sedai: the BLUE, GREEN, RED,YELLOW, GRAY , BROWN and WHITE. Each Ajah has its own specific purpose and rules, and is governed by its own internal leader(s). Upon joining her Ajah, each new Aes Sedai is given a vine-embroidered shawl fringed in the color of her Ajah of choice.

More random siuanrain musings, mild book spoilers
I feel like Siuan unfairly blamed Moiraine for the “gentling Logain” trial going wrong. I think Siuan should have punished all three of them (Liandrin, Alana, and Moiraine) to be fair, especially since they all stuck up for each other. By only punishing Liandrin this got Liandrin’s hackles up, and it allowed her to present her case to the sitters that Siuan played favorites, was too loyal to blue, and to partial to Moiraine, in particular.
I can understand her reasoning. I’m sure Siuan was aware of all the illegal gentlings the reds had been doing, but she didn’t have any proof, but she did have proof for this one. But honestly, since all three women were the highest ranks for their ajahs involved in the incident she shouldn’t have allowed her feelings to get in the way of appearing impartial.
I’m certain there was a ton of stuff going on under the surface of that scene that I’ve missed. Like why did Moiraine look at Alana with her confused puppy face when Alana backed Liandrin up? I guess she was surprised because as Maigan says later it’s pretty crazy pants for the different colors to agree with each other. And then after Alana gives Moiraine a nod to encourage her to do the same, Moiraine does so, and I’m really not sure why. Would the situation have been worse if she wouldn’t have agreed? Maybe Moiraine was trying to make things easier on Siuan.
But then Siuan goes on to provoke Liandrin. And then Liandrin has an excuse to go after Moiraine. I can’t see how any of that was Mo’s fault.
After this when Siuan is showing she can be just as dramatic and theatrical as her lover she purposely asks Moiraine questions she can’t answer. I’ve read on theory on reddit that Siuan was actually doing this as a signal to the black ajah. She wanted them to know that Moiraine had taken an oath to never tell anyone what she was doing, which meant she couldn’t be tortured or compelled into answering. So Siaun was doing her best to protect Moiraine. Which was why Siuan specifically pressed, “cannot, or will not?”
And Moiraine said she could not.
There’s also the possibility that they had planned out Q and A responses for if something like this happened. Siuan was giving out all the right prompts, and Moiraine was choosing to ignore them because she wanted Siuan to publicly be very tough on her, so that she could keep up the whole “we hate each other” ploy, and also to try strengthening Siuans position in the game of amyrlins and ajahs.

Lan and Moiraine
The Bond is not the same for everyone. Equal! It is a relationship between two people who stand on the same level and neither of them tries to step on the other or have a battle for dominance. This is not a master / servant relationship, Lan is not there to serve her sexually, he is not there to hand her a snack or because he is grateful that she saved him from some misery. These are not Alana and her warders / boy toys, this is not Kerene with Stepin, who has to earn her somehow, to rise to her level. Lan and Moraine are something else. He makes his own decisions when she is unable, fights with her when he thinks she is wrong, and even allows himself to command her: „Be back before dawn.” „ Is that an order?” She asks jokingly. To which he responds in a very serious tone: „Does it sound like a suggestion?” I wonder how many of the other warders can afford this type of conversation with their Aes Sedai? But neither Moraine nor Lan are random people. Their background makes perfect sense why their relationships are different than the rest.
I don't know if the comparisons and oppositions are purposeful, but it's so obvious. Lan won't give her a fig in front of everyone, because that's not their relationship, he's not there for that. He stands next to her and asks, "Do you want me to be with you right now?" He senses her turmoil, and offers her a support, which she refuses. That is not part of his duty - her decision and her personal emotional battles are not part of the deal, even though he can sense them.  He gives her water, takes care of her wounds and carries her, tells to her to rest when he sees her exhausted, because his priority is to keep her alive. He does not comment in a joking tone on Moraine, as Alana's guards allow themselves to do. That is not his territory to comment on, their relationships are not for the others, her secrets are for no one else. This is respect. Kerene and Stepin gossip about Moraine and Lan, wondering if they're talking at all. Alana signals to her guards to follow her and they get up and follow her like obedient puppies ready to please her. Against this background, Moraine is not there at all, Lan decides by himself when he should leave, no one has called him, no one is looking for him when he is not needed. He has the freedom to roam around and communicate with whomever he likes. That is her respecting his personality and borders.
He goes to her later, feels she is upset, and thinks it's his fault. „WE lost them.” Says Moraine.
„I lost them.” Lan replies.
„Your losses are mine. And mine - yours.”
You are not allowed to feel guilty, you are not allowed to take something on your back because you are not alone in this.
A team, one organism, with a common goal. A goal that is much more important than small details and insignificant emotions.
Nobody blames anyone.
No time for bullshit.

What have I done Part II
Moraine couldn’t sleep. Although her wound was healed, she was still struggling with exhaustion, and it would take days for her to recover from the treatment. And her mind refused to find the peace she needed right now.
The meeting with her „sisters'' left her raw, almost as the wound she carried for days. The wound that nearly took her life. It wasn’t that much of a big deal or something to dwell over unnecessary. It’s not like it happened for the first time. She had him. And the almost arrogant certainty in his abilities to keep her safe, to keep her alive long enough to find help. Not that there wasn’t a chance for something to go wrong - for her to end up dead and for her warder to end up with a broken bond and soul. Guilt hit her anew, this dreadful feeling, heavy in her stomach, that squeezed her insides. She took a breath, and decisively pushed these thoughts away.
But the conversations from today were on repeat in her mind. Liandrine, Alanna, Kerene - all women she knew for years looked at her with suspicion. She was a stranger to them, as much as they were for her. Liandrine never missed the opportunity to bite with venomous sarcasm, leaving no room for interpretation. She was less than happy when she saw Moiraine, never cared for her being wounded, just bragging about her trophy from a successful hunt. For a moment there Moiraine was worried, but after seeing the man in front of her, she knew The Red ajah  was wrong yet again.
Whoever Logain was, he wasn’t The Dragon Reborn, but just a man, cursed with the ability to touch a mighty force of nature, only to face more suffering than he could ever have imagined. She felt bad for this man. It wasn't his fault. It wasn’t anyone's fault. Just a random will of the Wheal, she would never understand. Nature didn’t care that saidin was tainted. Male channelers were born anyway, just as female ones. But they were dangerous. For themselves and to others. But doing what Moiraine and Lan saw Liandrine did weeks before that, was against the rules, against any morals or common sense. No wonder the Aes Sedai were hated in some places.
In some way, the meeting with Kerene and Alana wasn’t so much better. The woman never held the same hostility as Liandrine towards Moiraine, she was a friend as much as she could be for someone who was never there. But she was wondering the same things as everyone else. As a Green sitter she has made Alanna extract information out of Moiraine, and Alanna, being blatantly honest as usual, admitted it through laughter. Compared to the two women, Moiraine felt even more silent and closed. Which she knew would only throw more fuel into the gossip fire. And although they both weren’t enemies, somehow she felt uneasy. At least with Liandrine she knew where she stood. Both women were nice to her, but they had their agenda and every contact with them meant another opportunity for something to go wrong, for a mistake to happen, for something to slip.
So Moiraine was quiet.
Feeling Lan tonight though, led her mind to another place. While he was sitting outside, for a while she sensed something in him. Something different, warm and pleasant, something usually hard to register, but still present, made Moiraine raise her head with curiosity. And focus. It was definitely him.
Affection. She recognized the feeling, it had specific hints, and usually most of the time it was aimed at her. This one was different.  She heard voices from outside, people walking around, preparing to go to bed. Then suddenly the feeling switched to something colder, darker.
She almost felt the urge to call him through The Bond, but suppressed it, it was stupid. It was a trick of the mind when she was calm. All she has to do was direct her thoughts toward some place in her, where she kept the dark pool of the most worrisome memories and fears. Different from the usual call of distress and panic, which hit way faster and harder, this sent a clear message to his brain. It was enough to stir her in order for him to sense the change. It usually meant „I need you”, but it was rare for her to use it. While definitely practical, sometimes it held another meaning for her. It resembled a whim of a spoiled noble, ringing the bell for their servants. It made her scowl, although she never voiced the thought, or a while there she was careful when she needed to use it. Her warder was there to protect her, not to serve her whims, and to come every time she snapped fingers for every little thing. She sometimes wondered if the rest of her sisters thought this way.
The alcohol made him more relaxed, his mind wandering a bit more, his emotions more transparent. It revealed what was lurking under the surface. In moments like this, the Aes Sedai had a chance to observe him more clearly, to see the real man underneath, who usually was the one observing her with a face that didn’t betray his thoughts. And something that was usually reserved for her, now has appeared and started to grow toward someone else.
Light knew that the mission was hard enough, especially now, with the kids scattered somewhere, but that little complication would make things even more… interesting. People thought they get used to loneliness, as with pretty much everything else, you accept it and move on. Moiraine knew that time made it heavier. And it took more and more strength to carry it around. Lan needed someone who could lift that weight from him, even though the stubborn, brooding man would never see it like that. Duty above all and the acceptance that he will walk alone to the end.
But the Aes Sedai has caught the scent of a trace and she wasn’t about to let it go so easily. Her intuition was trying to tell her something, and that was enough. She didn’t like the abrupt change in his mood, and the sudden shut down.  The meaning was clear. The man refused to give himself the luxury to get attached to anyone else.
Maybe it was the exhaustion, but it made Moiraine angry for a brief moment, and then the guilt and sadness took over. That’s when he came back.
A bird screeched outside, the sounds of the night now took over the silent camp. The fire was almost dead and it was getting colder. She bit her lip until it hurt and clenched her fists. How many hours had passed? Was it too long until the morning?
„Stop!” – Low growl came to her from behind and her eyes flew open. She should have known he was awake. „You need to rest. So sleep.”
„Sorry.” – she sighed, but then a grin formed on her lips. His annoyance was always funny. Especially when both were tired. She spread her palm and let it lay on the mattress. Several threads appeared before her, aiming at the almost dying fire that bloomed with renewed force. Her fingers trembled for a second, then moved as if she was counting something. Several barely visible threads appeared again in front of her eyes, several small flames were lit in the air above her and started to move toward him. They stopped just before his face and moved in the air playfully as if laughing at him. One of them got closer and almost licked his nose. He waved a hand and the flames disappeared.
He snorted.  ”You missed!” ”Do you think so?” She didn’t need to turn toward him to see the small smile. The tickling bubbles of laughter inside her were enough. It was a reminder of times long gone, when their souls weren’t that scarred yet and laughter came easier. When she spoke again, her voice was soft: ”Good night, Lan.”  She closed her eyes and concentrated, this time over something else.  Soon her breathing deepened.
