Meet Cutes: 34. working their first shift together, their schedules never matching up before

You had already been aware of one of your coworkers that would be missing their shift today. You were a bit bummed about that since they were more of a friend than just a coworker, and they tended to make closing shifts so much more fun. Who else were you going to talk about your work crush with? You looked around hoping to catch a glimpse of Jotaro; you usually caught him for a moment before the shift change but you didn't notice him just yet. Had he not shown up for his shift yet today either? That seemed to bring your mood down a bit more - no friend and no work crush either? What a day. 

Regardless you were going to have to make the most of your shift - you still didn’t see who was working with you just yet, but you relieved the previous shift now trying to hype yourself up for the evening. It’s fine - just focus on work and you’ll be able to get through the shift no matter who you’re working with today.

“...Hey.” a familiar voice said to you. 

You knew this voice well actually - it was your work crush, Jotaro Kujo. Had Jotaro gone out of his way to say something to you before leaving? Wait, no… He still had his apron on. Was he working with you? This had never happened before, and just realizing this now made you feel a little nervous. You couldn’t help but let out this awkward chuckle in disbelief that you were actually going to be closing with him tonight.

“Oh, hi! You’re working with me today?” You tried not to sound too excited. At least those around you at work already knew you seemed to be a little ray of sunshine anyway so it wasn’t really unusual for you to seem overly friendly when greeting him - at least you hoped not. 

Jotaro nodded at your question. He never really seemed to smile much, and part of you hoped you’d be able to make him smile one day. In your daydreams you had already imagined that his smile must be so dreamy. Even if he seemed to keep to himself, you would like to think that there’s a secret side to himself that he’d only let someone special see. 

“Oh okay good. For a moment I was kind of worried I might be closing by myself tonight…” there was that awkward chuckle again. You felt nervous all of a sudden and your throat felt so dry. You weren’t used to having to keep a conversation with him this long. The interactions between you two were usually quick greetings when you passed each other between shift changes, but now was your chance to actually get to know him better!

As for Jotaro, he actually volunteered to take this closing shift. When he found out your usual closing partner wouldn’t be able to make it in he checked the schedule to see who had been working first and when he saw your name he figured he didn’t mind taking the shift. This gesture had earned him a smirk from your coworker, but Jotaro had been good at hiding his outward expressions. He wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction of seeing him smile.

“Don’t worry, I’m here to help you out.” Jotaro said with a nod. 

“I appreciate it.” You beamed, “Let’s do this.”

The shift went by rather smoothly - there had been rushes of customers coming in, but there was also some down time too. At first during the downtime the two of you kept to yourselves not daring to pry into each other's personal lives just yet. Slowly but surely each of you started to make small talk. 

“Hey, Jotaro?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you have a favorite drink here?”

“Never thought about it.” 

“Never? For me I have a few favorites. It's kinda hard to choose… I guess it depends on my mood.”

“Do you consider yourself more of a dog or cat person?”

“What?”

“Do you like dogs or cats more?”

“Both are OK.”

“Just ok?” you chuckle, but it doesn’t feel awkward anymore. 

“Yeah. I like sea creatures more.”

“Oh! Like which ones? I think jellyfish are neat!”

It’s finally closing time, and it feels a bit bittersweet. You’re unsure when you and Jotaro will work the same shift together again, but you’re thankful for the chance to actually talk to him and get to know him better this time. You won’t admit it, but you’re definitely taking your time counting the registers. Jotaro won’t admit it either, but he’s also taking his time making sure to sweep the floor and put the chairs and tables away. 

When it’s time to lock up, you expect Jotaro might head out already when he’s done but he made sure to wait for you so you two can walk out together after locking up the store.

“Thank you for working with me today. It was really nice.” you beam in his direction, you still can’t believe you got so lucky to spend time with him like this!

“Yeah, I liked working with you.” Jotaro said, there was a small smile on his face.

Did he smile because of you? Really? You tried not to read into it so much, but you had been waiting for a while to see him smile that it caught you off guard. 

Jotaro must have noticed, because he turned to look in your direction.

“What?”

“Oh. I’ve just never seen you smile before.” you said, now smiling back at him.

Jotaro chuckled a bit, “I don’t usually have a reason to smile.” 

That definitely caught you off guard - no no, don’t read into it too much.

“I see. Well! I’m glad you have a reason to smile tonight.” your smile widened; it felt like your body was heating up!

“Yeah, thank you. I hope we can work together again soon.” He nodded in your direction. 

You’d have to thank your coworker later for not coming in to work today.
