Tree-Born Beings in JTTW?

Upon meeting the Monkey King, the Patriarch Subodhi asks him a number of questions, including his surname (xing, 姓). Monkey confuses this for an inquiry into his temperament or nature (xing, 性):

"I'm not speaking of your temperament," the Patriarch said. "I'm asking after the name of your parents." "I have no parents either," said the Monkey King. The Patriarch said, "If you have no parents, you must have been born from a tree" (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, pp. 114-115). 祖師道：「不是這個性。你父母原來姓甚麼？」 猴王道：「我也無父母。」 祖師道：「既無父母，想是樹上生的？」

The part in bold really interests me.

The possibility of something being born from a tree is the first thing that comes to Subodhi's mind. Remember that the Patriarch is an enlightened master with knowledge of a great many things. Therefore, within the novel's universe, this might point to a category of spirits born from the flowers and/or fruits of trees. Just imagine the possibilities for fanfiction!

This reminds me of Momotarō (桃太郎, "Peach Boy") from Japanese mythology. Like Monkey, he experiences a supernatural birth from a spherical object and later becomes a great hero who battles demons with the help of animal friends.

I had massive brain rot over the Pokémon SV DLC part 2 so anyway now I’m inflicting it on all of you too✌️👋👋

My thinking is that ‘dokutaro’ is just a little ghost inside the pink shell, like a peach pit. If it does turn out to be this way the ghost part will probably have some shadowy limbs of some kind (I’m imagining mimikyu/cofagregius). This is speculation based on the leaks by the Riddler Khu on twitter by the way!

Awww! Venus has such a cutie pie for a brother! What’s their relationship like?

Momotaro is a cautious and anxious raccoon kid, Leo and Usagi found him mutated by Kraang mutagen in New York alone. So he’s a bit afraid of everything, especially weapons and blades since Kraang soldiers are made of metal and blades. Which is a bit of a problem in a house with a ronin and a ninja. Momotaro and Venus get along really well, Venus is kinda of a bossy older sister but it’s only out of protectiveness for Momotaro.

While Leo was really excited to train him as a ninja “He was born with a ninja mask!” But for now Momotaro is content to be like his grandpa and be more of an artist.

Eventually Momotaro will come around to being trained in martial arts and weaponry. He will be more like a samurai or ronin like Usagi and together they’ll be a good team that will argue about what constitutes as “honorable battle tactics”. Thank you for finding my design cute!

 Kirby: Moretsu Pupupu Hour - Volume 7, Chapter 5 English Translation

Here’s a chapter that was requested a while ago, featuring a strange competition between Kirby, Meta Knight, and Marx! Before I link it, though, I should note that this chapter heavily references the story of Momotaro, a Japanese folk hero. Ordinarily, I might try to replace these references with something else that non-Japanese people will understand better, but that’s not really an option here. To very briefly sum it up, an old couple finds Momotaro in a giant peach and raises him as their son, then Momotaro befriends some wild animals and fights a local band of demons alongside them. I did alter the story from its traditional version a bit in the chapter for the sake of a couple of the jokes, but I don’t think a super in-depth knowledge of the story is necessary to understand the chapter.

I immediately got the reference. It's both yokai folklore (look up dog, pheasant and monkey yokai and you'll find ones that fit the bill) and as well as the story of Momotaro with the new legendaries.
