Another couple of drawings for homework.  These drawings are for a lab I have overdue.   Took all day to draw, maybe I shouldn’t put so much detail into each because I still have a lot to do.

Taken the same day as the previous post, this was a northern wood-oat (Chasmanthium latifolium) patch. I know they're also called inland sea oats, but they're not true sea oats. They are native to central and eastern North America within wooded areas and riparian zones. Their seed heads emerge in spring colored green, they turn tan in summer, then turn purple in fall while in same season, the blades turn yellow-gold if given enough sun. When exposed to frost, the blades turn copper. #plant #plants #grass #grasses #texasplants #texasplant #texasgrass #texasgrasses #woodoat #woodoats #wildoat #texasnativeplants #texasnature #nature #flora #plantae #angiosperms #vascularplant #commelinids #monocot #poales #poaceae #chasmanthium #chasmanthiumlatifolium #inlandseaoats #northernwoodoats #northernseaoats #riveroats #indianwoodoats #wildoats (at Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cki8PQEqbxS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

thinking about @plant-taxonomy-showdown's angiosperm cake poll and im contemplating how possible it is to bake a cake using ~~only~~ ingredients obtained from monocots (OR eudicots, but i've got that one figured out i think). i'm currently stumped by how you get air into that sucker without chemical leavening agents (aquafaba comes from eudicots so that's out).
so the solution would be like
bake something that's supposed to be dense, like ginger cake or banana bread. but the thought of making any of these without cinnamon is making me sad
stretch the definition of cake. maybe a pie is possible…?
reaaaaaaaaaaally stretch the definition of monocot-derived ingredient. like. what if i make ginger beer and use its CO2. that definitely can work (i've used cola as a leavening agent before). but then i'm relying on epidermally associated yeasts to make me the CO2, that feels like cheating.
but in theory, someone could run into a maize field at dusk, tie plastic bags around some (thousands) of plants, harvest the air before dawn, extract the CO2, pressurize it enough to blast it into water and then give me that carbonated water to use. does that count. plants make CO2 in the Kreb’s cycle so does it matter that the ginger beer's CO2 comes from a yeast digesting the ginger's glucose and not from the ginger burning its glucose how do you (imaginary arbiter of monocot cake law) know a yeast did it and not me breaking into a field at night with 10000 plastic bags i'm getting off track now.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 7 September 2023
The New Zealand Cordyline australis (cabbage palm, Torbay palm) is capable of growing in coastal sites with strong, salty winds. This plant is capable of reaching over 5 metres high, forming a stout trunk with multiple branches holding 1m long, narrow deep green leaves. In summer there can be large sprays of tiny, fragrant white flowers.

Pokemom Families: Monocot
Tumblr media
(Art by Jira (ziraiya 26)
Monocot is group name for plant like pokemon. This doesn't include all grass types, as some pokemon are grass types for their plant-like abilities. The monocot family only includes Pokemon, which are plants, or most of their bodies have extremely similar qualities of plants. So pokemon like Bulbasaur aren't in this family because the seed is planted on them by their mothers right after they're hatched and doesn't come naturally.
Appletun (just Appletun, not Applin or Flapple) were thought to be Monocots for a while. But they don't fuse with the apple that protected them when they evolve as a lot of people thought. The lower part of the apple is digested into their body through evolution, while the upper part is still used as protection for their soft head. Their body just resemble and apple enough, but not enough to be classified as a Monocot.
An important fact to know: Mushrooms are in their own family known as Agaricaceae, and are more related to mammals than they are plants! Because of this, Pokemon like Shiiinotic and Foongus have confused researchers for a long time. They are obviously grass types, and have similarities to plants, but have more similarities to mushrooms. It could've been that these pokemon evolved from ancient plants similar to mushrooms, but that's just a theory as of now. Because of this, they aren't on the list of Monocot Pokemon
Members of the Monocot family are:
Oddish/Gloom/Vileplume/Bellosom
Sunkern/Sunflora
Cacnea/Cacturne
Cherubi/Cherrim
Petelil/Liligant
Fomantis/Lurantis
Bounsweet/Steenee/Tsareena
Smoliv/Dolliv/Arbolvia
Carnivine
Gossifluer/Eldegoss
Bellsprout/Weepinbell/Victreebell
Hoppip/Skiploom/Jumpluff
Exeggcute/Exegutor
Budew/Roselia/Roserade
Maractus
Phantump/Trevenant
Capsakid/Scovillain
Pumpkaboo/Gorgeist
Bramblin/Brambleghast
I'll put the fact posts on Monocot pokemon as I make them, but I'm also going to put Appletun here, because I've talked about it a lot.
