Weird

-I feel like at face value shipping is just weird (that doesn't mean anyone including myself can't get pulled into it)

-Why are people so invested in believing that people that work together are secretly in love with each other?

-I think a lot of people have to take a step back and wonder why they are so invested in the private lives of people they admire but don't really know?

Funny (Innocent Fun)

-It can be a somewhat funny thing to ship. It can feel like talking about how your two friends have a crush on each other.

-However, many idols have vocalized their dislike for shipping. If you are a fan, why would want to have fun at the expense of someone you supposedly admire.

Homophobic

-When people ship, there is all this talk about idols "acting gay." Isn't this just stereotyping?

-When people try to justify or explain why they ship certain idols, they will describe them as being sus, fruity, girly (or manly if they are female idols). If this was a comment coming out the mouth of a kpop hater we would all call them homophobes, but somehow these words are okay coming from us.

Harmful

-We have all seen the death threats made against Jimin by Taekook shippers. Things have obviously gotten too far when people are so emotionally invested in a ship that they would threaten an idol over it.

-I have also seen Jinkook shippers allege that Jin and Jungkook have been in love since they met, which was when Jin was about 18 or 19 and Jungkook 13 or 14. Some of these shippers claimed that Jin groomed Jungkook. This is such a serious accusation. I feel bad that Jin buying Jungkook meals and helping him get over his homesickness has turned into something bad.

Digression #1

I know many idols encourage shipping. However, this usually happens earlier in their careers when they're more influenced by their companies. As they get older most idols don't continue to do it.

Digression #2

I'm not saying idols can't be gay, but expecting idols to be open about their sexuality when they live in a very anti-gay country is very unrealistic.

Digression #3

There is nothing wrong with what I like to call (friend)shipping or celebrating your favorite idols' friendship. I think that is fine, but anytime you combine two idols' names you are assumed to be suggesting they have a romantic relationship.

For those who don't know, I'm also a kpop fanfic writer! A pretty decent one, according to some. You can find me on AO3 as meleemedusa. I've had trouble writing for the last couple of years, though, so I wanted to take requests.

I tried to do so on AO3 (twice), but my requests posts got taken down (twice) and my account got suspended the second time. Not sure why it's a problem when I do it, but I see others with request posts all the time.
